Playoff Preview - G2: Corpus at Frisco

Tough loss for the Hooks last night, but they don't have much time to dwell on it - Game 2 is tonight at 7:00pm Central.

Corpus starter: Rob Rasmussen

Rasmussen came to the Astros in the Carlos Lee trade on July 4 (which we maintain was the greatest July 4 since 1776). In 11 appearances (10 starts), Rasmussen has posted a 4.80 ERA/1.40 WHIP, with 44K:18BB in 54.1IP (.319 BABIP). Of course, he did jump up a league, having pitched the first half in High-A Jupiter for the Marlins. FanGraphs puts his FIP at a 4.07.

Rasmussen's last outing came on September 2, throwing an inning of relief, allowing 2H/2ER, 2K:1BB, 1HR. He has faced Frisco three times (once on the road, on August 29), totaling 14.1IP, with 18H/12ER, 10K:4BB.

Frisco starter: Wilfredo Boscan

2012 has been Boscan's first full season at Frisco, getting five starts at the end of the 2011 season (6.95 ERA/1.73 WHIP in 22IP). But he's been much more solid in 2012 as a 22-year old - with 34 appearances, but starting the last nine games of the season.

Overall, Boscan is 7-5 with a 3.75 ERA/1.22 WHIP (.298 BABIP), with 89K:28BB in 98.1IP. He has not allowed more than two earned runs in any of his last five starts, and those starts, has thrown 29IP, 24H/7ER, 29K:5BB. His last outing came on August 31 against Corpus, at home, where he threw 6.1IP, 2H/1ER, 7K:2BB.

Note: Greg Rajan tweeted that Adam Bailey had to have an emergency appendectomy (because they're never really planned events), and Jonathan Villar has been activated to take his roster spot.

Jose Cisnero went 4 innings and allowed 4 R on 5 H and 3 BB with 5 K. Henry Villar pitched 1 scoreless inning followed by Alex Sogard with 2 scoreless. Josh Zeid was charged with 5 R on 4 H and 1 BB in just .1 innings. Erick Abreu allowed all three inherited runners to score before settling down for the final two outs.

Fans at Fluor Field were treated to an exciting game that was close the entire nine innings. Delino DeShields’ solo home run in the eighth inning and Jason Chowning’s slider combined to put the game away, as the Legends took the series with a 6-5 victory.

Jonas Dufek went 5.1 innings, giving up 5 R (4 earned) on 7 H and 3 BB with 3 K. Evan Grills battled through 1.2 innings, but held the Drive scoreless with 2 H and 1 BB. Jason Chowning slammed the door with 2 perfect innings and 4 K. The Drive had no chance against Chowning’s slider last night.

Despite Juan Abreu’s best efforts to give away the game, the RedHawks won 5-4 against Memphis.

Starter Dallas Keuchel pitched well in the win, going 6 IP allowing just 2H/0ER with 3K:0BB. He also induced an impressive 12 ground outs to just 3 fly outs. Brought in to close out the game with a 5-0 lead, after getting out of a bases loaded jam in the 8th, Abreu gave up 4 ER on 3 H including 2 HR with 1K:1BB in the 9th. As proof of what an important stat it is, Abreu got the save.

2B-Scott Moore was 2x3 with 2 R, 1 SB and 1 BB. 1B-Mike Hessman went 2x4 with 2 R.

The Hooks rode a big 4th inning to beat the Northwest Arkansas Naturals 7-2 to take the opening series.

Jose Cisnero avoided potentially self-inflicted damage for 4 shutout innings as he allowed just 1 hit but walked 4 with 3 K. Henry Villar followed with 3 innings giving up 2 hits and 1 run on a solo HR. Kevin Chapman, brought over from the Kansas City franchise in the Bourgeois/Quintero trade, gave one scoreless inning with 2 hits and 1 K. Josh Zeid pitched the final inning giving up 1 run on 2 hits with 1 K.

LF-Austin Wates continued his hot hitting, going 3x4 with 1R/1RBI and 1 BB. DH-Kody Hinze was 2x5 with 1 double and 1 run. 1B-Jonathan Singleton went 2x4 with 1 double and 1R/1RBI. 2B-Jose Martinez was 2x4 with 2 doubles and 1R/2RBI.

After losing the first 7 inning game of the day’s doubleheader 11-1, the Legends won the second 5-3.

In the first game, starter Tanner Bushue struggled mightily through 2.1 innings giving up 9 hits and 7 runs with 1K:1BB. Luis Cruz failed to stop the bleeding as he allowed 4 runs on 7 hits in just 2.2 innings while striking out 5. 1B-Brett Wallace was a force for the RedHawks, as he continued his hot hitting going 4x5 with 2 2B and 2R/3RBI. 2B-Oswaldo Navarro delivered the walkoff single as he went 1x5 on the night. Wallace is hitting .359/.465/.462 with 15BB:19K since his demotion, but has yet to hit a HR for OKC through 78 AB.

Adam was the 23^rd round pick in the 2010 draft out of the Univ. of Nebraska and 23 years old. He started the year at Lexington, where he hit .282/.329/.494 with 16 HR and 19BB:57K in 312 AB and was named a Sally League Mid-Season All-Star before being promoted to Lancaster. In his month with the JetHawks, Bailey hit .289/.316/.430 with another 5 HR and 5BB:23K in 128 AB. Since his promotion to Corpus, he’s hitting .326/.333/.500 with 1 HR and 1BB:7K in 46 AB. His combined line on the season is .288/.326/.477 with 22 HR and 25BB:86K in 486 AB across the three levels. Bailey also has an astounding 21 OF assists this season. He doesn’t strike out too much for a power hitter and if he can improve his BB rate I think he has a good chance of continuing his quick rise through the system.

Lancaster (48-81)

Lancaster gave up 9 runs in the 8^th inning to lose to the 66ers 14-6. Starter Robert Donovan went 7 IP allowing 8H/5ER with 2K:1BB. Then three pitchers failed to record a single out as 8 straight 66ers reached based to start the 8^th. Michael Ness gave up 2H/2ER, Colton Pitkin allowed 1H/1ER, and Kirk Clark gave up 2H/4ER with 2BB. All with 0 IP.

At the plate, CF-Austin Wates was 2x4 with 1R/1RBI as the DH. 3B-Jonathan Meyer went 1x3 with 1R/2RBI on a HR.

Lexington (54-74)

The Legends won 5-4 in 10 innings, their second extra inning game in as many nights. Tommy Shirley got the start but ended his scoreless innings streak, going 2 IP with 1H/3ER and 2K:4BB. Alex Sogard stepped up HUGE in relief, throwing 5 IP giving up 4H/1ER with an amazing 10K:1BB. Gabriel Garcia finished out the game with 3 IP only allowing 1BB/0H/0ER with 3K to get the win. Sogard, whose brother Eric recently hit his first ML HR as an IF for the A’s, has a 4.27 ERA with 103K:24BB in 97 IP for Lexington this season. His ERA may be inflated some by luck, as his FIP is currently 3.55.

RF-Domingo Santana continued his fireworks show, going 2x4 with 2R/2RBI and 1HR, his 4^th in 9 games with Lexington. 2B-Delino DeShields was 2x5 with 2R/1RBI and hit his 8^th HR of the season.

Tri-City (30-36)

The Valley Cats lost to Brooklyn by the familiar score of 7-4. Four of the last five games against Brooklyn have ended 7-4!

Starter Nick Tropeano went 4 IP allowing 3H/1R/0ER with 7K:2BB . Travis Blankenship took the loss, going 1 IP giving up 3H/4R/1ER with 1K:1BB. Tropeano, the 5^th round pick in this year’s draft, is 2-2 with a 2.61 ERA and 56K:19BB in 48.1 IP while only allowing 1 HR this season.

Off Game Spotlight: 3B-Kyle Redinger

Redinger, the 11^th round pick in the 2010 draft, has struggled in his second go-round in the GCL. He’s hitting just .151/.244/.202 through 135 plate appearances, with 10BB:42K. He did get 5 HBP, so that’s something. His defensive numbers are identical to last season, as he’s committed 10 errors in 102 chances.

After two poor seasons with the GCL Astros, I don’t see Redinger making an impact in our farm system.

OKC was all over Colorado, at one point scoring seven unanswered runs, for a 9-2 win. Lucas Harrell got the start, and didn't get ejected, or pulled before the 3rd inning, throwing 7IP, 11H/2ER, 5K:0BB (ERA: 2.67). Sam Gervacio and Xavier Cedeno each got three outs, with no hits, and 2Ks.

Brett Wallace continues his mastery of Triple-A with a 3x3, BB, 2RBI game. Jake Goebbert - called up ten days ago - was 2x4 with a double and an RBI. Drew Locke was 1x3 with 3RBI.

Game 1: Corpus loses to Arkansas, 4-2. Brett Oberholtzer took his first loss in the organization with 4IP, 2H/2ER, 6K:3BB. Arcenio Leon allowed 2H/2R (1ER), 0K:1BB, and Blake King allowed a walk in 1IP.

Emerson Frostad hit a solo homer, and added a single, to account for two of the Hooks' three runs. Kody Hinze had your other. David Flores provided the other RBI.

Albuquerque scored three in the bottom of the 9th, but couldn't get enough, and OKC wins 8-6. Game 1: Lexington got the 4-2 win off of Jameson Taillon. More importantly, Mike Foltynewicz got the first win of his career, throwing 5IP, with 1H/2R (1ER), 5K:4BB, WP/HBP. Jorge De Leon and Alex Sogard threw two hitless innings in relief.

Chris Wallace and Emilio King (SB, RBI) were each 2x3, with Tyler Burnett (SB) and Adam Bailey (HR) providing the other RBIs. All this despite the Legends going 1x12 w/RISP.

Game 2: And then West Virginia jumped out to a 9-0 lead, going on to a 9-3 win. Brian Streilein, who had been in the closer role, got the start, and it did not go well. Casey Fien blew the save opportunity, giving up a two-run homer in the 8th, with Gustavo Chacin allowing the game-winning homer in the 9th.
