Big League Stew's NL Central preview
The only really worthwhile aspect of Yahoo Sports these days is the Big League Stew, and today they posted their NLC preview. Here's a taste:
Am I nuts for thinking I'd rather have the Pirates' roster than the Astros' right now? Houston probably has it over Pittsburgh in starting pitching. Brett Myers , Wandy Rodriguez and J.A. Happ are a decent top three. Definitely better than Kevin Correia , Paul Maholm and Ross Ohlendorf . But I look at the Pirates' everyday lineup and see encouraging upside.

Yahoo gazes into their crystal ball and finds mountains and mountains of crap
Over at Big League Stew, Alex Remington was asked "How many games will the 2011 Astros win?"
Quoting Dan Szymborski:
Of the players predicted to make up the Astros' 25-man roster, Szymborski only sees four players likely to achieve production above league average: hitters Hunter Pence and Carlos Lee, and starting pitchers Wandy Rodriguez and Brett Myers.
So this isn't going very well.
The Astros don't have a single player as good as Pirate center fielder Andrew McCutchen, and they might not have anyone as good as third baseman Pedro Alvarez, either. After years of Pirate dominance of the NL Central cellar, the race for the bottom might finally be competitive in 2011.
So what's the verdict?
I'm predicting a 64-98 record.

Chris Johnson makes Yahoo's All-Rookie Team
Yahoo's Steve Henson is far kinder to Chris Johnson than anyone in any sort of -stream media has been, making him 3B1 on Yahoo's All-Rookie Team:
A former college player who took parts of five seasons to reach the big leagues, Johnson at 26 has shown he can hit for average and power, solving a problem position for the Astros for years to come.

Bagwell for the HOF? Yahoo takes a look
Random, spotty updates abound until later tonight, but here Yahoo takes a gander at Bagwell's HOF candidacy.
To sum up:
During his career, Bagwell was never the best first baseman in baseball: First it was Frank Thomas, then briefly it was Mark McGwire, and then it was Albert Pujols. All have strong cases for the Hall, and Bagwell will have to hope he isn't penalized by voters for having too many talented colleagues. Fortunately, he retired before most of his peers, so he'll have a few years' head start. So he will have to hope that he can get voted in before their names start to appear on the ballot.
We'll have more on this when the time is right.

"Good chance" Plutko goes to UCLA
Yahoo's Kendall Rogers has a nice rundown of the status of some top-level draftees heading into the signing deadline, including 6th Round pick Adam Plutko:
The Bruins also have their eyes on high school signees Adam Plutko and Zach Weiss. Plutko was a sixth-round selection of the Astros and Weiss a 10th-round pick by Pittsburgh. There’s a good chance both players go to college but it will be a long weekend in Westwood.
On 3rd Round pick Austin Wates:
Virginia Tech has its eyes on veterans Austin Wates and Jesse Hahn. Wates was a third-round pick of the Astros and he reportedly has been to Houston for a physical. Wates is expected to sign assuming he passes the physical.
We already know that Wates passed his physical, so expect an announcement soon, I guess.

Dodgers have been aggressive, apparently
Yahoo's Tim Brown tells the world that:
Losers of four in a row and with 13 of their next 17 games against the San Francisco Giants and San Diego Padres, the Dodgers, according to baseball sources, have been very aggressive in their pursuit of pitching, both for the rotation and the bullpen. They continue to call the Houston Astros on Roy Oswalt, the Chicago Cubs on Ted Lilly, the Diamondbacks on Haren and even the Cleveland Indians on Jake Westbrook and Fausto Carmona."
And about the Yankees?
The Yankees aren’t so concerned with Andy Pettitte’s groin injury that they’ll seek a replacement starter, though a source said they’ll continue conversations in case Sergio Mitre falters. They do like Oswalt, but certainly not as much as they did Lee, and view Oswalt’s contract as a detriment.
So everybody's in on Roy, and nobody's in on Roy.

Berkman doesn't think he or Roy will be traded, weeps
Interesting article from Jeff Passan on what Berkman thinks are the chances that he and Roy will be traded:
Berkman:
“I think it’s unlikely they’re going to work something out for Roy, and he’s a lot more attractive trade candidate for another team. It’s an even longer shot something’s going to happen with me...
...“The baseball landscape has changed. Teams value their prospects more than they ever have. I’m 34. I’m not having a great year. Who knows how many more years I’ve got left or what my production’s going to be? As a slugger, you get into your mid-to-late 30s, start struggling, and then it’s like you might be done. I don’t blame somebody for thinking that.”
And Berkman and Oswalt have their stories together, with Berkman being more specific than Roy on where he wants to be traded, referencing the Angels as a potential destination:
That wouldn’t be an automatic yes. That would be a long, hard thought. Especially because I’d rather go east than west. It would have to be a contender. There is absolutely no way I would consent to going somewhere that didn’t have a good chance not just to get to the playoffs, but to win the whole thing. That would be consideration No. 1.”
And Oswalt, who seems to be losing his grip on reality:
“I’ve heard a few things about money here and there. It all boils down to who needs starting pitching. It’s not about the money with some teams.”
This is interesting. Very interesting. Because after not hearing from Berkman for a while he pops up like a Whack-A-Mole and gives particulars: East, rather than West. Contender. "Absolutely no way." So while Lance wants to be traded - seemingly desperately - he sure is making a whole lot of noise about where he wants to go. And while Berkman says the landscape has changed, he and Roy are the ones changing that landscape.

Maybe Jeff Passan shouldn't say anything at all
Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan breaks down the Astros' off-season, and it's not pleasant.
Passan lists four ways to not improve a team, and coincidentally, the Astros made all four moves (two are valid, two are asinine). But his main beef is with the draft:
Houston’s track record in the amateur draft is not just embarrassing. It’s stupefying, short-sighted, blatantly stupid, hilarious in a what-in-the-Sam-Hill-are-they-doing fashion and, well, if there’s one word for it, then it’s ironically appropriate: amateurish.
Since 2006, the Astros have spent $15.4 million on four amateur drafts. It is the lowest figure in baseball. Though they have coughed up $10.7 million in the last two drafts, the spoils won’t show for at least another two years...
...The 2006 and 2007 drafts are among the decade’s worst. No player from 2006 has made the major leagues, and the Astros spent only $1.4 million in 2007, which hasn’t graduated anyone, either. Houston’s insistence on hewing to slot recommendations at the behest of commissioner Bud Selig while most of the 29 other teams ignore them shows that playing company man isn’t always the best route.
The Astros are old. They are financially hamstrung. Their owner, Drayton McLane, is trying to sell. There is no quick fix here, not with Myers or Lindstrom or Lyon or Feliz, and they’re the only ones who didn’t see it coming.
And then there's a clever little haiku.
