It seems that there may have been another round of cuts in minor league camp this morning. All we know for sure is that outfielder Jon Gaston has been cut. Gaston had a monster season at Lancaster in 2009 when he hit 35 homeruns with a slash line of .278/.367/.598, but he's regressed in the two seasons since with Corpus Christi.
We'll update as more names come out.

The Express snap their losing streak, taking a 6-1 lead and having to hold on for a 6-5 win over Iowa. Bud Norris threw 4.2IP of rehab baseball, allowing 8H/5ER, 3K:3BB, and throwing 49 of his 86 pitches for strikes. Sergio Perez picked up the win, holding Iowa scoreless for 2.2IP (2H, 3K:2BB) and Roy Corcoran finishing it with 1.2 perfect IP. The Express picked up 10 hits, four each from Bourgeois, Navarro, Bogusevic, and Locke. Drew Meyer was 1x2 with a sac fly, walk, double, and 4RBI.

Man. David Duncan was all over the place, pitching for three of the Astros' minor-league affiliates: Tri-City, Lexington, and Lancaster. He started the season in Lancaster, went 0-9 in 10 starts with an 8.51 ERA, and was sent to figure out what the heck was going on - which he did, presumably, over 13 starts between Tri-City and Lexington.

What happened?
Duncan performed well once he got out of the Coors Light (see what I did there?), posting WHIPs of 0.98 and 1.34 at Tri-City and Lexington, respectively. Everything got better for Duncan upon leaving the Cali League: K/9, BB/9, H/9. So whether Duncan repeats at Lexington before jumping to Corpus, or they throw him and his self-confidence to the wolves remains to be seen.
What went right?
K:BB ratio. Even at his season's worst - in Lancaster - Duncan walked 3.1 batters per nine innings, and had almost a 2:1 K:BB ratio, while his career K:BB ratio sits at a nice 3.87:1. He has walked 38 batters in 181 career innings.
What went wrong?
Hard to say. Maybe having Duncan jump from Tri-City in 2008, where he posted a 4.88 ERA/1.25 WHIP in 55.1 career IP, straight to Lancaster. Regarless, it took the Astros 48.2 rough innings in Lancaster to realize he was in over his 6'9" head. Maybe a repeat at Lexington before jumping past the California League wouldn't be the worst thing.

Interesting scouting report on David Duncan
Baseball America posted an extra set of scouting reports, and Lancaster/Tri-City pitcher David Duncan is included:
Duncan began 2009, his first full pro season, at high Class A Lancaster, one of the worst pitcher's parks in the minors. He went 0-9, 8.51 in two months, with his difficulties compounded by the fact that the Astros wouldn't let him use his 82-84 mph splitter. It's his best pitch, but he tended to rely on it too much. Duncan found more success after a demotion to low Class A Lexington, where Houston let him use his splitter again. The rest of his repertoire is below-average. A tall, lanky lefthander throwing from a high three-quarters arm slot, Duncan also has an 86-89 mph fastball and a slow, loopy curveball. Though he doesn't miss many bats, he does do a good job of keeping the ball on the ground. Some scouts think he profiles better as a reliever than as a starter. He'll return to Lancaster in 2010.

Eddie's Farm: September 3
Last weekend of the season for everyone in the minor-league system, and then they'll all go home, and having learned a lesson from Ed Wade about "rewards."
Round Rock
Albuquerque got a walk-off single in the bottom of the 9th for a 5-4 win over Round Rock. Reggie Abercrombie and Lou Santangelo had three hits each - Santangelo connecting on his 4th homer of the year. Chris Johnson was 2x4, and the other three RBI came from Johnson, Saccomanno, and Yordany. Billy Sadler threw 2.2IP, 4H/2ER, 3K:1BB as he continues to tune-up for his call-up after Monday. Capellan threw 5.1IP, 5H/1ER, 2K:1BB, and Daigle took his 3rd loss of the season, giving up the game-winner in 0.2IP.
Corpus
Frisco got two runs in the 6th, providing the margin for a 3-2 win over Corpus. Collin DeLome and Mark Ori were both 2x4, with DeLome and Moresi getting the RBIs. Doug Arguello threw 3IP, 2H/1ER, 3K:1BB, while Weatherby took the loss, allowing the two runs on 4H, 4K:3BB in 4IP.
Lancaster
A 6-run first certainly helps, and the JetHawks used it to pace their way to a 14-8 win over High Desert. Steve Brown was 3x5 with 2HR/3RBI, 3 runs scored. The JetHawks also got multi-hit games from Shuck (2x4), Rosario (2x5), Gaston (2x4, 3-run homer), Weston (2x5, 1HR/3RBI), and Cabral (2x5, RBI). Tom Fairchild threw 5.2IP, 8H/7ER, 4K:2BB, and four homers allowed - but still got the win. Jose Duran and Pat Urckfitz threw 3.1IP, 2H/1ER, 6K:0BB to shut the High Desert offense down.
Lexington
The Legends gave up three in the 6th and two in the 7th in a 6-4 loss to Asheville. Albert Cartwright, Jay Austin, and Chris Jackson had two hits each. David Duncan threw 5.2IP, 6H/4R (2ER), 5K:0BB, and Michael Hacker threw 0.2IP, 1H/2R (0ER), 0K:2BB. Yep, a two-run loss, and three unearned runs on two errors (Duncan, Pellegrini).
Tri-City
And that's a 4-2 win over Vermont. Erik Castro and Rene Garcia had two hits each, J.D. Martinez hit a two-run homer, and Barry Butera and Nick Stanley provided the other RBI. Four pitchers were used - Robby Donovan threw 5IP, 7H/1ER, 1K:2BB, and it only got hairy for Mike Schurz, who threw 1IP, 4H/1ER, 1K. Dan Sarisky had 3Ks in his 2IP, and MacDonald got his 7th save of the season.

Minor League IPs
The Orioles are limiting the number of innings pitched for their young'uns. Should the Astros do the same with pitchers under 25 years of age?

The unofficial industry standard is that no young pitcher should throw more than 30 more innings than he did the previous season. It's a general rule of thumb, and one I've been tracking for about a decade. When teams violate the incremental safeguard, it's amazing how often they pay for it.
Alright, so let's take us a gander at this: Which pitchers age 25 and younger have already exceeded 30IP over 2008 totals?

2007: 102.2 IP
2008: 80 IP
2009: 147.2 IP
Felipe Paulino
2007: 131 IP
2008: 0.2 IP

It's worth noting that Paulino's IP jumped from 55 in 2005 to 126.1 in 2006. He threw 131 in 2007, and missed just about all of 2008. That's why he's listed - as a precautionary tale.

Round Rock pounded out 10 runs on 14 hits as the Express beat the Reno Aces 10-4. Reggie Abercrombie was 3x4 with 4R, a triple, and a homer. Edwin Mayonset had two hits, and 4RBI, while Saccomanno and Manzella had two hits each. Jose Capellan started the game, but gave up 4H/3ER, 1K:5BB in 3IP. Josh Muecke came in in relief, threw 3IP, 4H/1ER for the win. Chad Paronto got his 20th save.
Corpus
Corpus scored the final four runs of the game, defeating Springfield 5-2. Drew Meyer was 3x4, Collin DeLome 2x4 with 3RBI, and Wladimir Sutil also had two hits on the night. Sergio Perez threw 6IP, 6H/1ER (2 total), while Meszaros, C-Lo, and Evan Englebrook combined for 3IP, 2H/0ER, 3K:0BB.

Chris Salamida threw 2.2IP, 7H/6ER, 4K:0BB (3HR) for his first loss in Lancaster. Bryan Hallberg threw the next 5.2IP, holding the Blaze to 5H/2ER.

Or the Memphis hitting. Take your pick. Polin Trinidad gave up six (six!) homers and 9ER on 10H in 5IP. T.J. Burton had a tough time of it, as well, giving up 5ER on 8H/3BB in 1.2IP.

Yordany got two of the Express' six hits in a 5-1 loss to Albuquerque. Tommy Manzella clocked an RBI triple for the lone run. Polin Trinidad suffered his first loss at The Rock with 7IP, 9H/5ER, 5K:3BB. The big story was Albuquerque starter Charlie Haeger, who threw a complete game, striking out 12 Express batters, including John Gall's three Ks.

Lake Elsinore scored six runs in the top of the 9th to defeat Lancaster 9-5. Ronald Ramirez had three hits and 2RBI, while Koby Clemens was 2x4 with 2RBI. Jack Shuck and Marcos Cabral also had two hits on the night. Chris Hicks threw 7IP, 7H/3ER, 7K:1BB and was in line for the win until Ashton Mowdy and Chris Salamida combined for 1IP (Mowdy: three batters faced, no outs), 3H/4ER (5 total), 0K:3BB.

Eddie's Farm: July 15
Eddie's Farm goes 1-4 last night with Round Rock and Corpus off, but let's start with the AAA All-Star Game, and today we also debut a feature on the GCL Astros (because what else are you going to do? Work? It's never too early to start looking at the 2014 Astros...)

The International League All-Stars, despite giving up two runs in the 9th, held on to beat the Pacific Coast League All-Stars 6-5 last night. Bud Norris got the start and threw 2IP, 0H/0ER, 2K:0BB. Unfortunately, Yorman Bazardo got the loss, giving up 3ER on 3H in 0.2IP. /sad face.

The JetHawks got ripped 6-2 at High Desert last night, managing six hits and two errors (Ronald Ramirez and Marcos Cabral). Jack Shuck got two of the JetHawks' six hits with a double and a triple and is now hitting .323. Pitching duties were split between Bryan Hallberg (4IP, 8H/7R(5ER), 3K:4BB) and Jose Duran (4IP, 1H/0ER, 3K)

Delmarva beat Lexington yet again, this time in a 3-1 game. The Legends got four hits from Diaz, Pellegrini, Brown, and Simunic. David Duncan continued his resurgence with 6IP, 5H/2ER, 7K:1BB. After opening the season in Lancaster with an 0-9 record and 46ER in 48.2IP (8.51 ERA), Duncan has given up 14 ER in 31.1IP at Tri-City and Lexington.

Tri-City went off for 11 hits in a 10-4 win over State College. None of those hits were for extra-bases and the ValleyCats were just 5x18 with RISP, though it hardly matters when you score 10 runs on them. The rehabbing Eli Iorg was 3x5, Brandon Wikoff was 3x4, and Brian Kemp was 2x3 with a walk, and is now hitting .345. Wander Alvino threw 7IP, 4H/2ER, 4K:1BB while Justin Harper gave up 2ER in his 1IP. Mike Modica threw a scoreless 9th to lower his ERA to 0.93.

Jeremy Johnson went 5IP, 7H/4ER, 3K:2BB, while Geary went 2IP, 2H/1R (0ER) with 1K, but also two errors.

Despite taking a 6-5 lead into the bottom of the 9th, Lowell got two runs back for a 7-6 walkoff win. Brian Kemp and Russell Dixon both got two hits each, and Erik Castro hit a pinch-hit 2-run single in the 9th, with Brian Kemp knocking Castro in to take the lead. Then Pedro Gonzalez came in for the bottom of the ninth to close it out. Lowell's Christian Vazquez hit a game-tying one-out HR, and ValleyCats 3B Jhonny Medrano committed an error to let Ronald Bermudez reach first base. That's important, because Derrik Gibson then hit a popfly to CF Kemp, which would have ended the inning. But it didn't. And then Gonzalez walked the next three batters with the last walk scoring Bermudez. Game over.
Round Rock
The Express never led last night as the Sounds defeated Round Rock 5-3 in Nashville (again, couldn't go. And won't be able to go this weekend. I'm not happy.) Yordany and Abercrombie had two hits each - that's seven hits in his last 13 ABs for Yordany - and Chris Johnson hit his 4th homer of the season in the 6th inning. Jeremy Johnson went 5IP, 7H/4ER, 3K:2BB, while Geary went 2IP, 2H/1R (0ER) with 1K, but also two errors.
Corpus Christi
Andy Van Hekken and Corpus were all over Tulsa last night in a 7-1 win. Jhon Florentino was 4x5, while Jimmy Van Ostrand was 2x5 with 3RBI, and Drew Meyer was also 2x5. Drew Locke got a hit and two walks, and also drove in his 77th run of the season. AVH went 7IP, 2H/1ER, 5K:1BB while C-Lo and Danny Meszaros combined for 2IP, 1H/0ER, 1K.
Lancaster
The JetHawks scored three runs with 2 outs in the top of the 10th on Koby Clemens' three-run jack, and then held on as Rancho Cucamonga got two back in the bottom of the inning, but it obviously wasn't enough, and Lancaster won 8-7. Clemens was 2x4, and Suarez and Steele both had two hits each. Bryan Hallberg threw 4IP, 6H/2ER, 3K:3BB, while Abad threw 4.2IP, 5H/2ER with 5K. Chris Salamida got the win despite allowing 2ER in .1IP, and Jack Tilghman closed it out for his second save of the year.

Lexington broke out the offense for a 9-5 win over Savannah last night. David Duncan, who was just called up from Tri-City, got the win despite giving up 5ER in 5IP, and Henry Villar and Pat Urckfitz combined for 0ER in 4IP with 5K. Jay Austin and Ebert Rosario were 3x5 each. Albert Cartright hit a 3-run bomb in the 3rd inning, and Michael Diaz had 3RBI. Brian Pellegrini got two hits as well, as did Chris Jackson.

Round Rock
Sometime-MLBer Manny Parra shut the Express down last night 3-1 versus Nashville. The Express managed only four hits: Bogusevic, Manzella, Maysonet, and a pinch hit from Jason Smith. Mark McLemore got the start and pitched well, 6.2IP, 5H/2ER, 5K:4BB, while Geary threw a perfect 1.1IP. Daigle gave up the last run of the game.

The Hooks jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the 1st inning, and rode it out to defeat Tulsa 7-1. Multi-hit games from Wladimir Sutil, Jhon Florentino, and a 3x4 game from Drew Locke led the offense, while Colin DeLome had a two-run single. Nick Moresi hit a pinch-hit solo homer. Andy Van Hekken was El Hombre, with 6IP, 7H/1ER, 1K:2BB and McKeller and Lumsden provided three scoreless innings in relief.

Lancaster fell to Lake Elsinore last night, 11-4. A 3x4 game from Matt Weston, and a 2x3 game from Gabe Suarez provided five of the eight hits (Shuck, Steele, Clemens). Casey Hudspeth threw 5.1IP, 9H/6ER, 6K:4BB while Shane Wolf threw .1IP, 0H/3ER, 3BB (with help on the ERs from Jordan Powell.

The Legends got hammered by Augusta 9-2 last night as Brad Dydalewicz suffered his third loss of the season. Jay Austin (3x5) and Reinaldo Pestana (2x4) got five of the Legends' eight hits. Dydalewicz threw 4.1IP, 8H/6ER, 3K:2BB in the loss while Arcenio Leon gave up 3ER in 2IP.

The ValleyCats lost to Brooklyn on a walk-off 3-2 last night at the most beautiful minor-league ballpark I've ever been to (uh, that would be KeySpan Park in Brookyln). Brian Kemp did what Brian Kemp does - and that's rake - 2x4 and now hitting .351. Nick Stanley got him an RBI single for the lone RBI. David Duncan looks like he may have his mechanics worked out, throwing 7.1IP, 4H/1ER, 5K:1BB while Robby Donovan blew his first save of the year, allowing the earned run on two hits and a walk.

And Greeneville completed the 1-5 day by the minor-league affiliates by losing to Elizabethon 7-5. That said, 1st round pick Jiovanni Mier was 2x4 with his first professional home run in the 7th inning. Jose Altuve (also hitting his first homer of the season), Frank Almonte, and Luis Alvarez all were 2x4 - with Alvarez providing three RBI. Luis Cruz took the loss with 5IP, 5H/3ER, 4K:3BB. Dan Sarisky had a rough inning of it, giving up 3ER in 1IP, and A&M alum Scott Migl was the reliever of the night with 2IP, 0H/0ER.

Only Corpus and Tri-City played games last night, so let's take a look:

Big time offensive game between Corpus and San Antonio last night, with the Missions scoring three runs in the 10th to win 12-10. Drew Locke did what Drew Locke does, getting three hits, including a two-run homer, while Jimmy Van Ostrand and Jason Castro also went yard. Locke, Van Ostrand, Castro, Florentino, DeLome and Moresi each had two hits in the loss. Pitcher Casey Hudspeth had a two-run single, but went 4IP, giving up 7H/6ER, 1K:3BB. Ryan McKeller threw the only perfect inning, while Van Hekken and Meszaros each gave up a run in 2IP. Chris Salamida gave up 4H/3ER, with 1BB in the 10th to suffer the loss. He has now given up 9ER in his last 4.2IP.
