Eddie's Farm: July 25
Round Rock
Iowa put up three separate multi-run innings on their way to a 14-2 win over Round Rock. Thanks to errors by Matt Kata, Tommy Everidge, and Edwin Maysonet, three runs were unearned. Polin Trinidad threw 5IP, 12H/9R (7ER), and Brad Thompson threw the final 4IP, allowing 4IP, 7H/5R (4ER)4ER), 1K:1BB. The Express were 0x7 w/RISP, and they only got seven hits total - four by Drew Locke. Matt Kata was 2x4 with a triple, and Maysonet was 1x3 with a walk and an RBI.

Frisco took it to Corpus for a 4-0 win. Jeremy Johnson threw 7.1IP, 11H/4ER, 2K:2BB, and Evan Englebrook allowed 1H in the final 0.2IP. The Express scored the last three runs of the game, but it just wasn't enough in a 5-4 loss to Memphis. Shane Loux threw 6.1IP, 10H/5ER, 4K:1BB to drop to 2-6 on the year. Roy Corcoran allowed a hit in 1.2IP, and Gary Majewski threw a scoreless inning. Collin DeLome and German Duran had two hits each (with DeLome also getting an RBI and stolen base. And was also caught stealing.) Freshly-activated Edwin Maysonet and Brian Bogusevic provided your only two extra-base hits.

Eddie's Farm Employees of the Month: June
Another month has come and gone for Eddie's Farm. So who are the Employees of the Month?
Round Rock
Position Player: Drew Locke. Locke followed up a strong May with another strong month, earning the honor of the Eddie's Farm Employee of the Month. Locke was 32x101 (.317/.343/.525) with 14 extra-base hits.
Pitcher: His one brutal outing for the Astros notwithstanding, this goes to Josh Banks. He was 3-1 (7-2 since April), allowing 23H/8BB in 30IP for the Express in June, for a 1.50 ERA. Hitters managed a .219 line against him.
Honorable mention: Jonah Bayliss. In eight appearances (11IP) in June, Bayliss allowed 4H/1ER, 14K:0BB.
Corpus
Position Player: Jack Shuck. Hit .347/.426/.376 in 25 games in June with 13K:14BB.
Honorable Mention: German Duran. Hit .342/.398/.425, with 8K:8BB.
Pitcher: Jordan Lyles (though you could insert Doug Arguello in here, too). Allowed 29H/7ER in 30IP, with 33K:9BB, and was rewarded with a 1-2 record.

Position Player: Initially had a hard time giving it to a 27-year old in the California League, but Lee Cruz hit .400/.429/.650 in June, so that took care of that.
Pitcher: Wasn't even close. Dallas Keuchel was 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA in four starts, allowing 25H/6ER in 27.1IP, with 23K:6BB. Looking forward to seeing him in Corpus.

Position Player: Our Boy Aaron Bray followed up an April in which his OPS was .440 with a May in which his OPS was .470. June, however, saw him post a .391/.451/.516 line, for a .966 OPS. J.D. Martinez posted a .994 OPS in June, but since Bray is Our Boy, and hit .391, he's our winner.
Pitcher: Zach Grimmett. In seven appearances (20IP), Grimmett allowed 12 hits and five walks for a 1.80 ERA.
We'll pick up with Tri-City, Greeneville, and the GCL Astros when they've had a chance to play more than 10 games.

Though they didn't lead to any runs, Drew Locke, Sergio Perez, and Ramon Vazquez all made errors, while Brian Esposito allowed a passed ball. Andy Van Hekken threw 6IP, 7H/6ER, 2K:0BB, and a balk. Sergio Perez game up 5H/5ER, 1K:2BB in 2IP. Matt Kata, Ramon Vazquez, and Brian Esposito all had two hits, while David Cook and Esposito drove in the runs.

Payano and Peguero threw 2.2IP combined, allowing 2H (both Peguero's), 2K:2BB. Danny Meszaros gave up the game-winning run in the 11th. Two-hit games came courtesy of Cabral, Van Ostrand (RBI), Florentino, Affronti (more on him in a forthcoming post), and Santangelo (2RBI). Shuck and Clemens struck out four times each. Wabick and Walker got an out each to close it out. Lee Cruz was 4x5 with 3RBI, and Andy Simunic, Brandon Barnes, Freddy Parejo, and David Flores had two hits each.

Lexington cut the lead to one in the 9th, but left the tying run on second base, and the Legends lose 4-3 to Rome. Brad Dydalewicz allowed 7IP, 7H/4ER, 4K:3BB in the loss, and Arcenio Leon and Mike Schurz combined for 3K in the final two innings. The Legends got five hits on the night, including a homer from J.D. Martinez, while Goebbert (1x3, BB, RBI), Meyer, Garcia, and Kemp (RBI) added the other knocks. Jose Altuve flied out to center with Kemp on 2nd to end the game.

No offense for the ValleyCats as they lose the opener of a road trip to Vermont 2-0. Carlos Quevedo threw 6IP, 4H/2ER, 6K:0BB and Joan Belliard allowed one walk in 2IP. The four hits were by Enrique Hernandez, Ben Heath, Adam Bailey, and Oscar Figueroa. Mike Kvasnicka was 0x2 to drop his average to .121, but drew two walks on the night.

Signed free agent 2B Luis Maza and SS Ramon Vazquez.
Luis Maza is a just-turned 30-year old from Venezuela. In 12 minor-league seasons, Maza has hit .282/.345/.411, and had spent 2010 with the Phillies' Triple-A team in Lehigh Valley. After hitting .378 in 2008 for Las Vegas, and .300 for Albuquerque (both Dodgers Triple-A teams), Maza was hitting .222/.290/.263 for Lehigh Valley. He has a career .980 Fld% at 2B.
Matt Kata had the lion's share of games at 2B (73), while Navarro had 44 games.
Big-leaguer SS Ramon Vazquez comes to the Express from the Seattle system, after spending 2009 with the Pirates, where he hit .230/.335/.279 in 101 games. In 35 games with Seattle's Triple-A team in Tacoma, he had hit .216/.279/.320.
I really hope he's not the Oswaldo Navarro Plan C at shortstop.

All-Star Break update: Lancaster JetHawks
So it's All-Star Break time for the California League's Lancaster JetHawks. I think we can speak freely and just go ahead and admit that this has been a pretty horrible season for the JetHawks. They finished the first half of the season 23-47, 23 games behind CAL South 1st Half winner Lake Elsinore. Their OPS is 7th in the 10-team league at .734, and while their .405 SLG is 7th, the .328 OBP is 9th. The main issue - as it traditionally is in Coors Light - is the pitching. The staff's cumulative 5.10 ERA is worst in the League, as is the 1.53 WHIP. They have the fewest strikeouts (456) and have given up the 2nd-highest number of homers (64) and hits (713). Despite this, the JetHawks are averaging 2,313 fans/game, 6th in the California League. And despite this, there have been some bright spots in the offense and pitching staff - with some guys making a real push to be considered for a call-up to Corpus.
Lancaster - hitters
Typically, we wouldn't consider Lee Cruz as having played enough for a listing here, and 51ABs isn't significant enough to get our undergarments all twisted up about. But still, to go from an independent league to a 1.314 OPS (as a 27-year old, I get it) is at least worth recognizing.
Lancaster - pitchers
Keuchel is listed first, because he's the only JetHawk to start more than 10 games and have an ERA under 4.00 (Greenwalt has a 4.71 ERA/1.51 WHIP). David Berner is worth remarking on because of his low ERA/WHIP, but also thanks to his 8.2 K:BB ratio. It's also worth noting that Kyle Godfrey is the only JetHawk pitcher to not allow a homerun this season.

And that's a shutout. Another strong outing by Josh Banks, as he goes 8.1IP, 3H/0ER, 2K:3BB, for a 2-0 win over New Orleans. Roy Corcoran got the final two outs for the save. Bogusevic, Castro, and Locke had two hits each, with RBIs from Maysonet and Castro.

Old fashioned beatdown handed out by the Hooks as they dominate Midland 10-0. Jordan Lyles threw 4IP, 5H/0ER, 2K:1BB. Henry Villar threw 3IP, 2H, 4K and Edwin Walker and Erik Stiller combined for 2IP, 1H/0ER. Jimmy Van Ostrand and Wladimir Sutil had three hits each (two doubles and an RBI from Sutil). Koby Clemens hit a two-run homer and added another RBI. Jack Shuck, David Cook, and Jon Gaston had two hits each. Van Ostrand is hitting .333 (10x30) over his last ten games, and has a five game hitting streak.

Good Lord. Visalia beats the piss out of Lancaster 18-4. Kyle Greenwalt threw 4IP, 10H/9R (3ER) - yeah, the JetHawks committed four errors (three fielding by Cartwright). Mike Schurz got lit up in 2.2IP, allowing 5H/8ER, 2K:3BB, and Ashton Mowdy allowed 1ER in 2.1IP. Raul Contreras had the only multi-hit game, and the top four in the lineup (Austin, Cartwright, Barnes, and Cruz) all went 1x4 with an RBI. Lee Cruz hit his first homer for the JetHawks.

Jose Cisnero threw 5IP, 5H/4R (2ER), 5K:3BB while Wander Alvino, Colton Pitkin, Kirk Clark and Jose Trinidad combined for 7IP, 5H/2R (1ER). Jake Goebbert was 2x6 (two doubles) and 2RBI. Andy Simunic and Grant Hogue had two hits each, while everyone but Jiovanni Mier got a hit.
Man of the Match: Got to give it to Our Boy Aaron Bray, for the come-from-behind walkoff.

Brutal day for the bullpen, as the second DSL Yankees team scored seven runs in the last two innings to erase an 8-3 Astros lead and win 10-8. Edgar Ferreira got the start, throwing 3IP, 5H/2ER (3R), 4K:2BB. Things went swimmingly for Elias De Leon, as he held the Yankees scoreless for 4IP, allowing three hits. Then Jandal Gustave gave up three earned with three walks - no doubt helped by Cristian Hirland, and Francisco Baso gave up three runs - two earned - for the loss. Raymer Lopez and Mario Gonzalez had two hits each while Carlos Alcantara added 2RBI.

Astros purchase contract of Lee Cruz
We interrupt this draft coverage to report the Astros have purchased the contract of the Yuma Scorpions' (indpendent Golden League) Lee Cruz.
Cruz, who leads the Golden Baseball League with an average of .433 was originally drafted by the Chicago White Sox organization and signed with Yuma a month ago. In just 17 games under field manager Darryl Brinkley the right handed hitting Cruz has hit three home runs, three triples and five doubles. He is also second in the GBL in RBI to teammate Timothy Rodriquez with 26.
Cruz will report to Lancaster.
