TRANZACTIONZ!

Our Buddy Greg Rajan tweets that Jonathan Meyer has been assigned to Corpus from Oklahoma City, with Matt Duffy moving up to OKC from Corpus. Also, pitcher Tyson Perez has been promoted from Lancaster to Corpus, and Jorge De Leon has been promoted Corpus to OKC.

Meyer, in his first stint at OKC (170 PAs) was hitting .221/.282/.286, while Duffy was hitting .302/.340/.455 in 216 PAs at Corpus. Duffy is also 25, just about a year older than his competition in the Texas League.

Tyson Perez has thrown 15.1IP, allowing 22H/10ER, 15K:9BB (but no homers in the homer-friendly Cal League). Former big-leaguer De Leon has allowed 18H/9ER, 18K:7BB in 20.2IP for Corpus this season.

Report: Jonathan Meyer gets invitation to Major League camp

Meyer was the Astros' 3rd round pick in the 2009 draft. In his debut Double-A year in 2013, Meyer hit .260/.318/.403 with 15 HR, a nice (and surprising) jump from his eight homers in Lancaster in 2012 with virtually the same number of plate appearances. At Corpus, he hit .283/.354/.467 compared to .238/.280/.340 away from Whataburger Field. His season somewhat crashed in August, when he hit .214/.250/.337 after hitting .271/.331/.421 from Opening Day to July 31.

Arizona Fall League participants announced

This afternoon Astros announced the PreStros who will be participating in the 2013 Arizona Fall League.

Pitchers: Jonas Dufek, Matt Heidenreich, Andrew Robinson, and Alex Sogard
Infielders: Japhet Amador, Nolan Fontana, Jonathan Meyer (active only on Wednesdays and Saturdays), and Delino DeShields.

They'll be playing for the Peoria Javelinas, managed by former ValleyCat manager Jim Pankovits. Dave Borkowski will also be a coach for the team, and trainer Bryan Baca will be present, as well.

Nice little write-up on Jonathan Meyer

2009 3rd Round pick Jonathan Meyer is doing fairly well in his repeat of Lancaster, hitting .290/.324/.458 with 14 extra-base hits. He does have 32K:6BB in 140PAs, but here's some good news (with a captip to Deputy Street): Baseball Prospect Report thinks he's for real.

I also know guys like this, who have “just enough,” paired with great instincts, work ethic and instincts, also find ways to play above their basic scouting physical grades and become everyday major leaguers.

There's a line in there about Meyer being a good NL bench player, which doesn't really help with the Astros going to the AL in about six months. But it's a good read otherwise.

After missing his last start, Paul Clemens went 5 innings and gave up 2 R on 4 H and 2 BB with 3 K for the win. Sergio Perez threw 3 innings, allowing 3 R on 5 H with 1 K. Jose Valdez went the final 1 inning with 1 H and 1 K.

Qs, As with Jonathan Meyer

2009 3rd Round pick Jonathan Meyer has spent three years in the Astros system, advancing a level in each season. In 2009, he hit .190/.301/.299 for Greeneville; .245/.304/.317 for Lexington in 2010; and .264/.343/.399 for Lancaster in 2011. He was kind enough to answer a few questions for us. Let's read, shall we?


AC: You have improved your numbers in each season you've been with the Astros, despite advancing a level in each season. What adjustments are you making, and what have your first three pro seasons taught you about playing?

JM: My first two years I really tired myself out. I've learned that I need to pace myself better throughout the season while still working hard and trying to get better everyday. I also set up a good routine for myself this year in Lancaster: I would come to the field two hours early to just relax and not have to rush to get ready.

AC: One of the things that stands out about your 2011 is that you hit 14 homers - after hitting five homers combined in 2009/2010. While most would chalk it up to the Lancaster Effect, half of those homers came on the road. How did your approach at the plate change in 2011 from the first two seasons?

JM: I did my best in this last off-season to get stronger. I focused mainly on my legs and core strength along with a lot of flexibility. Mentally, I focused on keeping my approach simple at the plate.

AC: You've been noted by teammate Jordan Comadena, as well as your manager and former high school coach, for your work ethic. Where does your drive and motivation come from?

JM: My dad has instilled motivation in me at a very young age. He taught me how to go about my business and what I need to do to be a better player. When I was around 4, I went to a Dodger game and asked my mom how Mike Piazza made money and she told me he made money playing baseball. I turned toward her and said, "That is what I wanna do." Ever since then, I have always been able to motivate myself because I love to play this game.

AC: It's been mentioned in a few interviews that you take pride in your defensive ability. After bouncing (in high school) between pitcher, catcher, and third base, where are you more comfortable, and how have those position changes helped your defense?

JM: In little league and high school I pitched and played short. Before pro ball I played third only a couple times in scout ball. The changes I have had to make at third is the quickness of the play. In Greenville, I rushed everything, I learned I have a lot more time over at third.

AC: What are you working on this off-season to prepare for a 2012 that will likely see you in Corpus at some point?

JM: I am going to work more on my range and strength this offseason.

Qs, As with Jordan Comadena

Catcher Jordan Comadena, signed as an undrafted free agent prior to the 2009 season, took some time to reflect on his 2011 season with us over the weekend. Please do enjoy:

AC: After bouncing back and forth in between Lancaster and Lexington in 2009 and 2010, you spent the whole year at Lancaster in 2011. Did that help you in getting comfortable in 2011?

JC: Yeah, it certainly is nice to be in one spot for the entire season and not have to move around and disrupt the routine that you have set. Obviously this past season being my third in Lancaster I had a pretty solid routine that I would follow to get myself ready to go. It's also nice to be in one spot so you can really gel with your team mates and develop a nice bond.

AC: Despite a strong slash line (.295/.389/.432) for Lancaster, the coaching staff only got you 115 plate appearances in 2011. Did you get any sort of reasoning for why that was the case?

JC: Well actually coming into the season I don't think I was even going to be allotted that many. I started the year inactive and had to wait for an injury of some sort to even be on the active roster. I started playing outfield early in the season due to injuries on the club and that was what got me on the field initially. Despite my very hot start at the plate I was still deactivated a couple more times. I'm never really given any reason, I just know that its out of my control and I need to be ready when my name is called. I have a lot of pride and high expectations for myself, I expect to do well whenever I play, regardless of the time between my at bats. I keep myself ready. It is frustrating because I've shown that I can preform at a high level, I just need to continue to do what I've been doing and eventually I'll get a break.

AC: Were there any differences from Lancaster 2010, compared to the 2011 team?

JC: Every team is a little different from year to year...I've found that the quicker a team can establish an identity and its players know their roles the better and the more success they will have. The 2010 Lancaster squad was alot of fun in the second half as we made a playoff run. The 2011 team was similar in that we finally put it all together more consistently in the second half.

AC: Who do you look at from Lancaster and think, "That guy's going to be a star?"

JC: When I look back at this year, two guys stand out to me (besides Altuve who is already there, what he was doing in Lancaster was unbelievable). The first person is Jonathan Singleton - at 19 years old he is a physical specimen. He's very strong and moves very well. He's got a nice lefty stroke with power to all fields. If he continues to progress with the talent that he has now he will be a force. The other person that stood out to me was Johnny Meyer. He is the best defensive third baseman that I have ever played with or against. I would routinely be amazed at some of the plays he made look so easy. Offensively he's getting better, he drives the ball to all fields and he handles off-speed well. On top of his God-given ability, Johnny is one of the hardest workers that I've played with. He refuses to let himself fail and he will always find a way to get better each day.

AC: What are your plans for this off-season, and has there been any communication from the Astros about you moving up to Corpus?

Apologies for the first of these in quite some time. Let's get to it, and pretend it never happened.

Oklahoma City (54-66)

OKC was all over Colorado, at one point scoring seven unanswered runs, for a 9-2 win. Lucas Harrell got the start, and didn't get ejected, or pulled before the 3rd inning, throwing 7IP, 11H/2ER, 5K:0BB (ERA: 2.67). Sam Gervacio and Xavier Cedeno each got three outs, with no hits, and 2Ks.

Brett Wallace continues his mastery of Triple-A with a 3x3, BB, 2RBI game. Jake Goebbert - called up ten days ago - was 2x4 with a double and an RBI. Drew Locke was 1x3 with 3RBI.

Corpus (42-75)

Game 1: Corpus loses to Arkansas, 4-2. Brett Oberholtzer took his first loss in the organization with 4IP, 2H/2ER, 6K:3BB. Arcenio Leon allowed 2H/2R (1ER), 0K:1BB, and Blake King allowed a walk in 1IP.

Emerson Frostad hit a solo homer, and added a single, to account for two of the Hooks' three runs. Kody Hinze had your other. David Flores provided the other RBI.

Man of the Match: Emerson Frostad.

Game 2: Arkansas got the first five runs, and beat Corpus 6-2. Erick Abreu lasted 1.1IP, allowing 5H/5ER, 0K:3BB. Jonnathan Aristil allowed 3H/1ER, which was given up by Henry Villar, who allowed two hits and two wild pitches.

Adam Bailey was 2x3 with two doubles and an RBI in his Double-A debut; Jon Gaston was 2x2 with a double and a walk.

Lancaster (43-74)

Lancaster got themselves rocked, 8-2 at the hands of San Jose. Jose Cisnero allowed 7H/5ER, 5K:2BB, 3HR in 4IP; Shane Wolf threw 3IP of long relief, giving up 2H/1ER, 4K:0BB, HR; Kyle Greenwalt had two baserunners but no runs, and Pat Urckfitz' tailspin continues with 3H/2ER in 1IP.

Jonathan Singleton (3B) and Jonathan Meyer (2B, RBI) had two hits each; Austin Wates was 1x2 with 2BB. Alex Todd made his High-A debut after 33 games in Greeneville, and went 1x2 with a double after striking out for Jio Mier - who was apparently inexplicably tossed.

Lexington (51-66)

Augusta scored the first six runs of the game, and then the last three for a 9-1 win over the Legends. Ruben Alaniz gave up 8H/6ER, 2K:1BB in 2.1IP; Alex Sogard threw the next 4.2IP, allowing 5H/2ER, 5K:2BB; Juan Minaya gave up 3H/1ER, 4K:1BB in 2IP.

Delino DeShields was 2x4 with a double, and Telvin Nash had your only XBH, with a double.

Man of the Match: Telvin Nash, who also had an outfield assist.

Tri-City (24-31)

Game 1: Despite allowing two runs to Hudson Valley in the top of the 1st, Tri-City got five back in the bottom half on their way to a 9-4 win. Adam Champion threw 6IP, 3H/2ER, 5K:2BB, as did Kristian Bueno, but without the strikeouts or walks, in 1IP.

Rafael Valenzuela was 3x4 with two doubles and 3RBI; Miguel Arrendell (BB) and Ryan McCurdy (2B, 3RBI) had two hits each. Chris Epps and Drew Muren were both 0x1, but with 3BB each.

Game 2: And Tri-City completes the sweep with a 2-1 win. Undrafted free agent Andrew Walter allowed an unearned run in 3IP, with 5K:2BB in 3IP, but Travis Blankenship picked up the win with 3IP, 2H/0ER. Ryan Cole got his 8th save of the year.

Neiko Johnson was 2x3 with a double; Rafael Valenzuela got a double as the ValleyCats win despite no extra-base hits, and no RBIs.

Greeneville (21-30)

Greenville scored the first seven runs of the night for an 8-3 win over Bristol. Ricardo Batista allowed 1H/0ER, 7K:2BB in 5IP; Danilo Del Rio got two outs, but gave up 4H/3ER, and Zach Dando threw the final 3.1IP, striking out three, walking one, and giving up no hits.

Jorge Sosa (2B, BB, RBI), Jordan Scott (BB, RBI), Jesse Wierzbicki (2B, HR, 2RBI), and Chan-Jong Moon (2B, 2RBI) all had two hits each. Ernesto Genoves was 1x4 with a walk and an RBI.

Corpus never trailed against Midland, winning 5-2. Dallas Keuchel had a typical performance, going 7IP, 5H/2R (1ER), 7K:0BB; Chris Hicks gave up a hit and a walk, but no runs in his Corpus debut, and Jason Stoffel hammered down his first save for the Hooks, throwing a perfect 9th.

Brandon Wikoff was 3x4, Kody Hinze (RBI, BB) and Jake Goebbert had two hits each. J.D. Martinez waas 1x4 with 2RBI, and Jimmy Paredes had an RBI and a double. Jonathan Villar was 1x2 with 2BB.

Lancaster (37-59)

Lancaster never led in this one, getting doubled up by High Desert 10-5. Our Boy Andrew Robinson had a rough one, allowing 11H/7ER, 2K:1BB in 4IP; Mike Ness (H, BB) and Bobby Doran (2ER) threw an IP in his first appearance since June 2, David Berner threw two scoreless IPs, Wes Musick gave up an ER.

Jonathan Meyer (2B, RBI), and Rene Garcia had two hits each; Adam Bailey and Erik Castro had a hit and 2RBI.

Lexington (45-51)

Charleston got a 4-run 4th to pace their way to a 6-5 win over Lexington. Mike Foltynewicz allowed 7H/4R (3ER), 3K:2BB in 4IP; Gabe Garcia gave up 3H/2ER, striking out six in 3IP, and Brian Streilein threw a perfect 8th.

Delino DeShields (BB, 2RBI, SB), Telvin Nash, Ben Heath (2B, RBI), Tyler Burnett (2 2B), and Ben Orloff (2B) had two hits each.

Tri-City (13-18)

The ValleyCats played the longest game in team history (4:40), and ended up losing to Connecticut 15-9 in 13 innings. Lots of pitchers used, as you can imagine. Juri Perez gave up 7H/4ER, 2K:3BB in 4IP; Garrett Bullock threw 2IP, 1ER; Travis Blankenship threw 1IP, 2H/1ER; Joan Belliard and Ryan Cole threw scoreless outings, Travis Smink gave up 2ER, and Kristian Bueno got tagged up for 6ER (3H/4BB) in 1IP, taking the loss.

Drew Muren and Bubby Williams each went 4x7 with 3RBI; Brandon Meredith was 3x5, and Neiko Johnson (3BB), Matt Duffy (RBI, BB), and Jacke Healey (HR, 2RBI) had two hits each.

Greeneville (10-19)

The Gastros had twice as many errors (4) as they had hits (2) in a 5-0 loss at Kingsport. Luis Ordosgoitti threw 4IP, 6H/4ER, 3K:0BB; Scott Zuloaga gave up a hit in 0.2IP; Mark Jones allowed 2H/1ER, 2K:1BB in 0.2IP, and Jeremiah Meiners allowed 1H/0ER, 2K:0BB in 2.2IP.

Chase Davidson (2B) and Chan-Jong Moon had your only hits of the game, while Jorge Sosa and Jesse Wierzbicki drew a walk. Errors were from Ordosgoitti, Darwin Rivera, Ernesto Genoves, and Moon.

GCL Astros (7-19)

And the GCL Astros got shutout 5-0 at the hands of the Marlins. Tanner Bushue made a rehab start, allowing 2H/1ER, 2K:0BB in 3IP; Michael Feliz allowed 5H/4R (2ER), 5K:2BB in 4IP, and Zach Hardoin threw a scoreless IP.

Yonathan Mejia (2B) and Jean Carlos Batista (SB) had two hits each, Javaris Reynolds and Joe Witkowski (BB) had the other hits. Kyle Redinger got tossed in the 7th after going 0x3 with 3K.

Oklahoma City (34-48)

Despite out-hitting Memphis 7-4, OKC managed to lose 5-2. Andy Van Hekken took the loss, allowing 3H/5ER, 4K:5BB and 2HR in 5.2IP. New RedHawk Mickey Storey allowed 1H/0ER, 2K:0BB in 2.1IP.

Robinson Cancel was 2x4 with 2RBI, J.B. Shuck was 0x3, but drew two walks. Humberto Quintero was 1x3 with a double in his rehab start.

Corpus (29-49)

Corpus battled back from a 4-1 deficit to defeat Tulsa 9-4 in a game where five errors were committed (three fielding errors by Jimmy Paredes). Ross Seaton allowed 6H/4R (3ER), 5K:1BB in 6IP and Kyle Greenwalt threw 3IP, faced 10 batters, and allowed 0H/0ER, 1K:0BB.

J.D. Martinez was 3x5 with a double, Jose Altuve was 2x5 with a double and 3RBI, Paredes (RBI) and Jake Goebbert (2B) also had two hits. Chris Wallace hit his first homer for Corpus.

Lancaster (30-48)

Good Lord. Modesto had a seven-run 4th and a six-run 5th for a 17-3 win over Lancaster. Robby Donovan allowed 5H/7R (6ER), 0K:3BB; Colton Pitkin gave up 3H/3ER, 0K:1BB; Wander Alvino allowed 2H/6R (0ER), 1K:3BB; Yordany Ramirez allowed 5H/1ER, 2K:1BB in 2.1IP and Chris Hicks threw a perfect 8th inning.

So four errors (Hinze, two from Mier, and one from Rene Garcia) accounted for seven runs. Jonathan Meyer was 2x4 with 2RBI, and Mier, Wates, and Hinze (RBI, 2BB) had your other hits.

Every Legend had a hit, but Ben Orloff (who committed the error leading to two runs in the 9th) went 2x4 (2B, 3B, 2RBI). Delino DeShields - who stole three bases, Enrique Hernandez, Adam Bailey, and Telvin Nash had a hit and a walk.

Lowell got two runs in the bottom of the 6th, and that's all the scoring. Lowell beat Tri-City 2-0. Kyle Hallock got the hard-luck loss, allowing 3H/2ER, with 11K:0BB in 7IP. Travis Smink allowed 2H/0ER in the 8th.

Oklahoma City (21-26)

Back and forth game between OKC and Fresno as the score went: 1-0 OKC, 1-1, 2-1 OKC, 4-2 Fresno, 5-4 OKC - and that was all by the middle of the 4th. Fresno then scored the next four runs for an 8-5 win over OKC. Sergio Perez threw 5IP, 7H/6ER, 5K:1BB, allowing 3HR. Andy Van Hekken allowed 3H/0ER in 1.1IP, and Ross Wolf allowed 2H/2ER, 2K:2BB with 2HR in 1.2IP.

Brandon Barnes is killing the ball, going 3x5 with two doubles and a triple with an RBI. In his last three games, Barnes is 6x12 with two doubles, a triple, and two homers. Tommy Manzella (2RBI, SB) and Jose Vallejo (RBI) each had two hits, and Robinson Cancel extended his hitting streak to 17 games was a 1x4, BB, RBI night.

Brutal loss for Corpus at Springfield last night as Xavier Cedeno took a no-hitter into the 8th inning. The Hooks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 9th, but Springfield got two back in the bottom half for the 2-1 win. Cedeno threw 7.2IP, 1H/0ER, 8K:5BB, WP, and didn't allow a ball in the air until Alan Ahmady lined out to 2B. Danny Meszaros was on the mound when Federico Hernandez caught a runner stealing at 3rd to end the inning. Patrick Urckfitz gave up a leadoff double, then a single, a groundout RBI, an intentional walk, and a walk-off single for the loss.

The Hooks only got five hits - Jimmy Paredes (2B), Jon Gaston (2B), Jimmy Van Ostrand (2B, BB), Cedeno, and a pinch-hit RBI from Everyone's Hero J.D. Martinez. T.J. Steele was 0x4 with 4Ks in the cleanup spot.

How do you respond to a 25-9 beatdown? By putting up five in the bottom of the first. Lancaster scored in every inning except the 6th for a 13-4 win over Rancho Cucamonga. Zach Grimmett threw 4.2IP, allowing 7H/2ER, 8K:2BB while Mike Ness got the win, allowing 3H/2R (0ER), 2K:0BB in 4IP of relief. Wander Alvino was on the mound for the last out of the game.

This will take a while. Grant Hogue was 4x5 with 2RBI, while Johnathan Villar (2B, HR, RBI), Jose Altuve (now hitting .403), Jonathan Meyer (2B, HR, RBI), and Ben Heath (2B) all had three hits each. Yorman Bazardo threw 3.1IP, 4H/3ER, 3K:1BB, and Brad Thompson allowed 2H in a scoreless 8th. Fresh off his rehab assignment in the GCL, Collin DeLome was 0x5 with 4Ks. Luis Maza, Brian Bogusevic, and Ramon Vazquez had two hits each, with Bogusevic hitting his 9th homer of the year - a two-run shot.

Tulsa enjoyed a three-run first inning, which pretty much wrapped it up for a 6-2 win over the Hooks. Tyler Lumsden went 2IP, 5H/3ER, 1K:4BB (2WP). Matt Nevarez threw two scoreless innings, allowing just a walk, while Erik Stiller matched Lumsden with 2IP, 5H/3ER, and 2HR allowed. Erick Abreu struck out five in 2IP. Jhon Florentino had two of the Hooks' four hits - both of them solo homers. Marcos Cabral and Michael Affronti each added a hit. Shuck got an outfield assist, getting Davis at 3rd from CF.

Since being converted from SS to reliever, De Leon has yet to allow a run (3H/3BB) in 5.1IP. Enrique Hernandez was 3x5, Adam Bailey was 2x4 for your multi-hit games. Just reading this will make you an accessory to murder. Bristol got a 12-run 3rd inning on their way to a 21-0 win over Greeneville. Ricardo Batista allowed 7H/9R (5ER), 1K:2BB in 2IP. Jamaine Cotton allowed 3H/5R (0ER), 2K:1BB in 1IP. B.J. Hagen allowed 5H/3ER in 2IP, and Justin Harper allowed 4H/4ER in 3IP, with 5K:1BB. Springfield threatened, but ultimately fell short in a game that saw the trading of 6-run innings. Here are your lead changes: 1-0 Springfield, 4-1 Corpus, 7-5 Springfield, 12-8 Corpus, and Corpus holds on for a 12-11 win. Doug Arguello threw 4.2IP, 11H/6ER (8R), 1K:2BB in an effort that saw his ERA rise to 3.07. Erik Stiller threw two scoreless innings, while Brian Wabick and Matt Nevarez gave up three late runs that cut the lead to 12-11 while Henry Villar struck out the side for his 4th save. The Express and Omaha Royals are apparently so similar that they can't get anything solved in nine innings. So it went last night when the Royals beat the Express 5-4 in 11 innings. Polin Trinidad threw 5.2IP, 3H/2ER, 5K:3BB and Jonah Bayliss gave up 2ER in 0.1IP. Roy Corcoran fell to 0-4, allowing the game-winning run after throwing 3IP. Sam Gervacio threw a perfect inning in his second rehab appearance. The Express were 0x10 w/RISP, and Collin DeLome was your only source of multiple hits, Jason Castro was 0x3 with 2BB and an RBI (and is now hitting .216), and Matt Kata collected an RBI double.

At least Lexington got a game in, though it almost didn't go the way they wanted. After opening a 9-2 lead after three, the Legends had to score three in the bottom of the 7th to provide some breathing room in a 12-8 win over Asheville. Jose Cisnero threw 5IP, 6H/4ER (5R), 3K:2BB, and Nathan Pettus gave up four hits and a walk for three earned runs in the 6th inning (and part of the 7th). Mike Schurz allowed a hit, three walks, and two wild pitches, but didn't give up any runs. Jose Altuve was 3x4 with a triple and 2RBI, while Jiovanni Mier also provided 2RBI. J.D. Martinez was 2x5, and Jonathan Meyer was 1x3 with 3RBI, extending his hitting streak to 14 games.
