In Review: Tri-City ValleyCats

And now we get to turn our attention to the NYPL Champion Tri-City ValleyCats.

The ValleyCats finished the regular season 38-36, a half-game better than the Connecticut Tigers to win the NYP-Stedler Division.

Home: 19-17
Away: 19-19

Of course, the ValleyCats defeated the Batavia Muckdogs in the 1st Round of the NYPL playoffs, and defeated the Brooklyn Cyclones - who had the best record in the NYPL - in two games for the Championship.

The average age of the ValleyCats' batters was 21.5, just a touch over the NYPL average (21.1). The pitching staff's average age was the same (21.5), while the NYPL pitchers' average was 21.3.

Runs: 340 (7th out of 14), 4.59 per game
Doubles: 115 (11th)
Triples: 16 (12th)
Homers: 50 (2nd)
Stolen Bases: 73 (7th) - 26 caught stealing - 73.4% SB rate
Strikeouts: 542 (4th-fewest)
Walks: 258 (7th)

Batting Average: .244 (8th)
OBP: .321 (8th)
SLG: .361 (6th)
OPS: .681 (7th)

Runs allowed/game: 4.05 (2nd)
ERA: 3.43 (3rd)
WHIP: 1.30 (5th)
Strikeouts: 604 (4th)
Walks: 208 (2nd-fewest) - 2.90 K:BB ratio
Wild Pitches: 51 (7th)

Fielding Errors: 80 (3rd)
Fielding Percentage: .973 (2nd)
Passed Balls: 21 (T-4th)
Bases Stolen Against: 68 (9th)
Caught Stealing: 33 (5th)
Caught Stealing %: 33% (T-6th)

Team Leaders:
Runs: Ben Orloff (52)
Hits: Ben Orloff (73)
Doubles: Enrique Hernandez (18)
Triples: Dan Adamson (4)
Homers: Dan Adamson (9)
RBI: Mike Kvasnicka (36)
Total Bases: Dan Adamson (112)
Strikeouts (most): Dan Adamson (79)
Walks: Tyler Burnett (45)
Stolen Bases: Ben Orloff (23)

Avg (100 AB minimum): Ben Orloff (.307)
OBP: Ben Orloff (.405)
SLG: Ben Heath (.457)

IP: Carlos Quevedo (85.1)
Wins: Carlos Quevedo (7)
Losses: Bobby Doran and Jake Buchanan (5)
ERA (20IP min.): Jorge De Leon (0.64)*
WHIP (20IP min.): Carlos Quevedo (0.98)
Strikeouts: David Martinez (57)
Walks (by starter): Carlos Quevedo (8 walks, 85.1IP)

*We should note that Tommy Shirley made five starts, pitching 17IP, and did not allow a run. That's solid.

Offensive Employee of the Year: This one was difficult, because while Ben Heath and Dan Adamson put up big numbers, Ben Orloff - in a repeat NYPL performance - was a pretty great lead-off man. Getting on base at a .405 clip, he did his best Ichiro impression, mainly getting on with singles (69 of his 73 hits were for singles), but he also stole 23 bases, getting thrown out just five times, for an 82.1% success rate. Ben Orloff is your Astros County Offensive Employee of the Year.

Pitcher of the Year: Carlos Quevedo. There were a few possibilities here, but Quevedo is our choice for Astros County's Pitching Employee of the Year. His WHIP was under 1.00. There were only two pitchers in the top 40 - ordered by IP - who walked fewer than ten batters all season long. The other? Tri-City's Bobby Doran. Williamsport's Eric Pettis walked seven batters, but in 26 fewer IPs. Win.

And now for some reaction to the ValleyCats' championship

Manager Jim Pankovits:
“I’m speechless right now. I can’t say enough about this pitching staff. They all rose to the occasion. It’s just a phenomenal feeling right now. This is what it’s all about...

...“I was sweating. No doubt about it. That’s an unbelievable ballclub over there. We earned it.”

Carlos Quevedo:
“I never gave up. This is the best game of my life and my career.”

Enrique Hernandez:
"This is the greatest; awesome."

Ben Orloff:
"This is awesome. Can't ask for better. Any individual award you may win doesn't compare with a championship...I don't think we were picturing this right here. Amazing!"

Brooklyn manager Wally Backman:
“My guys were overwhelmed — and we didn’t look prepared. Like we were improvising out there. So, yeah, I’m pissed. But they’ve got to learn this [losing] feeling themselves...

...“I would have liked to see more ‘rah-rah-rah’ out the guys, more standing on the top step than sitting on the bench. The bottom line is that we were outpitched.”

Recap: NYPL Championship - G1

Tri-City is one win away from the NYPL Championship after their 5-2 win over Brooklyn at The Joe last night.

David Martinez got the start for the ValleyCats, throwing 5IP, 3H/2ER, 3K:3BB. He allowed both runs in the top of the first, after Cory Vaughn homered to right-center, scoring J.B. Brown. And then he calmed down, getting the next six batter before walking Brown and Vaughn in the third. But it was the top of the 4th before he allowed another hit.

In the bottom of the 3rd, Ben Orloff drew a leadoff walk, Austin Wates doubled him in, Adam Bailey singled to right, scoring Wates. Chris Wallace drew a walk, and scored on Brown's error. Dan Adamson got an RBI groundout to finish off the four-run 3rd inning that essentially ended the game.

Brooklyn threatened in the 4th: William Cherry got a leadoff single, and Juan Centeno walked. With one out, Cherry was caught stealing third base, and James Schroeder struck out to end the inning.

Marcus Nidiffer hit a two-out solo homer in the 6th to put the game away, 5-2.

Jason Chowning struck out three in 2IP of work, and Jorge DeLeon was perfect in the final 2IP.

Game Two is tonight at 5pm Eastern in Brooklyn's (beautiful) KeySpan Park.

The ValleyCats' reaction to the playoffs

The Albany Times-Union has some nice reaction from the ValleyCats regarding their playoff berth.

Marcus Nidiffer:
"We caught wind in the dugout. All the coaches started smiling and everyone was shaking hands. That's when we knew."

Manager Jim Pankovits:
"I was coaching in the third-ase box. I looked over and everyone had grins on their faces and were shaking hands and patting each other on the back. I knew what was up."

Ben Orloff:
"It's been tough for us. To come back from 10 games out or so, it's great. Everybody wants a chance to win a championship at the beginning of the season and that's where we're at right now."

Writer Bryan Fitzgerald:
Just six weeks ago, a playoff berth was a nothing more than a pipe dream for Tri-City. The ValleyCats were 9.5 games out of first on July 19th, but went on the finish the regular season with a record of 27-15 over their last 42 games.

Those 27 wins are as many as the ValleyCats have had in two out of their last three seasons. They finished in the cellar of the Stedler Division each of the past three seasons, winning just 27 games in 2007 and 2009 and 28 in 2008.

Pankovits:
"These last two or three weeks, every game has been a gut-wrencher. These kids have responded unbelievably."

Orloff spent 22 of his 26 games in the field at 2B, where he posted a .959 Fld% (3 errors in 74 chances).

I'm guessing this wasn't the start that Orloff had in mind. That said, he doesn't strikeout much, so the contact ought to improve as he adjusts to pro-ball. He didn't strikeout at UC-Irvine either (67Ks in 877ABs - or 7.6%, because the math is free), and he didn't hit below .324 in his sophomore through senior seasons. So don't fret over the .446 OPS. Unless it happens again, and then we can fret.
