Honorary Citizen Aaron Bray dominated Astros County last off-season, writing a weekly series of posts for us as he prepared for his first full season in the Astros' organization. While we don't want to put that same pressure on him this off-season, he was kind enough to answer a few questions about 2010.
-
AC: Last time we talked to you, you were gearing up for Spring Training. How was this season - your first full one - different, and how did it meet your expectations going into 2010?
AB: Well, it was totally different compared to my first. 162 games plus spring training is a very long time. I felt like this is the hardest part in your professional career - you don't know what exactly to expect when you go into spring training or when you go into your first full season. It was a great experience and I understand how it all works now. I am already working out, because I know what it takes now physically to get through a long season. I do feel like the hardest thing to make the jump from rookie ball to full season is mentally. That's what I would say was different from my first year in Greeneville: you have to come to work each day with an attitude of wanting to get better and put yesterday behind you. I am already looking forward to going back.
AC: You got off to a slow start in April and May (.440 and .470 OPS, respectively) before absolutely lighting it up in June (.966 OPS) and finishing well down the stretch. What happened after your first 100(-ish) ABs that made everything click in June (.391/.451/.516)?
AB: Last off-season I worked on a few things with my swing. At the time I thought felt better. I found myself, come season time, changing things every day. I did not feel comfortable in the box. It wasn't that the pitching was better, it was more of a mental thing. So I worked on it by myself, and I have to also thank hitting coach Stubby Clapp - he let me venture off and figure it out on my own. He did have input, but told me the only way I would find something that works is on my own. I think he appreciated the fact that I learned on my own. I think that shows a lot of the time and effort I put in to what I am doing.
As for the problem, I felt like I had nothing into my swing. No weight, no power. I was stiff. I watched film on myself and then went on youtube and watched guys like Hamilton and Cano, guys that I can emulate. I adopted a leg kick, that I felt helped me have rhythm and a good weight transfer. So now I am still continuing to work on stuff but I have made it a lot easier to myself.
AC: What was the biggest adjustment you had to make, going from college/Greeneville in 2009 to Lexington this past season?
AB: The biggest adjustment is the traveling. In school you flew places. In Greeneville we did not travel far. Long bus rides that go all through the night and different hotels is a culture shock. You have to get yourself to adjust to sleeping on a bus, as well as eating a different places. Trying to be healthy is hard to do when you're on the road. You may only have a fast food place by your hotel. It is a different lifestyle, but like I said after you go through it once, with trial and error, you prepare yourself for the next go round.
AC: What are the types of end-of-year conversations you have with teammates, coaches and other Astros organizational guys?
AB: Most of the conversations between players as the year came to an end were about what the off season was going to be like. I still stay in contact with guys that I played with, whether it be through Call of duty, Facebook, or Twitter - we all still have a good relationship. Coaches just said work hard. They gave us some information about what we need to do in the off season to get better. Not much was said because when you're with people for seven months, especially coaches, you get a great idea of what they focused on during the season. So you take that information and work on that in the off season.
AC: What will you be working on this off-season as you prepare for 2011, and do you know where you'll be playing next year?
AB: I am going to be working on eating healthier. I want to put on some weight but maintain the little speed I have. I do want to get faster and stronger. There is always work to be done on the field, as well. I want to find a swing that makes me feel comfortable. I found that during the season, it's just time to build off that. I will also prepare myself to play wherever. Last year I played first, third and left. If I show I can hit at this level playing many positions, that will help me out. I do not have an idea of where I will be next year - I can just work hard and go to spring training ready to play.

Big thanks to Aaron for taking the time to do this, and as always, we'll try to check in with him later on in the off-season. And if you're a new citizen of Astros County, be sure to read his weekly posts last year - they give great insight into the life of a professional baseball player.

Eddie's Farm Employees of the Month: June
Another month has come and gone for Eddie's Farm. So who are the Employees of the Month?
Round Rock
Position Player: Drew Locke. Locke followed up a strong May with another strong month, earning the honor of the Eddie's Farm Employee of the Month. Locke was 32x101 (.317/.343/.525) with 14 extra-base hits.
Pitcher: His one brutal outing for the Astros notwithstanding, this goes to Josh Banks. He was 3-1 (7-2 since April), allowing 23H/8BB in 30IP for the Express in June, for a 1.50 ERA. Hitters managed a .219 line against him.
Honorable mention: Jonah Bayliss. In eight appearances (11IP) in June, Bayliss allowed 4H/1ER, 14K:0BB.
Corpus
Position Player: Jack Shuck. Hit .347/.426/.376 in 25 games in June with 13K:14BB.
Honorable Mention: German Duran. Hit .342/.398/.425, with 8K:8BB.
Pitcher: Jordan Lyles (though you could insert Doug Arguello in here, too). Allowed 29H/7ER in 30IP, with 33K:9BB, and was rewarded with a 1-2 record.
Lancaster
Position Player: Initially had a hard time giving it to a 27-year old in the California League, but Lee Cruz hit .400/.429/.650 in June, so that took care of that.
Pitcher: Wasn't even close. Dallas Keuchel was 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA in four starts, allowing 25H/6ER in 27.1IP, with 23K:6BB. Looking forward to seeing him in Corpus.
Lexington
Position Player: Our Boy Aaron Bray followed up an April in which his OPS was .440 with a May in which his OPS was .470. June, however, saw him post a .391/.451/.516 line, for a .966 OPS. J.D. Martinez posted a .994 OPS in June, but since Bray is Our Boy, and hit .391, he's our winner.
Pitcher: Zach Grimmett. In seven appearances (20IP), Grimmett allowed 12 hits and five walks for a 1.80 ERA.
We'll pick up with Tri-City, Greeneville, and the GCL Astros when they've had a chance to play more than 10 games.

Eddie's Farm: June 29
Round Rock
It really got away from Shane Loux in the seventh inning, as the Sounds scored three runs, turning a 2-2 game into a 5-2 lead, and adding one more for a 6-3 win over Round Rock. Loux threw 7IP, 9H/5ER, 8K:0BB, and allowing two solo homers. Three two-out hits in the 7th led to the difference in the game. Yordany Ramirez was plunked on the hand and added two hits, and Matt Kata was 2x4 (double, homer in the 9th, and a walk). Tommy Everidge hit one of the longest homeruns I've ever seen - certainly the longest I've seen at Greer Stadium - in the 4th.
Man of the Match: Matt Kata
Corpus
Off!
Lancaster
Doubled up by Modesto, after allowing eight runs in the first three innings, and the JetHawks lose 10-5. Kyle Greenwalt gave up 8H/8ER, 1K:3BB, and got eight outs (how's that for symmetry?) Leandro Cespedes threw the final 5.1IP, 3H/2R (1ER), 2K:1BB. The JetHawks were 4x17 w/RISP, and left 12 on base. Freddy Parejo was 3x4 with an RBI, and Albert Cartwright was 2x5 with an RBI for your multi-hit games. Brandon Wikoff was 1x3 with 2BB.
Man of the Match: Leandro Cespedes
Lexington
The Legends overcame a 5-run 2nd inning by Hickory (who overcame a 4-0 Legends lead by the middle of the 2nd) for a 6-5 win over the Crawdads. Robby Donovan threw 6H/5ER, 1K:2BB in 2IP. Zach Grimmett came in with 4IP in relief, allowing 2H/0ER, 5K:1BB. Wander Alvino (2IP) and Kirk Clark (1IP) allowed a hit and a walk each, but no runs. The top of the order provided nine of the 14 hits, and five of the six runs. Jose Altuve, in the leadoff spot, was 3x4 with 2R. Our Boy Aaron Bray was 4x5 with an RBI and 2R. J.D. Martinez was 2x4 with a run and an RBI. Jiovanni Mier also added two hits on the night. Over his last ten games (12x33), Mier is hitting .364/.463/.485.
Man of the Match: I'm going with Our Boy Aaron Bray.
Tri-City
If you're counting at home, this 4-0 loss to Vermont is the second straight shutout, and the ValleyCats have scored two runs in their last three games (allowing 13). Bobby Doran allowed 6H/4ER, 1K:2BB. Andrew Robinson threw two scoreless innings, and Adam Champion and Jorge De Leon added one scoreless inning each. If you're in a hurry, don't worry, this won't take long. The ValleyCats got two hits - Wilton Infante (in the 4th) and Ben Orloff (in the 9th), while Hernandez, Afenir, and Orloff also added walks. Thanks to two GIDPs, the ValleyCats only got 29 plate appearances. Mike Kvasnicka got the night off.
Man of the Match: Let's give it to Andrew Robinson, eh?
Greeneville
Game 1: Oooh, durn pitch counts. Angel Gonzalez had a no-hitter going through 6IP, striking out four, and walking two. B.J. Hagen allowed 3H/2ER, 1K, in 1IP for the 7-2 win. Jhonny Medrano, Marcus Nidiffer, and Bubby Williams all hit homers.
Man of the Match: Angel Gonzalez
Game 2: Greeneville wins again, 9-1. Jeiler Castillo, Garrett Bullock, and Ryan Cole each threw 2IP with 2Ks, with Bullock getting the win after Castillo allowed 4H/1ER. Justin Harper threw 1IP, 1K:1BB. Chris Wallace and Marcus Nidiffer hit homers, and the Gastros spread out nine runs over seven RBIs. Hector Rodriguez was 3x5 (RBI), while Wallace and Nidiffer added an extra hit each.
Man of the Match: Marcus Nidiffer (dude hit two HRs yesterday).
GCL Astros
The GCL Astros and GCL Cardinals traded 4-run innings, but the Cardinals scored the last five runs for a 10-6 win. Danilo Del Rio allowed 4H/4ER, 3K:1BB in 5IP, while the bullpen of Emmanuel Cedano, Matison Smith, Jeremiah Meiners, and Juan Mojica combined for 3IP, 7H/6R (5ER), 4K:2BB in relief. Meiners allowed three hits and a walk for three earned runs in 0.1IP, and his ERA is currently 67.50. Kyle Redinger was 2x4 with a triple, 3RBI, and a walk. Jose Fernandez was 2x3 with a walk, and Monzon, DeLome (rehabbing), and Parra added RBIs.

Corpus
Jeez, Corpus. Gave up three in the 4th, got two back in the 8th, but it wasn't enough, and the Hooks lose 3-2. Jeremy Johnson threw 5.1IP, 6H/3ER, 6K:2BB and took the loss. Nelson Peguero struck out three, walked two, and allowed a hit in 1.2IP while Matt Nevarez allowed a hit in 1IP. Interesting line from Danny Meszaros: 1IP, 0H/0ER, 4K:1BB. Yeah, four strikeouts. How? Marcus Lemon walked. Renny Osuna struck out looking. Matthew Lawson struck out swinging, but it was "wild," and Lawson advanced to first. Taylor Teagarden struck out swinging. Andy Jenkins struck out looking. Seven hits for the Hooks - all singles. Shuck (1x3, 2BB), Cabral (1x5, RBI), Clemens (1x2, 2BB), Van Ostrand (2x4, RBI), Florentino, and Butera collecting.
Man of the Match: Danny Meszaros

Stockton was up 8-0 before the Hooks got on the board, and go on to win 13-6. Ross Seaton allowed 6H/7R (6ER), 1K:3BB in 2.1IP. Mike Modica struck out two in 1.2 perfect innings, while Ashton Mowdy (3IP) and Brian Wabick (2IP) combined for 11H/6ER, 5K:4BB in 5IP. Thriller in Lexington, as the Legends rally from 5-3 down to defeat Rome 10-6. Jose Cisnero threw 5IP, 3H/3ER, 5K:2BB, while Arcenio Leon allowed 2H/2ER, 2K:1BB, 3WP, in 2IP. Kirk Clark blew his 4th save, but got his third win with 2IP, 2H/1ER, 0K:1BB. Jose Altuve was 4x5, and Our Boy Aaron Bray was 2x5 with a double and 2RBI. The ValleyCats scored eight runs on eight hits - with only two for extra bases - and drew eight walks. Ben Orloff and Jacke Healey got two hits and an RBI each. Wilton Infante and Frank Amonte drew two walks each.
Man of the Match: Tommy Shirley.
Greeneville
The Gastros got the go-ahead run in the bottom of the 8th and defeated Johnson City 4-3. Mike Foltynewicz made his 25-pitch debut, throwing 1IP and allowing a hit.
Citizen Larry was at the game and had this report:
Mike Foltynewicz looked sharp in his debut for Greeneville tonight. He was on a strict 25 pitch count which he did confirm to me before the game. 1IP with one baserunner picked off first, one groundout and one flyout. He faced the minimum 3 batters with the single allowed erased by a nice looking pickoff.
John Frawley threw 3IP, 7H/2ER, 5K:0BB; Andrea Lucati threw 1IP, 2H/1R (0ER); Jamaine Cotton (1.1IP), 3H/0ER, 1K:1BB; B.J. Hagen (1.2IP, 1H); Travis Smink got the save with 1IP, 1K. Jonathan Merritt, Emilio King, and Jhonny Medrano (RBI) were each 2x4 with a double, and Chris Wallace and Telvin Nash added RBIs.

Bray Day! Episode 19
Aaron Bray's postings have been a touch more rare lately as he's busy, you know, playing for the Astros. But he did have a minute to check in and fill us in on what's happening in minor-league Astros camp:
Things are going well down here in Florida. The weather is nice down here, and we go hard everyday from early a.m. to mid afternoon. We started playing games - playing three, one against each of the nearby teams: Detroit, Atlanta and Washington. Things are going to start getting a little heated as people will be cut and are battling for spots on rosters. Today we had an off-day so I was able to go out and play some golf, it was nice to have a day away from the field. Tomorrow it is back to work and finish hard since we have only about a week left. We have one camp day left and the rest of the days we play games.

It's Bray Day! Episode 18
Aaron Bray was the 27th round draft pick for the Astros in last June's amateur draft. He was also the winner of the Astros County Adopt-a-Player contest. Each week, Aaron will write a column for Astros County detailing his off-season. Check the sidebar for archives.
Yesterday, Aaron was able to give us a brief update of his Spring Training, so far...
-
Spring Training is going well. I arrived Sunday night. Today, Monday, I was able to watch the big league guys take B.P. I went and did some hitting on my own, since it's voluntary for me. It is kind of awe-striking to be so close to big leaguers. I thinks that is what's good about me coming early. I can get my feet wet and get the jitters out. I am excited for my official day to get here, that way I can start doing some things officially. I will say this: the weather has been nice the two days I have been here - 70 today while I was in the batting cages. I am looking forward to having a great time and working hard. Not much has happened up to this point. Check back in a few days and hopefully that will change and I will be busy.

It's that time of year. I am sure most of you are really excited about the upcoming season. I know I am, and I cannot wait to arrive in Florida. I am finishing up my workouts here in Charlotte and will be heading out the 27th of Feb. to get down to Kissimmee. I will be making a stop in Jacksonville to stay the night with family, and Sunday I will get up and get to Kissimmee. Monday, I will start working out for a few days before my official report date, which is the 9th of March.
I actually plan on starting to pack this week so I know what I need to go get before I leave. I will of course be packing clothes and toiletries, but as for the good stuff...I will have my laptop. I use that to be able to talk to my girlfriend and I will be able to see how big my pup grows while I am gone. My laptop will be used the most, it gets a little boring sitting in the hotel. Then my iPod. I love listening to music especially when I am driving down, laying in bed or on the bus. My PlayStation 3 will be packed and Call of Duty will be ready to be played when I arrive at my hotel. Then all of my baseball equipment, which most of it will probably be waiting on me when I get down there, thanks to my agent. I'll have my gloves, Old Hickory Bats, batting gloves, 3n2 cleats and dri-fits.
I am eager to get down there and get to work. But I am very nervous, because I have heard what to expect from former minor league players, but I have to see for myself what it is exactly like. Wondering what Spring Training is like has been running through my head the past month. What to expect, what will I do, how does it work....Those questions run through my head as I prepare for my upcoming trip.
I hope all of you have a great week and I look forward to giving you updates throughout my time in Florida.

Bray Day - Episode 16

Hello Fans,
I'm sure you all are excited as Spring Training is right around the corner. As I mentioned before, my days are usually filled with working out during the day. That normally lasts five hours. I am sure to make time to get some Call of Duty games in on my Play Station 3. After that I make time to take care of a recent addition to my family that would be my new puppy Astro (which was not the name I gave it, it came from my girlfriend). He is pretty energized and keeps me busy during the rest of the day into the night, and is fun to play with. That's really been my days this week. I have gotten after it in the weight room the last month and a half, and put on some good weight. Now I am working on getting faster. With steroids being cut out, I'm sure a lot of you have noticed the change of the game. You see more bunting, stealing and hit and runs. That will take me into my question for the week.
You are the all-time hits leader in UNC-Charlotte history. What were a couple of the biggest moments you enjoyed with the 49ers?
The way we played at Charlotte was that way. We bunted for hits (no sacrifices unless it was the 9th inning), we stole bases, and used our speed to beat teams. I enjoyed that a lot. Since the question asked me about big moments, I will brag for a second - which I hate doing because I go out and play hard every time, I am not a flashy player. But moments that I enjoyed were being a Freshman All-American and Conference Freshman of the year.
The reason why is because not too many freshmen get to see the field. I feel with those accolades it showed how dedicated and serious I was to my older teammates about playing this game and being a 49er. My sophomore and junior year we made it to the NCAA Tourney. My sophomore year we were one game away from a Super Regional and we broke many school records - one that sticks out is 49 wins. That team I played on my sophomore year is arguably the best Charlotte team. So to be a part of that was really cool. Since we made two NCAA Regionals we won our Conference Tourney twice, so I have two Championship rings. To have those rings and the memories is something I won't forget.
In my senior year I was fortunate enough to break a great player's record for hits in a career. I did it in a Conference tourney game that kept us from being eliminated. Also the fight our team had: we lost so many kids to injury, and a couple of us were playing hurt, so to win over 30 games and become the winningest class was cool. I also have to say beating UNC-Chapel Hill (on March 25, 2009; 2-1), who was ranked in the top 5 was really cool. After all the years of losing to them in the 9th inning, we finally got a win against them.
Really just being able to see the baseball team at Charlotte grow into what has become. My freshman year we played on a really nice field with a big section of bleachers. Those bleachers grew into a $6m stadium. Just to be a part of the rise of the baseball team is something I have enjoyed.
I hope all of you have a great week!!!

Hello Astros fans! I have been busy the past couple days. I hope all of you are doing well. I thought I was busy when I was going to class, but without class I feel as if I am busier. I'm up early I go to the gym. After the gym I am either in the practice gym at UNC-Charlotte doing agility drills or down at the field to do my conditioning. Then once that's done, I get to mess around on the field. I usually throw and hit. This week I plan on starting to take ground balls and fly balls. Why both? I guess being considered a utility guy I will try not to limit myself to the infield. As I say every week, I am excited to get down there to Florida and start playing. I feel after one season I learned a lot of stuff to make me better. I took what I was taught by my coaches and used some advice from other players and molded the two together. Once you feel like it is all clicking together, you're itching to get out and show it off, and that's how I feel now. This leads into my question for the week.
What do you think is the biggest distraction that keeps guys from "making it" in baseball?
There are so many factors to baseball players not making it. I mean I believe all the sports have the same reasons for players not making it. You have girls, money, drugs, off field issues. To me as a player the one I feel that gets most players is work ethic. The reasons listed above are obvious and rare. But work ethic can take the top athletes out of their game. There are sport gods and they are always watching. I feel like if your work ethic is not very good you will not make it. If you're in the weight room and you're skipping reps or cutting your running short and just doing it to be seen, you're not hurting the coach or any of your teammates, you're hurting yourself and it will cost you. I was told by someone that if you don't make it, it better be because they took the jersey off of you. So you work hard and give them a reason not to let you go. You work hard, you do what you're asked. It is all about integrity. Doing the little things when no one is watching. I feel that a good strong work ethic keeps players in the game, also along with talent. But if your work ethic is good, you will keep getting better as a player.
I hope you all have a great week!!!!!

Astros fans,
Hope all is well. I'm sure everyone is all caught up in the Mark McGwire news. So I'm going to stray away from that topic. I hope all of you are ready for a new season up ahead. I know that the talent we had on our team in Greeneville last year is good and looks promising. I know all this hard work I have put in the last few months will pay off. So, be excited for the future if the organization.
You mentioned talking to some people about Spring Training, what was some of the advice they gave you?
As for my question, advice that I received was advice you get all the time. Spring Training is not easy and you need to bust your butt. Showing up to spring training in shape means make sure you're more than in shape. So I've used the advice of guys who have been successful in the minor leagues. They also told me that when you get the opportunity to show what you have, you make the best of the situation. Spring training could be discouraging to some because you feel you don't get enough at bats or enough innings on the mound.
I hope you all have a great week.
Aaron
Spring Training is a little over a month away! There's no way I'm getting through all the minor leaguers!

Hello Astro Fans,
It has been a while since I have posted. I hope all of you had a great Christmas and New Years. I know I did and I can't wait to head to Florida to get away from this cold weather. I was in Pennsylvania for Christmas and came back right before New Year's.
So you've graduated and are done with school. How did finals go and what happens now?
My question will be answered now due to the fact that school is over now and exams went well. Now all I have to do is concentrate on baseball. I have been working out hard and getting into shape. My days freed up with no class and go to the gym and the field to work out. Then to an indoor facility to work out at as well. Things have been going well. I have made some changes, talked to some guys that have played pro ball before and got some input. I found out how to take Spring Training. It is long and hard. Being in shape is my number one priority. I am looking forward to going to Florida, it is only a few months away. I hope all of you have a great week.
Thanks, Aaron

Hello Astros Fans,
I am taking a break from studying for my exams, which start tomorrow at 11:30. This whole school year has been very different from previous years. I found myself being lost, I did not have baseball or a strict schedule to follow. It has been a different school year, but it is over with after this week. As I always mention, I am so excited and can't wait for Spring Training. I have been working hard and will continue to do so. I hope all of you are having a great week and looking forward to the Holiday Season.
What areas of your game are you focusing on improving this season over last?
As a player, I am working on all aspects of my game. I am not limiting myself to working on one particular aspect. I am working on getting faster and quicker along with trying to get stronger. So I have been in the gym running and in the weight room lifting. I have also been going indoors to hit, throw and take ground balls. Now with school being over, I will be able to go outside to a field if the weather cooperates. It helps out that I have my brother and dad to help me out when I need someone to throw to me. Then my school (UNC-Charlotte) has been nice to allow me to come out there when I want to get some work in. I am just looking forward to getting better and showcasing my hard work at spring training.
Have a good week,
Aaron

Hello Astro Fans,
It is the month of Christmas, which means school is almost over. For me it will be over for good. I am busy finishing up on some papers and will be busy studying. The days are going by and before you know it I'll be in Spring Training. I am excited and cannot wait. I hope all of you had a Great Thanksgiving and are looking forward to Christmas.
Finals will be over soon, and you'll be a graduate with a History degree. What will you do to celebrate, and what happens to your training regimen once you get over said celebration?
My celebration will be working out harder. With my schedule clearing up, my days will be strictly baseball now. Which excites me. My workouts will now be everyday until I leave to go to Florida. They will get harder than in the past couple months. Having all the free time is good. I will be able to concentrate on baseball and baseball only.
As I said earlier, readers. I hope you all are having a good end to your year and are looking forward to Astros baseball.
Thanks,
Aaron

Hello Astros fans!
Sorry for the late response. I had a good week, and I am looking forward to this week, with the short week of class and Thanksgiving coming up. I was able to go to Athens and watch Georgia play Kentucky; unfortunately, my team lost.
What was the atmosphere of the clubhouse like, and what was the best prank of the season?
Our locker room was good, we had a good atmosphere. Everyone got along, and we were always joking around with each other. That's what made the season go by well, because we had that good relationship. As for pranks, there weren't many. We got Jio Mier with the shaving cream after a walk-off bomb. When players got bats, we would hide the box of bats, just little things that would be funny - not harmful. Everybody have a good week and a great Thanksgiving!
