All sorts of roster moves

So another day, another injury as Rule 5 pick Josh Fields goes on the DL with a right forearm strain. Here's how the dominoes fall...

*Paul Clemens has been called up from Oklahoma City, and will be in uniform tonight in Seattle.

*Ross Seaton has gone from Corpus to Oklahoma City, and Carlos Quevedo is in Corpus from Lancaster.

Clemens came to the organization in the Michael Bourn trade, and will be the 2nd of that group of four players to wear an Astros uni (the immortal Jordan Schafer being the 1st). In 2012, he was an overall 11-10 with a 5.78 ERA/1.60 WHIP, with most of the damage coming at Oklahoma City (8-8, but with a 6.73 ERA/1.74 WHIP - 145 hits and 32 walks in 101.2IP).

Fields' injury seems to be more precautionary than anything horrific (Two Full Weilands on the Scale of Arm Injuries).

So why Clemens and not, say, Jordan Lyles? Luhnow is the aforelinked...um, link that Clemens' ability to come out of the bullpen played a role (Clemens fared well out of the bullpen in Spring Training).

UPDATE: As mentioned in the comments, I am stupid. Juan Abreu already debuted for the Astros in addition to Schafer. So Brett Oberholtzer is the only player in that trade to not make it to Houston yet.

Wednesday, March 13, 2013

The Second Cut is also the deepest

The Astros have optioned four pitchers: Jose Cisnero, Jarred Cosart, Brett Oberholtzer, and Ross Seaton to minor-league camp, and the roster is currently at 49.

Again, no real surprises. While we've heard for some time that Cosart will not be in the bullpen and will develop as a starter to begin the year, this is confirmation that the Astros are sticking with that plan. Later we'll take a look at the Bubble Players fighting for those 25 spots.

Tuesday, November 20, 2012

40-Man Roster set squarely at 36

Okay, the Astros have protected all the players they are going to protect for the upcoming Rule 5 draft. And the players added to the 40-Man roster are:

Jose Cisnero, Jarred Cosart, Robbie Grossman, Chia-Jen Lo, Brett Oberholtzer, Ross Seaton and Jonathan Villar.

We also find that the Astros lost reliever Mickey Storey to the Yankees in a waiver claim, and Scott Moore has been outrighted off the 40-Man Roster - he can elect free agency, or accept the assignment to Oklahoma City.

The 40-Man Roster now stands at 36 players, giving the Astros some flexibility as they explore trades and the Rule 5 draft. McTaggart has some reaction from those added to the 40-Man, as well as Jeff Luhnow. Moore, for one, isn't happy:
"I'm a little bit surprised by the decision, and I'm not sure if I would come back yet."

Among the surprises who were not protected were Marc Krauss, Josh Zeid, and Jason Stoffel. Luhnow says:
"We're at the point now as an organization (where) we are starting to build some depth, so you are risking losing some guys..."

The Chron's Brian Smith says the Astros have several players drawing interest from other clubs and while talks continue, nothing is imminent. He also added that the Astros aren't likely to lock up any arbitration players with long-term deals, preferring the financial flexibility that comes with going year-to-year. So, sorry Jed Lowrie, Wesley Wright, and Bud Norris.

Corpus sets the front of their rotation

Greg Rajan tweeted that Jarred Cosart, Ross Seaton, and Jose Cisnero will be the first three starting pitchers for the Hooks.

Presumably, Jake Buchanan and Brett Oberholtzer will round out the Corpus rotation, but at least the first three are set.

Update: That's exactly who it will be.

Seaton looking for consistency

Stephen Goff interviewed Ross Seaton, and found that he was looking for more consistency:

"What I want to do is start getting results. I'm showing positive glimpses by having good games, and then I'll have a few bad ones. It's time to get more consistent, instead of stringing two or three good starts together, and then having a bad one. Becoming more consistent is my big goal."

Good interview, worth your time.

Seaton to Corpus Christi?

Stephen Goff has an interview with Bobby Heck regarding Ross Seaton.

Heck:
"I expect him to be in Corpus Christi this year. He's only 21-years-old. If he had gone to college, he would be entering the Draft this year. To be pitching at the Double-A level at 21 is really good. I think he's had some setbacks. A lot of it has been him answering the bell on some things and making adjustments to his game. I think we're satisfied with the path he has taken."
