GCL Astros: Jose Monzon
Jose Monzon
How did he get here?: Free agent, 2008
Stats: 6'0" 170 lbs, Bats: Right. Throws: Right
Age as of April 1, 2011: 19
Position: CF
2010 Overview
Career (before 2010)
What happened?
Monzon spent his first professional season in the Dominican Summer League, generally faring poorly, and posting a .586 OPS in 50 games. Coming to the States, he played in fewer games (35, as opposed to 50 in 2009), but saw his OPS increase by 119 points - no small jump.
In 2009, Monzon also stole 14 of 18 bases (77.8%). That dropped sharply in 2010 (9 of 14 - 64.3%). He spent all of his time in the field out in CF, committing three errors, and getting two outfield assists.
What went right?
July and the beginning of August. Monzon opened the season 2x26, and when you're only talking about 146 PAs, that's going to hurt the old average. He hit .272/.352/.395 in July, and was hitting .381/.458/.476 in six games in August before playing his last game on August 7.
He was the Astros GCLer of the Month in July.
What went wrong?
We don't exactly know what happened to Monzon, and why he stopped playing on August 7. There's nothing in the August transactions page to indicate that he was released, injured, or placed on the temporarily inactive list.
Monzon hit far better at home than he did on the road. Home: .279/.380/.443. Away: .224/.297/.299. That's the difference in 227 OPS points.
Given his age, I imagine Monzon will be in Greeneville next year, especially after how strong he came on after getting those first brutal 26 ABs out of the way.

Eddie's Farm: July 27
Round Rock
Every time Round Rock and Oklahoma City play, there's at least one article in the Oklahoma City paper that talks about "the fortunes" of each franchise's farm system, where Oklahoma City starts getting uppity about how great the Rangers are (and passive-aggressive about not wanting to be an Astros affiliate). It kind of pisses me off. And it pisses me off even more when Oklahoma City scores four runs in the 7th to win 5-3. Andy Van Hekken threw 6.1IP, 5H/3ER, 3K:3BB, and Gary Majewski can take credit for two of those runs, plus two of his own, allowing 3H in 0.2IP. Casey Daigle threw a scoreless 8th. The Express only got six hits - spread out among six players. Brian Bogusevic was 1x3 with a double and a walk, Tommy Everidge hit a two-run double. Matt Kata got the other RBI with a hit and a walk.
Man of the Match: Going with Andy Van Hekken here.
Corpus
The Hooks out-hit San Antonio 8-5, but were 0x10 w/RISP and lost 2-1. Erick Abreu threw 5IP, 3H/1ER, 5K:3BB in a rare start (that's his 3rd GS in 21 appearances). Arcenio Leon threw 2IP, 2H/1ER, 1K:2BB, and Edwin Walker threw a scoreless 8th. J.D. Martinez was 3x4 with a double and a stolen base, and Jon Gaston was 2x4 with a stolen base. In our daily Vallejo Watch, Jose Vallejo was 0x3 and is now hitting .118. He has two hits in his last 29 ABs.
Man of the Match: J.D. Martinez
Lancaster
Lancaster was down 1-0 in the middle of the 3rd, responded with two runs, and didn't trail again on their way to a 9-3 win over Visalia. Ross Seaton threw well: 7IP, 6H/3R (2ER), 1K:2BB, allowing two solo homers. He's gone 7+ IP in three of his last four starts. Brian Wabick walked two in 2IP. Brandon Barnes was 3x4, while Lee Cruz (2-run homer), and Federico Hernandez (2RBI) had two hits each. Brian Pellegrini also pitched in with 2RBI and Albert Cartwright added another. Jay Austin stole his 41st base of the year.
Man of the Match: Ross Seaton.
Lexington
Savannah put up four runs in the top of the 1st, but Lexington scored nine runs in the following three innings to kick off a 13-6 win. Jose Cisnero threw 3IP, 7H/5R (1ER), 2K:2BB, WP. Mike Schurz got the win with 3IP, 2H/1ER; Brad Dydalewicz, who is now apparently coming out of the bullpen, struck out three in two perfect innings, and Wander Alvino closed it out. Jake Goebbert hit a three-run homer in the third in a 2x4 night, while Kody Hinze was 2x4, with 3RBI and 2BB. Jonathan Meyer also had two hits and 3RBI. Jose Altuve, Jiovanni Mier, and Grant Hogue added two hits each. Brian Kemp was 1x3, with 2SB, 2BB, and three runs scored.
Man of the Match: Pick just one? Jake Goebbert.
Tri-City
Off.
Greeneville
Greeneville took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the 8th, but managed to allow a run in the 8th (homer), 9th (double), and the walk-off in the 10th (double). Ruben Alaniz dominated: 5IP, 1H/0ER, 10K:1BB. Travis Smink threw 1.2 perfect IP, Jeiler Castillo allowed 1H/1ER, 2K:1BB in 1IP, and Brian Streilein allowed 5H/2ER, 3K:1BB in 1.2IP, getting the loss. Pedro Feliz and Chris Wallace had three hits each (Wallace had a double and a walk - hitting .352 on the year, and .375/.444/.500 in his last ten), and Bryce Lane was 2x3 with a double, walk, and RBI.
Man of the Match: Ruben Alaniz
GCL Astros
The GCL Astros never trailed in this game, defeating the GCL Marlins 4-2. Jose Perdomo threw 6IP, 5H/1ER, 7K:1BB for the win (37K:9BB on the season), Nathan Pettus allowed 1H/1R (0ER), 1K in 2IP, and B.J. Hagen threw 1IP, 1H/0ER, 2K:1BB. Jose Monzon was 3x4 with a double and a stolen base, while Chris Shelton was 1x4, RBI, continuing his rehab, and Roberto Pena added 2RBI.
