Tranzactionz!

The Astros made some moves over the last couple of weeks, according to Baseball America. Here are the ones that involve new information:

-Signed LHP Xavier Cedeno

Xavier Cedeno will be 25 in August, and has spent his entire career in the Rockies' system (drafted in the 31st Round of the 2004 draft). Cedeno didn't play in 2010, after being moved to the bullpen in 2009. In 47 appearances at Double-A, Cedeno has thrown 149.2IP, 172H/72ER, 77K:59BB, with a 4.56 ERA/1.54 WHIP.

This winter, he's playing in the Puerto Rican Winter League, has made seven starts (12 appearances), and posted 32H/11ER, 31K:13BB (2.32 ERA/1.05 WHIP) for Carolina.

-Released RHP Leandro Cespedes, LHP Chris Blazek, LHP Angel Gonzalez, C Carlos Mojica, 2B German Duran, 2B Pedro Feliz.

Cespedes spent the majority of 2010 in Lancaster. Chris Blazek was suspended for something in 2010 after his return to Tri-City after being drafted in 2005. The other notable name on the list is German Duran, who was picked off waivers by the Astros in July 2009 from the Rangers. Ken Rosenthal at the time thought that Duran could figure into a utility role for the Astros long-term. I guess not.

Eddie's Farm Employees of the Month: June

Another month has come and gone for Eddie's Farm. So who are the Employees of the Month?

Round Rock

Position Player: Drew Locke. Locke followed up a strong May with another strong month, earning the honor of the Eddie's Farm Employee of the Month. Locke was 32x101 (.317/.343/.525) with 14 extra-base hits.

Pitcher: His one brutal outing for the Astros notwithstanding, this goes to Josh Banks. He was 3-1 (7-2 since April), allowing 23H/8BB in 30IP for the Express in June, for a 1.50 ERA. Hitters managed a .219 line against him.

Honorable mention: Jonah Bayliss. In eight appearances (11IP) in June, Bayliss allowed 4H/1ER, 14K:0BB.

Corpus

Position Player: Jack Shuck. Hit .347/.426/.376 in 25 games in June with 13K:14BB.

Honorable Mention: German Duran. Hit .342/.398/.425, with 8K:8BB.

Pitcher: Jordan Lyles (though you could insert Doug Arguello in here, too). Allowed 29H/7ER in 30IP, with 33K:9BB, and was rewarded with a 1-2 record.

Lancaster

Position Player: Initially had a hard time giving it to a 27-year old in the California League, but Lee Cruz hit .400/.429/.650 in June, so that took care of that.

Pitcher: Wasn't even close. Dallas Keuchel was 3-0 with a 1.98 ERA in four starts, allowing 25H/6ER in 27.1IP, with 23K:6BB. Looking forward to seeing him in Corpus.

Lexington

Position Player: Our Boy Aaron Bray followed up an April in which his OPS was .440 with a May in which his OPS was .470. June, however, saw him post a .391/.451/.516 line, for a .966 OPS. J.D. Martinez posted a .994 OPS in June, but since Bray is Our Boy, and hit .391, he's our winner.

Pitcher: Zach Grimmett. In seven appearances (20IP), Grimmett allowed 12 hits and five walks for a 1.80 ERA.

We'll pick up with Tri-City, Greeneville, and the GCL Astros when they've had a chance to play more than 10 games.

Tranzactionz!

June 30

Carlos Mojica assigned to Lancaster from Tri-City.

Interesting, because Mojica hasn't played yet this season, and hasn't been above Greeneville yet. Although he is a catcher, and there's been a lot of shuffling at C this season.

June 29

German Duran assigned to Round Rock from Corpus.

It could be because of the All-Star Break for Corpus, because the Express already have Ramon Vazquez at 2B. Or it could be because something is about to happen.

Eddie's Farm: May 27

Round Rock

The Express scored four in the 6th and two in the 7th for a 7-4 win over Las Vegas. Sergio Perez threw 7IP, 11H/3ER, 3K:0BB for his first win of the season (in Round Rock), and Yorman Bazardo have up a solo homer. Jason Bourgois, Brian Bogusevic, and Drew Locke had two hits each, with Bourgeois getting 2RBI. Jason Castro was 1x3 and drew a walk to raise his average to .272 and his OBP to .426, and extend his 9-game hitting streak.

Man of the Match: Sergio Perez! Welcome to the discussion for 2011!

Corpus

German Duran hit two solo homers - the game-tyer (?) and the game-winner - for a 3-2 win over Springfield. Doug Arguello threw 7IP, 7H/2ER, 4K:4BB for his 6th win (ERA: 2.47), and Henry Villar closed it out with 3H/0ER, 2K:1BB in 2IP. German Duran was 2x4 with two solo homers - one in the 6th to make the game 2-2, and the game-winner in the 8th. Jon Gaston and Barry Butera added two hits each.

Man of the Match: German Duran

Lancaster

Hm. Lake Elsinore scored the first four runs of the game, and then six runs in the bottom of the 5th for a 12-4 win over Lancaster. Ross Seaton threw 4IP, 5H/4ER, 3K:2BB (2HR), while the bullpen of Schurz, Godfrey, Urckfitz, and Cespedes gave up 7H/8ER, 3K:4BB in 4IP (though Urckfitz had a perfect outing, so this isn't on him). Seaton is now 1-6 with a 5.54 ERA. Freddy Parejo (hitting .320), Brandon Barnes, and Brandon Wikoff had your two-hit games. Jay Austin was 1x5 with 3RBI and stole his second base of the year. Brandon Barnes was caught stealing and picked off, and Albert Cartwright made two fielding errors.

Man of the Match: Jay Austin

Lexington

The Legends got themselves a 4-run 2nd inning, good enough for a 5-3 win over West Virginia. David Duncan, enjoying a resurgence, threw 5IP, 3H/2ER, 1K:0BB outing to improve to 3-0 on the season. Luis Cruz struck out five in 3IP, and Kirk Clark struck out the side in the 9th to close it out. Jose Altuve was 2x5 with a 3-run homer, while J.D. Martinez and Andy Simunic had two hits each.

Man of the Match: Jose Altuve

Roster Cleaning

In order to prepare for the winter, the Astros have made some roster moves:

McTaggart:
Astros remove Chad Paronto, Billy Sadler and German Duran from the 40-man roster in general roster housekeeping.

UPDATE: Billy Sadler and Chad Paronto are now free agents, and Duran has been reassigned to Round Rock.

Transaction - and a link

July 16:
New signee German Duran was assigned to Corpus Christi after spending some Get To Know You starts with the GCL Astros. He had an error last night.

Also worth noting the link takes you to Zachary Levine's impressions of Corpus last night. Interesting things to point out, including a warning not to expect huge homer numbers out of Castro at Corpus...

He went from one of the best homer parks in all of affiliated ball to a yard where the wind blows out to left off the water, and you'd have to hit a third-deck-worthy shot just to reach the warning track. There were several balls that looked really well hit that settled right in the glove of a normally positioned right fielder.

Astros claim German Duran

Word from the Dallas Morning-News' Rangers blog that the Astros have claimed, just in the nick of time, 24-year old 2B German Duran.

The Rangers had hoped to sneak Duran through waivers, and almost did. He had only a few more hours to clear and stick with the organization. Instead, the Astros got him and will have to place him on the major-league disabled list as he recovers from an appendectomy.

Duran was a 6th round pick out of Weatherford College. In 2007, Duran hit .300/.352/.525, 32 doubles/22 homers, 77K:34BB - all in 480 at-bats. In 2008

Minor League Ball:
Duran projects as a solid hitter, a .260-.280 guy at the major league level. He won't draw a ton of walks, which will keep his OBP at mediocre/adequate levels. But he'll provide more pop than the average utility infielder: If someone gave him 500 at-bats he could hit 30 doubles and 15 homers. His versatility is also a plus. Duran isn't a future star, but he should have a long career as a really good bench guy who could be better than some players with regular jobs.

UPDATE: Ken Rosenthal gets in on the commentary:
Long-term, Duran could figure into the mix for the Astros at second and third base and in a utility role.
