The Astros have traded Cy-Fair grad, UH alum, and 2010 16th Round pick Chris Wallace (hence the Big Poppa nickname) to Cleveland for LHP Eric Berger.
In parts of four seasons, Wallace hit .272/.348/.464 from Greeneville to OKC. Last season, in 63 games at Corpus, he hit .251/.330/.397 and .270/.357/.351 in 15 games for OKC.
Berger, a 26-year old, 6'2" 205lb LHP, was drafted out of the University of Arizona by the Indians in the 8th Round of the 2008 draft (18 selections after the Astros took Brad Dydalewicz).
In six minor-league seasons (135 games, 78 starts), Berger has thrown 481IP, allowing 453H/209 ER, 456K:220BB with a 3.91 ERA/1.40 WHIP.
He spent most of his time at Triple-A Columbus (26 of his 31 starts). In 88.1IP, he allowed 92H/54ER, with 78K:29BB, a 5.50 ERA/1.37 WHIP with a more-palatable 4.81 FIP. Berger will report to Oklahoma City.
Why do this? The Astros have a lot of catchers, and not a lot of lefty bullpen options. It looks like a change-of-scenery thing for Berger, and possible more playing time and opportunity for Chris Wallace.

Sunday Morning Links
*The Astros made their first round of cuts this morning, and there are no surprises:
Reassigned to minor-league camp were: Delino DeShields, Jake Goebbert, Marc Krauss, George Springer, and Chris Wallace. Optioned to minor-league camp were Rudy Owens and Sam Demel.
Again, no surprises, bu the Astros got to see DeShields and Springer for a handful of ABs. Sam Demel threw in five games and lasted 2.1IP, allowing 10H/11ER, 4HR, 1K:3BB - so it's absolutely not a surprise that he got optioned down.
*Luhnow said that we could see Krauss in Houston at some point this year. The next round of cuts will likely be Wednesday.
*Rick Ankiel is giving back to the younger Astros.
*Jake Goebbert discusses his off-season job as a farmer.
*The owner/GM of The Woodlands Strykers is pretty jazzed up about the possibility of a Triple-A team nearby.

Post-trade tranzactionz
In light of this morning's mega-deal, we've got a whole bundle of roster moves for you:
*Dallas Keuchel will be recalled from OKC to take J.A. Happ's spot in the rotation, starting tomorrow.
*Francisco Cordero and Ben Francisco will join the big club today in Phoenix, taking Happ's and Lyon's immediate spots, but another move will need to make room for Keuchel by tomorrow's game.
Thanks to the Chronicle, we learn:
*Asher Wojciechowski is headed to AA Corpus Christi.
*Carlos Perez will go to high-A Lancaster.
*David Rollins is going to low-A Lexington.
*Joe Musgrove will report to Rookie-ball Greeneville.
Also, courtesy of Greg Rajan, catcher Chris Wallace is moving up to OKC from Corpus, and catcher Ben Heath is moving up to Corpus from Lancaster (where Perez will take his spot).
And, not a transaction, but Jeff Luhnow says that even with Cordero's arrival, Brett Myers remains the Astros' closer... "for now."

PreStros Farm Report: April 17
PreStros: April 17
Game Postponed
Tulsa (COL) starter Edwar Cabrera had a perfect game through 8 innings against Corpus until a Chris Wallace single to lead off the ninth broke it up. That single was the only base runner Corpus got for the game as they lost 4-0.
Ross Seaton pitched well with 7 innings allowing 4 R on 6 H and 2
BB with 4 K. Unfortunately two of those six hits were home runs. Arcenio Leon pitched
the final inning with 2 BB and 1 K.
C-Chris Wallace went 1x3 and was the only Corpus base runner all
night.
Man of the Match: Chris Wallace
The JetHawks combined solid pitching with a strong offensive effort, including a 9-run second inning, to beat High Desert (SEA) 11-3.
Ruben Alaniz gave 6 innings and allowed 3 R on 8 H with 0 BB and 7
K. Gabriel Garcia turned in 2 IP with 3 H. Kirk Clark pitched a perfect 9th.
LF-Adam Bailey was 3x5 with 2 R and 1 HR. 3B-Jonathan Meyer went
2x4 with 2 R and 2 RBI. RF-Domingo Santana was 1x3 with 1 BB, 2 R, and 2 RBI on
1 HR. 2B-Enrique Hernandez went 2x4 with 1 2B, 1 R, and 1 RBI.
Man of the Match: Domingo Santana
After falling behind 6-0 after the 2nd
inning, the Legends battled back to make it a 1 run game before ultimately
falling to Greenville (BOS) 10-6.
Tanner Bushue had another rough outing,
going just 2 innings while allowing 6 R (4 ER) on 5 H and 1 BB with 2 K. He
also had 2 errors. Luis Cruz went 4 innings giving up 1 R on 3 H and 1 BB with
4 K. Murilo Gouvea threw 2.1 innings and gave up 3 R on 3 H, 1 BB, and 2 HBP
with 3 K.
Bushue is now 0-3 on the season with a
20.86 ERA and opponents are hitting .524 against him. I can’t help but wonder
if there’s something wrong with him after his first three starts.
2B-Delino DeShields was 2x5 with 1 R, 2 SB,
and 1 error. 1B-Zachary Johnson was 1x3 with 1 HR and 1 error. DH-Mike
Kvasnicka was 0x4 with 4 K. Kvasnicka is hitting just .083/.175/.139 on the
season with 15 K in 36 AB.
Man of the Match: Zach Johnson

Wallace, Garcia invited to Major-League camp
Alyson Footer
says that the Astros have invited catchers Chris Wallace and Rene Garcia to Major-League Camp.
I guess we'll just have to see what that means for Castro's rehab, and Humberto Quintero.

Corpus' corresponding moves annoucned
So last night, after Chris Wallace got brought up to Corpus from Lexington, there were your requisite corresponding moves:
Brought Up
Chris Wallace, from Lexington to Corpus
Sent Down
Federico Hernandez, from Corpus to Lancaster
Released
Matt Nevarez
Signed
Pitcher Mike Perconte
Perconte is a 25-year old RHP who has spent three full seasons in the minors - from 2008-2010 with the Cubs, and 2011 with Double-A Frisco in the Rangers system. He has a career 4.18 ERA/1.37 WHIP, with 229H/110ER, 235K:94BB in 236.2IP.
For Frisco, he allowed 27H/17ER, 28K:15BB in 28.1IP.
Nevarez' releasing is unsurprising given that, in Corpus in 2010-11, he has 64K:71BB, and had walked 23 batters in 21IP in 2011. Nevarez did come to Houston from Texas as part of the Pudge trade in August 2009.
Greg Rajan said it best about Hernandez:
Not shocking that Federico Hernandez was demoted, just that it took this long took many around the team by surprise. After all, how many MLB teams keep a .140 hitter as their No. 1 Double-A catcher for an entire half? Not sure what #Astros were thinking.

Chris Wallace gets rewarded for winning SAL Home Run Derby
Lexington catcher Chris Wallace ain't messin' with no Lancaster, getting called up to Double-A Corpus Christi.
Wallace was hitting .285/.356/.550 despite hitting .194/.225/.500 over his last ten games, and .238/.306/.540 in June. This is actually better than his May, where he hit .219/.294/.344.
It makes perfect sense for Wallace to not play in Lancaster, but it negatively impacts one of three catchers: Federico Hernandez, Brian Esposito, or Emerson Frostad. Frostad had played in 12 games, Esposito in 14, and Hernandez got the majority of the starts, with 48. Except Hernandez is hitting .142/.202/.226, Esposito is hitting .150/.164/.167, and Frostad actually has an OPS above .SUCK with a .292/.327/.375 line.

Chris Wallace has no cheek
With a captip to both Farmstros and Deputy Street, here's a sweet article on Chris Wallace.
It's well-documented how Barret Loux shattered his face, but we get a glimpse into what makes Wallace such an exciting prospect from Rodney Linares:
"The good thing about it is that he's driving the ball out of the park, and he hasn't pulled the ball yet," Manager Rodney Linares said. "Everything's been right-center, left-center and right field. He's hitting the ball hard, and he's consistent with his approach."
Where should he be freed? Linares answers:
"My biggest thing is, if he's going to move, he probably deserves to go to Double-A."

"My biggest thing is, if he's going to move, he probably deserves to go to Double-A."

And had 3RBI on the night in a 6-3 win over Savannah. Wallace is now slugging .914. Even with an 0x4 on April 20, Wallace is hitting .415/.455/1.000 in his last ten games.
