In the first of a crucial five-game series at Round Rock, OKC took a 3-0 lead in the second inning, and didn't give it up, winning 4-2. Ross Seaton threw a strong 5.2IP, 7H/2ER, 4K:0BB. Eric Berger (1.2IP, 3K), Jose Cisnero (0.2IP, 2K:1BB), and Jorge De Leon (1IP) held the Express scoreless over the final 3.1IP.
Rene Garcia was 3x4 with an RBI; Jimmy Paredes hit a solo homer and drew a walk; Jon Singleton was 1x4 with a double, and Che-Hsuan Lin was 1x4 with 2RBI. George Springer was 0x2 with two walks.

Aaron West gave up 8H/3ER, 5K:0BB in 5IP; Kenny Long and Gera Sanchez threw 1.2 scoreless innings each, and Blair Walters took the hard-luck loss with 2H/1R (0ER) in 0IP.

OKC brought a 3-0 deficit back to 3-3, but ultimately gave up the go-ahead run in the top of the 6th to lose 6-4 at home to Albuquerque. Three errors suck, especially when they lead to three unearned runs. Jarred Cosart allowed 6H/3R (1ER), 7K:3BB in 5IP; Kevin Chapman gave up two runs (one earned) in 1IP; Jason Stoffel allowed 2H/1ER, 1K:1BB in 2IP and Josh Zeid struck out two in a clean 9th inning.
Brandon Laird was 2x4 with a home run and a walk; Jon Singleton (RBI, Error) and Robbie Grossman also had two hits. George Springer hit his 2nd homer at Triple-A, drew two walks, and stole a base.

Ariel Ovando demoted
According to the Appalachian League's transactions page, Ariel Ovando has been demoted.
Ovando, who signed as an international free agent for a then-record bonus of $2.5m, Ovando has struggled in his pro career. Debuting as a 17-year old in Greeneville in 2011, Ovando hit .235/.283/.365 with 51K:12BB in 184 PAs. He enjoyed a nice bounce-back year in 2012, hitting .287/.350/.444 with 21 extra-base hits in 59 games, 67K:22BB but has bottomed-out in 2013. In 49 games for Quad Cities, Ovando hit .172/.250/.219 with 57 strikeouts in 189 PAs. In two games for Greeneville, he's 0x6 with 3K.
Ovando is still young - he has only played in 154 professional games - and is 19 years old. The average hitter in the Midwest League is 21.3 years old, so it's not time to tear clothes or anything like that.

PreStros Morning Report: June 9

Things were going along swimmingly at Omaha, well, for the pitching staff. Down 1-0 heading into the 6th, Omaha busted out for a six-run inning, cruising to a 7-0 win over the RedHawks. Jarred Cosart threw 5IP, 2H/4R (3ER), 5K:4BB (16 walks in his last three starts). Josh Zeid threw 1IP, allowing 3H/3R (0ER), 1K:0BB; Kevin Chapman walked two in 1IP and C.J. Fick walked one. On the day, OKC's pitchers allowed 5H/7R (3ER), 7K:7BB.
Not much offense to speak of - five hits, none for extra-bases. Robbie Grossman, Jonathan Villar, Fernando Martinez, Che-Hsuan Lin and Cody Clark had your hits. Jake Elmore and Marc Krauss (2BB) drew the walks.

Astros County Top 25 Prospects: 20-16
So, the last five spots generated quite a bit of discussion. If you missed it, go check it out first. Otherwise, let's get right down to business.
20. Tyler Heineman
Heineman quickly made his presence known in a big way with Tri-City. As a catcher, he threw out 41% of would be basestealers while putting up a monster OBP, spraying doubles, and showing a strong inability to strikeout. As an 8th round pick out of college, Heineman will likely move through the system quickly if he keeps up this level of production. He should start the year in A ball and could sneak into AA by the end of the season, though I think it's unlikely.
19. Robbie Grossman
Grossman is another high on-base ability prospect added this past season. He's played all three outfield positions relatively solidly and has the ability to steal a few bases as well. Originally a 6th round pick out of Cy-Fair High by the Pirates, Grossman was acquired in the Wandy Rodriguez trade. He spent the season in AA and should start in AAA next year, with an outside shot of seeing time as a late-season call-up.
18. Carlos Perez
Despite spending the season in High A ball, there was some concern Perez was a potential Rule 5 selection this off-season. Thankfully, that didn't happen so the Astros get to keep this strong catching prospect in the system. Perez has gained acclaim for his improved defensive ability while routinely hitting for a good average with a strong on-base percentage as well. Perez was originally signed out of Venezuela by Toronto and came to the Astros in the multi-player deal this past summer. Perez will likely start the year in AA.
17. Ariel Ovando
Ovando took steps towards fulfilling his massive potential as he repeated with Greeneville. Known for his massive power potential, Ovando is still quite raw. However, eyewitness reports indicate that he appeared much more focused this past season, both at the plate and in the field. Ovando was given a $2.6M signing bonus by the Astros when they inked him out of the Dominican Republic. I imagine Ovando will get his first test of full-season ball this year, likely with Quad Cities.
16. Josh Fields
Fields has the ability to put up eye-popping strikeout numbers, but always had control issues to go along with them. However, 2012 may have been the year he figured it out and started realizing the potential that led to him being a 1st round pick by Seattle in 2008. After being traded to Boston in 2011, Fields was selected by Houston in the 2012 Rule 5 draft. Assuming he doesn't implode during Spring Training and get returned to Boston, he'll break camp in 2013 as a member of the 25 man roster.

Oklahoma City (65-60)
Oklahoma City's short-lived win streak (2 games) came to an end with a 5-1 loss to Fresno last night. Rudy Owens took the loss with 5.2IP, 5H/2ER, 2K:2BB to lower his ERA to 5.53, throwing 102 pitches (61 strikes). Brian Sanches got four outs with seemingly no trouble, and Garrett Mock gave up 3H/3ER, 3K:2BB in 2IP.
The RedHawks got five hits, none with runners in scoring position, and only one extra-base hit - a double by Jimmy Paredes.
Man of the Match: Rudy Owens, I guess.
Corpus (69-53)
With a 5-1 win last night at Arkansas, the Hooks improved to 69-53 overall, and 32-20 in the 2nd half, maintaining a 5-game lead over San Antonio. Bobby Doran threw 7IP, allowing just 3H/1ER, 6K:2BB. Jake Buchanan closed it out with the final six outs, allowing a hit and a walk.

Jim Callis on Ariel Ovando
I've seen and answered several questions about Ovando's performance so far this year at Greeneville, but I'm always eager to see what those with much more experience judging prospects have to say about our PreStros. Over at Baseball America, Jim Callis answers one reader's questions about Ovando.
I agree with Callis' view here. While Ovando's batting average may look a bit shinier, his walk and strikeout rates are essentially the same they were last year, and his power numbers haven't increased by any statistically meaningful amount, either. I have heard that his defense looks much better this season, and the numbers prove that out so far. In all, Ovando is still very raw.
While Ovando has made some encouraging progress in 2012, he's still far from a finished product.

Jonathan Mayo's Top 10 Prospects
MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo drops his Top 10 Astros prospect list, and he kind of takes a dump on Keith Law's Top 10 list. Here's the short version:
1. Jordan Lyles - Even if he goes back to Triple-A, he'll be in Houston at some point in 2011.
2. Delino DeShields - He should hit the ground running with Class A Lexington this year.
3. Jonathan Villar - He has a plus arm and range, and can steal bases, but he's still very raw, striking out too much and making mistakes in the field as well.
4. Mike Foltynewicz - All he needs is experience to refine his stuff, and he has the chance to be a frontline starter in the future.
5. Jiovanni Mier - Now with Villar to push him, it will be interesting to see what year No. 2 has to offer.
6. Tanner Bushue - All of his pitches show flashes. Added consistency, and strength, should help him move up the ladder.
7. Ariel Ovando - He's just 17, and Astros fans will likely get to see him at a short-season club this summer.

When the Astros gave Ariel Ovando $2.6m, it was the 2nd-highest bonus given out to an international player, $200K behind the Blue Jays' bonus to Adonys Cardona.

Drayton went to go give the young'uns a little pep talk
In Mark Berman's "Out-on-Loux" recap, we learn that Drayton took a trip to Kissimmee to talk to the Instructional League players.
"It's great to see the kids we are excited about. I wanted to see the 16-year old from the Dominican Republic who we paid $2.6 million."
Perhaps he means Ariel Ovando, the 17-year old.

Wade doesn't hear "impact" thrown around too often
But that word, as well as "upside" is exactly what's being said about new international signee Ariel Ovando:
"I talk to our guys about a lot of players, and I don't hear 'impact' and this type of upside being thrown around very often. It was a case worth making, and Drayton McLane and Tal were very receptive to us pursuing it."
Ovando will report to the new Dominican facility for the rest of the year, and will begin his pro career in 2011.

"It's nothing that I'm overly concerned about. As far as the timing, it couldn't have come at a better time. I'll have four days off and four days after that [for the All-Star break], and if I do start again, it's going to be on the back end of the rotation, so that's another four days."
Everyone's really excited about Ariel Ovando. Right, Wade?
"Four different scouting reports say this kid is a middle-of-the-order power bat with fast hands, a 30-homer, 100-RBI potential kind of guy with good defensive skills and a strong arm. We'll see. A lot can happen."
Brad Mills likes the lefty Castro in the 6-spot, because Johnson is comfortable at #7:
"It seems like Johnson seems to be a little bit more comfortable in the seven spot. I like to have a left-handed hitter hitting in the sixth spot. It's a combination of things, like when Johnson is swinging the bat better and putting him up there at sixth, but I prefer to have a left-handed hitter like Castro hit sixth. If Johnson continues to swing the bat better at the seventh spot and that fits in with him, that's what we'd like to have happen."

International Signing Time!
Baseball America's Ben Badler is reporting that the Astros have signed 16-year old Dominican outfielder Ariel Ovando for reportedly between $2.6 and $2.8 million.
Bobby Heck:
"This is a high-caliber talent who we think has a chance to be an impact bat and would be a definite first-rounder in any draft...We think there's hit skill here more than just raw bat speed and a high ceiling for power, too. We think he has damage to do both as a hitter and with power."

Ovando will begin his career in right field, but the biggest draw for most scouts is his outstanding physical frame at 6-foot-4, 180 pounds, and lefthanded power.

This season, he is expected to first report to the Astros Latin American complex in Boca Chica, DR, in the upcoming days and then is scheduled to participate in the Florida Instructional League in Kissimmee, FL in September.

(Special Assistant to the GM) Felix (Francisco) did a lot of work on this kid and we also were able to have some of our other evaluators scout him over the past several months. Ariel profiles as a middle of the order power hitter with excellent defensive skills. He profiles as a front line major league right fielder and should move quickly through the minor league system."

Darryl Strawberry type body. Large frame. Long arms and legs with a lot of room to fill out. Everyday right fielder with the ability to hit for average and power. Ball carries off bat. Will be an above average right fielder with an average to above-average arm. Smart kid who has a clear goal in life and is dedicated.
