So Anderson Hernandez has signed a minor-league deal with the Pirates.
Who does this affect? Not Jed Lowrie or Jose Altuve, your presumed 2012 middle infielders, but it creates a free spot at 2B at OKC. This could be a place for Brian Bixler, but it also could be a place for Brandon Wikoff, or Jose Carlos Thompson - both of whom spent time at Corpus in 2011.

Notes from Brad Mills' press conference
Alyson Footer is giving live updates on Twitter of Brad Mills' press conference. Among the things she shares with us:
-2012 Opening Day 1B is Carlos Lee, unless Brett Wallace beats him out of a job in Spring Training.
-Jimmy Paredes' transition from 3B to SS is "unlikely."
Mills says, via Stephen Goff that Angel Sanchez, Brian Bixler, and Anderson Hernandez are your internal candidates for SS1.
Zach Levine says that the bullpen coach position won't be in place until after the GM is hired.

Wladimir Sutil out
In a secondary, or even tertiary, tranzaction note, we find from Farmstros that Wladimir Sutil has signed a minor-league deal with the Diamondbacks.
This clears out the Triple-A competition for Jonathan Villar to move up to the SS position for the RedHawks since Anderson Hernandez, who played the most games at SS for OKC in 2011 (once you clear out Manzella), has a shot at making the Opening Day roster for the Astros.

What's next for Jose Altuve?
We're not going to get too ramped up about Jose Altuve - well, not anymore than we already have - but it's worth wondering about: What to do with Jose Altuve next?
First of all, don't expect Altuve's stop at Corpus to be brief before heading to Oklahoma City. It took 213 ABs of Altuve hitting .408 for the Astros to decide that maybe he was too good for the level of competition he was facing. 200 ABs at Corpus could take him to the middle of August, and that's given the possibility that he's completely lights out.
That said, it's a good opportunity for Altuve. Those currently on the roster with more than 10 games at 2B in Oklahoma City include Anderson Hernandez and Jose Vallejo.
Anderson Hernandez has done the best job, hitting .261/.315/.400, with 10 errors. Vallejo is hitting .228/.287/.278 in 33 games. Hernandez is hitting .308/.368/.519 against lefties, but .242/.293/.352 against righties. Minor League Baseball's website is kind of a prick, only letting me see Altuve's current splits - meaning, his 4ABs at Corpus last night, and not his Lancaster splits. But I'm guessing they're better than Anderson Hernandez' splits.
So there's an opening at OKC for a good second baseman, and by mid-August we could be seeing Altuve playing there.

Man of the Match: Wladimir Sutil
Lancaster
A day after losing to High Desert 15-8, the JetHawks turned the tables for a 12-8 win. Andrew Robinson got the win, despite a 5.1IP, 12H/6ER, 4K:1BB performance. Mike Ness went 2IP, 4H/2ER, 3K:1BB, HBP, and Kirk Clark did what Kirk Clark does - didn't allow a run - going 1.2IP, 1H/0ER, 3K:1BB.
Jay Austin was 4x6 with three doubles and 2RBI, and Jose Altuve was 3x5 with a 1B/2B/3B/RBI. Kody Hinze was 2x3 with a HR/2BB, and Jake Goebbert and Erik Castro each added homers to the total.
Man of the Match: Jay Austin
Lexington
A day after trying out-Roy Hobbs each other, Wallace and Nash went for a combined 1x8 in a 4-1 loss at Asheville. Mike Foltynewicz is still looking for that first professional win despite a quality start (6IP, 6H/3ER, 3K:3BB), and Jorge De Leon allowed his first earned run of the season, throwing 2IP, 1H/1ER, 1K:1BB.
Lexington was held to three hits - all singles - from Delino DeShields, Chris Wallace, and Jhonny Medrano. DeShields, Wallace (who was also caught stealing home), Mike Kvasnicka, and Bryce Lane each struck out twice.

-J.D. Martinez (quad) will be out until Thursday, when the Astros can reevaluate him.
-Fernando Abad had a temperature of 101, and was sent back to The Facility.

Bourn: Started running
Hey, so Michael Bourn has started running again, but is not close to baseball activity.
Within McTaggart's notebook, we also read that Castro is going back to Stanford, and Dave Clark is looking forward to managing Licey in the Dominican Winter League, which will feature Josh Banks, Henry Villar, Anderson Hernandez, Alberto Arias, and Sammy Gervacio.

Anderson Hernandez called up
The Astros have called up Anderson Hernandez this morning, according to the MiLB's transactions page. I need to look at the 40-man roster to see how this shakes out with Manzella's activation, Abad's call-up, Feliz' trade, and now Hernandez.

Blum up, Hernandez designated
In today's episode of How To Be Ridiculous, Eddie and The Gang activate Blum from the DL and designate - not Pedro Feliz - but Anderson Hernandez for assignment. Hilarity ensues.

Who needs to be freed?
So Geoff Blum went 0x4 last night - as the Juvenile Court Judge told you - at short for Corpus. It was to be his final rehab start before returning to the Big Club. Bernardo Fallas writes that there's a tough roster choice to make for when Blum is activated.
Angel Sanchez has done well at short in Manzella's absence (and might have earned the starting role, even when Manzella is activated), and Anderson Hernandez has been alright, as well.
But who should go? It's not even that tough of a decision - Pedro Feliz. He's not even the go-to guy on the bench for a pinch-hit appearance, anymore. It's time to go ahead and pull the plug on his .551 OPS (and an OPS+ of 48). If the Astros were willing to release Kaz Matsui, they shouldn't have a problem eating the ~$1.5m remaining on Feliz' contract.
