Rosenthal: Astros are possible suitors for Carl Crawford

In Ken Rosenthal's article on the impending free agency of Carl Crawford lists nine possible suitors for the Houston-born soon-to-be-incredibly-wealthy more-hyphen-than-hype left-fielder:

Crawford is from Houston, but the Astros probably cannot move the contract of left fielder Carlos Lee, who is owed $18.5 million in both 2011 and ’12. Crawford in center over Michael Bourn? Perhaps, but baseball people view Crawford as better in left. He has made only 11 appearances in center since 2004.

So the Astros could be interested, but not with the price tag he'll command.

Doesn't make sense to me. Crawford is a good player, but we already have a 4-win center fielder and we're not going to be able to move Carlos Lee's contract... plus almost all of our minor league depth (in terms of position players) comes in the outfield.

The main things I see us going after in trades or next off-season are second and third basemen. Maybe a one-year deal on a shortstop if Manzella performs poorly, while we wait for Jio Mier.

I hear there's this shortstop out of New York named "Jeter" who will be a free agent...

I do think there could be interest in a second baseman, as Matsui's contract is up, and the Astros don't seem to want to give Edwin Maysonet a chance (this was also noted in a CAP-ridden response to the Verducci column at BBTF)

I agree with OlemLK, The Crawfords and Becketts of the world would be nice in our uniform, but its just not a match. I like having Bourn as our hometown guy. He will come around. He runs into two lefties and DOC HALLIDAY this weekend though. EH.

I'm pretty excited about our outfield depth in the minors. Gaston, Steele and Shuck right? As much as I like Rosenthal for throwing a bone our way here and there, I'd rather us find someone a little more under the radar via free agency. I would hate to see us competing with Boston and New York. This could all change though if we self implode and Drayton tries to rebuild on the fly, if he would even be the owner then. It's always fun to speculate though.
