Eddie's Farm: August 7

Round Rock

Look at that! Round Rock takes a 4-0 lead (three runs in the first) and rides it out for a 4-1 win. Shane Loux improved to 3-11 after 6IP, 4H/1ER, 3K:1BB. Chris Sampson (who is the Express' seventh-inning guy, apparently), Roy Corcoran, and Casey Daigle allowed 6H/0ER, 1K:0BB in 3IP of relief. Jack Shuck was 2x4 with a double and a triple, and Oswaldo Navarro was 2x4. Chris Shelton hit a three-run bomb in the 1st, and Brian Bogusevic provided the other RBI.

Man of the Match: Chris Shelton

Corpus

Corpus played a tight game until the 7th, when they broke out for five runs through the end of the game, beating Midland 7-1. Henry Villar threw 7IP, 5H/1ER, 2K:3BB, and Jared Wells (1H, 2BB) and Arcenio Leon (1BB) closed it out. Lots of hits for the Hooks last night, and each of the top four spots in the lineup had two hits each (Parejo - BB, 2RBI; Cartwright - 2RBI; Martinez; Clemens) as did Jimmy Van Ostrand (RBI) and Federico Hernandez. In his last ten games, J.D. Martinez has hit .387/.525/.548.

Man of the Match: All the offense, and Henry Villar

Lancaster

The JetHawks got seven in the 6th and thus won 7-3 over Lake Elsinore. Ross Seaton - the human yo-yo - allowed 4H/2ER, 3K:1BB in 7IP, with three groundouts and fifteen flyouts. Brian Wabick allowed 2H/1ER, 1K:3BB in 2IP. John Curtis continued his recent streak of domination, going 3x4 with two doubles and 2RBI. Andy Simunic was 2x4 with a double and an RBI. Brandon Barnes hit his 22nd homer - a three-run shot.

Man of the Match: John Curtis (11x15 in his last three games)

Lexington

Rough night for the bullpen, as Delmarva scored eight runs in innings 6-8, turning a 1-1 game into a 9-1 win. Jose Cisnero threw 6IP, 3H/3ER, 7K:1BB. Brad Dydalewicz allowed 2H/4R (1ER), 2K:1BB in 1IP, and Mike Schurz gave up 2H/2ER, 2K:1BB in 1IP. The Legends also only had three hits - Grant Hogue, Jimmy Paredes, and Jonathan Meyer, with Paredes and Jiovanni Mier drawing walks.

Man of the Match: Jimmy Paredes

Tri-City

Tri-City had a 1-0 lead, but State College edged out the ValleyCats 2-1. Jake Buchanan allowed both runs on 5H in 5.1IP; Alex Sogard threw 2.1IP, 2H/0ER, 3K:1BB. Murillo Gouvea struck out the final batter of the game. The ValleyCats only got four hits on the night - two from Oscar Figueroa and one from Adam Bailey, and a triple from Dan Adamson. Ben Orloff drew two walks.

Man of the Match: Ben Orloff (two walks + SB)

Greeneville

Greeneville was up 4-1 going into the bottom of the eight, and Princeton managed to send it into extra innings. Chris Wallace got the game-winner with an RBI single by Chris Wallace, scoring Jhonny Medrano - who led off the inning with a walk. Gastros win 5-4. Euris Quezada threw 7IP, 3H/1ER, 3K:3BB, Travis Smink gave up 2H/1ER without recording an out, leaving the bases loaded for Ryan Cole in the 8th, who got out of a bases-loaded, no-out jam before getting into his own trouble, and giving up the two runs in the 9th (aided by Brian Streilein). Streilein threw the final 4IP, giving up 1H/0ER, 4K:1BB. The Gastros were 3x18 w/RISP, but pounded out 15 hits. Hector Rodriguez was 3x5, and Pedro Feliz, Ryan Humphrey, Jhonny Medrano, Chris Wallace, and Emilio King had two hits each. Chris Wallace hit his 10th homer of the year, and added another RBI on a sac fly.

Man of the Match: Marcus Nidiffer.

Eddie's Farm: July 30

Round Rock

Oklahoma City scored three runs in the first, and then held the Express to three hits over the rest of the game for a 4-1 win. Polin Trinidad needed 110 pitches to get through 5IP, allowing 8H/4R (3ER), 3K:1BB, 2HBP. Chris Sampson, Jeff Fulchino, and Casey Daigle threw a scoreless inning each. As mentioned, nothing much going on with the offense - Shelton was 1x3 with a walk, and Kata and Duran had the other two hits. Edwin Maysonet provided the lone RBI.

Man of the Match: Uh. Chris Shelton?

Corpus Christi

Midland scored all their runs from the 6th inning on, but Corpus was able to withstand the charge for a 4-3 win. Jeremy Johnson threw 6IP, 3H/1ER, 4K:4BB, while Jared Wells (2IP, 1H/1R (0ER), 1K:1BB) and Evan Englebrook (1IP, 3H/1ER, 1K:1BB) closed out the game. Michael Affronti (3B), Jimmy Van Ostrand, and Jon Fixler (HR, 2RBI) had your multi-hit games, while Kody Kirkland was 1x2 with 2BB. David Cook provided the other RBI on a sac fly. Brett Wallace was not in the lineup.

Man of the Match: Jon Fixler

Lancaster

Despite collecting 12 hits, the JetHawks dropped 10-5 to Bakersfield. Pat Urckfitz threw 5IP, 8H/7R (6ER), 6K:2BB, 3WP with two of those runs coing courtesy of Jose Trinidad, who threw 2IP, 3H/1ER. Kyle Godfrey was as effective, allowing 2H/2ER in 2IP. Albert Cartwright is on a tear, with a 3x4 night, and Federico Hernandez was 3x4 with a triple and an RBI. Lee Cruz hit a two-run homer and added another RBI, and Brian Pellegrini was 2x3 with a walk.

Man of the Match: Albert Cartwright

Lexington

Nope. It's not a repeat, and I'm not punch-drunk with all these trade. Same score as the Lancaster game, Lexington loses 10-5, and Delmarva was up 9-1 at the end of the 3rd. Zach Grimmett took the brunt of it, allowing 9H/8ER, 2K:1BB in 2.1IP. His line wasn't helped by Colton Pitkin, who gave up three runs charged to Grimmett, but Pitkin threw 2.2IP, 6H/2R (1ER). Brad Dydalewicz gave up 3H/0ER, 2K:0BB in 3IP, and Dan Sarisky struck out two in the 9th. Jose Altuve was 2x5 with a solo homer, and Grant Hogue and Brian Kemp added two hits each. Jiovanni Mier was 0x5 with 4Ks.

Man of the Match: Jose Altuve

Tri-City

Drama! Daniel Adamson hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 11th for a walk-off 7-6 win over Lowell. Andrew Robinson threw 3.1IP, 3H/3R (1ER), Jason Chowning allowed 5H/2ER, 5K:0BB in 2.2IP, Murillo Gouvea threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts, Jorge De Leon allowed an unearned run in 2IP (tying up the game), and Brandt Walker got the win. The unearned runs came courtesy of errors by Andrew Robinson, Mike Kvasnicka, and Oscar Figueroa. Tyler Burnett was 3x5, while Buck Afenir and Adamson had two hits and an RBI each. Adam Bailey only got one hit - but it was a grand slam in the 7th, and he added another RBI.

Man of the Match: Adam Bailey.

Greeneville

Bristol scored four in the 7th to take a 4-2 lead over Greeneville, but the Gastros answered with three in the bottom half for a 5-4 win. Mike Foltynewicz threw 4IP, 4H/0ER, 4K:1BB, while Garrett Bullock threw 1.1IP, 3H/0ER. Brian Streilein had the rough night, giving up 3H/4R (3ER) in 1IP, with Phil Rorabaugh getting the win with 1.2IP, 2H/0ER (and scoring one of Streilein's inherited runners). Ryan Cole got his 2nd save of the year. Jonathan Merritt was 2x4 with a solo homer, and Ryan Humphrey was 2x3 with a triple and 2RBI. Telvin Nash hit a solo homer, as well.

Man of the Match: Ryan Humphrey

Eddie's Farm: May 13

Round Rock

Wesley Wright extended his record to 2-0 as the Express beat the Bees, 5-4, and that's five wins in their last six games. Wright threw 5.1IP, 5H/3ER, 4K:5BB in kind of a sloppy game. Gervacio gave up the 4th Salt Lake run, while Evan Englebrook and Casey Daigle threw two scoreless IP. Chris Shelton and Drew Meyer each had three hits - with Shelton hitting a 2-run homer. Matt Kata and Jason Castro had your other multi-hit games, both going 2x4. In his last six games, Castro is hitting .391 (9x23).

Man of the Match: Chris Shelton

Corpus

The Hooks jumped all over Frisco for a 10-3 win. Jordan Lyles went 7IP, 6H/1ER, 6K:2BB for his third win of the season, while Henry Villar allowed to 2ER to blow up his ERA to 1.37. The Hooks were 8x17 w/RISP, and Shuck led the way with a 3x6 day (a homer short of the cycle) and 4RBI, while Duran, Gaston, Florentino, and Sutil each had two hits. Towles was 0x3, but with two walks, and Clemens was the only Hook to not get on base.

Man of the Match: Jack Shuck

Lancaster

Rancho Cucamonga owns Lancaster. The JetHawks were swept to drop their record to 3-8 against the Quakes with a 5-4 loss. Brad Dydalewicz gave up 8H/4ER, 1K:4BB in 5IP, but Ashton Mowdy took the loss by allowing the Quakes' 5th run in the 8th. Dydalewicz ERA currently sits at 10.72, and in his six starts for the JetHawks, he hasn't made it into the sixth, and allowed fewer than four ER just twice. His K:BB ratio is currently 13:16. Josh Flores was 2x4 with 2RBI, while Brandon Wikoff and Brandon Barnes got on base twice.

Man of the Match: Josh Flores

Lexington

Kody Hinze hit a two-run shot in the 10th to give the Legends a 7-5 win over Asheville. Juan Minaya threw 5IP, 6H/4ER, 1K:3BB, while Arcenio Leon (2IP, 5K), Jose Trinidad (2IP, 1BB), and Kirk Clark (1IP, 0H/0BB) held it down. Jiovanni Mier was 2x5 with 2RBI, while Hinze's homer was his second hit of the game.

Man of the Match: Kody Hinze

Eddie's Farm: May 4

Round Rock

Josh Banks threw a good one, and the Express won 6-2, to move to 9-16. Banks went 6.2IP, 6H/1ER, 1K:3BB. Yorman Bazardo allowed 4H/1ER in 1IP of relief, while Roy Corcoran closed it out with a scoreless 9th. Edwin Maysonet was 3x3 with a walk, and Chris Shelton and Drew Meyer were each 2x4, with Shelton hitting a two-run homer. Collin DeLome also had a two-run double. Jason Castro was 0x4 with 2Ks, and is hitting .221 on the season.

Man of the Match: Chris Shelton

Corpus Christi

The Hooks were 2x12 w/RISP, and thus lost at Midland 4-2 to put them at 11-14, three games back of the Midland team that beat them, and have lost seven of their last ten games. Sergio Perez threw 6.2IP, 7H/4ER, 3K:1BB, and Nelson Payano closed out the last four outs, striking out three. Hooks batters had nine hits, two each from Steele, Duran, and Van Ostrand, but only got RBIs from Steele and Marcos Cabral.

Man of the Match: Jimmy Van Ostrand - 2x3 with a double and a walk.

Lancaster

The JetHawks got a 5-run inning in the 4th and Shane Wolf threw 7IP, 7H/1ER, 2K:0BB for an 8-1 win over High Desert, and are now 8-16. Ashton Mowdy and Brian Wabick had two scoreless innings in relief. The offense was 6x12 w/RISP, and Jay Austin was 3x5 with a homer and 2RBI. Albert Cartwright, Mark Ori, and Ebert Rosario each had two hits and 4RBI between them.

Man of the Match: Shane Wolf

Lexington

Kannapolis jumped all over Lexington for an 8-1 win over the Legends, who fell to 11-15. Brandt Walker threw 4.2IP, 4H/5R (4ER), 5K:3BB, and Colton Pitkin gave up 3R - 2ER - in 2.1IP of relief. Kirk Clark and Dan Sarisky held the Intimidators scoreless. The Legends were 1x12 w/RISP, and left eleven on base. Jose Altuve was 2x4 with a walk, Jake Goebbert was 0x2 with 2BB. J.D. Martinez was 1x4 with the run scored. Jiovanni Mier committed his 7th error of the season, and Jonathan Meyer's throwing error made for his 11th of the year.

Man of the Match: Jose Altuve

Astros announce their own Minor-League Employees of the Month

Totally stealing our idea, the Astros went and named their own minor leaguers of the month. Here's what those guys came up with, as if they have any idea...

Jason Bourgeois, Andy Van Hekken (Hey! Same as us!)

Defensive POM: Chris Shelton

Corpus Christi

Koby Clemens, Henry Villar (we gave it to Lyles, but admitted Villar was a strong candidate)

Defensive POM: Wladimir Sutil

Lancaster

Albert Cartwright, David Berner (Thieves!)

Defensive POM: Brandon Wikoff

Lexington

J.D. Martinez, Tanner Bushue (Scoundrels!)

Defensive POM: Jake Goebbert

Maybe we can agree on something with the Astros...

Eddie's Farm: May 1

Round Rock

The Express were down 6-1, and then scored 11 of the next 12 runs - including seven in innings 7-9 - for a 12-7 win over Albuquerque. Gustavo Chacin had a rough time of it, allowing 7H/6ER with three homers in 4IP. The bullpen of Wilton Lopez, Roy Corcoran, and Casey Daigle held the Isotopes to 5H/1ER, 5K:0BB in 5IP. Express hitters got six extra-base hits, and Bogusevic, Shelton, Kata were each 3x6 with 7RBI between them. Jason Castro was 2x4 with 2RBI.

Man of the Match: Chris Shelton

Corpus Christi

The Hooks jumped on Frisco early and the pitching staff held the Roughriders for a 5-2 win. Tyler Lumsden went 5IP, 6H/1ER, 3K:0BB, but exited after the 5th having thrown only 66 pitches (48 for strikes). Why, you may ask yourself - as I did? Because of the 6H he allowed, three of them came in the 5th. Payano, Wells, Villar, and Meszaros threw 4IP in relief, allowing 4H/1ER, 3K:3BB. Jack Shuck, Jhon Florentino, David Cook, Marcos Cabral, and Michael Garciaparra all had two hits each. Cook had two doubles, and T.J. Steele had 3RBI on the night.

Man of the Match: Hard to tell. How about T.J. Steele?

Lancaster

Hey-oh! It's a walkoff...it's a walkoff. JetHawks defeat Lake Elsinore 10-8 on a 10th-inning walkoff by Brandon Barnes. Dallas Keuchel threw 5IP, 7H/2ER (5 total), 6K:3BB, and Cespedes, Wabick, Urckfitz, and Berner threw 5IP in relief (though Urckfitz didn't record an out, walking the two batters he faced). Berner, after getting Employee of the Month honors, gets the blown save and the win, as the JetHawks allow the Storm to get one in the top of the 10th before Brandon Barnes saved the day with a three-run shot. Overall, the JetHawks got 22 hits - including five from Albert Cartwright, four from Mark Ori, and three from Barnes and Contreras. Catcher Jordan Comadena was 1x3 with a walk, but with two stolen bases.

Man of the Match: Brandon Barnes.

Lexington

It only took 2h16m, but Savannah beat the Legends 3-1 yesterday. Juan Minaya threw 6IP, 6H/2ER (3 total), 1K:3BB, and Mike Schurz struck out three in 2IP. The Legends only got five hits, two from Miguel Arrendell (Goebbert, Garcia, and Hogue getting the other three). Jonathan Meyer committed his 10th error of the season, but Mike Newman of Scouting The SAL said last night that Meyer was working out at second base before the game. This would be huge for him, and would clean up the left side of the infield.

Man of the Match: Juan Minaya.

Whose fault is this?

So we all know the agony and despair. And it's now officially time to start pointing fingers. So let's break down whose fault this is:

Not at fault

-Brad Mills
These are the same players who hit well, and won almost half their Spring Training games. Mills has to keep running Lee and Pence out there, because they're .280-.300 hitters who will eventually hit. This is in no way his fault (except for maybe continuing to play Blum at 1B). I will ask this, though (and it's building on a comment from yesterday): Why the hell isn't Chris Johnson playing more? Feliz can handle 1B, and if Johnson isn't getting any ABs in Houston, why isn't he down at Round Rock, learning some plate discipline and seeing game action?

-Brad Arnsberg
The pitching has been solid. The Astros have had four quality starts, and nothing to show for it. Myers threw his best game since 2008 last night, and got a loss. Oswalt is 0-2 with two quality starts. The pitching isn't the problem.

-Michael Bourn
Yes, Bourn has only drawn one walk, but he's hitting .379 (OBP = .400). Bourn has been on base 12 times this season, and has crossed home twice.

We're Looking At You

-Lee/Pence/Towles
It is inexcusable for three players to be at, or under, the .100 mark. It's almost harder to hit .100 than it is to hit .230.

-Sean Berry
I haven't seen a single quote or article about Sean Berry. Yes, I'm glad he's back. Yes, I'm glad he's doing well. I don't know how much impact a hitting coach can have, but it's obviously a team-wide issue. It's not as though everyone's hitting .300, and Pence just can't figure it out.

-Ed Wade
If Johnson isn't going to get any playing time, how's about bringing up Shelton to play 1B while Blum does what he was supposed to do, and plays every now and then for Pedro Feliz. Shelton is hitting .346/.419/.346 at Round Rock.

The Screw-gee

So the dreaded cuts came today for nine, and I'll agree with The Crawfish Boxes, some of them don't make sense.

Here are your nine:
RHP Wilton Lopez
RHP Casey Daigle
RHP Gary Majewski
RHP Gustavo Chacin

IF Drew Meyer
1B Chris Shelton
IF/OF Edwin Maysonet

C Jason Castro
C Kevin Cash

McTaggart notes that Majewski, Chacin, Meyer, Shelton, and Cash were reassigned to minor-league camp, but will stay with the Big Club through the end of Spring Training.

Lopez, Maysonet, Castro, and Daigle are reassigned to Minor League camp immediately.

So this likely means the following:
Towles will be your Opening Day catcher (though Footer notes that the Astros are saying it's between Towles and Quintero.)
Gervacio has his spot in the bullpen.
Cory Sullivan is your OF5.

I'm most surprised by Lopez, Maysonet, and Daigle's reassignment. Lopez didn't allow an earned run all Spring. Maysonet got playing time in LF yesterday, and was given a nice review by Mills, so I'm not sure what that guy has to do to stick with the Big League team. Daigle has been lights out this Spring, while Moehler and Byrdak have taken their sweet time to get ready for the season to start (though I understand Byrdak's predisposition to throwing with his left arm is a reason why he's a roster lock). Hopefully with the performances shown this spring by these three, that means there's a short leash on the big league guys.

Astros invite eight to Spring Training

Brian McTaggart tells us the Astros have invited eight to Major League Spring Training:

Pitchers: Roy Corcoran, Ryan Sadowski, Casey Daigle, Gary Majewski

Infielders: Chris Shelton, Drew Meyer, Oswaldo Navarro

Outfielders: Alex Romero
