Looks like Grant Hogue retired

Another one of my favorite players in the organization, 2009 35th Round pick Grant Hogue, tweeted out this morning what looks to be his farewell to the organization.

I want to thank the Astros for an unforgettable 5 yrs. Made friendships and memories I will cherish forever. Time to start that job search!

In four seasons (322 games, 1271 plate appearances), Hogue hit .289/.361/.357 and was an 11-time Man of the Match recipient. In 43 games last season (limited due to injury) at Lancaster, he hit .361/.421/.458 with 22K:17BB. Hogue was kind enough back in 2009 to send in a picture with Aaron Bray and B.J. Hyatt with an official Astros County Proof of Citizenship.

Update: It actually looks as though Hogue retired.

Jack Shuck was 2x5 (now hitting .300 at Triple-A), Brian Bogusevic was 2x3 with a double and a walk, and Matt Kata was 2x4. But it was Collin DeLome who hit a grand slam in the 6th for what the Express needed.

Man of the Match: Come on. Collin DeLome.

Corpus

Corpus learned a thing or two from the Astros, after tying Springfield in the 9th at 5-5, and then allowing a run in the top of the 11th for a 6-5 loss. Henry Villar threw 6IP, 8H/4ER, 3K:3BB and allowed 2HR to Peter Kozma. Matt Nevarez and Jose Valdez threw scoreless innings, and Jeilen Peguero allowed 2H/2ER, 5K:3BB, 2WP in 3IP for the loss. J.D. Martinez was 3x5 with an RBI, and Lou Santangelo was 2x3 with a homer, 2RBI, and two walks. Martinez is hitting .433/.493/.617 in August (36x60, 7XBH).

Man of the Match: Lou Santangelo.

Lancaster

Lancaster took an early 1-0 lead, and then didn't get much after that in a 3-1 loss at Stockton. Leandro Cespedes allowed 3H/3R (1ER), 4K:3BB in 5IP. Shane Wolf, Kyle Godfrey, and Mike Modica each threw scoreless innings. Jonathan Villar was 2x4, but also committed the error leading to the difference in the runs column on the scoreboard. Jay Austin, Brandon Barnes, and Jose Altuve got your other hits.

Man of the Match: Leandro Cespedes, I guess.

Lexington

Strange scoring line between Greenville and Lexington, with Lexington getting fewer hits and committing more errors, but scoring more runs than Greenville. Legends win 4-3, with Grant Hogue scoring the winning run in the bottom of the 8th on a throwing error. Juan Minaya allowed 4H/3R (2ER), 1K:2BB in 6IP. Dan Sarisky got the win with 2IP, 1H/0ER, 2K:1BB, and Kirk Clark struck out the side for his 26th save of the season. Jiovanni Mier was 2x4 with his 2nd homer of the season (ouch), yet committed his 32nd error of the year. Jimmy Paredes and Our Boy Aaron Bray got the other two hits. Grant Hogue scored two runs despite not getting a hit (walk and HBP).

Man of the Match: It's going to Hogue.

Tri-City

Fresh off the All-Star Break, Tri-City picked up where they left off with a solid 6-0 win over Connecticut. Bobby Doran allowed 4H/0ER, 6K:1BB in 7IP for his 4th win of the year, while Alex Sogard and Mike Ness threw perfect innings themselves. Enrique Hernandez was 4x5 with a double, RBI, and two runs scored. Dan Adamson and Tyler Burnett each hit homers, and Mike Kvasnicka - back from his tender forearm issue - was 1x5 with an RBI double.

Man of the Match: Enrique Hernandez (though Doran is equally qualified).

Greeneville

Off. The Gastros now have not played since August 15.

GCL Astros

Despite committing four errors, the GCL Astros beat the GCL Cardinals 5-4. Mark Jones threw 4IP, 5H/4R (3ER), 3K:3BB; Pedro Gomez got the win with 2H/0ER, 4K:0BB in 3IP, and Ebert Rosario collected his first save - ever - with 1H/0ER, 2K:0BB in 2IP. Jordan Scott, Jose Vargas, and Kyle Redinger had two hits each. Jose Fernandez had a bases clearing triple in the 6th.

Man of the Match: Ebert Rosario!

Eddie's Farm: August 16

Round Rock

Oof. Tacoma scores four in the 1st off Jordan Lyles (much to Deputy Street's chagrin, who drove approximately six hours total to see it), but Round Rock storms back, only to lose in 10 innings, 7-6. Lyles allowed 11H/5ER, 3K:5BB in 4.2IP. Jonah Bayliss allowed 2H/1ER, 4K:1BB in 3.1IP; and Chris Sampson took the loss, giving up a Dustin Ackley walk-off in the bottom of the 10th. Tommy Manzella was 3x4 with a double, homer, and 2RBI and Drew Locke was 3x5 with two doubles, 2RBI.

Man of the Match: Tommy Manzella

Corpus

Corpus gave up a run in the first to Arkansas, but got six runs in innings 4-6 for a 6-1 win, despite getting out-hit 10-9. Erick Abreu was sharp, allowing 7H/1ER, 5K:1BB in 6IP. Bubbie Buzachero walked two and gave up three hits in 2.1IP, but nobody scored, and his ERA is 0.79. Jared Wells recorded his second save of the season, inheriting a bases loaded jam, and getting out of it with no damage. J.D. Martinez was 2x5 with 2RBI; David Cook was 2x3 with a walk, Michael Affronti was 2x4 with a triple and an RBI, and Lou Santangelo hit a two-run homer and added a walk.

Man of the Match: Going with Erick Abreu.

Lancaster

Tranzactionz

A couple of notes for you from yesterday:

Lexington placed Tanner Bushue on the Temporarily Inactive list
Lexington activated Grant Hogue from the Bereavement Leave list.

Monday, July 12, 2010

Tranzactionz!

A couple of more transactions for you.

As Farmstros noted, Renzo Tello was called up to Lexington from Tri-City in place of Grant Hogue, who was placed on the bereavement list. Best wishes to Hogue and his family.

We also see a few shuffles from Corpus:

Jordan Lyles placed on the temporarily inactive list (Futures Game), Erik Stiller activated from the temporarily inactive list, and Jared Wells reinstated from the 7-Day DL.

To clear room, the Hooks released LHP Nelson Payano. Payano was signed back in April and posted a 1-1 record in 26 games (29.1IP), with a 5.83 ERA/1.84 WHIP, and 36K:23BB.

Eddie's Farm: July 6

Round Rock

The Express scored the last three runs of the game, but it just wasn't enough in a 5-4 loss to Memphis. Shane Loux threw 6.1IP, 10H/5ER, 4K:1BB to drop to 2-6 on the year. Roy Corcoran allowed a hit in 1.2IP, and Gary Majewski threw a scoreless inning. Collin DeLome and German Duran had two hits each (with DeLome also getting an RBI and stolen base. And was also caught stealing.) Freshly-activated Edwin Maysonet and Brian Bogusevic provided your only two extra-base hits.

Man of the Match: Collin DeLome.

Corpus

Let's get some Big Picture here. The last time the Hooks won was June 21. That's a 12-game losing streak, after Jordan Lyles got rocked in a 7-1 loss to NW Arkansas. Lyles lasted 3.1IP, 8H/6ER, 1K:6BB, throwing 43 of his 82 pitches for strikes. Fernando Abad allowed 5H/1ER, 2K:0BB, and Danny Meszaros struck out four of the six batters he faced in two perfect IPs. Jack Shuck and Jhon Florentino both had two hits, Koby Clemens was 1x2 with a double and two walks, and Marcos Cabral provided the only RBI. Jimmy Van Ostrand and David Cook provided outfield assists.

Man of the Match: Koby Clemens

Lancaster

Despite a 5-4 lead going into the 8th, the JetHawks couldn't close, and ended up 8-6 to Inland Empire. (Note: You can read Zach Levine's notes on Lancaster here). Ross Seaton threw 5.1IP, 7H/4R (3ER), 8K:1BB. Mike Modica and Kyle Godfrey each allowed an earned run, and Brian Wabick gave up two runs for the loss. Lee Cruz was 3x4 with 2HR and 5RBI, while Freddy Parejo was 2x4. Andy Simunic drew three walks.

Man of the Match: Lee Cruz

Lexington

The Legends got four runs in the 7th, but being down 7-1 at that point isn't very helpful, and the Legends lose 9-5 to Augusta. Tanner Bushue allowed 5H/6ER, 3K:3BB in 4.1IP. Wander Alvino, Colton Pitkin, and Kirk Clark allowed 9H/3R (2ER), 4K:2BB in 4.2IP. Bushue and Alvino also threw wild pitches. Grant Hogue was 3x4 with a walk, Jose Altuve, Jonathan Meyer, and Brian Kemp each got two hits, Jordan Comadena hit a solo homer, and Jake Goebbert was 1x4 with a sac fly and 4RBI.

Man of the Match: Grant Hogue

Tri-City

Leadoff walks will kill you. Two consecutive walks to start the 11th inning will end the game, and the ValleyCats lose 5-4 to Batavia. Joan Belliard walked those batters, and Jorge De Leon gave up the hit leading to the game-winning run. Tom Shirley threw 4IP, 2H/1R (0ER), 6K:1BB - and has yet to allow an earned run. Adam Champion allowed 2ER in 1.1IP, Mike Ness allowed an unearned run, Brandt Walker walked two of the four batters he faced, and then Belliard and De Leon came in to "close it out." Tri-City also committed four errors: two from Oscar Figueroa, one each from Buck Afenir and Jorge De Leon. Ben Orloff, Enrique Hernandez, and Daniel Adamson had two hits each in the top three spots in the lineup, with Hernandez, Adamson, Tyler Burnett, and Figueroa providing RBIs.

Man of the Match: Daniel Adamson - 2x5, RBI, SB

Greeneville

And Greeneville has their own six-game losing streak going, after a 6-2 loss to Kingsport. Ricardo Batista allowed 5H/2R (1ER), 3K:0BB in 5IP. Brian Streilein had a rough 6th inning, allowing four hits and a walk for four earned runs. Travis Smink threw two scoreless innings, while Jamaine Cotton threw a perfect 9th. Chris Wallace was 2x4 with a double and an RBI, with Jonathan Merritt, Ricardo Garcia, and Jhonny Medrano providing the other three hits. 6-9 in the lineup (Nash, Nidiffer, Williams, and Lane) were a combined 0x14, 5K:1BB.

Man of the Match: Ricardo Batista.

Eddie's Farm: April 13

Round Rock

The Express were shutout for the second time this season last night, losing 6-0 to Oklahoma City, who scored all their runs in the 7th/8th innings. Josh Banks pitched a gem, throwing 6.2IP, 5H/2ER, 2K:2BBB, and Evan Englebrook gave up 1.1IP, 3H/4R (1ER), 2K:1BB. Kevin Cash was charged with an error - his second catcher interference of the year, leading to three unearned runs for Englebrook. The Express only got four hits: two by Bourgeois, one each by Maysonet and Shelton as Rangers' prospect Derek Holland dominated.

Man of the Match: Josh Banks

Corpus Christi

Koby Clemens is fast putting aside doubts about not being able to hit outside of Zero-Gravity Park. With two homers, including the game-winner in the top of the 13th, the Hooks defeated NW Arkansas 4-3 last night. Sergio Perez threw 5.1IP, 8H/3ER, 2K:1BB, and a bullpen of Villar, Meszaros, Burton, and Nevarez pieced together 7.2IP of 2H/0ER, 7K:3BB relief. The Hooks went into the top of the 9th down 3-2, when David Cook tied it up with a two-out solo homer. Clemens' 13th-inning homer - his second of the game (first one in the fourth a two-run shot off Royals' top prospect Aaron Crow). T.J. Steele, German Duran, and Marcos Cabral were all 2x5.

Man of the Match: Koby Clemens

Lancaster

The JetHawks were in line to get their first win of the season, leading 5-4 going into the 9th inning, and then Pat Urckfitz gave up two, and the JetHawks left the tying run on 2nd to end the game with a 6-5 loss. Kyle Greenwalt threw 5IP, 7H/3ER, 5K:0BB. Leandro Cespedes, pitching in relief, gave up 2H/1ER in 1.1 (3K:1BB), and Urckfitz gave up 3H/2ER, 0K:1BB and an HR in 1IP. Brandon Wikoff, Mark Ori, and Albert Cartwright had two hits each, with Wikoff getting 2RBI.

Man of the Match: Brandon Wikoff

Lexington

Lexington only scored in one inning. But it was all they needed for an 8-5 win over Kannapolis. Tanner Bushue had a rougher second start of the season, throwing 4.1IP, 6H/5R (4ER), 5K:4BB, 1WP - that's ten baserunners in 4.1IP. Kirk Clark got the win as he and Arcenio Leon combined for 4.2IP, 1H/0ER, 5K:0BB. Everyone got a hit for the Legends' offense: Rene Garcia led with a 3x4, 1 RBI day, and Kody Hinze had a two-run single. Grant Hogue was 2x5 with a double, his third stolen base of the season, and an outfield assist, and Jonathan Meyer's defensive struggles continued as a throwing error marked his fifth error of the season. Our boy Aaron Bray was 1x5, with 2Ks.

Man of the Match: Grant Hogue

Mayo, on the Astros' 2009 draft class

Jonathan Mayo has a look at the Astros' 2009 draft class:

Houston went the high-school route with their first four picks, clearly going with who they thought was the best available player in each spot instead of perhaps going with "safer" college players who could conceivably get to the big leagues faster. They did make up for that later on with a slew of college and junior-college picks. The final tally showed 27 of the 36 players signed did come from those ranks...

...And perhaps most important, the Astros didn't waste any time getting this talent going in the system. With just one exception, every pick who signed did so before June was over. If nothing beats experience, then the Astros are way ahead of the game with this Draft class.

On Jiovanni Mier:
The top high-school shortstop in the Draft class, Mier should actually be able to stay at short thanks to a great arm, smooth actions and good range. He impressed those who saw him in the Appalachian League during his debut on both sides of the ball. He hit .276/.380/.484 over 192 at-bats and looks like the Astros hitting prospect with the highest upside throughout the system.

On Tanner Bushue:
Bushue didn't get to pitch a ton even though he signed quickly because of a back injury. He did get in 22 1/3 Gulf Coast League innings, posting a 2.42 ERA and .220 batting average against, striking out 19 and walking just five. He's expected to be fine for Spring Training and it should be interesting to see how this projectable right-hander progresses when healthy.

On Telvin Nash:
Coming from the same high school as 2008 No. 1 overall pick Tim Beckham, Nash has some serious raw power. He didn't show much of it during his debut in the GCL, where he hit .218/.280/.324 with 45 strikouts in 40 games. He did show some improvement with a .259/.317/.379 August, but he'll have to tighten up his swing some so he can tap into that power potential.

On Jonathan Meyer:
Taken in the compensation round following the third, thanks to not signing 2008 third-rounder Chase Davidson, Meyer was a versatile high schooler who played the infield, caught and pitched. The Astros are developing him as a third baseman and he has the chance to be a good one. He started switch-hitting not long ago and while he's behind from the left side, it looks like it might work. He played 62 games for Rookie League Greeneville alongside Mier and hit .190/.301/.299 with 69 strikeouts in 221 at-bats.

On B.J. Hyatt:
The Astros love the pre-Draft workout and Hyatt is one who likely got taken and signed because of how he looked in his workout with the team. He's strong-armed and projectable and his stats with Greeneville as a junior-college product might point to his future role: 1.64 ERA, 11 strikeouts in 11 innings as a reliever; 8.36 ERA in 8 1/3 innings, 18 hits allowed, nine walks and four strikeouts in three starts.

Sleeper Picks:
Dallas Keuchel, J.D. Martinez, Grant Hogue, and Mike Schurz

Projected Fast-Riser:
The Astros used Boston College senior sign James Macdonald (18th round) as a reliever with Tri-City and he pitched well in that role. Should he stay there, he could get there sooner than most.

Hogue played all 53 of his games in center field, making four errors in 102 chances for a .961 Fld%, and also had two outfield assists. Hogue clearly has some wheels (he stole 54 bases in two seasons at Mississippi State), so getting the read on those balls should come along as he progresses.

Looking at his splits, Hogue did well against RHPs and obviously struggled against LHPs. July was his best month, posting a .777 OPS, and then dropping off in August - likely due to a long season at Mississippi State and then his first professional season.

Citizen Steve, what say you on Grant Hogue?
My favorite player on the team this year. Old for the league, he should have been in the leadoff position more. Very, very fast player. He injured his shoulder in college and slid in draft as a result - should have been drafted higher. How highly do the Astros think of him? How often do 35th Round college seniors get invited to the Instructional League? Scrappy player, with good baseball smarts (he once took second on a bloop hit when he saw the outfielder was going to throw to the cutoff man, instead of to second). It will be interesting to see him in Lexington next year.

Gastros hand out their season awards

The Greeneville Astros hand out two awards prior to the last game of the season each year - team MVP, and the Oscar Padron Award (named for former Gastros pitching coach killed in a car accident in Venezuela in 2005). The Padron Award, is given to the Astros player each year that not only excelled on the field, but more importantly, is considered to be a leader in the clubhouse and an outstanding all-around person with great character off the field.

This year, that honor went to Grant Hogue.

And your 2009 Greeneville Astros MVP award went to Jose Altuve who, despite getting called up to Tri-City on August 11, still managed to lead the team in hits, doubles, runs scored, and stolen bases. This is the second Appalachian League award for the non-Appalachian League player this season.

Eddie's Farm: July 19

Round Rock
Big day for a lot of Express players as Round Rock defeats Oklahoma City 7-4. 15 hits on the day, including 4x5 days from Manzella and Gall, and 3x4 from Yordany. Manzella hit his 21st double and 5th homer of the year. Bud Norris got his 4th win of the year, going 8IP, 10H/4ER, 1K:1BB, and raising his ERA to 2.61. Daigle got his 2nd save.

Corpus
Frisco got out to a 6-2 lead after two innings and rode it out to defeat Corpus 9-6. The Hooks enjoyed just five hits, three of them extra-base hits, and one of those Drew Locke's 13th homer of the season. Sergio Perez didn't make it out of the 2nd, going 1IP, 4H/4ER (6 total), 1K:4BB. Lumsden pitched in with 2IP, 2H/3ER, 1K:2BB. Erick Abreu threw 5IP in relief of 1H/0ER, 2K:1BB.

Lancaster
A 4-run 7th was what it took to provide the difference in Lancaster's 11-8 loss to Stockton. There were multi-hit games from Clemens (3x5), Shuck (2x5), Gaston (2x5), and Weston (2x5). Gaston hit his 23rd homer of the season, and Weston and Clemens - who also had three RBI - had doubles. Shane Wolf had a rough time, going 5.2IP, 10H/6ER (7 total), 2K:1BB. Chris Salamida gave up 2ER in 0.2IP, and Jack Tilghman gave up 2ER without recording an out.

Lexington
After giving up four runs in the bottom of the 5th, Lexington stormed back to get four of their own in the top of the 6th, but it just wasn't enough as Lakewood defeated Lexington 6-5. Two hits each from Eric Suttle and Steve Brown paced the offense, but it was Brown's 2 RBI (and Jorge De Leon's RBI) that provided the run scoring. Jordan Lyles threw 4IP, 6H/5ER, 3K:6BB, and Brian Wabick got in 3IP, 3H/1ER, 1K:2BB.

Tri-City
Batavia got a run in the bottom of the 9th, and that's all they needed as Tri-City lost 1-0. The ValleyCats only got four hits (Kemp, Wikoff, Goebbert, Gonzalez), and Goebbert's double was the only one for extras. Dallas Keuchel extended his scoreless streak with 5IP, 2H/0ER, and again didn't walk a batter, but striking out four. Mike Modica had the hard-luck loss with 3IP, 3H/1R (0ER), 3K.

Greeneville
Kingsport whooped up on Greenevillle in a 13-4 win. Jose Altuve was 2x5 with 2 doubles, and Grant Hogue was 2x3 with 2RBI. Luis Cruz gave up 8ER in 5.2IP, Jeiler Castillo gave up 3ER in 0.2IP, and David Martinez gave up 0ER in 2.2IP (but 2R total).

Eddie's Farm: July 7

Eddie's Farm went 4-2 last night.

Round Rock
Round Rock's offense struggled against a rehabbing Kyle Lohse last night in a 3-1 loss to Memphis. Yordany got two of the Express' five hits - and no regular starter is currently hitting above .275. Yorman Bazardo took the loss, giving up 2ER in 8IP with 6K:1BB.

Corpus Christi
Northwest Arkansas jumped out to a 6-0 lead by the fourth inning, and managed to finish it off with a 9-2 win over Corpus. Sutil and Florentino got the only two hits for the Hooks last night. Sergio Perez went 4IP, 7H/5ER, 1K:3BB for the loss. New Hook Charlie Weatherby III gave up 3H/2ER in 2IP, Ryan McKeller went 2IP, 4H/1ER, and T.J. Burton threw the only scoreless inning for the Hooks.

Lancaster
The JetHawks blew up for four runs in the final three innings to defeat Rancho Cucamonga 7-3. Only David Flores didn't get a hit last night, as T.J. Steele was 3x5 (now hitting .359), while Gabe Suarez, Jon Gaston, Matt Weston, and Koby Clemens each had two hits. Jack Shuck hit his first homer of the season and stole his 17th base of the season in 23 attempts, and the JetHawks had three two-out runs on the night. Chris Hicks bumped his record to 8-5 with 6IP, 5H/1ER, 2K:2BB and Chris Salamida closed it out with 3IP, 2H/1ER, 2K:0BB.

Lexington
Ebert Rosario scored Eric Suttle with two outs in the bottom of the 9th to defeat Rome 1-0 last night. The Legends had five hits - three doubles, two of them Rosario's - in the pitcher's duel that saw Jordan Lyles drop the hammer on Rome with 7IP, 7H/0ER, 10K:1BB and Brian Wabick throw two hitless innings for the win. Lyles' ERA is now 2.92.

Tri-City
The ValleyCats got two runs in the 2nd, and then held on for a 2-1 win over Lowell. Russell Dixon got his 4th RBI of the season and Colton Pitkin moved his record to 2-2 with a 5.1IP, 5H/0ER, 6K:4BB performance. Antonio Noguera threw 2IP, 3H/1ER and J.B. MacDonald got his first save of the season with 1.2IP, 2H/0ER, 3K:0BB.

Greeneville
The Greeneville Astros got out to an 8-2 lead after two innings, and then had to hold on for a 13-10 win over Kingsport. Jonathan Meyer was 3x5, Grant Hogue 3x4, and Jose Altuve, Miguel Arrendell, J.D. Martinez, and Aaron Bray had two hits each. The 4-5-6 of Martinez, Meyer, and Bray went 7x15 with 3 doubles and 6RBI. The pitching wasn't much to shout about: B.J. Hyatt went 2IP, 7H/6ER, while Angel Gonzalez got the win despite throwing 1.2IP, 3H/4ER, 2K:2BB. Juri Perez and David Martinez closed out the game with 5.1IP, 2H/0ER, 6K:1BB.

With the 1061st pick...

The Astros select 6'0" 190lb CF Grant Hogue, senior from Missisippi State.

Hogue was a 46th round selection by the Reds in 2008. The MSU media guide says: Fleet-footed switch-hitter who posted the team’s third-high batting average (.321) and the most stolen bases by a Bulldog (25) since 1985.

In 2009 Hogue was 57x181 (.315/.419/.398), with 10XBH-22RBI, 26K:16BB.
