Marcus Nidiffer - whose release surprised Astros County - discussed his release-and-sign.
Nidiffer, on his move to the Angels' system:
“I signed like, literally as I walked out of the door of the Astros’ locker room. It was a quick transfer. I went right back home [from spring training in Florida], dropped my car off and then flew out here [to the Angels’ spring facility in Arizona].”

Nidiffer looks for a big year
With a captip to Appy Astros, we get this story on Marcus Nidiffer from Kentucky.com, who notes that he's been officially moved from Catcher to 1B (which makes sense, given the Astros' recent load-up on catchers).
"I would say it's a lot easier to go from catcher to first than it is to go from first to catcher, that's for sure. But it is an adjustment. It's a lot easier on my body, I'll tell you that. I get a lot more 'ABs' but I'm still working at it. I still need work at first with groundballs and just learning the position. ... I've got a wood bat in my hands now, but it's still the same deal."

Greeneville Astros: Marcus Nidiffer

How did he get here?: Signed as undrafted free agent (2010)
Stats: 6'2" 200 lbs, Bats: Right Throws: Right
Hometown/Birthplace: Bristol, TN
Age as of April 1, 2011: 24
Position: 1B
2010 Men of the Match: 7
2010 Overview
(Cumulative: Greeneville + Tri-City)
PA | Avg/OBP/SLG | K:BB | XBH-RBI | K/PA% | XBH/H% |
286 | .286/.372/.535 | 59:18 | 30-36 | 20.6% | 42.9% |
What happened?
The Astros signed Nidiffer on June 14 out of Kentucky, where he was the starting catcher, and hit .284/.377/.512 for the Wildcats (.320 as a senior)
He joined the Gastros in time for the beginning of the season, and pretty much killed it right from the start, going 42x131 in June and July. Seven of his first ten hits were for extra-bases (five doubles, two homers). He spent 48 games with Greeneville, hitting .303/.393/.588 with a .361 BABIP.
Nidiffer was promoted to Tri-City in August, where he hit .250/.326/.425 in 21 games for the ValleyCats, and hit the game-sealing homer in G1 of the NYPL Championship against Brooklyn.
What went right?
The first half of the season. Nidiffer's first 131 ABs, he hit .321 with 19 XBHs (10 doubles, 1 triple, eight homers).
Hitting late. In the 7th inning or later, Nidiffer hit .321.
Non-ground balls. For this season, only 38.3% of his in-play balls were grounders. He hit 16% line drives, and 45.6% fly balls.
Not hitting into GIDPs. In 107 ABs with runners on, Nidiffer only hit into one GIDP.
What went wrong?
That second half. In August and September, Nidiffer hit - between Greenville and Tri-City - .229 (30x131), including a 2x33 stretch in September, before the playoffs started. Both hits were homers.
Hitting w/RISP. Nidiffer was 10x58, for a .172/.278/.276 line w/RISP. His OPS with runners on is much better (.947), so I'm not sure what the problem was.
Appy Astros says:
Nidiffer played a solid first base, only making 4 errors on the season. He wasn't spectacular but he improved as the season progressed...Those close to the team gave Nidiffer high marks for his character and leadership as well. He will have a tough road to climb to make it very far in the system. His age and his status as a NDFA are working against him.
Even though he didn't fare so well in Tri-City, given his age, I'd like to see him in Lexington, and if he does well, he'll need to be in Lancaster by the end of the season. Let's hope he was a steal in the draft.

Recap: NYPL Championship - G1
Tri-City is one win away from the NYPL Championship after their 5-2 win over Brooklyn at The Joe last night.
David Martinez got the start for the ValleyCats, throwing 5IP, 3H/2ER, 3K:3BB. He allowed both runs in the top of the first, after Cory Vaughn homered to right-center, scoring J.B. Brown. And then he calmed down, getting the next six batter before walking Brown and Vaughn in the third. But it was the top of the 4th before he allowed another hit.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Ben Orloff drew a leadoff walk, Austin Wates doubled him in, Adam Bailey singled to right, scoring Wates. Chris Wallace drew a walk, and scored on Brown's error. Dan Adamson got an RBI groundout to finish off the four-run 3rd inning that essentially ended the game.
Brooklyn threatened in the 4th: William Cherry got a leadoff single, and Juan Centeno walked. With one out, Cherry was caught stealing third base, and James Schroeder struck out to end the inning.
Marcus Nidiffer hit a two-out solo homer in the 6th to put the game away, 5-2.
Jason Chowning struck out three in 2IP of work, and Jorge DeLeon was perfect in the final 2IP.
Game Two is tonight at 5pm Eastern in Brooklyn's (beautiful) KeySpan Park.

The ValleyCats' reaction to the playoffs
The Albany Times-Union has some nice reaction from the ValleyCats regarding their playoff berth.
Marcus Nidiffer:
"We caught wind in the dugout. All the coaches started smiling and everyone was shaking hands. That's when we knew."
Manager Jim Pankovits:
"I was coaching in the third-ase box. I looked over and everyone had grins on their faces and were shaking hands and patting each other on the back. I knew what was up."
Ben Orloff:
"It's been tough for us. To come back from 10 games out or so, it's great. Everybody wants a chance to win a championship at the beginning of the season and that's where we're at right now."
Writer Bryan Fitzgerald:
Just six weeks ago, a playoff berth was a nothing more than a pipe dream for Tri-City. The ValleyCats were 9.5 games out of first on July 19th, but went on the finish the regular season with a record of 27-15 over their last 42 games.
Those 27 wins are as many as the ValleyCats have had in two out of their last three seasons. They finished in the cellar of the Stedler Division each of the past three seasons, winning just 27 games in 2007 and 2009 and 28 in 2008.
Pankovits:
"These last two or three weeks, every game has been a gut-wrencher. These kids have responded unbelievably."

Dayan Diaz allowed 4H/2ER in 0.2IP, Austin Lucas gave up an hit and an unearned run in 1.1IP, and Jeremiah Meiners allowed 2H/2R (1ER), 2K:1BB in the final IP. GCL Mets win 9-5. Ryan Ditthardt and Roberto Pena had three hits each, while Jose Vargas and Kyle Redinger each collected two hits. Chan-Jong Moon, despite his three errors, also drew three walks.
Man of the Match: Mark Jones
Boom! Albuquerque takes a 2-1 lead, and the Express respond with a 4-run 4th. Express go on to win convincingly 9-3. Wesley Wright is, rightly, back into his role as a starter and allowed 5H/2ER, 3K:0BB over 54 pitches (2.2IP). Brad Thompson allowed 3H/1R (0ER) in 1.2IP, while Majewski (1.2IP), Corcoran (2IP), and Daigle (1IP) held the Isotopes to 2H/0ER. Drwe Locke was 4x5 with two doubles, Brian Bogusevic was 3x4 with a homer, and Kevin Cash was 3x4 with 2RBI and a walk. Tommy Everidge was 2x4. Wonder where Chris Shelton is? Facing a "long stint" on the DL. Luis Maza was also 2x5.
Man of the Match: Drew Locke.
Corpus
Hm. The Hooks got three hits, and it's hard to win with three hits. So they lost 4-0 to Frisco. Jordan Lyles gave up all four runs - all earned - allowing 10 hits, two walks, and seven strikeouts over 6IP. Erik Stiller, Nelson Payano, and Evan Englebrook threw three no-hit innings. German Duran, Jimmy Van Ostrand, and Jhon Florentino got your hits, with Shuck and Clemens drawing walks.
Man of the Match: The bullpen
Lancaster
Stockton beat up on Lancaster for a 9-4 win. David Duncan threw 2.2IP, 6H/5ER, 2K:2BB, while Edwin Walker allowed a hit and a walk in 3.1IP. Kyle Godfrey (2IP) and Brian Wabick (1IP) combined to allow 5H/4R (3ER), 2K:2BB, 1HR. Mark Ori was 2x4 with two doubles and two RBI (and a missed catch for an E3). Freddy Parejo was 2x2 with a walk and RBI.
Man of the Match: Edwin Walker
Lexington
Rome got six in the top of the first, and that was all they needed - despite being outhit 10-3 by the Legends, and committing four errors. Rome wins 6-3. All six were on Juan Minaya, who allowed 1H/3BB in 0.2IP. He got some help from Zach Grimmett, who allowed 4H/1BB in the next 2.2IP. Jose Trinidad threw 3.2 perfect IP, striking out three, and Wander Alvino allowed one hit in 2IP. Miguel Arrendell (who's hitting .400 - 14x35 - in his last ten games) was 2x5 with an RBI, and Jonathan Meyer had your other 2-hit game. Kody Hinze was 1x2 with two walks. Jose Altuve was 1x5 with an RBI and two runs scored.
Man of the Match: Miguel Arrendell.
Tri-City
Jeebus. Tri-City scores a season-high seven runs and still loses 9-7. Murillo Gouvea allowed 6H/3ER, 3K:1BB in 5IP while the bullpen of Brandt Walker (1IP), Jeiler Castillo (1IP), Joan Belliard (0.2IP), Adam Champion (1.1IP), and Andrew "Jimmy" Robinson - can we get a verdict on his actual name? - (1IP) allowed 11H/6ER, 7K:2BB. Congratulations, though, to Adam Bailey and Ben Heath who hit their first professional homers. Nick Stanley was 3x4 (RBI), and Bailey ended up 3x4 (2B, HR, 3RBI).
Man of the Match: Adam Bailey.
Greeneville
Nice job of rallying by the Gastros, who were behind three times to Johnson City and still won 7-6. Ricardo Batista threw 4IP, 2H/2R (1ER), 2K:2BB; Ryan Cole allowed 4H/2ER in 2.2IP, and Brian Streilein got the blown save and the win with 2H/2R (2ER) in 1.1IP. Phil Rorabaugh got his first save of the season with a scoreless 9th. Marcus Nidiffer was 2x4 with two doubles (and is hitting .500 this week). Bubby Williams hit a two-run homer.
Man of the Match: Despite the error, it goes to Nidiffer.

Astros add another catcher
The Astros signed Kentucky catcher Marcus Nidiffer as an undrafted free agent.
From UK Athletics:
A native of Bristol, Tenn., Nidiffer has served as UK's primary starting backstop for the last three seasons, playing in a total of 153 games with 121 starting assignments, redshirting during UK's 2006 SEC Championship season. In his UK career, Nidiffer batted .284 (121-for-426) with 91 runs scored, 18 doubles, two triples, 25 homers and 84 RBI, stealing 7-of-8 bases, finishing with a .512 slugging percentage and a .377 on-base percentage. After playing in just eight games and seeing six at bats as a redshirt freshman in 2007, Nidiffer emerged as UK's primary catcher in 2008, splitting time with then-senior Tyler Howe behind the plate. In 2008, Nidiffer batted .216 (25-for-116) with 20 runs scored, five doubles, one triple and five homers, driving in 17 RBI. As a junior, UK relied heavily on Nidiffer as UK lacked depth behind the plate, forcing him into catching throughout the season without many days off. Despite playing the majority of the season with a broken thumb on his catching hand, Nidiffer suited up daily for the backstop position, leading UK with 10 homers, the seventh UK catcher in program history to lead the team in homers. Overall during 2009, Nidiffer hit .312 (49-for-157) with 37 runs, six doubles, one triple, 10 homers and 32 RBI.
As a fifth-year senior in 2010, Nidiffer batted .320 (47-for-147) with 32 runs, seven doubles, 10 homers and a career-high 35 RBI. Defensively, Nidiffer led the SEC in pickoffs by a catcher, nabbing four runners off base and catching a total of eight runners stealing base.
