Felix Francisco - Special Assistant to the GM in Latin American Operations - talked to Brian McTaggart about international acquisition, 16-year old shortstop Luis Reynoso:
"Reynoso is a guy that we really like. We really felt strongly he's the best shortstop in Latin America that is going to stay at shortstop. Some of the other guys we really liked, we felt like they would move to third or second in the future. Reynoso can hit, and he's the best runner in the whole group."

Nice piece on Jose Carlos Thompson
Want to know more about Cuban-born Jose Carlos Thompson? So did the Astros.
Wade, on Manager of Latin American Operations Felix Francisco:
"Felix talked about the plus bat speed, and we've seen that. Felix saw him at shortstop and thought he profiled more as a second baseman. He's shown good hands and pretty good range and seems to run pretty well. It's all short snippets. It's all pretty much drills we're looking at. We've liked what we've seen so far, and it certainly looks like he'll go to the other side [Minor League camp], and we'll pay a lot of attention to him going forward."

Astros sign international LHP
Ben Badler of Baseball America is reporting the Astros have signed 6'1" 170 lb 16-year old LHP Geronimo Franzua for $250,000.
DPL Baseball says of Franzua:
He comes from a 3/4 arm angle, clean arm swing and does it easy. He hides the ball well in his delivery making his 88-90 mph FB jump on hitters. On ocassion he has touched 92 mph as well as showing a feel for CB and CH. Franzua was considered one of the top available LH pitchers in the D.P.L.
Franzua is the 4th Dominican Prospect League player the Astros have signed in the last six months, joining Kelvin Vizcaino, Michael Feliz, and Ariel Ovando.

International Signing Time!
Baseball America's Ben Badler is reporting that the Astros have signed 16-year old Dominican outfielder Ariel Ovando for reportedly between $2.6 and $2.8 million.
Bobby Heck:
"This is a high-caliber talent who we think has a chance to be an impact bat and would be a definite first-rounder in any draft...We think there's hit skill here more than just raw bat speed and a high ceiling for power, too. We think he has damage to do both as a hitter and with power."
Badler:
Ovando will begin his career in right field, but the biggest draw for most scouts is his outstanding physical frame at 6-foot-4, 180 pounds, and lefthanded power.

From Astros.com:
Ovando, who will be 17 on September 15, has signed a minor league contract for 2011. This season, he is expected to first report to the Astros Latin American complex in Boca Chica, DR, in the upcoming days and then is scheduled to participate in the Florida Instructional League in Kissimmee, FL in September.
Wade:
"We're extremely excited to get Ariel into the Astros organization. (Special Assistant to the GM) Felix (Francisco) did a lot of work on this kid and we also were able to have some of our other evaluators scout him over the past several months. Ariel profiles as a middle of the order power hitter with excellent defensive skills. He profiles as a front line major league right fielder and should move quickly through the minor league system."
Francisco:
Darryl Strawberry type body. Large frame. Long arms and legs with a lot of room to fill out. Everyday right fielder with the ability to hit for average and power. Ball carries off bat. Will be an above average right fielder with an average to above-average arm. Smart kid who has a clear goal in life and is dedicated.
