It's been a while since we gave you an update on The Constable's efforts to manage the 1977 Astros in the wonderful Strat-O-Matic league Play That Funky Baseball.
The Constable has the Midas Touch, in which everything turns into a muffler. Through 91 games, his Astros are 40-51. The actual '77 Astros were 41-50 through 91 games. The goal is to finish at .500, since that's what the '77 Astros did, and he's only one game off the pace.
Go get 'em, Chief!

Your '77 Astros win again
Your Astros County-managed '77 Astros stopped the Cardinals:
"It’s actually Andujar who actually stops the St. Louis win streak at 11 with a tough 7+ innings. The Cards take a 1-0 lead in the 1st but a Terry Puhl double kicks off a big three-run rally in the 3rd that swings the game. Houston moves over .500 again and get this: they pass the Dodgers."
Record: 22-21

At least your '77 Astros can win something
Over at Play That Funky Baseball, your Astros have now won five straight.
Astros 4
Reds 3
Yes folks, that’s FIVE in a row for the Astros, as Gene Pentz takes Bannister’s spot in the rotation and pitches five and a third gutty innings, before Forsch and Sambito hold the fort for him.

'77 Astros lose in 12
Yo! Your '77 Astros played in the Game of the Day over at Play That Funky Baseball:
Astros 5
Dodgers 2
All Forsch has to do is get the bottom of the Dodger lineup.
But he hits Yeager to start the inning. Glenn Burke runs, Many Mota pinch-hits a walk, and Forsch is in wicked trouble. Lopes blows a bunt try and pops out, but Russell singles up the middle to tie it again! Garvey walks, loading the bases, and Bo McLaughlin is hailed to replace Foolish Forsch. The infield comes in, but Ron Cey raps into a 6-2-3 double play to take it to the 11th.
“I’m done,” says Sherman, “Spent. Do me a favor and cremate me now before they screw up another rally.” McLaughlin and someone named Stan Wall go another two innings, and Bo whiffs the first two guys in the last of the 12th.
Then Russell doubles, and here’s Garvey. And there goes one of the best two-out clutch hitters in the league walking to first on an intentional walk. Much better idea to pitch to the Penguin, who is more prone to walk or whiff than—
—hit the waddle-off 3-run shot into the bleachers that he now hits.
Record: 11-17

'77 Astros split another doubleheader
We just can't put it together twice in a row. The '77 Astros split the doubleheader with the Dodgers:
Game 1
Astros 2
Dodgers 1
Joe Niekro, whaddya know? Cruz with a double, triple and single to beat Sutton for the first time.
Game 2
Astros 2
Dodgers 7
Dan Larson isn’t that good. Three solo Dodger taters in the first three innings do him in, and Pentz and Dixon add fuel to the L.A. brush fire.
Record: 11-15
GB: 7
It doesn't help that the freaking Pirates have now won 13 in a row...

The '77 Astros are getting punked
Your Astros County-managed '77 Astros are having a rough time of it. And the Pirates are killing it right now, which is unfortunate as they're leading the division.

The beatings go on for Buc opponents. Clouts off J.R. Richard no less by Pops and Cobra propel Pittsburgh to their TENTH win in a row, and the Candy Man cruises.

'77 Astros fall again
Your '77 Astros lost again to the '77 Phillies over at Play That Funky Baseball.

Screw you, Joe Sambito
Over at Play that Funky Ball, your '77 Astros took a 9-6 lead into the bottom of the 9th at Philadelphia:
So Lemongello and Christenson both stink up the Vet. It’s 2-0 Phils when Watson belts a 3-run bomb in the 3rd. Phils tie it at three but ‘Stros get two more in the 4th. Solo homers from Bull Luzinski and Bob Boone tie it 5-5 in the 5th. Christenson homers in the 6th. Doubles by Puhl and Cabel in the 8th tie it 6-6, before a Cruz single off Garber and butchered fly by Luzinski put three on the board for Houston. Sambito’s in for the save, but Schmidt walks and Sizemore singles with one out. Mikey’s ripping off his shirt next to me, making more noise than the 30,000-plus combined. Boone walks to fill the bases and Maddox rips one to deep left center that drops just over the wall for a game-winning grand slam! In-freaking-credible.

Freaking Ken Forsch...
Over at Play That Funky Baseball, your '77 Astros keep trading games with the Cardinals, like yesterday's doubleheader:
Astros 12
Cardinals 1
Eric I mean Harry I mean Eric Rasmussen bends over for the fearsome Astros, as Joe Niekro throws a game as great as his first one, before he threw the barfy one.
Astros 2
Cardinals 3
Weird, but these teams are 4-4 against each other now, after Ken Forsch comes in with a 2-1 lead in the 8th and Templeton hits his fifth triple of the year to knock in the winners.

Your '77 Astros keep trading games with the '77 Cards
Over at Play That Funky Baseball, we split a double-header with the Cardinals, losing Game 2 on a three-run walkoff homer.
Game 1
Houston 6
St. Louis 4
ST. LOUIS—I’m no fan of phony grass as you know, but the fans are blazin here and nothing’s been sweeter so far than these Astro-Card battles. You got two speedy outfits with major gap power and shaky pitching and it’s been nip and tuck and nip again from the get-go. Here it’s J.R. Richard’s third try for his first win, and he’s got a 4-0 lead and a two-hit shutout after five. Tom Underwood’s been a Houston punching bag and a Howe triple and Ed Herrmann sac fly knock him out in the 6th down 6-0.
Then the 7th rolls around and J.R. gets tired for no special reason. A Hernandez walk, Simmons single, Scott double and single by Tyson fill-in Mike Phillips gets two runs back. Richard bears down, has an easy 8th, but loses it again in the 9th. McBride leads with a single and Reitz whiffs, but Scott walks and Phiilips gets hit. In comes Joe Sambito, and up walks dangerous ringer Roger Freed to pinch hit with the bases juiced.
Freed lofts one out to Cruz in right. Cruz drops the ball, two runs race in, it’s 6-4 and the ‘Stros are seeing red. Then Brock walks to reload the bases. Templeton rips one back to the mound, which Sambito nabs and fires home to get the sliding Phillips. Two outs. Keith Hernandez now, sporting a card with a mine field of clutch. Keith skies out to right and J.R. finally wins one.
Game 2
Houston 1
St. Louis 4
I stick around for yet another beauty on Saturday. Mark Lemongello starts for Houston and gets out of a crapload of jams. but Phillips knocks one in with a 4th inning single. Bob Forsch, brother of Ken in the opposing bullpen, has his light saber out this time, and has given up just three singles through five. Problem is that the fourth one is by Cedeno leading off the 6th, who rips off second right away and scores on a two-out single by Puhl to tie the game.
Now it’s the Jelloman’s turn. Mark gives up a Simmons single, then gets the next eleven Cards in a row to bring up Scott with two outs in the 9th. Seems like we’re going extras. But Scott pings a single. Phillips does too. And here’s that many Freed again. Sambito’s available but Lemongello is tough on righties and Rogers bashes both kinds of arms. So here’s Jello’s windup, here’s the pitch…
…and it’s high and deep and into the upper deck for a 3-run Clydesdale trot-off! Oddly enough, the season series is now tied 3-3.
Record: 6-7

The Pesky Domeballers leave eleven on base, while L.A. gets a two-out triple from Garvey in the 1st and a 3-run homer from Lopes in the 6th to chase Banister, seconds after he walks the pitcher to keep the inning going. A little discrepancy there.

'77 Astros win a nail biter
Over at Play That Funky Baseball, your 1977 Astros defeated the Cardinals 7-6 on a bases-loaded strikeout by Joe Sambito to end the game.
Gee look, a one-run game! Underwood doesn’t exactly wow the Astros, putting 14 of the 23 guys he faces on base before his plug is pulled. Still, St. Louis battles back against Bannister, score two in the 7th to make it 6-5 but Ken Forsch gets out of a bases loaded jam to send it to the 9th—where Sambito whiffs Roger Freed to get out of a bases loaded jam and end the game. '77 Astros improve to 2-1
Over at Play That Funky Ball, the '77 Astros improved to 2-1 with a 6-1 win over Scott Simkus' Cubs as Cheo was a home run away from the cycle.
Buckner returns from a short injury to see Ontiveros and Morales both go out, but it isn’t the reason the Cubbies lose. Joe the Lesser Niekro smokes them on just six hits, while Jose Cruz is at it again with a single, triple and double.
Record: 2-1, one game back of the Pirates.
Up next: St. Louis (managed by Stan Musial's Stance) for the home opener.

Play That Funky Ball: Opening Day!
If you've been reading every single entry over the past month, you'll remember that I'm the manager of the 1977 Houston Astros for the Play That Funky Ball Strat-O-Matic replay of the 1977 season.
Yesterday was Opening Day, and your '77 Astros started off with an 8-3 loss to the Cubs:
Houston finally wakes up on the late side with a flurry of hits and all three of their runs, but this is a Cubbie onslaught for most of the game. Slim Rick Reuschel puts Ferguson and Cedeno on with a walk and single to start the day, then whiffs Watson, Cruz and Puhl in a row, and four of the next six he faces.
W-R. Reuschel L-Richard HR-Gross
And I'm already pissed off.
