Here's what you need to know while we try not to doze off at work from staying up until midnight last night celebrating (quietly) the win over Seattle.
*Jim Crane would like a resolution to CSN Houston within 30 days.
*Jimmy Traina interviewed new celebrity Delino DeShields about getting hit in the face last weekend. DeShields: "I do have a good sense of humor about it because it could be a lot worse and I'm not dead."
Also, DeShields is a bawse:
I have a football mindset. I'm gonna get in the box and it's still gonna
be a battle between me and whoever is throwing and you're still trying
to win. If anything, I'll have nerve because I'm excited to play again,
but as far as being scared, naw, that's not me. If I get hit in the face
again, so be it. I signed up, I'm committed to play this sport, there's
nothing in the contract or rules that say you aren't gonna get hit in
the face or be injured or anything like that, and I know that so I'm
just gonna go and continue and do what I love to do. Nothing will
change.
*The Crawfish Boxes says not to panic about the offensive woes.
*George Springer went to live with Seattle's Brad Miller this offseason because of Connecticut weather.
*Via What The Heck Bobby we find that Japhet Amador has been loaned back to Diablos Rojos.
*Lookout Landing says Mike Zunino's freaking moonshot last night may have been fair after all.
*John Sickels profiled Jon Singleton as his prospect of the day.
*Finally, slide on down and meet the newest writer for Astros County, the Masked Marvel.

All kinds of tranzactionz
Big goings on today in Astros camp as the regular season gets down-under way (get it?). As an aside, I had every intention of watching the season opener at 3am. I went to bed at a reasonable time, and the daughter woke up at 2:30. I got her taken care of, and put her back down at 2:45, sat on the couch ready to go and...fell asleep. Woke up at 7:00. Any of y'all watch?
Anyhow, let's run down everything that has happened in the last 15 hours.
*Peter Moylan tore his UCL, and is likely headed for another Tommy John surgery (he had a first in 2008).
*The Astros optioned lefty reliever Darin Downs to OKC and reassigned Gregorio Petit and Japhet Amador to minor-league camp. As Drellich noted, if the Astros are going to have a 2nd lefty out of the bullpen (assuming Kevin Chapman is the primary lefty), it's going to be Raul Valdez - who doesn't have any options left. It also looks likely that Jesus Guzman and Marc Krauss are going to make the team.
*The Astros released J.D. Martinez.

Martinez was supposed to have a relatively high salary for a Triple A player this year. Said might have spooked teams, but can negotiate now

This saddens me. Because for a couple of years it was really fun to do the minor-league recaps, as Martinez pretty much always hit. From 2009-11 Martinez never posted a minor-league OPS under .939. But it just didn't translate to the Majors. Martinez had a .742 OPS in his major-league debut, but declined to .685 in 2012 and .650 in 2013.Friday, February 28, 2014
Japhet Amador is a big guy
I have a picture from a few years ago of Tony Gwynn and yours truly. I love that picture, because I'm the "small guy" in the picture. Behold, Japhet Amador in all his Amadorness:

Japhet Amador could report by the end of the week
Interesting note out of Astros camp today in Kissimmee in which we find that Japhet Amador - whom we last met when Jeff Luhnow told errbody last Wednesday that the Astros were not expecting Amador in camp this spring at all - could report by Friday.
There were just vagaries used in describing why Amador wouldn't be in camp, but we find in today's note that Amador's pregnant wife was ill. Amador's agent, Oscar Suarez, said:
We're talking right now. We're just trying to figure it out.
Obviously it sounds serious. Hopefully Amador's wife and baby are both okay - I'm not sure what there is to figure out, but since it's not my situation I'll just hope that everybody does what's best for everybody.

Singleton to arrive Thursday
Within this Evan Drellich update we find that:
*Jon Singleton and Ronald Torreyes will be in camp by tomorrow.
Drellich sums it up:
Singleton’s absence is more notable than Torreyes’. Singleton is a touted power-hitting prospect who’s in the mix for a starting job, at first base. He’s someone who could have perhaps benefited from a tone-setting, positive impression that an early arrival may have created. The 22-year-old had a down season last year, emphasized by a suspension for marijuana, but he also had a great winter in Puerto Rico.
Still, today is the full squad report date. It's not just a formality. But his girlfriend assures everyone that everything is fine.
*Japhet Amador is "on indefinite leave for a medical emergency."

Astros proceeding without Amador
Jeff Luhnow held a press conference this morning,(which is basically, like, three guys) and the main topic of conversation was 1B candidate Japhet Amador.
According to basically everyone on Twitter, Amador is in Mexico for unspecified family reasons, and will not be reporting to Spring Training. Luhnow said:
He’s not going to be here, and we don’t know what the next steps are with him. For now, he needs to spend some time with his family, so he won’t be showing up here today. Other than that, we expect everybody else to be here...When things happen to your family, you tend not to think about next steps. We’re going to give him the time that he needs, but right now we’re proceeding as if he’s not going be here during Spring Training.
So obviously this is terrible, and we hope for nothing but the best for Japhet Amador and his family.
It also means that the 1B job got a little more interesting. A few short weeks ago the Astros had the following candidates to play first base:
Japhet Amador
Jesus Guzman
Marc Krauss
Jon Singleton
Brett Wallace
Well. Wallace was optioned off the 40-Man roster, and now Amador will not apparently be participating in Spring Training. So that leaves Guzman, Krauss, and Singleton (I'm proceeding as though Chris Carter will be the rotating DH, and get some time in LF and periodically at 1B).
Marc Krauss hit .209/.267/.366 in 52 games (146 PAs) for the Astros last year. Small sample size and all that, but he also only hit .111/.183/.185 with almost as many walks (5) as hits (6) at Minute Maid Park. He hit .275/.326/.488 on the road.
Jesus Guzman at least played in 126 games for San Diego last season (318 PAs) and hit .226/.297/.378 and seriously can somebody just get on base. He did seem to be hamstrung by Petco Park, though, hitting .164/.248/.209 at home, while hitting .279/.339/.526 on the road. All nine of Guzman's homers came away from Petco last season.
Everyone knows Singleton had a bad year, mainly due to the 50-game suspension, and didn't hit well during the season. But he regrouped in the Puerto Rican Winter League, hitting .268/.396/.537. But Singleton hasn't arrived at camp yet, which he should probably do fairly quickly, seeing as how today is the report date for all players.
Brett Wallace has a chance to earn the spot back, I guess, but first he'd have to earn a spot back on the 40-Man roster. Which means someone would have to earn a spot off of the 40-Man roster. Japhet Amador is not on the 40-Man, so today's news doesn't exactly open a door for Wallace - not that it really would, anyway, since it's not as though the 1B job was ever Amador's to lose.
Gonna be interesting to see how this plays out.

Pleskoff on Japhet Amador
Japhet Amador is my Spirit Animal. I love the very idea of a 6'4" 315lb first baseman. But what does he look like from a scouting perspective? Former Astros and Mariners scout Bernie Pleskoff has your answer.
I have nothing to add to this because (a) I'm not a scout and (b) have never pretended to be a scout. Hell, one of my goals for the 2014 season is to Not Automatically Hate Any Player Not On The Astros. So I'll be happy to just take Pleskoff's word for it here.

Amador vs. Singleton: Who Ya Got?
One of the writers from Baseball Prospectus was asked the following:
From the fall/winter leagues, it would seem that Amador is playing his way into the conversation for the opening day lineup while Singleton is not. Come April, which one makes the opening day roster, if any?
And if you click the link, you'll find the answer. Basically, Amador is going to get every chance to stick in Houston before Singleton, because:
a) Amador is 27. Singleton is 22.
b) Amador is who he is, might as well see what he's got at the Major-League level
c) Singleton struggled in 2013 after that 50-game suspension, so he could use the time Amador is given in Houston to refine his skillset.
Of course, the response is far more eloquent than that, but good points all around.
Update: OKC's radio man Alex Freeman has a post up on his blog regarding many things, but for our purposes here, let's look at his remarks on Singleton:
Everyone in the know is certain 2013 was an aberration for Singleton, and he’ll bounce back next year.

Japhet Amador to participate in AFL Hitting Challenge
The Astros' Japhet Amador will participate in the Arizona Fall League's Hitting Challenge on Saturday.
Hitters taking part in the event will receive two minutes to hit against live pitching and be rewarded for points between 100-500. Hitters also can earn points by hitting a wide array of targets on the field and their final swing will come off a tee and be worth double points.
Oversized trading cards, an outfielder on a trampoline and a moving human sphere will be among the targets.
I'm far more interested in what this Moving Human Sphere will be...and if it will be Japhet Amador.

Oklahoma City (79-59)
OKC trailed 1-0 until a three-run 4th put them on their way to a 5-4 win over Nashville, and a PCL American South Division title. Eric Berger got the spot start and allowed 2H/1ER, 4K:1BB in 5IP; Jose Cisnero (2ER) and Jason Stoffel (1ER) each struck out two before Wade LeBlanc and Jorge DeLeon got the final three outs of the season.
Japhet Amador was 3x4 and an RBI; George Springer (3B, BB, RBI) and Brandon Laird (RBI) had two hits each. Carlos Perez was 1x3 with a walk and an RBI. Congrats to the RedHawks on winning the division.
Man of the Match: Japhet Amador
Corpus (80-54)

Man of the Match: Rio Ruiz
Tri-City (41-26), 4.0 up
Long one in Brooklyn last night, eh? The Cyclones took a 2-0 lead after three innings, Tri-City responded with three in the top of the 4th. Brooklyn tied it up in the bottom of the 8th, and finally, in the 16th inning, Tri-City pushed two runs across for a 5-3 win in a game that took just shy of five hours. Michael Feliz allowed 6H/2ER, 8K:1BB in 5IP; Tyler Brunnemann struck out three in 2IP; J.D. Osborne got the BS, allowing 3H/1ER, 1K:3BB in 1.1IP; Charles Basford threw 3.2IP of 5K:3BB, no-hit relief; Krishawn Holley allowed 3H/0ER, 1K:2BB in 3IP to get his first win of the season, and Gonzalo Sanudo did what Gonzalo Sanudo does - struck out the side in a perfect 16th inning.
Ronnie Mitchell was 3x7 with a double and an RBI; James Ramsay (3B), Tyler White (HR, RBI) and Jon Kemmer (RBI) had two hits each. Jack Mayfield had a hit and a walk.
Man of the Match: Michael Feliz
Greeneville (38-27), 0.5 up
Tied 1-1 heading into the bottom of the 8th, Marc Wik came up with one out. He drew a walk. Then the pitcher balked him to 2nd. Then a wild pitch got him to 3rd. Then a single by Alfredo Gonzalez scored Wik for the game-winning run, Gastros win 2-1. Francis Ramirez allowed 2H/1R (0ER), 7K:2BB in 4.2IP; Sebastian Kessay (H, BB), Jose Montero, and Jordan Mills (H) held Bluefield scoreless over the final 4.1IP.
