Thursday Morning Hot Links

*The Masked Marvel tried to calm your nerves about 2017.

*Don't miss the case for voiding the last two years of Jose Altuve's contract. Or the 2017 payroll breakdown.

*Danny Worth elected free agency in the last week and presumably will not be returning to the Astros organization.

Worth absolutely killed it in Fresno to the tune of .330/.431/.525 with 72K:54BB. But in 16 games for Houston (40 PAs) Worth hit .179/200/.231 while seeing time at 2B, 3B, SS, and DH at the height of the Astros' injury crisis.

*Astros prospect Ramon Laureano went 3x5 with a single, double, triple and an RBI in yesterday's Arizona Fall League game for Glendale. On October 11 Garrett Stubbs hit a homer for Glendale; Rogelio Armenteros threw 1.1IP, 3H/2ER, 0K:1BB. Francis Martes is scheduled to start today.

*Not for nothing, but the Blue Jays are planning on offering impending free agent Edwin Encarnacion a qualifying offer - should such a thing still exist by the beginning of 2017. Heyman reports Encarnacion will be looking for at least a four-year deal, though the Blue Jays would prefer to offer three years. He'll be in his Age 34 season in 2017 and posted an .886 OPS this season after four straight .900+ OPS seasons. (My dumb brain would happily give Encarnacion 4yrs/$90m).

*Four months after the Padres' managing partner Peter Seidler said he expected president/CEO Mike Dee to be around for a long time, Dee is out.

*The history of Clayton Kershaw's postseason bullpens. Spoiler: 53% of the runners his bullpen inherited scored. That's not all on Kershaw.

*Vice Sports: The Dodgers are still alive because things like reason and logic don't exist in the playoffs.

Wednesday Morning Hot Links

*I actually can't believe the Astros are back at .500. Last night's walk-off win put the Astros at 36-36, the first time they've been at .500 since 1-1. The Masked Marvel has your recap.

*The Rangers lost to the Reds, the Mariners lost to the Tigers, and the A's beat the Brewers. The division looks as such:

*North Oak Cliff: -
*Seattle: -9.5
*Houston: -10
*Anaheim: -14.5
*Oakland: -16

1st WC: -4
2nd WC: -3

*FanGraphs puts the Astros' division odds at 15.3% and 24.8% to win the Wild Card.

*Carlos Correa just recorded his league-leading third walk-off hit. The Astros scored three runs and Correa drove them all in. Correa:
I want to be in that situation every day. To feel that pressure, that drives me. I feel comfortable in that situation.

Since the beginning of the Arizona series on May 30, Correa is hitting .313/.439/.567. Correa has 6RBI in his last two games, having recorded 6RBI total from June 1-June 19.

*George Springer's top speed on his 9th inning stolen base was 20.2mph.

*The Astros did it to Huston Street again. Alden Gonzalez wrote about Street and "the process."

*Now that the Astros are back to .500, Richard Justice has decided to put down the shiny new Rangers and write about the Astros. Hinch:
If you had told me we'd be .500 on this date, I would have said we should be better. I want to keep it in proper perspective...I wasn't encouraging a couple of times.

McHugh:
I think all of us are excited. We have expectations of ourselves. It's plain and simple. We're starting to finally put complete games together and maybe live up to those expectations a little bit.

*Danny Worth fixed his swing by obsessively watching video and replicating other dudes' swings.

*Luis Valbuena's turnaround started with a homer off lefty Dana Eveland in Tampa.

*Surprise! More people are going to Astros games this season.

*A.J. Reed was 2x4 with a double and an RBI in Fresno's win last night. In his last six games he's 11x26 with two homers and 6RBI.

*Edison Frias and Evan Grills have been named Texas League All-Star replacements, and they will join Alex Bregman, Derek Fisher, Teoscar Hernandez, J.D. Davis, David Paulino, and Keegan Yuhl on the South Squad roster.

*Bregman was hit in the head by a pitch two nights ago but walked off under his own power. Luhnow addressed Bregman's development, and it's worth noting that with Correa going nowhere and Valbuena heating up, he's going to spend more time in the minors.

*Quad Cities' Jose Hernandez was named the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week.

*2nd Round pick Ronnie Dawson hit his first pro homer last night, but Brooklyn scored eight unanswered runs in a Tri-City loss.

*Roy Oswalt is among a number of pro athletes who were defrauded out of millions of dollars.

Astros to call up Danny Worth

According to Brian McTaggart the Astros are planning on calling up Fresno's Danny Worth today.

As Jake Kaplan notes, the Astros will face Cardinals lefty Jaime Garcia tonight, and then two lefties this weekend against the Reds.

Worth has a career .230/.293/.295 major-league slash line in 135 games for Detroit from 2010-2014, but he has been straight killing it for Fresno, hitting .340/.449/.550 with 43K:37BB in 54 games this season.

Against lefties at Fresno this year Worth is hitting .396/.467/.717, with eight extra-base hits in 60 plate appearances.

Of course, the question is who will be the corresponding move. The obvious answer - since Worth is primarily an infielder - will be Tyler White, who is hitting .211/.296/.386. But he has struggled mightily since he went Babe Ruth on the AL in the first couple weeks of the season. In 38 games since April 14, White is hitting .153/.245/.277 with 38K:16BB.

Another option would be to move Correa to the DL, since it would fit the Astros M.O. to say they expect him back tonight and then put him on the 60-Day DL, shipping him to Weiland Island.

Maybe the option is to send Devenski down for more regular work, or to send Tony Kemp down. Let's do what the internet does best and just wait and see.

Wednesday Morning Hot Links

You have to be kidding me. The Astros lost *another* one-run game to the Rangers. They are 0-8 against Lower Oklahoma City, and five of those losses have been by 1-run. The Rangers are 21-6 against the Astros since the beginning of the 2015 season. Twelve of those wins have been by a margin of 1-2 runs. I do not understand any of this and actually kind of find it logically impossible that a team can win that many close games against another team. Such is the damage to my soul that I'm starting to look at it like a science experiment, and not as though my psyche is completely withering away.

*Springer/Altuve/Correa/Gattis combined to go 0x13.

*The Astros w/RISP: 3x9; The Rangers w/RISP: 0x6. This is exactly the kind of devil magic I don't understand.

*After going 20-8 in 2015, Dallas Keuchel is now 3-8 on the 2016 season. For whatever reason, A.J. Hinch decided to send Keuchel back out in the 8th inning to face the Rangers' lineup for a 4th time. He had only faced batters for a 4th time in a start in 14 PAs all season, but those 14 PAs resulted in an .896 OPS-against, and that's before last night because B-Ref hasn't updated yet.

Keuchel's OPS-against, by number of times through the lineup:
1st: .809
2nd: .781
3rd: .706
4th: .896

*But don't worry! Keuchel feels better!
That's probably the best I've felt all year. I was able to get some quality off-speed over for strikes early and get them off the fastball. But I can't take that pitch (to Desmond) back. It had been working for me all night, and that's been a good pitch for me the last few starts. Maybe throw it an inch out more? But you've got to give credit to Desmond. This park flies. He got it up in the air and it just cleared the fence.

*Apparently Handsome Jake Marisnick missed the sign for the safety squeeze when he hit the ball into the only place he could ground into a double play to end the 7th.

*Jose Altuve has a comfortable lead to start the All-Star Game. Somehow - and this is why we have an Electoral College - George Springer isn't considered one of the 15 best outfielders in the American League. Being an All-Star isn't the foremost thing on Springer's mind.

*Hinch spent some time talking to McTaggart about Fresno's Danny Worth, and it sounds like he might be a candidate to come up to Houston. Worth - who just won PCL's Player of the Month - is hitting .345/.452/.571 with 38K:34BB.

*It's worth mentioning that the Chronicle's coverage of this series has been absolutely God-awful.

*Tim Lincecum's next start will come at Fresno for the Salt Lake City Bees.

*The Blue Jays DFA'd Matt Dominguez.

PreStros Morning Report: April 7

*Affiliates go

Fresno (0-1)

Fresno opened up their Triple-A title defense at Las Vegas last night. The Grizzlies had a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th but Las Vegas scored the final four runs of the game, winning 6-4 on a 2-run walkoff home run by former Astros great Marc Krauss.

Brad Peacock gave up 2H/2ER, 5K:2BB in 5IP and every Fresno reliever allowed one earned run. Juan Minaya allowed the walk-off home run.

Danny Worth was 2x4 with a triple, home run, and 2RBI. Colin Moran had an RBI single, Jon Kemmer added a triple, and Tyler Heineman and Andrew Aplin each added a hit and a walk. Jon Singleton was 0x4 with 2K. A.J. Reed was 0x3 with two walks and an RBI.

Man of the Match: Danny Worth

Corpus (1-0)

Joe Musgrove and Keegan Yuhl shut down the Tulsa Drillers in a 2-0 Opening Night Corpus Christi win. Musgrove threw 5IP, 1H/0ER, 4K:0BB and Yuhl followed that up with 4IP, 1H/0ER, 3K:0BB to close out the game.

Mott Hyde was responsible for the offense, going 2x2 with a walk, home run, and both RBI. Derek Fisher was 2x4 while a rehabbing Evan Gattis went 1x4 with a double from the DH spot. Conrad Gregor added a double, as well.

Man of the Match: Musgrove, Yuhl, and Hyde.

Lancaster (0-1)

The JetHawks were tied with San Jose 2-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th when a two-out hit gave San Jose a 4-2 lead. The JetHawks rallied to get one back in the top of the 9th, but stranded the tying run on 2nd, losing 4-3.

Akeem Bostick allowed 6H/1ER, 0K:1BB in 3IP; Dean Deetz allowed 3H/1ER, 3K:0BB in 3.1IP, and Kevin Comer was tagged with the loss with 1.2IP, 2H/2ER, 3K:2BB.

Jason Martin (2B, RBI) and Jose Fernandez (SB) each had two hits; Drew Ferguson, Bryan Muniz, and Kristian Trompiz had a hit each. The JetHawks stole four bases but struck out 12 times, walked once, and committed four errors.

Man of the Match: Uhh. Jason Martin?

Quad Cities (0-1)

Well. Quad Cities never led in the game, but it was manageable...up to a point. Down 6-1, the River Bandits got a run back in the top of the 8th before surrendering six runs to Cedar Rapids in the bottom of the 8th on their way to a 12-4 opening night loss.

Rogelio Armenteros pitched well: 4IP, 5H/2R (0ER), 5K:0BB. Ryan Deemes allowed 1H/0ER, 1K:2BB in 1IP; Alex Winkelman gave up 6H/6ER, 1K:3BB in 2.1IP of work and Adam Whitt allowed 3H/4ER, 0K:1BB.

Johnny Sewald was 1x4 with a walk, 3RBI, and two stolen bases. Catcher Anthony Hermelyn went 2x2 with a double and two walks; Daz Cameron was 0x3 with two walks and a stolen base. Kyle Tucker was 1x4 with a walk and an RBI. Brooks Marlow added a hit and a walk.

Man of the Match: Johnny Sewald

Tuesday Morning Hot Links

First up: I am pleased to announce that Astros County is starting a new media venture with writer/comedian Pat McLellan and comedian John Wessling. This new podcast - which will also feature special guests to be revealed later - will be called Lima Time Time and will also include us "calling" an Astros game on the reg on Rabble.tv. So get excited, because this is happening. #LimaTimeTime

The Astros beat the Yankees 1-0 yesterday to improve to 5-1 on the Spring. Mike Fiers threw two scoreless innings, as have Scott Feldman and Doug Fister. Today at 12:05pm Central Doug Fister takes the mound for the second time to face the Nationals.

*Top story of the morning - other than that one - is that the Astros and A.J. Hinch agreed to a revised contract this offseason. Details in the Chron are sketchy, but it seems as though there is more guaranteed money through at least 2018. Luhnow:
We're committed to A.J., and he's committed to us. We don't comment on contracts.

*Danny Worth probably won't make the Opening Day roster, but his versatility and demeanor give him value (Astros.com). And he throws a mean knuckleball (Chron).

*Mike F. Fiers has been working on a slider. (Astros.com)

*A.J. Hinch said that whoever ends up as the SP5 won't be influenced by who is more suited for long relief. (Evan Drellich). Mike Fiers isn't worried (Chron).

*Jon Singleton is David Schoenfield's pick for the player who needs to have a breakout season for the Astros to truly contend (ESPN).

*Evan Gattis (hernia) hit 25 overhand pitches this morning and is expected to take BP tomorrow pending a doctor's checkup today (Brian McTaggart).

*Relevant to the Astros and Dallas Keuchel: the Cubs and Jake Arrieta both want an extension, but disagree on the number of years (SB Nation).

*The recent history of teams like the Royals (FanGraphs).

*10-year old Landis Sims was born without hands or lower legs. He took BP with the Yankees yesterday (ESPN).

*How hockey is helping the Czech Republic national baseball team rise up the rankings. (Fox Sports)

*Four French designers are trying to build the ultimate soccer almanac (Vice Sports)

Before you go: this gif of historical home run leaders is mesmerizing.

Wednesday Morning Hot Links

*Here's an expanded story on Evan Gattis working with a personal trainer and losing 18 pounds this offseason in part to be able to return to catching part-time without putting strain on his knees, as well as playing some LF and 1B.
Catching's an option, playing a little left is an option, maybe taking ground balls is an option. I'm not really sure yet. I think being mobile, lighter and maintaining strength and kind of working on some unbalances will help me be a little more versatile.

*The Astros officially announced the signings of Wandy Rodriguez, Edwar Cabrera, and infielder Danny Worth to minor league contracts with invitations to Spring Training. Worth spent all of 2015 with Arizona at Triple-A Reno where he hit .314, playing mostly shortstop but seeing some time at 2B and 3B. There will be 60 players at Spring Training - 30 pitchers and 30 position players.

*It's a big Spring Training for Max Stassi, who could make the Opening Day roster for the first time in his career.
It's a little bit different this time with a good chance to break with the club. I'm really excited just to get down there to start getting better relationships with all my pitchers.

*Delaware native Brett Oberholtzer was pretty excited about getting traded to the Phillies.
I grew up a Phillies fan and went to games at the Vet and the Bank with my dad, so getting that call was a great moment...That phone call was a moment to put in the memory bank and say I'm a Philadelphia Phillie.

*Former Astro LJ Hoes sent a very sad tweet after getting DFA'd by the Orioles.
