What happened?

Hm. Humphrey followed up a rough rookie season with a rougher 2010, posting a .518 OPS in 34 games. He saw his playing time diminish in August, playing in 12 games as opposed to 18 in July.

That said, Humphrey was dealing with an off-season injury, so maybe there's an alternative explanation.

Humphrey saw more time in CF (25 of 33 starts) this season, after playing primarily in LF in 2009. He had two outfield assists in 47 chances.

What went right?

Humphrey did cut down on his strikeouts from 2009, striking out in 29.9% in 2010 as opposed to 33.6% of his PAs in 2009. Still, he struck out in just under 30% of his plate appearances.

Road games. It still isn't a pretty line, but in 15 away games, Humphrey hit .237/.275/.237 - nine points above his home OPS.

What went wrong?

Hitting lefties. Last season, Humphrey posted a .588 OPS in 29ABs. This season, that dropped to .508 (.176/.243/.265) in 34ABs.

Power. Humphrey hit just one homer - a solo shot - the only one he's hit in 250 career PAs.

Not sure what the future holds for Humphrey, I'm not sure if the Astros will give him another chance at Greeneville, or send him to the GCL, or...something else. Maybe a healthy off-season's worth of work will bring him back as a different player.

Eddie's Farm: July 30

Round Rock

Oklahoma City scored three runs in the first, and then held the Express to three hits over the rest of the game for a 4-1 win. Polin Trinidad needed 110 pitches to get through 5IP, allowing 8H/4R (3ER), 3K:1BB, 2HBP. Chris Sampson, Jeff Fulchino, and Casey Daigle threw a scoreless inning each. As mentioned, nothing much going on with the offense - Shelton was 1x3 with a walk, and Kata and Duran had the other two hits. Edwin Maysonet provided the lone RBI.

Man of the Match: Uh. Chris Shelton?

Corpus Christi

Midland scored all their runs from the 6th inning on, but Corpus was able to withstand the charge for a 4-3 win. Jeremy Johnson threw 6IP, 3H/1ER, 4K:4BB, while Jared Wells (2IP, 1H/1R (0ER), 1K:1BB) and Evan Englebrook (1IP, 3H/1ER, 1K:1BB) closed out the game. Michael Affronti (3B), Jimmy Van Ostrand, and Jon Fixler (HR, 2RBI) had your multi-hit games, while Kody Kirkland was 1x2 with 2BB. David Cook provided the other RBI on a sac fly. Brett Wallace was not in the lineup.

Man of the Match: Jon Fixler

Lancaster

Despite collecting 12 hits, the JetHawks dropped 10-5 to Bakersfield. Pat Urckfitz threw 5IP, 8H/7R (6ER), 6K:2BB, 3WP with two of those runs coing courtesy of Jose Trinidad, who threw 2IP, 3H/1ER. Kyle Godfrey was as effective, allowing 2H/2ER in 2IP. Albert Cartwright is on a tear, with a 3x4 night, and Federico Hernandez was 3x4 with a triple and an RBI. Lee Cruz hit a two-run homer and added another RBI, and Brian Pellegrini was 2x3 with a walk.

Man of the Match: Albert Cartwright

Lexington

Nope. It's not a repeat, and I'm not punch-drunk with all these trade. Same score as the Lancaster game, Lexington loses 10-5, and Delmarva was up 9-1 at the end of the 3rd. Zach Grimmett took the brunt of it, allowing 9H/8ER, 2K:1BB in 2.1IP. His line wasn't helped by Colton Pitkin, who gave up three runs charged to Grimmett, but Pitkin threw 2.2IP, 6H/2R (1ER). Brad Dydalewicz gave up 3H/0ER, 2K:0BB in 3IP, and Dan Sarisky struck out two in the 9th. Jose Altuve was 2x5 with a solo homer, and Grant Hogue and Brian Kemp added two hits each. Jiovanni Mier was 0x5 with 4Ks.

Man of the Match: Jose Altuve

Tri-City

Drama! Daniel Adamson hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 11th for a walk-off 7-6 win over Lowell. Andrew Robinson threw 3.1IP, 3H/3R (1ER), Jason Chowning allowed 5H/2ER, 5K:0BB in 2.2IP, Murillo Gouvea threw two scoreless innings with four strikeouts, Jorge De Leon allowed an unearned run in 2IP (tying up the game), and Brandt Walker got the win. The unearned runs came courtesy of errors by Andrew Robinson, Mike Kvasnicka, and Oscar Figueroa. Tyler Burnett was 3x5, while Buck Afenir and Adamson had two hits and an RBI each. Adam Bailey only got one hit - but it was a grand slam in the 7th, and he added another RBI.

Man of the Match: Adam Bailey.

Greeneville

Bristol scored four in the 7th to take a 4-2 lead over Greeneville, but the Gastros answered with three in the bottom half for a 5-4 win. Mike Foltynewicz threw 4IP, 4H/0ER, 4K:1BB, while Garrett Bullock threw 1.1IP, 3H/0ER. Brian Streilein had the rough night, giving up 3H/4R (3ER) in 1IP, with Phil Rorabaugh getting the win with 1.2IP, 2H/0ER (and scoring one of Streilein's inherited runners). Ryan Cole got his 2nd save of the year. Jonathan Merritt was 2x4 with a solo homer, and Ryan Humphrey was 2x3 with a triple and 2RBI. Telvin Nash hit a solo homer, as well.

Man of the Match: Ryan Humphrey

Eddie's Farm: July 17

Round Rock

A day after combining for 29 runs, Albuquerque managed to shutout Round Rock 3-0. Andy Van Hekken allowed 10H/3ER, 4K:2BB, but kept the Isotopes to an 0x6 line w/RISP. Danny Meszaros threw a scoreless 8th in his Triple-A debut. The Express only got five hits on the night - two from Tommy Everidge, and one from Bogusevic, Vazquez (double), and Edwin Bellorin.

Man of the Match: Andy Van Hekken

Corpus

RALLY! Corpus scores three in the eighth for a 4-2 win. Doug Arguello threw 5IP, 8H/2ER, 1K:4BB in the start. The bullpen held Frisco to 0H/2BB over the final four innings. Matt Nevarez took the win with two scoreless innings, and Jeilen Peguero and Evan Englebrook also threw scoreless innings to close it out. Freddy Parejo was 2x4 with 2RBI, and Jon Gaston was 2x3 with a walk. Jack Shuck got on base twice via hit and walk, and J.D. Martinez hit a two-out, go-ahead two-run triple in the eighth.

Man of the Match: I'm sorry, it's going to J.D. Martinez again.

Lancaster

Ross Seaton struggled again as San Jose beat Lancaster 7-5. Seaton allowed 10H/6ER in 3IP, with 3K:0BB and 3HR. Edwin Walker allowed 3H/0ER, 2K:3BB in 4IP of relief, while Brian Wabick allowed a run in IP, and Kyle Godfrey threw a perfect 9th. Brian Pellegrini and Barry Butera each hit two run homers and Lee Cruz hit a solo shot, meaning that all five JetHawk runs came by the long ball. Brandon Wikoff was 2x3, and John Curtis was on base twice with a hit and drawing the only walk of the game.

Man of the Match: Barry Butera.

Lexington

Another rough start for Brad Dydalewicz and the Legends pitching staff leads to a 15-4 win for Hickory. Dydalewicz allowed 8H/10ER, with 2K:8BB (eight walks, just in case you were skimming) for 16 baserunners in 4IP. Mike Schurz allowed two of those runs with his own performance - 2.2IP, 6H/5ER, 3K:1BB. Dan Sarisky threw 1.1IP, 1H/0ER and Colton Pitkin threw a perfect 9th. Jake Goebbert was 3x4 with a double and a homer, and Altuve, Hinze (RBI), Meyer (RBI), and Hogue got the other hits. Jiovanni Mier was pinch-hit for in the 8th after an 0x3 day.

Man of the Match: Jake Goebbert

Tri-City

Brooklyn held Tri-City to four hits in an 8-0 shutout over the ValleyCats. David Martinez allowed 8H/5R (3ER), 1K:1BB; Jason Chowning allowed 2H/1ER (and two of Martinez' runs) in 1.1IP. Alex Sogard allowed 5H/2ER, 2K:0BB and Mike Ness got the final out of the game. The ValleyCats committed almost as many errors (3) as they got hits (4). Errors by Kvasnicka, Enrique Hernandez, and Wilton Infante led to two unearned runs. Tyler Burnett (double, BB), Ben Heath, Dan Adamson, and Wilton Infante provided your hits.

Man of the Match: Tyler Burnett.

Greeneville

Doubleheader with Bluefield...

Game 1: Bluefield gets six in the top of the first, and then holds on for a 9-6 win. Ruben Alaniz allowed 5H/6ER, 0K:2BB in 0.2IP; Garrett Bullock struck out six, walked one, and allowed three hits (one of Alaniz' runs) in 3.1IP, and Paul Gerrish allowed 2H/3R (1ER), 2K:2BB in 3IP. Bryce Lane and Hector Rodriguez were each 2x3; Ricardo Garcia, Jonathan Merritt, Emilio King, Ryan Humphrey (HR), and Rodriguez provided your RBI. Alaniz has allowed 16ER in his last 3.1IP - having allowed 2ER in his first 16IP.

Man of the Match: Garrett Bullock

Game 2: Once again, Bluefield got out to a 6-0 lead, and despite a late run, Greeneville lost 6-3. Jeiler Castillo allowed 4H/3R (2ER), Phil Rorabaugh was charged with three unearned runs in 1IP, and Justin Harper walked three, but didn't allow a hit in 2IP. Hector Rodriguez' two errors, and one from Rorabaugh led to four unearned runs. The six Gastros hits were spread out over six players, with Jonathan Merritt (3B) and Ryan Humphrey (2RBI) standing out. Our Boy Bubby Williams - recipient of the 2nd Annual Astros County Adopt-a-Player contest - was 0x2 with a walk and a run.

Man of the Match: Ryan Humphrey.

GCL Astros

The GCL Marlins got themselves a walk-off in the 11th for a 3-2 win over the GCL Astros. Francis Ramirez allowed 1H/0ER, 1K:3BB in 3IP; Matison Smith gave up 6H/2R (1ER) in 4IP. Recently-demoted B.J. Hagen took the loss with 3H/1R (0ER), 0K:2BB in 3.1IP with Pedro Gomez facing one batter, and ending the game with a throwing error by 2B Josh Magee that scored Yefri Perez. Jordan Scott had your only multi-hit game (2x4, BB), and Jose Vargas was 0x5 with 2RBI and an outfield assist (nailing Lopez at home in the 7th).

Man of the Match: Jose Vargas.

Greeneville kicks it off tomorrow night

Nice article by Wayne Phillips in the Greeneville Sun about the 2010 GAstros.

Manager Ed Romero:
"We've worked out here only twice. Basically we have a group of guys that are hungry. Some have trained (in Florida) for three months. The majority have been down there. They are well-trained. Then we got some good talent from the draft."

Catcher Bubby Williams:
"They've brought older guys to Greeneville this year. The (Danville) Braves and the (Elizabethton) Twins always bring older guys to this league. I think we're stronger. I know I hit the weight room hard and I've matured some."

Outfielder Ryan Humphrey, who is returning from hip surgery in March:
"I'm not 100 percent yet, but I'm ready to get back out there. This team has good chemistry. There are more guys here out of college this year ... more maturity it seems."

Humphrey spent all of his fielding time in the outfield - 30 games in LF and 12 in CF, committing four errors in 74 chances for a .946 Fld%, with one outfield assist.

This wasn't a pretty season by any means, but a rough July tanked Humphrey's numbers (going 7x43 with 17Ks). Still, that K:BB ratio is going to need to get better.

Citizen Steve, what say you on Ryan Humphrey?
Solid fielder but not much with the bat. Good athlete but not remarkable.

Let's hope for a good off-season/2010 for Ryan.

Bray Day: Episode 5

Aaron Bray was the 27th round draft pick for the Astros in last June's amateur draft. He was also the winner of the Astros County Adopt-a-Player contest. Each week, Aaron will write a column for Astros County detailing his off-season. Check the sidebar for archives.

Astro Fans, Hope all is well. I don't know if many of you are following the playoffs, but there are some wild finishes. Playoff baseball is the best time of the year. My roommate just got done reading to me about Manny taking a shower while the game was going on last night as it looked like the Dodgers had a chance to win. If Manny is involved in the story you know you will get a good laugh out of it. School is going well, before I know it the semester will be over and I will be heading to Florida. Which I cannot wait for.

What was your experience showing up in Greeneville on your first day? What was your transition from "drafted player" to "professional baseball player" like?

I showed up to Greeneville the day before our due date. I went over to the stadium and did not see anyone. I went to our hotel that we were living in and checked in, met two players and then went to my room. I sat in the room all day, watched a storm come right through Greeneville through the window. Around 11 o'clock I turned in and 30 minutes later I was up again, and my roommate (Ryan Humphrey, 15th Round) had arrived. He moved in, then I went back to sleep. I was still excited and nervous at the same time about what the next day would bring.

Well, when I got drafted it was more of a mentality of, "Man, I just got drafted. Not many people get to experience that." The transition went from dream to reality. In the first couple of days when we were there we had meetings with front office personnel. That's when you find out how cut throat this business is. Being drafted is forever, but playing professional baseball as a career is not for everyone.

Hope you all have a great week!!!
Aaron Bray

Eddie's Farm: July 23

Round Rock
Yordany got two of the Express' six hits in a 5-1 loss to Albuquerque. Tommy Manzella clocked an RBI triple for the lone run. Polin Trinidad suffered his first loss at The Rock with 7IP, 9H/5ER, 5K:3BB. The big story was Albuquerque starter Charlie Haeger, who threw a complete game, striking out 12 Express batters, including John Gall's three Ks.

Lancaster
Lake Elsinore scored six runs in the top of the 9th to defeat Lancaster 9-5. Ronald Ramirez had three hits and 2RBI, while Koby Clemens was 2x4 with 2RBI. Jack Shuck and Marcos Cabral also had two hits on the night. Chris Hicks threw 7IP, 7H/3ER, 7K:1BB and was in line for the win until Ashton Mowdy and Chris Salamida combined for 1IP (Mowdy: three batters faced, no outs), 3H/4ER (5 total), 0K:3BB.

Lexington
G1: Lexington gets a walk-off win over Lake County 2-1. Small-balling it, the Legends only got two hits, but drew four walks on the night, with Chris Jackson's RBI single scoring Jorge de Leon, who was running for Reinaldo Pestana (who reached on an error) providing the GWH. David Duncan pitched brilliantly again, scattering 7H/1ER over 7IP with 7Ks. Kyle Godfrey threw a scoreless 8th for the win.

G2: Not as fun. Lake County scored twice in the top of the 7th, Lexington got one back, but still lost 3-2. Andrew Simunic got two hits and Brian Pellegrini hit a solo homer while Jeff Hulett's RBI double in the 9th came up just short. Robert Bono threw 5.1IP, 7H/2ER, 2K:2BB, but two errors provided an unearned run - and a loss.

Tri-City
Well. Oneonta pounded out 13 runs on 19 hits (nine for extra bases) for a 13-2 win over Tri-City. Brandon Wikoff and Renzo Tello had two hits, with Tello providing both RBI. Brandt Walker: 4IP, 9H/6ER, 4K:1BB; Antonio Noguera: 3IP, 5H/3ER, 3K:0BB: Scott Migl: 2IP, 5H/3ER, 2K:4BB.

GCL Astros
The GCL Astros recorded their 8th win of the season with an 8-7 win in 10 innings. Luis Bryan was 4x6 with 3RBI, Kody Hinze was 3x5, including a 2-run 10th inning shot, as the Gastros rapped out 16 hits. 2nd round pick Tanner Bushue threw 5IP, 3H/1ER, 6K:1BB in the ND. Mike Schurz got a blown save and a win with 1.2IP, 2H/2ER, 0K:2BB.

Eddie's Farm: June 29

Round Rock
Jeremy Johnson threw 8IP, 7H/1ER, 3K:1BB to get his 5th win of the season in a 3-2 win over the Iowa Cubs. Five of the Express' six hits came from 6-7-8 in the order, with Yordany and Spann getting two each and Jeremy Johnson (cliche alert) helping his own cause with an RBI single.

Corpus
A late inning rally fell short as the Hooks fell 5-4 to Frisco. Mitch Einertson and Felix Molina had two hits each, while Jhon Florentino had a two-run single in the 8th. Brad James went 6IP, 6H/1ER, 4K:2BB and C-Lo got tagged up for his first runs allowed in Double-A with .1IP, 1H/4R (2ER), 0K:3BB in the 7th inning. Ryan McKeller came in for the final five outs, striking out four.

Lancaster
A day after getting whooped 18-2, Lancaster's pitching staff held it together a bit better, but still lost, 6-5, to Stockton. Craig Corrado was 3x4, Jonathan Fixler 2x4, and T.J. Steele hit a 2-run homer in a 4-run third inning. Pitcher Bryan Hallberg went 3.2IP, 9H/6ER, 4K:3BB while Shane Wolf and Fernando Abad threw 4.1 scoreless innings.

Lexington
Off.

Tri-City
