Jon Gaston is quite excited about the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks

The Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks are an independent baseball team. They play in the American Association of Independent Baseball Teams whose season starts on May 17 at El Paso. They're also former Astro prospect Jon Gaston's new favorite team, having apparently signed with them today.

Gaston:
Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks here I come! First time i've been really excited to start playing baseball in a few years. #newbeginnings

Fargo-Moorhead is managed by Doug Simunic, who is not the father of Andy Simunic, who plays for Corpus Christi. No, Doug Simunic got into an on-field fight with the opposing team's manager in 2009.

I guess Corpus Christi and the Astros organization can't hold a candle to Fargo-Moorhead. :-(

More minor league cuts

It seems that there may have been another round of cuts in minor league camp this morning. All we know for sure is that outfielder Jon Gaston has been cut. Gaston had a monster season at Lancaster in 2009 when he hit 35 homeruns with a slash line of .278/.367/.598, but he's regressed in the two seasons since with Corpus Christi.

We'll update as more names come out.

*Edit: Jayne over at What the Heck, Bobby has posted the list of today's minor league cuts. The list includes pitchers Adam Champion, Robert Donovan, David Duncan, Justin Gill, Kyle Greenwalt, Matison Smith, and Brandt Walker, outfielders Jon Gaston and Devon Torrence, and catcher Jacob Meskin.

Astros release Duke, Cust

The Astros have released Zach Duke and Jack Cust, according to Alyson Footer.

Honestly, it was easy to see this coming. I texted my cousin, a Braves fan, on Sunday afternoon and said that the Braves should be charged with murdering Zach Duke's career. In the previous post, we looked at Duke's stats, and his outing on Sunday sent his ERA up to 11.30 - and judging from Sunday's start (which I watched), he was lucky that's as high as it went.

Cust had one hit - a single - in 25 ABs this Spring. That's pretty much all you needed to know. Cust signed a two-year contract with the Astros - $600,000 (not-guaranteed) for 2012, and a guaranteed $1m option, if it was exercised.

Duke's contract was a minor-league deal, so there should be no major financial impact.

Also, it appears as though Jon Gaston has been released, as well. Gaston was the Astros' 7th Round pick in 2008, and busted out in 2009 - his 2nd year of pro ball - with Lancaster, hitting .278/.367/.598, with 35HR (tied for minor-league lead) and 100RBI. 81 of his 144 hits in '09 were for extra-bases. In the last two seasons - both with Corpus - he posted OPSeses of .720, and .646, respectively, striking out 212 times to 74 walks (he drew 71 walks in 2009 alone).

Greg Rajan gives some odds

Our Buddy Greg Rajan does some looking at the Hooks' roster to determine who should move up, who should be back, and who should, uh, not.

A quick spoiler alert, those who Rajan says should not return, with a pull from Rajan's comments in parentheses (click the link to see the whole article - well worth your read):

Jon Gaston: It’s become apparent his monster year in High-A was a product of Lancaster’s launching pad.

Kyle Greenwalt: Took his lumps as both a starter and reliever here, which might mean a ticket back to Lancaster.

Brad James: It’s time to cut the cord.

Blake King: Claimed off waivers from St. Louis and had an alarming number of walks.

T.J. Steele: Somewhere in Houston, there’s an Astros official who views him as a five-tool prospect. Hooks fans didn’t see that form in two seasons.

Jose Carlos Thompson: First-year pro might be best served by playing regularly at a lower level.

Battle Royal! Clemens vs. Gaston vs. Hinze!

Deputy Street did such an amazing amount of work that it would be ridiculous not to post this. Many of you have sent emails or messages via Twitter asking why in the hell Kody Hinze wasn't promoted to Corpus with Chris Wallace. I have no idea, but let's get an idea about what Hinze is doing so far in Lancaster this season, compared to two of the finest seasons Lancaster has seen: 2009 Koby Clemens and 2009 Jon Gaston. Both players saw their Prospect stock rise dramatically after breaking out in a ballpark with the relative gravity of the Moon, let's compare, shall we?

At Home, Pre-All Star Break:

Name (Year)ABsAvg/OBP/SLGK:BBXBH-RBI
Clemens (09)216.352/.438/.65348:3135-72
Gaston (09)260.308/.404/.69278:3852-56
Hinze (11)120.325/.464/.60832:3116-26

On the Road, Pre-ASB

Name (Year)ABsAvg/OBP/SLGK:BBXBH-RBI
Clemens (09)224.330/.409/.58963:2338-51
Gaston (09)258.248/.342/.50486:3329-44
Hinze (11)114.368/.503/.71928:3020-33

Alright, before we get much further, let's take a look at a few things:

1) Prior to 2009, where Clemens posted an OPS of 1.036, his career high in OPS had been .859, and that was in 42 games at Greeneville/Tri-City. In 2008, his OPS was .792 (.268/.369/.423). So to have a 210 point bump in OPS is what you might call a "fluke." And sure enough, in Corpus, his average was down 100 points, and his OPS was .825. So far he's hitting .231/.332/.396.

2) Same thing with Gaston. His OPS in 62 games at Tri-City in 2008 was .577. He had two homers and one triple in 236 plate appearances. So when he goes off for 35 homers and 15 triples in 2009 with a .966 OPS, it makes no sense, other than it's a product of the environment - and that holds up with his road splits.

3) Kody Hinze, however, is a little bit of a different animal. He struggled in 2009, only playing in 59 games and posting a .722 OPS. This is coming off a 2008 where he had an .831 OPS in 55 games at Greeneville. So aside from an injury-plagued 2009, his SLG hasn't been below .457, and his OBP has been above .370. In other words, he has a track record of high OBP/SLG. Now, is a line of .346/.483/.662 ridiculous? Of course - it's video game ridiculous, but Hinze also has 60K:61BB so he's otherwise getting on base.

4) While there's plenty of time for his to regress back to just "stupid good," it's important to note that Hinze's OPS is 151 points higher on the road than it is at home, while Clemens' Road OPS dropped by 92 points, and Gaston's dropped by 250 points. This sort of removes the doubt about the Lancaster Effect.

5) So why didn't Hinze get moved up? After all, he will be 24 and, wouldn't you know it - the average age of Hooks batters is 23.9 years old. A couple of reasons, maybe: (a) Jimmy Van Ostrand is having a decent year at 1B for Corpus, hitting .288/.360/.454 where as a team the Hooks are hitting .261/.321/.373. His .814 OPS is 4th on the team. And if you want to advance JVO as a 1B to OKC to clear the path for Hinze at Corpus, then you'll need to do something with Koby Clemens, currently "holding down" 1B at OKC. (b) The Astros don't have a clue what they're doing, with no rhyme or reason to who advances through the system.

Murillo Gouvea allowed 4H/1R (0ER) in 3.2IP; Juan Minaya allowed 3H/2ER in 3IP, and David Martinez got the win with 1H/0ER, 3K:1BB in 2IP.

Jhonny Medrano (RBI), Tyler Burnett (two doubles, BB, 2RBI), Ben Orloff (2RBI), Roberto Pena (2B, 2RBI), and Emilio King (2B, RBI) had two hits each. Delino DeShields was 0x4 with two walks, and is now hitting .202.

Man of the Match: Tyler Burnett

Tri-City (1-1)

And...that's total domination as the ValleyCats bounce back for a 10-0 win against Vermont, scoring ten runs on nine hits. Jonas Dufek allowed 2H/0ER, 2K:2BB in 3IP, while Dayan Diaz gave up a hit and three walks in 3IP; Travis Smink allowed 2H/0ER in 3IP to close it out.

Drew Muren was 2x3 with 2BB, Zach Johnson was 2x4 with an RBI, and Kellen Kiilsgaard was 2x3 with a double, homer, two walks, and 2RBI. Matt Duffy was 1x3 with 3RBI, and John Hinson drew two walks. Justin Gominsky, John Hinson, and Drew Muren also stole bases.

Man of the Match: Gotta go with Kiilsgaard.

Man of the Match: Jose Carlos Thompson

Lexington (29-33)

Hickory jumped all over Lexington in an 8-1 win over the Legends. Tanner Bushue allowed 4IP, 5H/3ER, 1K:2BB while Juan Minaya walked all three batters he faced (with a Lyon-esque 0IP, 0H/3ER, 0K:3BB). Gabe Garcia gave up 1H/1ER, 1K:1BB in 1IP, and Luis Cruz allowed 2H/1ER, 1K:1BB in 4IP of relief.

Eddie's Farm: April 26

Oklahoma City (7-12)

The RedHawks only scored in one inning. Ordinarily, this would mean a loss. But not when, in that one inning, you score nine runs. OKC wins 9-3 over Round Rock, taking three of four at Dell Diamond after getting swept at OKC. Doug Arguello threw 5IP, 5H/2ER, 5K:1BB for his first win of the season. Wesley Wright, Gustavo Chacin, and Sergio Escalona got out of their relief appearances unscathed, while Fernando Rodriguez got tagged with a run.

Koby Clemens was 3x5 with 2HR/4RBI, and both homers coming in the second inning. J.B. Shuck (3B, BB, RBI), Collin DeLome (2B), and Tommy Manzella (BB, 2RBI) had two hits each. Clint Barmes was 1x4 with 2B/RBI, GIDP in seven innings.

Man of the Match: Koby Clemens

Corpus (7-11)

The bullpen straight nutted it, allowing three runs in the bottom of the 9th and two runs in the bottom of the 10th for a 6-4 loss at Midland. Ross Seaton threw another strong start, going 6IP, 7H/1ER, 4K:3BB. Shane Wolf and Patrick Urckfitz each threw a scoreless inning. And then David Carpenter came in and gave up three homers - two homers - two with 2 outs in the bottom of the 9th, for 5H/5ER in 1+IP, the BS/L.

Jon Gaston was 3x5 with two triples, Brandon Wikoff and J.D. Martinez had two hits each. Wikoff, after starting the season 0x6, has 9H in his last 16ABs. Brandon Barnes, in his second start at 2B, hit a 2-run homer.

Man of the Match: Jon Gaston.

Lancaster (10-9)

The JetHawks rallied for a come-from-behind (redundant, much?) 3-2 win over Rancho Cucamonga, which is always fun to type out. Jake Buchanan threw 6IP, 4H/2ER, 3K:4BB. Wes Musick got the win with 2.1IP of hitless relief, and Kirk Clark notched his 7th save of the season with 1H/0ER, 1K:0BB in 0.2IP.

Austin Wates had the big stick, with a 3x4 (BB, 2B, RBI, SB) night - he has an eight-game hit streak going on. Jake Goebbert had two hits, while Jose Altuve (1x5) and Ben Heath (1x3) had the other RBIs.

Man of the Match: Austin Wates.

Lexington (10-9)

Rough night for the pitching staff as Lexington falls 13-6 to Kannapolis. Brad Dydalewicz continued his struggles with 3.2IP, 7H/7ER, 1K:0BB. Murillo Gouvea threw 2.1IP and allowed 3H/2ER, 1K:2BB. David Martinez allowed 2H/4R (1ER), 2K:0BB in 2IP, and Jason Chowning threw a scoreless inning.

Ben Orloff was 3x5 with an RBI, and Dan Adamson was 3x4 with a double and 2RBI. Adam Bailey (RBI), Telvin Nash (BB, RBI), and Chris Wallace (BB) had two hits each.

Man of the Match: Would go to Orloff, but he added an error and a caught stealing to his total, so it goes to Telvin Nash.

Jon Gaston, on the Corpus Effect

George Vondracek has a story on how Whataburger Field is a brutal wake-up call for hitters who are used to the thin air of Coors Lite (what we call Lancaster's stadium).

Jon Gaston:
I kind of saw the wind and I tried to change my swing. It was pretty much brutal. And then after I got talked to by Wes (Clements), our manager, and some other coaches, I just went back to being my old self, see how far I could hit it. If it doesn't got out, oh well. If it does, awesome. It worked out pretty good.

"This year, going back there, I've just got to be mentally strong the whole season, be more convinced with my approach."

Koby Clemens:
"I guess the best way to put it is half the field is a good hitter's park and the other half is not...In Corpus, I kind of got caught up in that wind situation and started pulling a lot. Most of my home runs were pulled. I think that had a big factor why the average dropped down so much because I kind of shut down a lot of the field. Yeah, the wind sucks but if you've got a good swing you're going to hit it through the wind."

Ed Wade: Friends are fleeting, but Major League glory IS FOREVER

McTaggart has an article on the Law Offices of Shuck, Steele, and Gaston, and the friendship they've developed from playing next to each other since the dawn of time.

Not so fast, sez Ed Wade:
"We tend not to look at them as a trio. We tend to look at them as individuals, because we're not looking for all them to graduate at the same time to the big league level. We're looking for the best player who can help us at any particular time and can get here and excel.

"It's great for them to have the camaraderie they've got and established those relationships, but at the end of the day, we're putting the best 25 players on the field, and if at some point in time, one of them is here, or all of them are here, the No. 1 criterion is how they help the Major League club."

'Stros before Bros.

Gaston realizes that, with the Astros outfield as it is, he may be auditioning for someone else, too:
"It's not just playing for the Astros, because you're playing for the other 29 teams, too. Whether you make it with the Astros or not, ultimately your goal is to make it to the Major Leagues. You've just got to get your opportunity and take advantage of it."

10 Non-Roster Invitees

So the Chronicle has a list of non-roster invitees who will be attending Big League Spring Training:

Those Ten are:
P Jordan Lyles
P Pat Urckfitz
C Rene Garcia
1B Koby Clemens
SS Jiovanni Mier
OF Jon Gaston
OF Drew Locke
OF J.D. Martinez
OF Jack Shuck
OF T.J. Steele

What might strike you is the presence of SS Jiovanni Mier, the Astros 1st pick in the 2009 draft. Well, don't you worry. Zach Levine says that Mier is in Big League Camp because of contract stipulations. So all you Jose Altuve enthusiasts need not worry, for the moment.

Wade:
“It gives these kids the chance to come in and see what the atmosphere is like on the big league side. And it gives Millsie and the coaches the chance to see some of the guys we talk about a lot. And frankly, it allows us to show that we’re making progress in player development.”

Exactly. Because he knows we'll be covering each Spring Training game like our lives depend on it.

The Hooks reflect on their 2010

Honorary Citizen Greg Rajan gets some reflection on Corpus' 2010.

Rajan:
The Hooks ended their season with five consecutive losses. In a way that was only fitting, since a losing streak ended up being the defining mark of their campaign — and something they couldn’t get around in the end.

Jon Gaston:
“(The losing streak) is something we’re unfortunately going to have our name attached to. But we’re also going to have some good things as well — Koby (Clemens’) good year, we had some good pitchers. There were a lot of good individual aspects. You’re going to have ups and downs, but we put it together as best we could.”

Manager Wes Clements:
It’s hard sometimes because our job is development. It’s tough, although our fan base is very knowledgeable here and they’re fully aware that development is a part of it, in spite of the wins and losses. We all want to win, and they want to win, too. But the bottom line is to get people better and get them to the big leagues better. We’ve accomplished quite a bit of that this year.”

Koby Clemens:
“From the defensive standpoint, I think it was more than anybody could expect. I felt like I was pretty comfortable at first and made a lot of good plays over there. From spring training to now, it’s a huge jump forward. I feel very comfortable over there. On the offensive side, the power numbers looked good, but the average (.241) was a little down, with a lot of strikeouts. There are positives, but also room for improvement."
