Tuesday Morning Hot Links

*Colin Moran was 2x4 with a double and 2RBI yesterday, giving him a 1.253 OPS on the Spring. But  Reymin Guduan allowed a run in 1IP, Ashur Tolliver allowed 2H/2ER in 0.1IP, Jordan Jankowski gave up an earned run in a Cardinals' 6-3 win.

*Hinch plans on carrying 13 pitchers into Opening Day, which is not great news for Colin Moran, or A.J. Reed, or Tony Kemp. McTaggart says that Musgrove has put himself in line for SP5 over Fiers, who could go to the bullpen with Chris Devenski in long relief.

*Collin McHugh will throw live BP today - even though he was supposed to do it yesterday - and talked about why, in the age of the personalized offseason throwing program, it took until Spring Training to diagnose his arm.

*The Braves claimed lefty reliever Kevin Chapman off of waivers. Chapman, who was out of options, had to pass through waivers in order to be sent to minor-league camp. Thus, the 40-Man roster is at 39, and there is one less lefty reliever to challenge the Blood Reign of Tony Sipp.

*Sig Mejdal will be in uniform with the Tri-City ValleyCats as a "development coach." Click the link for how the Astros plan to gain from having an actual rocket scientist in short-season rookie ball in New York.

*A.J. Hinch isn't really thrilled with the fact that Alex Bregman has one plate appearance with Team USA.
You can imagine how I feel about that. It's part of being a bench player on that type of team. He's missed some valuable repetitions.

*Jerry Crasnick writes about the connections between Carlos Beltran and Carlos Correa and you should read it immediately.

*Biggio said that the current Astros core of Bregman, Correa, Altuve, and Springer reminds him of the 2000s.

*John Sickels sees flashes of Anthony Rizzo in A.J. Reed's Spring Training swing corrections.

*National Treasure Javier Bracamonte gave a kid some on-field catching lessons during yesterday's game.

*Yoenis Cespedes' life on the ranch.

Tuesday Morning Hot Links

Yesterday's Spring Training game against the Nationals ended in a tie because Selig. Carlos Correa's first homer of the Spring accounted for the Astros' lone run. Dallas Keuchel threw 3IP, 1H/0ER, 4K with 30 of his 43 pitches thrown for strikes. Feldman and Gregerson will throw in a minor-league game this morning while Brad Peacock gets the start against the Tigers.

*UPDATE: Max Stassi had surgery on his injured wrist yesterday, and will be out for six weeks, which would put his earliest return on May 1. Given that timetable, he would miss at least the first 24 games of the regular season. Also, given that he would have opened the season as Castro's backup, we're talking about maybe 5-6 starts on the high side (not including any spot starts he *might* get at DH). It's not great news for Stassi, who was likely hoping for a simple bone bruise, but it's also no reason to break out our sackcloth & ashes alternate jerseys.

*Doug Fister left camp today with some sort of illness.

*Keuchel felt pretty good, especially against the lineup the Nationals ran out.

*Through 12 Spring games Astros starters have a 2.51 ERA. Hinch:
We're stronger at this point this year than we were at this point last year. Lance McCullers wasn't in our camp last year. We weren't talking about guys like Feldman and Fister in the fourth- and fifth-starter spot. Fiers wasn't here last year. So some names have changed but the quality has been enhanced.

*Jon Singleton is wasting yet another chance to take the 1B role, writes Brian Smith.

*FanGraphs: The Astros' 1B/DB Dilemma:
With Reed likely to spend April in the minors for service time reasons and Gattis not at full health, the team has a chance to give (Tyler) White some regular at-bats against big-league pitching and see how his skill set might translate. It's a chance they probably shouldn't pass up, even though it will require the team to use a 40-man roster spot to get him added to the roster.

*Juan Minaya, Brendan McCurry, Joe Musgrove, David Paulino, Brady Rodgers, and Danny Reynolds were all reassigned to minor-league camp yesterday.

*...But David Paulino totally feels "like a champ."

*Luhnow said Joe Musgrove has a very real chance to contribute to the Astros this season, either as a starter or long reliever.

*Though he was reassigned, Brady Rodgers will rejoin the Astros for the Mexico City series later this month.

*Jandel Gustave, raised by his grandmother, was left unprotected in last year's Rule 5 draft and was taken by the Red Sox who traded him to the Royals who waived him and was picked up by the Padres who offered him back to the Astros.

*Collin McHugh is one of Jon Morosi's 10 Most Underrated Players in Baseball (as is J.D. Martinez).

*Bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte does it the right way.

*For the first time, the NFL is willing to admit that Murderball might actually damage your brain.

Friday Morning Hot Links

So now we're in the stage of the off-season where everyone is happy to be a part of the organization, disappointed the season ended too quickly, needing some time to think about the future. Let's see who said what on the first full day of the off-season:

Hinch is not satisfied with the season:
We got beat out in Game 5 of the Division Series and that's not what we set out to do when we got to Spring Training. That'll be what drives us into the future.

Luhnow said he will bring back the entire coaching staff:
Expectations will be higher, clearly, based on what we accomplished. We're pleased with the progress of the team, we're pleased with the progress of the organization.

Luhnow, on the 2016 roster:
We have a lot of good players on the team this year. We have a lot of good players in our system that are still coming, but there's going to be an impressive list of free agents out there. As a front office, we're going to reflect on the players we have. We have some decisions to make in the near term as far as options and who we are retaining and so forth - but less than most teams do because most of our players are under control.

Rasmus is focusing on resting up and getting in the woods, all other free agents at least acted like they wanted to come back to Houston (not that Rasmus didn't).

*Between two postseason games, a cricket match in November, and a longer process than the Astros envisioned, Tal's Hill will remain at Minute Maid Park for 2016.

*The 1st inning Yordano Ventura pitch in Game 4 that hit Carlos Correa left a bruise so severe he couldn't button his shirt the next morning, but he projects an aura of maturity, writes JP Morosi.

*It's time for the Astros to pay up, writes Brian T. Smith:
Not ridiculous, narcissistic Los Angeles Dodgers dough. Not old, blue-blood New York Yankees greenbacks. But smart, modern cash to lift the Astros up by their limited financial bootstraps and insert them into at least the middle class of the game's overinflated financial market.

*Bullpen catcher Javier Bracamonte was the Classiest Astro after Game 5. (But I'm still waiting on some Ramgers pitcher to take offense to it).

*Royals fan and excellent writer Rany Jazayerli takes on the 2015 Royals season. Read it, admire it, and then get mad that the Astros managed to blow three multi-run leads in a five-game series.
