Bourn: Started running
Hey, so Michael Bourn has started running again, but is not close to baseball activity.
Within McTaggart's notebook, we also read that Castro is going back to Stanford, and Dave Clark is looking forward to managing Licey in the Dominican Winter League, which will feature Josh Banks, Henry Villar, Anderson Hernandez, Alberto Arias, and Sammy Gervacio.

Who's taking Moehler's spot?
With Brian Moehler on the DL and Felipe Paulino needing more time to recover, the Astros have some decisions to make. Who comes up to replace him?
Wesley Wright could be a candidate. He's on the 40-man roster, the Astros seem to want him in the rotation at some point, and in his last three starts, he has thrown 16.1IP, 8H/3ER, 15K:7BB. But his last start came on July 15 at Albuquerque. The Astros also may want to keep him in Round Rock for the year, not wanting to burn an option for a spot start.
Josh Banks may be more likely. He hasn't pitched since the All-Star Game on Wednesday night, and his last start before that was on July 8. He's not on the 40-man roster, but hasn't given up more than three earned runs in a start since May 30. That was a rough start in Arlington, but let's take the competition into consideration.
I say Banks comes up. Agree? Disagree?

Josh Banks feels good about his decision, Hooton breaks him down
Banks' hometown paper, Hometown Glenburnie, has a nice little profile on Josh Banks.
Banks:
"I definitely feel comfortable with my decision to sign with Houston. They have given me the opportunity to go out and start every fifth day, which is all I can ask for. I've found it's a real fair organization. If you perform well and do things right, you will be rewarded."
On that one start in Arlington:
"It's a shame because I got a shot and just didn't have good stuff that day. I've made 18 starts on the season and all but three have been quality. I just wish I'd been able to come through for the Astros when they needed me."
Pitching Coach Burt Hooton:
"Josh has proven that he's a good, solid starter at the Triple-A level, but the real education comes in the big leagues. Josh's best shot is to find a team that will afford him a chance to settle in at the major league level and show his consistency, competitiveness and command. He doesn't have the luxury of making mistakes because he doesn't have the real electric stuff. I've tried to get Josh to cut down on how many different pitches he throws - instead of using six, why not master three. My philosophy is that you pitch with your fastball and occasionally use other stuff to work off it."
Banks:
"I really like this organization and would love to stay here, but that's up to the front office folks."

Eddie's Farm Employees of the Month: June
Another month has come and gone for Eddie's Farm. So who are the Employees of the Month?
Round Rock
Position Player: Drew Locke. Locke followed up a strong May with another strong month, earning the honor of the Eddie's Farm Employee of the Month. Locke was 32x101 (.317/.343/.525) with 14 extra-base hits.
Pitcher: His one brutal outing for the Astros notwithstanding, this goes to Josh Banks. He was 3-1 (7-2 since April), allowing 23H/8BB in 30IP for the Express in June, for a 1.50 ERA. Hitters managed a .219 line against him.
Honorable mention: Jonah Bayliss. In eight appearances (11IP) in June, Bayliss allowed 4H/1ER, 14K:0BB.
Corpus
Position Player: Jack Shuck. Hit .347/.426/.376 in 25 games in June with 13K:14BB.
Honorable Mention: German Duran. Hit .342/.398/.425, with 8K:8BB.
Pitcher: Jordan Lyles (though you could insert Doug Arguello in here, too). Allowed 29H/7ER in 30IP, with 33K:9BB, and was rewarded with a 1-2 record.
Lancaster
Position Player: Initially had a hard time giving it to a 27-year old in the California League, but Lee Cruz hit .400/.429/.650 in June, so that took care of that.
Pitcher: Wasn't even close. Dallas Keuchel was 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA in four starts, allowing 25H/6ER in 27.1IP, with 23K:6BB. Looking forward to seeing him in Corpus.
Lexington
Position Player: Our Boy Aaron Bray followed up an April in which his OPS was .440 with a May in which his OPS was .470. June, however, saw him post a .391/.451/.516 line, for a .966 OPS. J.D. Martinez posted a .994 OPS in June, but since Bray is Our Boy, and hit .391, he's our winner.
Pitcher: Zach Grimmett. In seven appearances (20IP), Grimmett allowed 12 hits and five walks for a 1.80 ERA.
We'll pick up with Tri-City, Greeneville, and the GCL Astros when they've had a chance to play more than 10 games.

Banks DFA'd, Moehler's job safe
Josh Banks was designated for assignment yesterday, to make room for Bud Norris' return tonight against Milwaukee.
This means that Brian Moehler's job is safe, at least until Felipe Paulino returns from the DL.

Paulino to the DL
Yep, Felipe Paulino is headed to the DL with tendinitis in his shoulder. Josh Banks' contract has been purchased from Round Rock, and he has been placed on the 40-man roster, and will start on Saturday at Arlington. No word yet as to who has been optioned off the 40-man roster to make room for him.

Round Rock (29-31)
And that's a shutout. Another strong outing by Josh Banks, as he goes 8.1IP, 3H/0ER, 2K:3BB, for a 2-0 win over New Orleans. Roy Corcoran got the final two outs for the save. Bogusevic, Castro, and Locke had two hits each, with RBIs from Maysonet and Castro.
Man of the Match: Josh Banks
Corpus (30-28)
Old fashioned beatdown handed out by the Hooks as they dominate Midland 10-0. Jordan Lyles threw 4IP, 5H/0ER, 2K:1BB. Henry Villar threw 3IP, 2H, 4K and Edwin Walker and Erik Stiller combined for 2IP, 1H/0ER. Jimmy Van Ostrand and Wladimir Sutil had three hits each (two doubles and an RBI from Sutil). Koby Clemens hit a two-run homer and added another RBI. Jack Shuck, David Cook, and Jon Gaston had two hits each. Van Ostrand is hitting .333 (10x30) over his last ten games, and has a five game hitting streak.
Man of the Match: Wladimir Sutil
Lancaster (18-42)
Good Lord. Visalia beats the piss out of Lancaster 18-4. Kyle Greenwalt threw 4IP, 10H/9R (3ER) - yeah, the JetHawks committed four errors (three fielding by Cartwright). Mike Schurz got lit up in 2.2IP, allowing 5H/8ER, 2K:3BB, and Ashton Mowdy allowed 1ER in 2.1IP. Raul Contreras had the only multi-hit game, and the top four in the lineup (Austin, Cartwright, Barnes, and Cruz) all went 1x4 with an RBI. Lee Cruz hit his first homer for the JetHawks.
Man of the Match: Lee Cruz
Lexington (31-30)
The Legends got two in the bottom of the 12th on Aaron Bray's 2-run walkoff single for a 7-6 win over Delmarva. Jose Cisnero threw 5IP, 5H/4R (2ER), 5K:3BB while Wander Alvino, Colton Pitkin, Kirk Clark and Jose Trinidad combined for 7IP, 5H/2R (1ER). Jake Goebbert was 2x6 (two doubles) and 2RBI. Andy Simunic and Grant Hogue had two hits each, while everyone but Jiovanni Mier got a hit.
Man of the Match: Got to give it to Our Boy Aaron Bray, for the come-from-behind walkoff.
DSL Astros (2-9)
Brutal day for the bullpen, as the second DSL Yankees team scored seven runs in the last two innings to erase an 8-3 Astros lead and win 10-8. Edgar Ferreira got the start, throwing 3IP, 5H/2ER (3R), 4K:2BB. Things went swimmingly for Elias De Leon, as he held the Yankees scoreless for 4IP, allowing three hits. Then Jandal Gustave gave up three earned with three walks - no doubt helped by Cristian Hirland, and Francisco Baso gave up three runs - two earned - for the loss. Raymer Lopez and Mario Gonzalez had two hits each while Carlos Alcantara added 2RBI.

Round Rock
The Express were shutout for the second time this season last night, losing 6-0 to Oklahoma City, who scored all their runs in the 7th/8th innings. Josh Banks pitched a gem, throwing 6.2IP, 5H/2ER, 2K:2BBB, and Evan Englebrook gave up 1.1IP, 3H/4R (1ER), 2K:1BB. Kevin Cash was charged with an error - his second catcher interference of the year, leading to three unearned runs for Englebrook. The Express only got four hits: two by Bourgeois, one each by Maysonet and Shelton as Rangers' prospect Derek Holland dominated.
Man of the Match: Josh Banks
Corpus Christi
Koby Clemens is fast putting aside doubts about not being able to hit outside of Zero-Gravity Park. With two homers, including the game-winner in the top of the 13th, the Hooks defeated NW Arkansas 4-3 last night. Sergio Perez threw 5.1IP, 8H/3ER, 2K:1BB, and a bullpen of Villar, Meszaros, Burton, and Nevarez pieced together 7.2IP of 2H/0ER, 7K:3BB relief. The Hooks went into the top of the 9th down 3-2, when David Cook tied it up with a two-out solo homer. Clemens' 13th-inning homer - his second of the game (first one in the fourth a two-run shot off Royals' top prospect Aaron Crow). T.J. Steele, German Duran, and Marcos Cabral were all 2x5.
Man of the Match: Koby Clemens
Lancaster
The JetHawks were in line to get their first win of the season, leading 5-4 going into the 9th inning, and then Pat Urckfitz gave up two, and the JetHawks left the tying run on 2nd to end the game with a 6-5 loss. Kyle Greenwalt threw 5IP, 7H/3ER, 5K:0BB. Leandro Cespedes, pitching in relief, gave up 2H/1ER in 1.1 (3K:1BB), and Urckfitz gave up 3H/2ER, 0K:1BB and an HR in 1IP. Brandon Wikoff, Mark Ori, and Albert Cartwright had two hits each, with Wikoff getting 2RBI.
Man of the Match: Brandon Wikoff
Lexington
Lexington only scored in one inning. But it was all they needed for an 8-5 win over Kannapolis. Tanner Bushue had a rougher second start of the season, throwing 4.1IP, 6H/5R (4ER), 5K:4BB, 1WP - that's ten baserunners in 4.1IP. Kirk Clark got the win as he and Arcenio Leon combined for 4.2IP, 1H/0ER, 5K:0BB. Everyone got a hit for the Legends' offense: Rene Garcia led with a 3x4, 1 RBI day, and Kody Hinze had a two-run single. Grant Hogue was 2x5 with a double, his third stolen base of the season, and an outfield assist, and Jonathan Meyer's defensive struggles continued as a throwing error marked his fifth error of the season. Our boy Aaron Bray was 1x5, with 2Ks.

Josh Banks is getting ready
The Baltimore Sun has a nice little profile on Astros invitee Josh Banks, whose career can be attributed to a high school coach:
He was good enough to star in Maryland baseball, but McCandless, having higher aspirations for him, brought in a pitching specialist, veteran Anne Arundel coach Clayton Jacobsen, to work with Banks.
In his new charge, Jacobsen saw a thoughtful young man with rare ability but, like most pitchers that age, poor mechanics. He taught Banks a more vertical arm slot and a curveball less reliant on wrist motion.
Like many a prodigy, Banks pleased his tutor but daunted him, too.
"Josh is a great listener," Jacobsen says. "He'd take whatever you taught him and came back the next day, having mastered it. He was an obsessive. I thought, 'I'd better not tell him anything wrong.'"
And Banks learned from a good one: Greg Maddux.
It was Maddux who made the deepest impression. The bespectacled four-time Cy Young Award winner, who was funnier in person than Banks expected, grilled the newcomer on his pitching. He spoke of how strategy on the mound should change as the pitch count changes. He even offered nuggets of advice.
"He said if you throw down and away 95 percent of the time, you'll win 15 games a year," Banks says. "He also said it's a myth that you have to come inside [throw in on a battter to get him away from the plate] to keep hitters honest. I don't know if I can make that work. He sure did. He won 355 games. At the time, I had two."
And he taught himself a hard knuckler:
"It's not like the kind you associate with Tim Wakefield. It's harder, and it drops a couple of feet. I use it when I'm in a jam."

A note on Brett Myers
The question that I think we're all asking with the signing of Brett Myers is, "Just how much will the Astros pay him?"
Myers is coming off a three-year deal with the Phillies (and it was Ed Wade who drafted Myers in the 1st Round of the 1999 draft) worth $25.75 million.
But he was hurt in 09 - with a torn/frayed labrum and a strange eye injury - and pitched in only 18 games, with 10 starts, and missing time from May 27 to September 5. Upon returning from the DL, Myers pitched solely in relief.
Given the injury history, I can't imagine Myers getting more than a 2-year deal, with a lower base salary and heavy on the incentives. But the bigger question is what the Astros' rotation will look like.
Seeing as how the Astros already have Moehler locked up, this probably means Paulino is out of the rotation and back in to the bullpen, and those minor-league deals to which the Astros signed Josh Banks and Gustavo Chacin are exactly that.

Josh Banks signs with Astros
I'd been hearing rumors about this, but didn't have the stones (that's funny, because I'm listening to Sticky Fingers right now. But you're not in the same room as I, so this part is just a waste of your time) to write anything about it.
The Astros have signed Padres pitcher Josh Banks to a minor-league deal with an invitation to Spring Training.
Banks, a RHP who will be 28 in July, was a 2003 2nd-round pick by the Blue Jays, where he spent part of the 2007 season (another Arnsberg arm). He was released in April 2008 and picked up off waivers by the Padres, where he spent parts of two seasons, compiling a 4-7 record with a 5.25 ERA / 1.48 WHIP in 23 games (17 starts).
Banks was 1-5 last season in six starts for the Padres with his one win coming against, of course, the Astros.
In Triple-A Portland last year, Banks was 7-7 with a 3.46 ERA / 1.25 WHIP.
And now we have some reaction. Take it away, Ricky Bennett:
He had pretty good numbers last year in Triple-A Portland and is another quality arm we feel we can add to our depth. He will be in big league camp and will be competing for a spot in the rotation, and we'll try to get him innings out of the bullpen as the long guy. Once we get to camp and he has a couple of innings under his belt, we'll try to stretch him out and see how he fits...
..."We were having conversations with Banks all along knowing in the back of our minds that Sadowski may choose to go to Japan, and that's actually what happened. We knew going into it that it was a possibility. We went ahead and signed him in the event that it worked itself out, but it wasn't a surprise for us."
Ryan Sadowski, as you may recall, was reported to have signed with a team in Korea. Now I guess it's Japan.

Recap for G75 - Astros @ Padres
I knew it. All that talk about "one game under .500," was too good to be true. Or so Chris Sampson thought, in a 4-3 loss last night at PETCO. Three of those Padres runs came in the 7th inning after the Astros had a 3-0 lead after three innings shaved to 3-1 in the 4th.
Hampton had a great outing in his first start since coming off the DL. Let's take a gander:
Hampton: 6IP, 4H/1ER, 6K:1BB, 18 first-pitch strikes (78.3%), 31 non-contact strikes
Sampson: 1IP, 4H/3ER, 1K:0BB, 6 FPS (85.7%), 7 NCS
Arias: 1IP, 1K:1BB, 4 FPS (100%), 5 NCS
So Sampson. What the heck happened? Well, here's what sucks: all three of those 7th inning runs came with two outs. After getting Blanco to K (swinging), and Cabrera to sac bunt, Sampson gave up three straight hits - a double to right, single to right, single to center. 4-3 game. And, for the second time in three days, the Astros lose on a night that the Cubs, Reds, and Cardinals all lost.
Sampson:
"I just didn’t make pitches," he said. "It was my fault. I missed a few spots, made some bad pitches. Hampton pitched his tail off and deserved to win. I just messed it up."
Offensively the Astros did enough to win. Berkman's 3rd inning homer capped a 2x3 night, one batter after Tejada doubled in Bourn. 1-4 in the lineup got six of the Astros seven hits, going 6x15 (.400) with a walk. The Astros did have a chance to do something in the 9th, but two quick groundouts from Pence (now hitting .310 - and has four hits in last 32 ABs) and Kata put the Astros behind, and when Michaels and Pudge walked, Bourn lined out to right to end the game.
Man of the Match: Toss-up between Lance and Hampton. But this one's going to Lance, 2x3 with a walk and a 2-run homer.
Goat of the Game: Is there any doubt? Chris Sampson.

Matchup for G75 - Astros @ Padres
I'll be honest. I don't know what to expect from Mike Hampton, but giving his arm two weeks off to recover from groinstring issues will probably work to his favor.
Our Fair Team is 36-38, and with a win tonight will be - obviously - within one game of .500. That hasn't happened since the Astros were 1-2 on April 8. How do you like that? It's also worth noting that, with last night's win, the Astros are 17-17 on the road. And 19-21 at home.
Mike Hampton
No rundown on Mike Hampton today, as it's just been too long since he pitched.
Josh Banks
Josh Banks will be making his first start of the season tonight against Hampton, having pitched in relief in two games this season so far. Tonight was initially Wade Leblanc's turn in the rotation, but he went out and got himself sent to Triple-A Portland with a 14.54 ERA.
Two appearances:
I imagine we could be seeing what the bullpen has to offer early tonight (i.e, before we all go to bed), as his pitch count hasn't been ramped up to this point. Banks gets some flyballs, but at PETCO, that's okay.
Let's do the splits, even though he's only faced 22 batters:
vs Righties: 6x17, .353/.350/.529, 2K:1BB
vs Lefties: 1x5, .200/.200/.200, 0K:0BB
When swinging at the first pitch (0): n/a
After First-Pitch Strikes (13): .300/.333/.600, 1K:1BB
After First-Pitch Balls (13): .333/.308/.641, 1K:0BB
RISP: 0x7, .000/.000/.000, 1K:0BB
Runners on: 2x16, .125/.125/.125, 2K:0BB
2OwRISP: 0x4, .000/.000/.000, 0K:0BB
Yeah. That wasn't very helpful. Worst. Matchup Post. Ever.
