Baseball America named Astros 2nd-Round pick A.J. Reed as their college baseball player of the year...
Using deadened BBCOR bats, Reed smacked 23 home runs as well,
matching Olerud’s total with supercharged bats. Reed led the nation in
homers, slugging percentage (.735) and OPS (1.211), while ranking second
in total bases (164) and third in RBIs (73). He hit .336 with a .476
on-base percentage, walking (49) more than he struck out (48). That offensive season alone would make him worthy of the Player of
the Year award, but Reed also went 12-2, 2.09 in 112 innings as
Kentucky’s Friday night ace in the rugged Southeastern Conference. He
ranks just one win shy of the national lead and tops the SEC.

Top 10 Round Draft Status Update
So let's get to the latest news and rumors regarding the Astros' draft picks. (Reminder, all statuses will be updated at the 2014 Draft Page)
*1-1 pick Brady Aiken's father tells Mark Berman a deal will be finalized with Houston "within a week or two."
*3rd Round pick J.D. Davis wasn't expecting the Astros to call his name. "We got calls from other teams, but the Astros weren't on the radar...I'm pretty pumped."
*4th Round pick Daniel Mengden: Getting selected by the hometown Astros "meant the world" to him.
*5th Round pick Jacob Nix is "expected to be a difficult sign," says Mike Elias, who expects to sign him anyway.

7-196: Derick Velazquez
With the first pick of the 7th Round of the 2014 MLB Draft (196th overall) the Astros select RHP Derick Velazquez out of Fresno State.
Velazquez is a 6'4" 200lb junior who was previously drafted by Baltimore in the 15th round of the 2012 draft, after he spent his freshman year at Merced College. MLB.com had him ranked as the #144 draft prospect in their Top 200, while Baseball America ranked him #308 in their Top 500. As a junior, he went 3-5 with a 4.79 ERA in 28 games (4 starts), featuring 38:10 K:BB in 56.1 IP. He was named to the Mountain West Academic All-Conference team in 2013.
Introduced to baseball by his babysitter at age 4, he also played basketball as a kid, but quit the sport because he enjoyed the diamond more. His pitching repertoire features both two-seam and four-seam fastballs, a changeup, and both hard and soft curves.

He's been up to 94 mph with his fastball with a ton of life, and he complements it with a breaking ball that's an out pitch when he's throwing well. He has some feel for a changeup, though he hasn't thrown it as much. Tall and thin, Velazquez has room to add good weight and strength, leaving some scouts to think there's projection in what he can become.
