In Rick Hummel's "What-the-heck-happened" recap of the St. Louis-Houston series, Berkman says some strange things:
"I don't think our two eight-game losing streaks are indicative of the talent that we have. I still think we have a good team. We may not have the best team in the National League but we've got a much better team than the 13-21 (the worst mark in the league) that we are. I think it's an early-season anomaly...
...We just haven't played very well. Our pitching has been OK, but our offense has been awful. I think you could make a case that we have a really good team. And you could also make a case that we're over the hill and may not do anything."
On the Cardinals:
"They're definitely the class of the division. First of all, they're the reigning champions. And second of all, they're probably a better team this year than they were last year with the addition of (Matt) Holliday for a whole season, and (Brad) Penny is unbelievable.
It just kind of irks me that every year, they find a guy that wins 15 games that anybody could have signed. Everybody should have known that about Brad. He's always been a great pitcher, with tremendous stuff. What did he sign for ($7.5 million guaranteed)? That, to me, could be the bargain of the year."

What was Penny yapping about?
Because all the scoreless innings run together, I can't remember what inning it was last night, but Brad Penny and Michael Bourn started yapping at each other, and it looked like it was all Penny's fault. What was his problem? The St. Louis Post-Dispatch has your answer.
Penny:
“I’m a competitor, and when you’ve got guys fouling the ball off and acting like they should have hit it out of the park, I was just, ‘Be respectful. Take your at-bat. You shouldn’t hit everything out of the park. You don’t hit many home runs.’”
Oooh, snap. Hope you feel good about yourself, Penny.

Who We Got - G8: Astros @ Cardinals
What would you be willing to give up for a week in order for the Astros to win this game?
Who We Got
St. Louis: 5-2, 1st place, 0.5 games up
At home: 1-0
Vs. Houston (2009): 9-6
Runs scored/Against: 42/24
Houston: 0-7, 6th place, 4.5GB
Road: 0-1
Runs Scored/Runs Against: 13/42
Starting Pitchers
Brad Penny: 0-0, 1.29 ERA
Last game: @CIN. 7IP, 6H/1ER, 4K:2BB
Brett Myers: 0-0, 6.00 ERA
Last game: vSF.: 6IP, 12H/4ER, 3K:1BB
Why the Astros Will Win
Jeez. Because one of these games, we'll have to win.
Because, hopefully, Brett Myers has something to prove. His last start against the Giants, he allowed 13 baserunners in six innings. As an emotional pitcher, he'll want to get one of these.
Because Brad Penny has a 1-2 record with a 5.58 ERA in his last five games against the Astros. Of course, his last game was in August 2007, but whatever. Or because in two starts at Beck's Stadium, Penny is 0-1 in two starts with a 4.50 ERA/1.58 WHIP.
Because Carlos Lee is 4x8 with a walk against Brad Penny, and Geoff Blum has hit Penny to a .435/.440/.522 line.
Why the Astros Will Lose
Because the Cardinals have four batters hitting over .280, including Pujols (.407/.484/.963) and Matt Holliday (.379/.419/.759).
Because the Cardinals hit Myers to a tune of .326/.360/.636 - and that's including the pitchers. Skip Schumaker is 6x13 (4 XBH), Holliday is 6x10 (4 XBH), and Pujols is 9x29 (3 XBH) off Myers, lifetime.
Because, dating back to last year, the Astros have won two of their last ten games at Beck's.

What did other NL Central teams do yesterday?
First day of the Winter Meetings, we know what the Astros did, or didn't do. What happened to other NL Central teams yesterday?
Brewers
According to the NY Post's Joel Sherman, the Brewers are on the verge of signing Randy Wolf to a three-year deal. This would be bad.
Reliever Mark DeFelice needs shoulder surgery, creating a bigger need in the bullpen.
Cardinals
Buster Olney reports that Brad Penny has signed a one-year, $7.5m deal (with incentives up to $9m total) with St. Louis. Given Dave Duncan's track record with Pitchers Who Were Good But Now Kind of Suck, it's a good move.
Cubs
Jon Heyman says the Cubs could be suitors for Marlon Byrd.
Pirates
The Pirates are listening on Matt Capps (closer candidate?), Ryan Doumit, Zach Duke, Roberto Clemente, Willie Stargell, and Bill Mazeroski.
Reds
They're trying to re-sign Laynce Nix.

Could Brad Penny help the Astros
Boston Red Sox pitcher Brad Penny - pardon me, former Boston Red Sox pitcher Brad Penny has been released.
"I had some bad breaks and made some bad pitches. But I'm healthy, and that's what I'm happy about. This isn't last year, when I was hurt. If that had been the case, I'd be upset. All in all I had a great time here. My shoulder is healthy and I'm glad I came here. It was a blessing."
Could the Astros use him? Well, maybe. I would imagine there are three spots locked up in the rotation next year: Roy, Wandy, and The Troof (Bud Norris, for you newbies). There's a mutual option for Brian Moehler in 2010, and Yorman Bazardo figures to be in the mix, but if the Astros can sign Brad Penny (who signed a one-year $5 million deal). That leaves at least one spot available.
Penny, though, doesn't come without baggage. After leaving LA, Larry Bowa said:
"You mean the same guy who was never on time, out of shape and has one complete game? He has more stuff to worry about in the A.L. East than me. He has to worry about getting people out. He was never on time, was out of shape and never helped the kids out. Put that on the (expletive) dot-com. Put it in the headline. He never watched the game (when he was on the DL). Jason Schmidt watched the games. Nomar Garciaparra watched the games. Mark Sweeney watched the games. You go right down the line, everybody who was on the DL watched the games. But not him. He was out of there."
It's been since 2007 that the 31-year old Penny's ERA was under 5.50, and Houston isn't exactly known as a place for pitchers to reclaim their career, but if Easy Eddie is in the habit of taking fliers on veteran injured pitchers, Penny might work out. He's only pitched 226.1IP since 2007, and he says his shoulder feels fine. Buster Olney says the best place for him is Colorado, where he could take advantage of a chance to screw the Dodgers. What say you?
