*The big news of the day was the Astros placing Charlie Morton on the 1000-day DL with a lat strain. Jordan Jankowski has been recalled from Fresno and Mike Fiers will now rejoin the rotation and take Morton's spot. Morton:
I just didn't feel right. Went and got it checked out and it was a little more serious than we thought.
Morton won't throw anything for at least a week, and is looking at a long process before coming back to the rotation. A lat strain typically means a three-month layoff period.
*Jankowski only returned to Fresno on Saturday night, and yesterday went from Fresno to Minnesota.
The Astros are going to roll with a Keuchel/McCullers/Peacock/Musgrove/Fiers rotation. And there aren't many internal options to do anything about that. More on that later today.
*The Astros enjoyed a 6-run 2nd inning on their way to an 8-4 win over Baltimore, completing the sweep. The six runs in an inning tie a season-high, they also put up a 6-run 1st inning once this season, and it erased an early 3-0 Baltimore lead - one they would never regain. Hinch:
The explosive inning we had in the second is obviously the huge difference in the game. Obviously, it's huge to see, not just to pick up Lance, but just continue to play pretty exceptional baseball.
*2nd inning recap: Single, Walk, Strikeout (Wild Pitch), Double, Double, Groundout, Home Run, Triple, Single, Groundout.
*Erasing that early 3-0 deficit means the Astros have come from behind in 18 of their 35 wins. A quarter of the Astros' season losses came on this last 10-game homestand.
*Sitting at 19-7 in the month of May, the Astros surpassed the 2016 team's record for wins in a calendar month, and have a couple of chances to win 20 games in a month for the first time since August 2008 (21-9) - the Hurricane Ike season.
*George Springer hit seven homers in his first 14 games, then went 19 games without hitting one out of the park, then hit two against the Yankees on Sunday Night Baseball, then went ten more games without a homer, and now has homered in consecutive games for the second time this season. Springer raised his OPS from .744 to .786 in the series against the Orioles.
*Carlos Beltran's 2nd inning double - the 547th of his career - tied him with Manny Ramirez for 30th all-time.
*Christian Boutwell notes that Lance McCullers hasn't allowed more than 3ER in 26 consecutive home starts, the fourth-longest streak in MLB history.
*Good news for the Astros: even though the Twins played at home yesterday, their Sunday afternoon game went 15 innings, took 6:26, and used nine pitchers who needed to throw 289 pitches in a loss to Tampa Bay.
*Richard Justice: The Astros are putting together a special season. Keuchel:
I've never been to the World Series, but if I had any guess about a World Series team, we have a good shot.

*Beyond the Box Score took a look at the pitching staff's ability to miss bats. Collectively, the Astros have the highest swinging-strike rate and the highest bullpen strikeout rate in recorded baseball history. This is an excellent article and you should read it immediately.

Boyd - the Astros' 2014 8th Round pick - had only played in 26 games for Corpus this year, hitting .186/.253/.314. There are now only three outfielders on Corpus roster. Make way for Kyle Tucker?
*This Massachusetts 14-year old wanted an alternative to Tommy John Surgery, so he went to Alabama.

Tuesday Morning Hot Links

*Sunday might just have been the tipping point for Carlos Gomez. The Astros are apparently looking for other options, and Jeff Luhnow came out and said:

*Tonight will likely be Tony Kemp's major league debut. The Nashville native (fist-bump) got the call while in his hometown as the Grizzlies played the Nashville Sounds. Kemp:
It was a special moment, even a more special moment being in Nashville and having my family and friends and teachers being able to be a part of that moment with me. It was pretty cool.
This is one of the best stories of this miserable season. Luhnow is hopeful:
Tony's been the most consistent performer down there all year and he's always had the type of game and personality where he can be a spark to the lineup. We hope that he'll give us a shot in the arm.
*Today in "Well, yeah" we read that Dallas Keuchel needs to step up. Dallas Keuchel is still very frustrated. The League has adjusted to Keuchel, but Keuchel has not yet adjusted back. Keuchel:

A 7.5-game divisional deficit in mid-May is like a beeping alarm to a burglar: you aren't screwed yet, but there's a sense of urgency that wasn't there a few moments ago.
*Scary night for Corpus in San Antonio last night as Danry Vasquez and Mott Hyde collided in the outfield, delaying the game for 45 minutes while they were taken off the field. PreStros Morning Report: April 7

Fresno (0-1)
Fresno opened up their Triple-A title defense at Las Vegas last night. The Grizzlies had a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the 7th but Las Vegas scored the final four runs of the game, winning 6-4 on a 2-run walkoff home run by former Astros great Marc Krauss.
Brad Peacock gave up 2H/2ER, 5K:2BB in 5IP and every Fresno reliever allowed one earned run. Juan Minaya allowed the walk-off home run.
Danny Worth was 2x4 with a triple, home run, and 2RBI. Colin Moran had an RBI single, Jon Kemmer added a triple, and Tyler Heineman and Andrew Aplin each added a hit and a walk. Jon Singleton was 0x4 with 2K. A.J. Reed was 0x3 with two walks and an RBI.
Man of the Match: Danny Worth
Corpus (1-0)
Joe Musgrove and Keegan Yuhl shut down the Tulsa Drillers in a 2-0 Opening Night Corpus Christi win. Musgrove threw 5IP, 1H/0ER, 4K:0BB and Yuhl followed that up with 4IP, 1H/0ER, 3K:0BB to close out the game.
Mott Hyde was responsible for the offense, going 2x2 with a walk, home run, and both RBI. Derek Fisher was 2x4 while a rehabbing Evan Gattis went 1x4 with a double from the DH spot. Conrad Gregor added a double, as well.
Man of the Match: Musgrove, Yuhl, and Hyde.
Lancaster (0-1)
The JetHawks were tied with San Jose 2-2 heading into the bottom of the 7th when a two-out hit gave San Jose a 4-2 lead. The JetHawks rallied to get one back in the top of the 9th, but stranded the tying run on 2nd, losing 4-3.
Akeem Bostick allowed 6H/1ER, 0K:1BB in 3IP; Dean Deetz allowed 3H/1ER, 3K:0BB in 3.1IP, and Kevin Comer was tagged with the loss with 1.2IP, 2H/2ER, 3K:2BB.
Jason Martin (2B, RBI) and Jose Fernandez (SB) each had two hits; Drew Ferguson, Bryan Muniz, and Kristian Trompiz had a hit each. The JetHawks stole four bases but struck out 12 times, walked once, and committed four errors.

A.J. Reed wins award

Using deadened BBCOR bats, Reed smacked 23 home runs as well, matching Olerud’s total with supercharged bats. Reed led the nation in homers, slugging percentage (.735) and OPS (1.211), while ranking second in total bases (164) and third in RBIs (73). He hit .336 with a .476 on-base percentage, walking (49) more than he struck out (48). That offensive season alone would make him worthy of the Player of the Year award, but Reed also went 12-2, 2.09 in 112 innings as Kentucky’s Friday night ace in the rugged Southeastern Conference. He ranks just one win shy of the national lead and tops the SEC.
