Henry Villar designated for assignment, more Martinez
The Astros have designated Henry Villar for assignment to make room for Fernando Martinez on the 40-man roster.
So, for some more about this much-heralded Fernando Martinez:
*Injuries have hampered his progress. According to the Adam Rubin notes Martinez' arthritic knee "that severely limits his mobility, even when he's technically healthy."
*The New York Daily News' Andy Martino:
The Mets publicly conceded what they had long since concluded internally: Martinez’s long history of injuries, which included arthritic knees at the age 23, outweighed his potential. Though one rival executive said, "The talent is still there."
Seedlings to Stars' Wally Fish:
I don’t think it would be fair to call any 22-year old player a bust as long as he’s still in the game and has shown flashes of being a future major league contributor. In the case of Fernando Martinez he has obviously failed to live up to expectations, but from my perspective those expectations were a little unrealistic.

Good God, I hate Round Rock. Oklahoma City ran their losing streak to six games with a 2-1 loss to Round Rock. Henry Villar allowed 8H/1ER, 1K:0BB in 5IP, Fernando Rodriguez was excellent - again - with 3IP, 1H/0ER, 2K:0BB (now sporting a 0.79 ERA), and Casey Fien gave up the game-winning homer in the top of the 9th to Luis Cruz, who accounted for both Round Rock runs with solo homers.
The RedHawks were out-hit 10-3, with Carlos Corporan going 1x2 with a solo homer and two walks. Anderson Hernandez and Koby Clemens got your other hits. J.B. Shuck was 0x3 (BB) and an outfield assist. Oswaldo Navarro also drew two walks.

It must have just been one of those nights as Dallas Keuchel allowed 12H/7ER, 2K:2BB, 3HR in 5.1IP. Cesar Carrillo allowed 3H/3ER (and one charged to Keuchel) in 1IP, and David Berner allowed 4H/1ER, 0K:1BB in 1.2IP (two charged to Carrillo).
J.D. Martinez was 1x2 with two walks (hitting .353/.419/.608), but as Greg Rajan noted, snapped an (at least) nine-game RBI streak. Jimmy Paredes was 2x4 and Wladimir Sutil had your other hit. David Flores also drew two walks.

And had 3RBI on the night in a 6-3 win over Savannah. Wallace is now slugging .914. Even with an 0x4 on April 20, Wallace is hitting .415/.455/1.000 in his last ten games. Henry Villar and Fernando Abad are taking opposite escalators

Astros sign Ryan Rowland-Smith
So the Astros have agreed to terms (pending a physical) with another pitcher - this one likely figuring into the SP5 mix, 27 year-old Ryan Rowland-Smith. Rowland-Smith is a lefty, 6'3", and 205lb from Sydney, Australia. We are working to confirm that, because he's from the southern hemisphere, his pitches actually spin the other way.
In 10 minor-league seasons, Rowland-Smith is 33-30 with a 3.84 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and a career 2.71 K:BB ratio, with 8.9 hits/9, 8.7 K/9, and 3.2 BB/9.
In 27 games with the Mariners in 2010, Rowland-Smith was 1-10 with a 6.75 ERA/1.69 WHIP, 1.11 K:BB, 11.6 H/9, 4.0 K/9, and 3.6 BB/9.
His numbers took a hit in July, when in six starts (31.1IP), he gave up 45H/30ER, 10K:10BB, 8HR, and a .331/.610/.993. Unfortunately, this came with a .311 BABIP - not terribly inflated. This is all also inflated by a 5IP, 11H/11ER performance at Chicago on July 27.
In five September appearances (four of them in relief), Rowland-Smith allowed 12H/6ER in 11IP for a more handsome 4.91 ERA, and a .279/.340/.558 (.323 BABIP).

Brad Arnsberg knows how to work some magic
In Zach Levine's blog post last night we read that the Astros will try to exhaust their options for SP5 before looking elsewhere. Maybe.

Winter Meetings likely to be boring as hell
Brian McTaggart talked to Ed Wade about the Winter Meetings, which begin next Monday.
Ed Wade:
I don't see us being really active at the Winter Meetings unless we're engaged in specific trade discussions at that point, but I envision it being quiet for us. As we've indicated, we've got some payroll limitations that we're working through, and that being the case, it will be a challenge being out there and be overly aggressive in the free-agent market. That doesn't mean we're not going to work to get things done, but I look at it in a realistic context. I don't envision us being as active as we were last year."
But here's an interesting note from McTaggart:
As is the case with the outfield spot, Houston may choose to find a starting pitcher internally. Wade said top prospect Jordan Lyles will likely be invited to spring camp to compete for a spot, and the team has kicked around the idea of putting young relievers Fernando Abad or Henry Villar in the rotation.
As of now, your rotation is: Myers, Happ, Wandy, Norris, and...someone else. Lyles just turned 20 in October. The last time the Astros had a 20-year old appear in more than a handful of games in September was in 1977, when Terry Puhl got in 60 games (and had a .786 OPS, by the by).
Villar started making that transition in Corpus earlier this season. What do you think about transitioning either him or Abad to the rotation?

Bourn: Started running
Hey, so Michael Bourn has started running again, but is not close to baseball activity.

McTaggart blogs that the Astros will call up five players on Wednesday. And the lucky five are 1B/OF Brian Bogusevic, IF Matt Downs, RHP Henry Villar, LHP Wesley Wright and C Brian Esposito.
Surprised? Admittedly the call-up of Villar was unexpected (as was the non-call of Chris Sampson), but other than that not particularly.

Chris Sampson (who is the Express' seventh-inning guy, apparently), Roy Corcoran, and Casey Daigle allowed 6H/0ER, 1K:0BB in 3IP of relief. Jack Shuck was 2x4 with a double and a triple, and Oswaldo Navarro was 2x4. Chris Shelton hit a three-run bomb in the 1st, and Brian Bogusevic provided the other RBI.

What happened?
Villar appeared mostly out of relief in 2009, a year after starting all 13 games he appeared in for Greeneville. In Greeneville, he threw 65.1IP, 4.41 ERA/1.24 WHIP, so he fared much better in his second full season in the US after spending 2006-2007 in the DSL. Villar also improved upon his K:BB ratio, which had been over 5.00 in each of the last two seasons, until 2009 in which it was 6.06:1.
What went right?
Home games. In 45.1IP at home, Villar posted a 1.79 ERA/1.06 WHIP, and a .224 BAA. His away splits weren't bad (3.43/1.12, .246), either, which is promising as he moves forward.
What went wrong?
Not a whole lot.
