Friday Morning Hot Links

Alright, there's life in this off-season yet. Again: I'm perfectly fine with a boring off-season.

*The Astros, unsurprisingly, tendered contracts to Carlos MF Correa, Lance McCullers, and Aledmys Diaz, and agreed to terms on a 1-year deal with Austin Pruitt. Correa and McCullers will be free agents after 2021 if they don't sign an extension. Fun, huh?

*Chandler Rome: Five non-tendered players the Astros could consider this off-season.

*Jeremy Pena - the Astros' 3rd-Round pick in 2018 - is one of the best-hitting prospects in the Dominican Winter League.

*Here's one of the dumbest things you'll read today: if the Yankees can't sign DJ LeMahieu (French for "DJ The Mahieu") then their Plan B is...Michael Brantley.

*Former Astros Great Thomas Eshelman has cleared waivers and is now a free agent.

*FanGraphs has an updated international prospect list.

*The Staten Island Yankees have filed a lawsuit against the New York Yankees and Major League Baseball, setting the stage for a battle between 60% of the Five Boroughs, something that Don Winslow warned is a Really Not Good Idea.

Saturday Morning Hot Links

Well that was very stupid. Lance McCullers didn't record an out, the Astros rallied late, but fell even later in extra innings where the bullpen had to record all the outs prior to a double-header today. Houston is 21-16, 5-10 on the road. Houston is 2-6 in extra-inning games.

*The Astros were 3x24 with runners in scoring position. Reddick, Maldonado, and Toro each had three ABs with RISP, and all three came up empty. After scoring three runs in the top of the 9th to tie it, they were 0x6 w/RISP in the 10th and 11th Innings. Dusty:

We did fight back in the ninth, but a lot of times you lose the game before the ninth. It was very frustrating tonight to see opportunities squandered.

*Abraham Toro was 0x4 with two strikeouts. In 24 games in 2020, Toro is "hitting" .149/.230/.299. His 47 wRC+ ranks 284th out of 308 MLB players with at least 60 PAs.

*Michael Brantley had his 10th multi-hit game of the season.

*Lance McCullers failed to record an out for the first time in his career, walking three and allowing two hits to the first five batters he faced. Five of his 18 pitches were strikes. McCullers:

Just dealing with a weird period right now, kind of started a few days ago. But I'll be fine. My stuff wasn't there...Dusty didn't want me to have to battle through that in this period and kind of save it for another day.

McCullers: 0.0IP, 2H/3ER, 0K:3BB

Bullpen: 10.1IP, 5H/3R (2ER), 10K:8BB

McCullers told Chandler Rome:

I had TJ and also had some cleanout in the back. They basically split your triceps and go in there and shave bone and take out old scar tissue. I'm just dealing with a little bit of discomfort and just an awkward feeling back there.

Every part of my reproductive organs retreated to the safety of the inside of my body just reading that.

*Luis Garcia - who had not pitched above Fayetteville - made his MLB debut in relief and threw 4.1IP, 1H/1ER, 2K:3BB. Dusty, on Garcia:

He saved us. Had he gone out there and spit the bit, I would have really been upside down for [Saturday]. The whole bullpen did an outstanding job. The kid saved us.

*Jose Altuve is likely out for the weekend with a knee sprain, and an IL stint hasn't been determined yet.

*Game 4 Hero Jose Urquidy said he was quarantined with COVID-19 symptoms for 35-40 days in Houston.

*Let's get weird! Brandon Bielak will start Game 1 today, Game 4 Hero Jose Urquidy will start Game 2. With Peacock close to returning, this may be Bielak's last chance to impress and stay on the team.

*Bregman is close. Bregman:

I'm ready and I'm excited. Hopefully, that's soon. I'm just working out with the trainers and strength coaches, and they've done an amazing job helping me out. And I'm looking forward to it, looking forward to getting back to doing what I love and competing and playing the game.

Bregman hasn't played since leaving the game on August 19. After an 0x5 on July 29, Bregman was hitting .174/.321/.348. From July 31-Aug 19 he hit .304/.392/.551. The Astros are 7-5 since he's been on the IL.

*Austin Pruitt - who was acquired from the Rays a matter of days before Luhnow was terminated, leading to the Rays' James Click (Jiminy Clicket) taking over the reins - had surgery to repair a hairline fracture in his right elbow, and will be out until early 2021. We also find that Joe Biagini was optioned to the alternate training site, with Chris Devenski activated.

Biagini, with Toronto: 309.1IP, 340H/163ER, 276K:115BB, 4.74 ERA/1.43 WHIP, 4.28 FIP

Biagini, with Houston: 19IP, 31H/22ER, 14K:13BB, 10.42 ERA/2.32 WHIP, 8.56 FIP

Biagini, 2020: 4.1IP, 10H/10ER, 4K:4BB, 20.77 ERA /3.23 WHIP.

Biagini has made 17 appearances for the Astros. He has allowed a baserunner in 15 of them, and didn't allow a hit in just four. His 10.42 ERA is the 4th-worst in Astros history among relievers with at least 10IP thrown, behind Felipe Paulino, Stephen Randolph, and Casey Daigle.

Tuesday Morning Hot Links

The Astros beat the Mariners 8-5 thanks to Alex Bregman and Jose Altuve. Houston is 3-1.

Josh James threw 3IP, 3H/3ER, 5K:5BB, HBP, WP. 39 of his 75 pitches were thrown for strikes. Brandon Bielak came in and threw 3.1IP, 4H/2R (1ER), 4K:0BB in his MLB debut in relief, getting his first MLB win. Dusty, on Bielak:
It was a great debut for him. He saved our tail. He came in today and threw a lot of strikes, competed, attacked, executed.

*Alex Bregman hit his 100th career home run in his 521st career game, one pitch after Jose Altuve hit his 300th career double. He's the 18th Astro to hit 100 home runs.

Altuve's 300th double came in his 1247th game. Craig Biggio - who is 5th all-time in MLB in doubles - hit his 300th double in his 1432nd game.

*For just the 3rd time in his career, George Springer was 0x5 with 3K:0BB. He's 1x16 to start the season.

*Michael Brantley was 2x3 with a double and is hitting .467/.529/.800 so far.

*Dustin Garneau hit his first career triple. Astros catchers hit .429/.467/.521 in four games against the Mariners.

*McTaggart has some takeaways after the first series of the season, including the state of the pitching staff in which we find that Ryan Pressly and Chris Devenski are both dealing with elbow soreness. That's, uh, that's not ideal. The only healthy relievers with more than a year of service time are Roberto Osuna and Joe Biagini. Dusty thinks the quick ramp-up to the season is to blame. Austin Pruitt has been shut down.

*Taylor Jones, who made his MLB debut on Sunday, was optioned to Satellite Camp on Monday. With Verlander on the IL, the Astros brought up Brandon Bielak and Nivaldo Rodriguez. The 40 Man Roster is now full. More arms to work with, though eight of them are rookies. Framber will start today's game against the Dodgers and Wednesday's start - which was to be Verlander's - just might be a bullpen game.

*Now that there's been a day of separation between the Verlander News and some time to let it sink in...Dusty, on Verlander:
He's in a good frame of mind...I've always called him a medical marvel. This guy works and he believes that he's close to Superman and he really is and I'm just hoping he's Superman this time, too, but without hurting himself.

SI's Emma Baccellieri: Where do the Astros go without Justin Verlander? FanGraphs: Verlander's impact on the already-thin rotation.

*George Springer had his first Zoom press conference on Monday, and was asked about his upcoming free agency. He didn't really say anything, which is pretty much exactly what you would expect him to say, given that he's trying to secure what is likely his only/last big contract. Also, Springer has made over $31m plus whatever the pro-rated pay is for 2020, so it's not like he's trying to set himself up...this is more like setting your 3rd and 4th generations up. Still, George Springer should get paid all the money. I just don't know that the Astros will do it.

So let's look at the years that Astros will hit free agency:

After 2020: George Springer, Michael Brantley, Josh Reddick, Brad Peacock
After 2021: Justin Verlander, Zack Greinke, Carlos Correa, Lance McCullers, Roberto Osuna, Joe Smith, Martin Maldonado, Chris Devenski

*David Barron: The Dodgers are way more worried about COVID than 2017 as they come to Houston.

*Astros.com: Inside the UH facility hosting the Astros' taxi squad.

*FanGraphs' David Laurilia had a conversation with Astros prospect Tyler Ivey.

*Todd Kalas will return to the booth tonight after testing positive for COVID.

*11 Miami Marlins and two coaches tested positive for COVID. Their game against the Phillies last night was postponed. The Phillies' entire visiting clubhouse staff are under quarantine. Infectious disease specialists can't believe the Marlins and Phillies played on Sunday. The Marlins won't play today, either, as they wait on a new batch of tests to either go to Baltimore or cancel that game, as well. "This is way more than a wake-up call" - where MLB goes from here. MLB's worst nightmare is here (and, surprise! they could have planned for it).

*Former Astros Great Mike Foltynewicz will be designated for assignment by the Braves.

*Last Chance U: Laney is now on Netflix.

*Defector, you say?

Sunday Evening Hot Links

Note: Hot Links will return Tuesday morning, and go back to the morning posting schedule from that point forward until after the World Series.

*Justin Verlander threw 5IP today, with 3H/1ER, 7K:1BB - the lone run was a homer by Jack Mayfield. Cristian Javier announced his presence with authority: 4.1IP, 6H/1ER, 3K:1BB. Cristian Javier is going to be a freaking star.

*There's an 80% chance of rain in Kansas City tomorrow (Monday) evening. If it looks like the game will get rained out, the Astros just won't go to Kansas City. If there's no game tomorrow, they won't play on Tuesday, either. Great system you've set up here, MLB.

*Pitching matchups for this weekend:
Friday: Verlander vs Marco Gonzales
Saturday: McCullers vs Taijuan Walker
Sunday: Greinke vs Yusei Kikuchi
Monday: Josh James vs Kendall Graveman

*Dusty Baker says that Roberto Osuna isn't hurt, he just came to Camp late ("through no fault of his own").

*Austin Pruitt is apparently ahead of Brad Peacock in terms of being ready for Opening Day, but neither will be ready for Opening Day.

*Brandon Bielak and Framber Valdez are trying to make the team out of Summer Training.

*Chandler Rome: No one is talking about George Springer's impending free agency.

*Dusty Baker, on John Lewis.

*Aledmys Diaz thinks Yordan will "be ready." When? Who freaking knows.

*Former Astros Great Collin McHugh is opting out of the 2020 season. Reminder that Collin McHugh did every single thing the Astros asked of him, and he is not to be slandered in any way on this web site.

*Tony Gwynn made his MLB debut on this date in 1982. Some key things to remember about Tony Gwynn:

-His lowest OPS+ in a season was 105...in his 2nd year with the Padres.
-From 1984 to 2001 Tony Gwynn hit .340/.390/.463, a 134 OPS+.
-Tony Gwynn's highest single-season strikeout total was 82, in 1987.
-Tony Gwynn had more doubles than strikeouts in 1987, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001.
-Tony Gwynn's career games with four strikeouts: 0
-Tony Gwynn's career games with three strikeouts: 1
-Tony Gwynn's career games with two strikeouts: 33
-Tony Gwynn's career games with one strikeout: 365
-Tony Gwynn's career games with zero strikeouts: 2,041
-I had the good fortune of working at the Hall of Fame in 2008 when Tony Gwynn was inducted, and I got to meet him (and Cal Ripken, Jr.). Tony Gwynn was hands-down one of the kindest, nicest people I met, and I was extremely sad when he passed away.

*Derby County 1 - Leeds United 3.

Piss off, Derby County. Last year, after an unlikely Leeds' home defeat in the playoffs to Derby County, the Frank Lampard-led team wrecked the visitors' locker room and took a dump on the floor. Today they had to form a guard of honor at their own park to welcome the f***ing champions.

Thursday Evening Hot Links

First off: Thanks for sticking with me while I fight the Sads and try to find motivation to do normal things. Hot Links *should* return daily starting...right now, transitioning back to mornings next week.

*The Astros played an inter-squad game today, with Josh James squaring off against National Treasure Zack Greinke.

*Make sure you check out this Greinke profile from last week by Chandler Rome.

*For the 12th time in his career, and the 3rd time as an Astro, Justin Verlander will start Opening Day. Verlander:
One of my goals was to get my mechanics back to what they had been and get my velocity up to what it used to be, or better than last year anyway. I looked at this as an opportunity to get better. I went through a full rebuild process, working on getting my mechanics where I wanted them. I went down the rabbit hole.

*McTaggart also has an Inbox, in which he addressed the Astros' DH until Yordan's return, the Astros' bullpen with Joe Smith opting out, Forrest Whitley, and Cristian Javier.

*In yesterday's Notebook, McTaggart talked about Joe Smith, Austin Pruitt's impending IL stint, Bryan Abreu ready to come out of the bullpen, and Yuli Gurriel's desire to end his MLB career in Houston.

*Brent Strom is confident in his pitchers, despite [waves hands] all this.

*We are all Brent Strom.

*Click here to find the radio/tv broadcast info for the two exhibition games with Kansas City.

*ESPN's Baseball Dudes answered some big questions, and the Astros feature prominently.

*Former Astros Great Bud Norris was released by the Phillies. I had not noticed that Norris was not with a team in 2019 - he last pitched for St. Louis in 2018.

*Former Astros Great Tyler White has signed with South Korea's SK Wyverns.

*I'm so triggered by the Baseball-Reference Simulated 2020 season, with the Astros in 4th place at 50-45.

*Yahoo's Tim Brown: Are "MLB's newly-appointed villains" still feeling the hate?

*SI's Emma Baccellieri: How MLB families are navigating the 2020 season.

*The Athletic's Grant Brisbee in a must-read: 10 years ago, Bengie Molina did the most unlikely thing in baseball history.

*Back in April I wrote up a history of Leeds United on this here bolg. You would have to be deliberately obtuse to not know that I'm a fan. Today, Leeds beat last-place Barnsley 1-0, though to be fair, the one goal was an own goal on Barnsley. I had some definite World Series Blood Pressure going. Doesn't matter. What it means is that, with a West Bromwich Albion and/or a Brenford tie or loss, or - should those two teams win out - Leeds only need one point in their last two games to go back to the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

Thursday Morning Hot Links

The Astros lost to the Marlins 2-1. Springer, Brantley (2B), Garneau, Stubbs, and Jack Mayfield had hits. Houston was 0x1 w/RISP. Zack Greinke threw 3IP, 2H/0ER, 2K:0BB. 27 of his 38 pitches were for strikes. Pressly, Osuna, and Devenski had scoreless innings. Austin Pruitt threw 3IP, 4H/2ER, 0K:0BB.

Dusty: The Astros hitting is behind the pitching right now.

*Yordan has been shut down for 3-4 days due to his knee soreness. This is decidedly not a good sign. Correa has the back of a 60-year old and Yordan has the knees of a 70-year old. Manfred's punishment has officially gone too far.

In that link you can read about last year's Jimmy V Award winner Rob Mendez making an appearance at Astros camp.

*Kyle Tucker is hitless this Spring, but says "it will turn around." Tucker:
It's still Spring Training. It's kind of 'whatever' in Spring Training. I try to go out there and play and try to do well. But, I mean, if you don't, at the end of the day it's still Spring Training and you're still gearing up for the season, so that's when you really want to start doing well.

Kyle Tucker looks he like needs to drink a gallon of whole milk every day for the next six months, but he has played way more Major (or Minor) League Baseball than I will ever play. But when Dusty went on record on February 19 and said the longer that Josh Reddick plays in Spring Training, the worse it is for Tucker...Tucker needs to not have so much of a "whatever" stance if he hopes to break camp with the Astros. Maybe K-Tuck just likes Kerbey Lane Cafe and IKEA there in North Austin.

*Zack Greinke throws better when he works out less, a hypothesis I'm willing to test out.

*Austin Pruitt compared the analytics of the Astros and the Rays. Pruitt:
There's really not a whole lot (different). It is very, very similar. They give you the plots and the charts and whatnot. They show you what your stuff is doing, where it's best played in the zone, where you're going to get the most swings and misses. Really....it's pretty similar.

*Brian McTaggart asked Astros veterans which young guys have impressed them. It's a fun read.

Springer: Taylor Jones
Correa/Bregman: Myles Straw
Jared Hughes: Blake Taylor

Click for quotes.

*Jake Kaplan: Myles Straw might be the prototypical 26th Man. Kaplan:
When the Astros are at full strength, Straw will be best deployed as a late-game defensive replacement in center or as a pinch-running specialist. But when the inevitable injuries strike, his ability to move around will make for a more flexible roster.

*Cuts could be coming tomorrow.

*Something I'm sure will draw no media attention whatsoever and be met with zero condemnation: The Astros will celebrate their 2019 AL Pennant during the weekend of March 26-29. All fans on March 27 will get a replica AL trophy.

*Single-game tickets will go on-sale at 9am Central. I'm sure it will be smooth sailing for any of you wishing to embark on this journey.

*ESPN's David Schoenfield: What rewatching two 2017 World Series games (Games 4 & 5) tells us. An incredibly-honest note before he gets into his analysis:
None of this will change anyone's opinion on anything and there is no smoking gun, but here are my notes from re-watching the two games.

*I haven't subscribed to ESPN+ yet because I really think Leeds will go up this year (meaning NBC Sports will mean that I can watch them there), but Kiley McDaniel posted his Top 100 Prospects list.

*Tyler Bauer tied his Bit in telling the hitters what was coming to Gerrit Cole's spin rate. Bauer:
You know Brent Strom and those guys over there have a lot of different tips when it comes to spin. When he was with the Cardinals and everyone talked about going east and west, then he finally got over to Houston and got control of the reins a little bit and started talking about going north and south. People act like it's a new thing, but it's not a new thing.

Thursday Morning Hot Links

Split-Squad Day! Shoutout to the whiplash of getting notifications that the Astros both won and lost in the same 30 minutes.

Let's do the highlights, I guess. May I remind you that the Winner of Spring Training is whoever is not hurt at the end.

-The Cardinals beat the Astros, 7-5. Myles Straw had an inside-the-park home run, and a regular home run. Bregman went yard. Jose Urquidy threw 1.1IP, 2H/2ER, 1K:1BB. Forrest Whitley threw 1.2IP, 2H/3ER, 1K:1BB. Both hits were singles, and two runs scored because of the next guy (I already closed that tab, and I'm running late).

Alex Bregman got plunked, but it was by a 25-year old guy who hasn't made it above Double-A. Zero intent.

-The Astros beat the Mets, 4-2. Michael Brantley was 2x2, Springer 1x3. Austin Pruitt threw 3IP, 1H/0ER, 0K:0BB. Joe Biagini threw 2IP, 4H/2ER, 1K:0BB.

*Justin Verlander was scratched with groin discomfort. We also find:
-Brent Strom told Forrest Whitley to go back to how he delivered in high school
-Brad Peacock is getting closer to returning, and will likely be in the bullpen

*Josh Reddick could make his debut this weekend.

*Game 4 Hero Jose Urquidy went from a luxury to a necessity for the Astros.

*Jared Hughes' sprints to the mound changed his career. Hughes:
I was out of breath. I was worried about it, and then I started grunting and throwing as hard as I could. Even though I was in the low 90s, it was just way different and it felt good.

Wednesday Morning Hot Links

Heads up: For a few days now I've been working on kind of an over-arching timeline regarding the whole [waves hands] Astros sign-stealing scandal. Might be ready today, I'm not sure. In the meantime.

New Stuff:

*Brent Strom sat down with Chandler Rome and Brian McTaggart for a Q&A. Some highlights:
-The SP5 spot seems to now be between Austin Pruitt, Josh James, and Framber Valdez.
-The Astros used Gerrit Cole's delivery as a model for Josh James.
-He's "willing to bet" Forrest Whitley debuts in Houston this season.
-Strom likes Bryan Abreu.
-He misses A.J. Hinch.

In the Chandler Rome version, they've already identified some areas of improvement for Pruitt, especially with how he uses his pitches.

*Justin Verlander threw his first official bullpen session of Spring Training:
I felt good. I threw everything. I definitely wouldn't say everything was working, but I would say it's where it needs to be now.

And Dusty, on the new three-batter minimum (or end of the inning) rule:
It's a challenge for how you set your lineup, a challenge for how you bring in certain guys at certain times. I think the challenge is, especially the lefty. He might go to the wayside. That was a big job for some of these guys.

Tony Sipp was the last Astros' lefty-specialist.

*Jared Hughes will make $1.5m in 2020 if he makes the Astros, and can opt out of his contract if he is not added to the 40-Man Roster by March 18.

*Former Astros Great Scott Kazmir is 36 and will start throwing for teams this week in a comeback attempt. The only comeback I'm looking for from Kazmir is for Daniel Mengden and Jacob Nottingham to come back to the Astros. HEY-O.

Sign-Stealing Stuff

*Someone named "Jorge Castillo" wrote a BIG EXPOSE in the LA Times in which Rob Manfred confirmed, kind of, that the Astros used the trash can in the postseason. Manfred:
There was conflicting evidence on that point. But, you know, in an investigation you often have conflicting evidence and it was my view that the more credible evidence was that they continued to use the scheme for the postseason.

Castillo:
Astros players, most notably shortstop Carlos Correa, have insisted the trash-can system was abandoned in the postseason because Minute Maid Park, their home stadium, was too loud for batters to hear the bangs.

Not true! Six days ago Carlos Correa already admitted that the trash can was available in the playoffs. Correa:
The trash can was there. Yeah, I mean, if we had a chance, but I remember them coming using multiple signs and impossible to decode all those signs.

It wasn't how loud it was, it was the teams using multiple signals. None of what I just wrote makes anything Okay, mind you. If we're going to start quoting players, let's at least quote them correctly.

*Manfred talked to Evan Drellich and explained why MLB stuck with the immunity pledge to players who talked. Essentially: the MLBPA would have won any grievance they brought. Manfred:
Given the fact that we didn't think we could make discipline stick with the players, we made the decision we made. Having said that, I understand the reaction.

Manfred also acknowledged that MLB was too slow on the uptake to figure out how teams could use the video replay room to their advantage.

Jeff Passan notes how punishing the Astros players isn't as easy as it seems.

Pretty much everyone hates Rob Manfred right now.

*Rob Manfred said MLB would protect Mike Fiers if he comes to Houston.

*Braves "star" Nick Markakis thinks every Astro "needs a beating." Big talk from over yonder in the National League. Also Aaron Judge said more things.

*SI's Michael McCann breaks down how the Astros have created a divide in the MLBPA.

Other Stuff

*The Giants won't be inviting Noted Prick Aubrey Huff to their 10th anniversary World Series celebration.

*Locust swarms ravaging East Africa are the size of cities.

*My journey through Tijuana for the best surgery $2,000 can buy.

Saturday Morning Hot Links

There were actual baseballs being thrown. So here's how this is going to go: New baseball stuff will go at the top, sign-stealing stuff will go towards the bottom, and interesting things I come across will go below that. So if you want to skip the sign-stealing stuff, you don't have to do it at the top. Let's get to it, I guess...

*Justin Verlander was scheduled to throw on Friday, but didn't, because he threw a 60-pitch bullpen on Wednesday and wanted some extra rest.

*Lance McCullers is looking forward to a healthy 2020:
I feel like I've put in a lot of hard work over this past 15, 16 months. I've come a long way, not only physically, but also mentally and just kind of where I'm at and moving to the season. I'm excited to get going again, obviously. I've had to wait a long time. It felt like a lifetime but here we are, and I'm very excited to just be able to contribute again to the team and not only run to the clubhouse to get waters and bananas and stuff like that.

*Zack Greinke won't report to camp until February 22 - a full week after all other pitchers and catchers. What's the reason, Dusty?
Other than he's Zack Greinke. I've got no problem with that.

Check this 2019 piece on Greinke and his disdain for Spring Training.

Baker, on Altuve:
That's Mighty Mouse. He's a bad little dude. He's one of the best players, I think, that I've ever seen. I was talking to him yesterday. I always wanted to win a batting title as a player. I came in third a couple of times and this dude has three batting titles.

*Austin Pruitt is positioned to make the back-end of the rotation.

*Brad Peacock has had a recurrence of the nerve damage in his neck. He's throwing at 90 feet, but his Spring Training is officially delayed.

*Forrest Whitley reported to camp 40 pounds heavier than last year in an effort to be more durable.

*ESPN has added a couple of Astros games to their April slate: April 7 vs the Mets, April 20 at Tampa.

*Forgive me if I'm a few days late on this, but FanGraphs revealed their Top 100 Prospects list. Forrest Whitley is the lone Astros prospect in the list, what with the graduation of Kyle Tucker and the Greinke trade. On Whitley:
He wields one of the deepest repertoires in all of the mnors and, though the elite-looking changeup he showed during the 2018 Fall League was not present in 2019, all of his stuff is still above-average or better, both visually and on paper.

Game 4 Hero Jose Urquidy came in at 101. Meanwhile, Urquidy was one of five pitchers listed by The Athletic's Eno Sarris as having the stuff in a small sample size to warrant a breakout season in 2020.

*Make sure you check out What The Heck Bobby's conversation with Astros Scout Jim Stevenson.

Sign-Stealing Stuff

*Chandler Rome: The Astros are seeking a return to normalcy on the field. McCullers:
We apologized for it. I think you guys spoke to pretty much everyone on the 2017 team that's here in an Astros uniform. We meant what we said. We can't control how people feel yesterday or moving forward. We all addressed it. We all stand by what we individually said and we're looking forward to moving forward with a good 2020 club.

Dusty Baker:
It's all in the past now. I'm hoping the players don't have to answer any more questions about it. Because how many times can you say the same thing? It's time for us to get to work, put it behind us, ask for forgiveness. The guys said they were sorry.

*Mike Bolsinger: Why I'm suing the Houston Astros.

*FanGraphs' Ben Clements: The hypothetical value of an ideal, frictionless banging scheme.

*Tony Kemp was asked to use "the system" when he came up in 2017 and apparently said no.

*Nationals GM Mike Rizzo:
Somebody's got to say the word over there - 'cheated' - and that's important to me. We keep skirting around the word, and they cheated. They were found guilty of it, and I haven't heard it yet...We did it with character, dignity and did it the right way. We feel good about that.

*Nationals catcher Kurt Suzuki said the Astros were cheating in the 2019 World Series.

*The Athletic: New rules to prevent electronic sign-stealing are being discussed among MLB officials.

*Jake Marisnick:
I'm a grown man in a situation that I can stop, and I didn't stop it.

*John Smoltz had a warning to players/teams/fans who are going all-in on the Astros hate, because it may turn out that they're not so clean, either.

*Trevor Bauer, unsurprisingly, has a lot to say about the Astros. A snippet:
F*** you. You know? That's how I feel about their whole operation, especially, especially when you're so outspoken against stuff. If you take a stand and you're so firmly against stuff, you better f***ing make sure that you're not doing the stuff you're talking about.

*The Hero Who Hit .143 in the 2017 World Series - Cody Hollow Man Bellinger - had some strong words to say, including that Altuve stole the 2017 MVP from Aaron Judge and "everyone knows they stole the ring from us." The Dodgers are ready to kick some skulls.

*Brian Cashman:
The Houston Astros had a distinct advantage over their opponents. That's a fact.

*J.D Davis - who denied having knowledge of the banging scheme in December - said that, yeah, he knew about it, and of course is very sorry.

*Jeff Passan: How Jim Crane's apology became a farce.

Other Stuff

*Minor Leaguers are getting a raise in 2021. Minimum weekly salary by level:
Rookie/Short-Season: From $290 to $400
Class A: From $290 to $500
Double-A: From $350 to $600
Triple-A: From $502 to $700

Friday Night Hot Links

So late Thursday night the Astros traded Peyton Battenfield and Cal Stevenson to Tampa Bay for RHP Austin Pruitt.

Pruitt, 30, was born in The Woodlands (aka Fenway/Yankee Stadium Southwest) and went to the University of Houston. In 199.2IP for Tampa from 2017-19, Pruitt has allowed 222H/108ER, with 147K:50BB, for a 4.87 ERA / 1.36 WHIP. Is it impressive? No. Is it projectable? Sure.

Peyton Battenfield was the Astros' 9th Round pick in 2019. At Tri-City this season Battenfield threw 39.1IP, 23H/7ER, 46K:15BB (1.60 ERA / 0.97 WHIP). He'll be 23 next August.

Cal Stevenson was acquired by the Astros on July 31, 2019 in the trade that brought Joe Biagini and Aaron Sanchez from Toronto for Derek Fisher. Aaron "Not The Guy From Chopped" Sanchez threw the first 2/3 of a no-hitter and was never heard from again, and Biagini was funny and was also never heard from again. This closes the book on the Derek Fisher trade. Long may it remain in our collective amnesia.

Austin Pruitt, whose first name I have initially typed as "Jeremy" on no fewer than three occasions already in this post, is out of options. So, as McTaggart notes, he will either make the back end of the rotation, or he will go to the bullpen. Luhnow:
We're going to give him a chance to compete. He's started in his Major League career, so he's capable. He's got two different breaking balls, a good fastball and really good command, which means he should be able to get through some innings.

Tags also notes the spin-rate on Pruitt's curveball, which ranks 9th in MLB. Keep in mind Pruitt is also coming over from Tampa, who is really good at this sort of thing, and not the trash-ass Pirates, who didn't know how to use Gerrit F. Cole. That said, he only threw his curve 13% of the time in 2019. That's probably going to go up.

Dean Deetz was DFA'd to make room on the 40-Man Roster.

*The Astros avoided arbitration with Carlos Correa, who signed for 2020 for $8m. They also avoided arbitration with Chris Devenski, who will make $2m in 2020. At the time of writing, there's no word regarding the arbitration cases of George Springer, Roberto Osuna, Brad Peacock, and Aledmys Diaz.

*Alex Bregman is MLB.com's pick to still be an Astro in 2030.

*FanFest isSaturday, January 18. And Altuve, Bregman, Yordan, Kyle Tucker, Forrest Whitley, Aledmys Diaz, and others are scheduled to attend.

Thursday Morning Hot Links

*Someone who allegedly goes by "Austin Pruitt" absolutely shut the Astros down last night. Astros got nothing and lost 3-0, a closer game than you would have expected from Dallas Keuchel's 1st inning in which he allowed a Logan Morrison 2-run home run. Man I hate Logan Morrison. The Astros are 69-38. The Mariners lost, so the lead is 15 games with 55 games remaining.

*The Woodlands native and UH guy Pruitt shut down the Astros last night in just his 3rd career start, throwing 6.1IP, 5H/0ER, 3K:1BB, lowering his ERA from 6.63 to 5.65. Rays manager and Former Astros Great Kevin Cash:
Pruitt was awesome. I know he had a ton of family and friends [here]...He was excited to pitch here, and all the talk about it. But to go out and perform like that had to have been pretty special for him.

*Dallas Keuchel threw 5IP, 7H/3ER, 2K:2BB. He threw a first-pitch strike to 12 of the 24 batters he faced, and 49 of his 87 pitches were strikes. Keuchel:
Just had runners on, just couldn't quite get the two-out out to finish the inning...So we'll clean it up. I need to be better. It all started with me...It wasn't a good game by any means. We'll look to make some adjustments from there.

Hinch:
He wasn't sharp. But just from start to start...You look back at how much time he missed and then the rehab starts and then this being his second start - it's a step in the right direction.

*The Astros pitching staff was averaging 10.2 strikeouts per game over their first 101 games of the season. Last night was the 6th straight game - beginning with the Detroit series - that the Astros haven't recorded a double-digit strikeout game (tying a season-high), averaging 7.8 strikeouts per game.

*For all the talk about the Astros' inability to go deep into a game, Mike Petriello notes that the Dodgers are doing the same thing:
Through Monday morning, just over 52% of all Major League starts this year had gone at least six innings. The Dodgers, at 46.7%, rank only 22nd by that measure. The Astros, at 44.2%, rank just 25th.

*Jose Altuve is 0x8 in August after having gone hitless in just two games in July. So, essentially, no Altuve, Springer, or Correa in the lineup for two games. I doubt there are too many more games like this for Altuve.

*The Astros GIDP'd three times last night, the 8th time that's happened this season (4-4).

*The Astros were 0x9 w/RISP last night, and are 1x14 w/RISP in the last two games. In the 3rd inning, the Astros had runners on 1st and 3rd with nobody out before Derek Fisher struck out and Jose Altuve GIDP'd.

*Just in case you're thinking about freaking out:
-The 2016 Cubs went 5-15 from June 20 - July 9 and saw their lead cut from 12.5 to 6.5 games.
-The 2015 Royals went 8-16 from September 4 - September 29.
-The 2014 Giants went 7-20 from June 9 - July 8 and saw their 10-game lead evaporate to 0.5 games in that span.
-The 2013 Red Sox went 4-10 between April 30 - May 14
-The 2012 Giants went 6-10 between July 25 - August 10.

We could do this all day. What do the above teams have in common? They all won the World Series that year. It's a rough patch, and every team goes through them. McCullers hasn't been the same and is now on the DL. Will Harris is on the DL. Correa and Springer are out. Injuries are piling up, but we're all tearing our hair out, and they're still 9-8 since the All-Star Break.

*Ken Rosenthal has an interesting post on Facebook dot com in which he (sort of) defends the Astros' Monday Massacre, opening with the following:
The Astros entered Monday thinking they were going to trade for three relievers: Francisco Liriano, Zach Britton and a third, unidentified high-end type whose addition would have surprised the industry, according to major-league sources.

The Mystery Reliever was not Britton, according to Rosenthal's sources, which means that it wasn't Peter Angelos who vetoed the trade. But the Orioles did balk at the physical of one of the Astros who would have joined Baltimore. Remember they pulled that crap on Dexter Fowler before the 2016 season. Then the Orioles went all Houdini on both the Dodgers and the Astros - a common Baltimore tactic - who were in on Britton (the phrase "cold feet" is used, referring to Baltimore). According to Rosenthal's sources, the Astros apparently had a better package for Yu Darvish, but the Rangers went with the Dodgers in the end.

Read the whole thing. It doesn't absolve the Astros of any "wrong-doing" (quotations mine), but it does provide a little background. There are, however, two camps whose narrative this story contradicts:
1. The "Astros hoard prospects" camp. Regardless of the results, the Astros were prepared to part with enough prospects to bring in two high-end relievers. Rosenthal isn't the type of reporter who would only get the Astros side on this story, so there are multiple teams who confirmed that the Astros were going to get Britton and the Mystery Reliever, which would have involved some serious names.
2. The "Astros didn't try" camp. They tried. They failed. I know exactly what's going to happen down in the comments on this, and that's fine.

The Orioles and the Mystery Team can Lady & The Tramp a plate of tapeworms, as far as I'm concerned. But whatever. This will serve as confirmation bias for whatever your viewpoint likely is, anyway.

*George Springer did sprints and agility drills for the first time since going on the DL with that injured quad, but a return on Friday is "unlikely." Springer:
It's a good starting point. When I feel right and 100 percent, I'll go back out there.

*From UniWatch's Paul Lukas: The oral history of the Astros' rainbow uniforms.

*Jose Altuve won the AL Player of the Month award, of course. When you hit .485/.523/.727 in a month, it should sort of be expected. His .485 average is tied for the 4th-highest in baseball since 1961. Yulieski Gurriel won the Aaron Judge Rookie of the Month award after hitting .304/.333/.565 in July.

*Two pieces from AC writers for your pleasure this morning: the Masked Marvel took a look at who was traded (by other teams) at the Deadline, and Cockroach chimes in with his thoughts on Dallas Keuchel's comments.

*The Indians lost Andrew Miller to the DL and Josh Tomlin for six weeks. Max Scherzer says it feels like he has a pinched nerve in his neck.

*For what it's worth, the Tigers did the predictable thing and put Justin Verlander on revocable waivers. How would he end up with the Astros? As follows:
1. The Astros - who are 29th in line - put in a waiver claim and the 28 teams with a worse record don't. Verlander still would have to approve it.
2. Verlander clears waivers and the Astros and Tigers are able to work out a trade (talks could be on-going with any other team, as well), and Verlander approves it.

*Carlos Correa is dating Miss Texas Daniella Rodriguez, if that sort of thing interests you.

*The Astros made the August Splash we've been waiting for, signing the Atlantic League's Rico Noel. He successfully stole 301 bases in 369 attempts in the minors.
