This is Alvino's fourth season in the Astros' organization, and his second in the States, pitching mainly as a reliever (1 start, 14 games) in 2008. In 2009, he did post the lowest WHIP of this career, though his K/9 ratio was down for the second straight year, and his BB/9 ratio jumping from 1.5 to 3.7. In Greeneville, Alvino walked seven batters (in 192 faced) all season long. For that to jump to 29 (in 309 BF) is alarming, as is the fact that he gives up more flyball outs than groundouts. His IP jumped 29.1 innings (again, the reliever-starter change will do that), just enough to keep him in the Verducci Zone. Where Alvino needs to work is against LHBs (.317 against, 18K:15BB), and with the bases empty, strangely. Six of the eight homers Alvino allowed came with the bases empty, as well as 20 of his 29 walks.

Round Rock
Round Rock beat Albuquerque again, this time 4-2, as more Express players jockey for a call-up, even if it's just sitting on the bench. Which makes me wonder, would the Astros prefer the prospects go home and play Halo all day, waiting for Spring Training, or learn some aspects of the Major-League lifestyle? Anyhow, Tommy Manzella hit a two-run shot in the 6th, while Jason Smith added a solo homer. Polin Trinidad threw 7.2IP, 10H/2ER, 9K:0BB, and Armando Benitez got his first save for The Rock.
Corpus
Brutal loss for the Hooks, losing on a walk-off homer in the bottom of the 11th, 1-0. Corpus only managed three hits (Sutil, DeLome, and Moresi), while DeLome and Florentino struck out four times each. Francisco Abad threw 6IP, 1H/0ER, 5K:1BB while Erick Abrew threw 4IP, 4H/0ER, 7K:1BB. Ryan McKeller took the loss, giving up the homer.

Asheville scored four times in the bottom of the 8th to provide the margin in a 6-2 win over Lexington. Jay Austin was 2x4 with two doubles and an RBI. Ross Seaton threw 6IP, 4H/2ER, 5K:3BB while Brian Wabick got the loss with 2IP, 6H/4ER, 2K:1BB.

Robby Donovan took the loss with 2.1IP, 3H/4R (2ER), 1K:1BB. Brendan Stines threw 2.1IP, 3H/2ER, 2K:5BB. Kirk Clark had a scoreless 1.1IP, and David Berner came in for 1IP, 4H/4R (1ER). Yep. Two errors (De Leon, Martinez) led to five unearned runs.
Game 2: And then Tri-City scored 15 runs in a 15-5 win, scoring seven in the first alone. Jhonny Medrano was 3x4 with 5RBI, Erik Castro was 3x4 with a two-run homer and 3RBI total. J.D. Martinez was 2x2 with an RBI. Wander Alvino got the win with 5IP, 8H/5ER, 1K:5BB (hard to lose a game when you're spotted seven runs). Mike Modica and J.B. MacDonald threw a scoreless inning each.

Round Rock
Memphis was all over the Express in a 6-1 win yesterday, as seven of the Redbirds' 13 hits were for extra-bases. The Express had seven hits, four coming from Brian Esposito (2x3) and Pudge-returnee Jose Vallejo (2x4 - two doubles), who got the start at 2B. Polin Trinidad's record dropped to 5-4, with 6.1IP, 7H/4ER, 3K:3BB. Daigle threw 1.2IP scoreless, and Chad Paronto gave up 2ER in 1IP on 4H and 1BB to raise his ERA to 1.66. And the Express are eliminated from the playoffs.
Corpus
Hopefully this trend of Astros players getting beat by Cardinals players ends here, as Springfield beat Corpus 3-1. Drwe Locke was 2x4, and Felix Molina had the only other Hooks hit - a solo homer. Wilton Lopez threw 7IP, 5H/3ER, 4K:0BB, and Danny Meszaros closed it out with 1IP, 1H, 1K.

The JetHawks scored five runs in the first and tacked an insurance run on in the 7th, beating Visalia 7-5. Lancaster got multi-hit games from Rosario (2x4, 1 RBI), Clemens (2x4, now hitting .344), and Cabral (2x3, 1HR, 3RBI). Jon Gaston also provided a 2-run double. One thing's for sure, park-aided or not (this game was at home), five JetHawks' starters from Sunday were hitting .290+ at game's end. Leandro Cespedes threw 5.2IP, 8H/4ER, 6K:4BB. Francisco Abad threw 3.1IP, 2H/0ER, 5K:1BB in relief.

The Legends got off to a 5-0 lead, and cruised to defeat Greensboro 5-2. Brandon Wikoff and Brian Pellegrini had two hits and an RBI each. Kyle Greenwalt threw 6IP, 5H/2ER, 1K:0BB, while Kirkland Rivers and Kyle Godfrey combined for 3IP, 0H, 1K:1BB in relief.

Shortened game in anticipation of a double-header (Game 2 was suspended), Vermont took Game 1 3-0. The only three hits for the ValleyCats came from Barry Butera, Erik Castro, and Rene Garcia. Nick Stanley was the only ValleyCat to get on base twice, with two walks. Wander Alvino threw 5IP, 1H/1ER, 5K:3BB, while Mike Modica threw 0.2IP, 0H/1ER, 1K:1BB, and Kirk Clark gave up 3H/1ER in 1.1IP.

It all kind of fell apart in the 6th, as Elizabethton, with a 1-0 lead, then proceeded to score five runs in the 6th and three in the 7th, on their way to a 9-1 win. Every Elizabethton...Elizabeth had one hit. The Gastros only collected four hits - but three of 'em came courtesy of Our Boy Aaron Bray who had two doubles and a single. Bray now had four multi-hit games in his last five outings, with an average of .526 and an OBP of .632 since August 18. He's hitting .364 in his last ten games. Carlos Quevedo went 5IP, 4H/2ER (5R total), 5K:2BB, Scott Migl threw 1.2IP, 2H/3ER, 1K:4BB, and Jeiler Castillo went 2.1IP, 3H/1ER, 0K:1BB in relief.

Eddie's Farm: August 9
I'm trying to remember a day in which the minor-leaguers had a winning record for the day. That day was yesterday, as teams from Greeneville to Round Rock went 4-3.
Round Rock
Erick Abreu improved his age to 26, and his record to 2-0, as the Express beat Portland 6-4. Lou Santangelo was 2x4, and the other seven hits were scattered among seven other Expressists. Mark Saccomanno was 1x4 with 2RBI, Chris Johnson had a sac fly, and Tommy Manzella walked three times. Abrew threw 6IP, 5H/4ER, 4K:1BB while Gervacio, Daigle, and Paronto threw 3IP, 3H/0ER, 5K:1BB in relief.
Corpus Christi
Corpus scored two runs in the bottom of the 7th, but it wasn't enough as Midland won 3-2. Sutil and Florentino had two-hit games, with Sutil and Felix Molina getting the RBIs. Sergio Perez took the loss, throwing 6IP, 6H/3ER, 4K:0BB, mainly because all three Midland runs came on homers. C-Lo threw 2IP, 0H/0ER to lower his Double-A ERA to 3.00.

Chris Salamida threw 6.1IP, 6H/4ER, 4K:2BB, while Francisco Abad took the loss with a 3ER, three-out performance. Jordan Powell also gave up 2ER in 0.2IP.

The Legends held off a late Asheville charge and won 7-6. Michael Diaz was 3x4 with a double and a triple, Brian Pellegrini and Steve Brown had two hits each - Brown had three RBI on a 2-run single and a solo homer. David Duncan threw 6IP, 8H/4ER, 5K:1BB.

Well, almost. Tri-City had a 2-0 lead in the sixth, but a 4-run inning will end that pretty quickly, and Williamsport emerged victorious 6-2. Barry Butera had two hits, Sean Barksdale hit a double, and J.D. Martinez hit his 4th homer of the season. Wander Alvino threw 6IP, 7H/4ER, and gave up 2HR in the loss.

Game 1: Jose Altuve was 3x4 with two doubles, Jiovanni Mier was 2x4, and Jonathan Meyer was 2x2 (each had an RBI). Juri Perez threw 5.2IP, 4H/1ER, 6K:3BB to improve to 3-0 and Travis Smink got his 5th save of the year in a 6-2 win.
Game 2: The Gastros took both games, this one with a 5-3 win, thanks mostly to Jonathan Meyer's first two professional homers, accounting for three of the Gastros' runs. Grant Hogue was 2x3 with a triple. Luis Cruz threw 4IP, 3H/2ER, 3K:2BB and Joan Belliard got the win with 3IP, 2H/0ER. The pitching staff induced four GIDPs, and got 13 groundball outs, compared to two flyball outs. Our boy Aaron Bray was not in the lineup in either game.

Eddie's Farm - July 28

Perhaps distracted by Bud Norris' call-up, Memphis proceeded to kick the piss out of Round Rock, 14-5. Mark Saccomanno was 2x4 with a solo homer. But the story was the Express pitching. Or the Memphis hitting. Take your pick. Polin Trinidad gave up six (six!) homers and 9ER on 10H in 5IP. T.J. Burton had a tough time of it, as well, giving up 5ER on 8H/3BB in 1.2IP.

Drew Meyer and Nick Moresi were 2x4 and Collin DeLome hit a 2-run homer, but it wasn't enough as San Antonio beat Corpus 5-4. Brad James dropped his record to 2-8 with 7IP, 8H/5ER, 3K:3BB. C-Lo pitched a scoreless 8th, and Charlie Weatherby III threw a scoreless 9th.

The ValleyCats have won three straight games with a 9-3 win over Kason Gabbard and the Lowell Spinners. J.D. Martinez was 5x5 with 2RBI and Barry Butera got himself two hits on the win. Wander Alvino threw 6IP, 6H/1ER, 3K:2BB, while Antonio Noguera gave up 2ER in 0.2IP. Robby Donovan struck out four batters in 2.1 scoreless innings for his third save of the season.
GCL Astros
The GCL Astros lost to the GCL Mets 10-4. Emilio King was 3x3 with a double and a triple. Mark Jones gave up 2ER (though 5 total) in 1.2IP. 19-year old Italian pitcher Andrea Lucati (with whom I'm hoping we can speak) gave up 4H/2ER in 3.1IP of relief.
