The Astros beat the Braves yesterday 7-6 behind a 3-run Jose Altuve homer, but the biggest news of the weekend (and, apologies if you came here looking for some NOOZ and didn't find any, it was a rather busy weekend at ACHQ) was the injury bug that reared its ugly head:
*Lance McCullers has a sore shoulder and, despite a clean MRI taken on Friday, could still land on the DL to open the season. He was scheduled to start a game this past weekend, but the soreness prevented that from happening, and there is no timetable for his return. "150 games are more important than those first two (starts)," McCullers told the Chronicle.
*Max Stassi has an injured hamate bone which, as Hinch says in this MLB.com video, affects Stassi's hitting more than it does his catching. Stassi will see a specialist in Houston today and rejoin the team in Kissimmee on Wednesday.
*As far as depth, Alfredo Gonzalez is the only other catcher on the 40-Man roster (other than Castro, of course). Gonzalez has only played in 32 games for Corpus, but hit .321/.409/.378 across three levels in 2015. Tyler Heineman hit .285/.334/.379 between Corpus and Fresno last year, but would have to be added to the 40-Man roster.

The Express break their nine-game losing streak with a 3-0 win over the Isotopes. Shane Loux threw a complete game shutout (his first since 2004): 9IP, 5H/0ER, 6K:0BB. Brandon Barnes is having an impressive Triple-A run, going 2x3 with a double to raise his average to .364. Jack Shuck, Oswaldo Navarro, and Edwin Maysonet all provided RBIs.

Frisco did all their damage in the first inning, beating Corpus 2-1. Dallas Keuchel took a hard-luck loss, allowing 5H/2ER, 5K:2BB in 7.2IP. Evan Englebrook struck out three of the final four Frisco batters. The Hooks only got three hits, but two of them were for extra-bases: David Cook's triple, and Jimmy Van Ostrand's double. J.D. Martinez had the other hit. Koby Clemens is just having a hard time since returning from the DL. He hit .188 in August, and is hitting .132/.233/.237 in his last ten games.

Better than/Worse than League Average
So I got a little bored during lunch, and decided to run a few numbers. Because it was always my opinion that if you were a better-than-average player, you should probably head up a level. We're almost mid-way through the minor-league season, and there haven't been any significant, developmentally-minded promotions to speak of (*cough cough J.D. Martinez cough cough*). So let's help The Apparatus out by figuring it out for them, beginning with Lexington. (Note - the Lg Avg line is exactly what it looks, and I've brought the K:BB ratio down to x:1). (Further note: 200 PAs was the cutoff for consideration - 3+ PAs/team game) (One more note: Lg Avg OPS is currently .698. Players above .698 are naturally above that line.)
Lexington - hitters
Okay, so this is obviously telling of a few things:
-J.D. Martinez needs to stop playing here, because it's not even fair. His OPS is 299 points above league average.
-Jose Altuve, being about a year and a half younger than league average, is doing really well.
-Jiovanni Mier is not, but he's also about two and a half years younger than the average SAL player. He and Jonathan Meyer are the only 19-year olds on the team.
Lexington - pitchers (Note: cutoff was 40IP. Sure, it's arbitrary, but there had to be a line drawn somewhere) (Further note: Organized compared to League Average WHIP)
Some things to regard here:
-In what is pretty obviously a pitcher's league, the Astros have some arms better than the rest of the league. Maybe you looked at Bushue's place in this table and were surprised to find him below LgAvg. Don't fear, he's also almost three years younger than the typical SAL pitcher, and he has a better K:BB ratio and ERA.
-Same with Juan Minaya. His peripheral numbers are worse than league average, but he's also just 19.

Express hitters got six extra-base hits, and Bogusevic, Shelton, Kata were each 3x6 with 7RBI between them. Jason Castro was 2x4 with 2RBI.

GCL Astros - RHP Juan Minaya
Now that we're done with the GCL Astros offensively, let's turn our withering gaze to the pitching staff, beginning - appropriately, I think - with the Starting Pitchers.
The Astros had the second-youngest pitching staff in all the GCL (.2 years older than the Rays' GCL team), and perhaps as a result gave up the most runs per game at 6.57 (1.48 runs/game higher than the 2nd-worst). Because of that, the GCL Astros had the worst ERA (4.87) and WHIP (1.53) in the league. But enough of that.

Similar to what we saw with many of the batters in the GCL, Minaya just got tuckered out and faded in the last month of the season, posting a 2.08 ERA in July and a 7.15 ERA in August. Those home/away splits are a little alarming, but Minaya didn't strike a whole lot of guys out, he sure did keep the ball on the ground, and his BAA against righties was a nice little .221. Aside from Tanner Bushue, whose season came to an end after five starts, Minaya posted the lowest WHIP among SPs with 5+ starts.
The Astros had the second-youngest pitching staff in all the GCL (.2 years older than the Rays' GCL team), and perhaps as a result gave up the most runs per game at 6.57 (1.48 runs/game higher than the 2nd-worst). Because of that, the GCL Astros had the worst ERA (4.87) and WHIP (1.53) in the league. But enough of that.
