*The Winter Meetings start today. Will the Astros do something? Maybe! Possibly not!

-The Astros have competition looking for a starting catcher in the Dodgers and Mets.
-The Astros were not seriously involved in chasing down Nate Eovaldi, but it seems as though the Astros are more interested in upgrading the rotation via trade (meaning Kluber or Bauer or Syndergaard or Greinke).

*The price tag for Kluber or Tyler Bauer is said to be "very, very high." And why not? Also, I feel that if the Astros acquire Tyler Bauer it will be solely to troll me, personally.

*If you want Robbie Ray - a 27-year old lefty with 601 strikeouts in 460IP and a 3.89 FIP over the last three years, with two years of team control remaining - the price tag is pretty high.

*The Padres are interested in Marwin. Any team with a brain and/or a pulse should be interested in Marwin.

Houston's Minor-League free agents

Baseball America has a handy little post with all 30 Major League teams' minor-league free agents. For our purposes, here are the Astros' minor-league free agents (with statistical context provided to you, free of charge, by Astros County):

Luis Alvarez
Alvarez has spent his entire career with the Astros, debuting as a 17-year old in the Venezuelan Summer League. The catcher played at four different levels in 2013 (Tri-City, Quad Cities, Lancaster, and Corpus), hitting .282/.340/.511 in 41 games.

Michael Burgess
Burgess spent 2007-2010 with the Nationals' organization before sliding over to the Cubs for 2011-2012. He landed with Corpus in 2013, where he hit .203/.278/.378 with 12HR in 98 games.

Cody Clark
Cody Clark - perhaps the most heart-warming story of 2013 - is a minor-league free agent. When Castro went down with the knee cyst and Max Stassi got plunked in the coconut, Clark - who had been in the minors since 2003 (645 games/2337 PAs) got called up. He didn't hit all that well, but he threw out seven of 13 base runners.

Sergio Escalona
Escalona threw in 49 games for the 2011 Astros, posting a 2.93 ERA/1.27 WHIP in 27.2IP as a LOOGY. He missed all of 2012 due to injury, and only threw 15IP in 2013 for Corpus, where he posted a 6.60 ERA/2.07 WHIP.

Murilo Gouvea
Gouvea came to the Astros from the White Sox in 2009, and did not pitch in 2013. For Lexington, in 2012, Gouvea was 2-7 with a 3.71 ERA/1.17 WHIP, with 87K:29BB in 77.2IP.

Cameron Lamb
24-year old Australian reliever Cameron Lamb threw for three Astros affiliated in 2013 for a total of 58.2IP, with a 4.60 ERA/1.52 WHIP with 40K:23BB. Oddly, his best stretch was 19 games for Lancaster, where he had a season-best 3.95 ERA/1.35 WHIP.


Che-Hsuan Lin
Lin came over to the Astros last off-season after spending his career in the Red Sox organization. He got three hits for the Red Sox in 2012 (two in his 2012 season finale against the Yankees). For OKC in 2013, Lin hit .234/.356/.309 with an impressive 56K:60BB. He's a career .253/.349/.339 hitter in the minors. 

Jose Martinez
Martinez, an infielder who spent most of his time in 2013 at 2B, played in 81 games for OKC hitting .282/.316/.410. He's a career .278/.326/.408 hitter between the Cardinals and Astros organizations. The Batguy wrote a nice thing about him in April 2012.


Carlos Quevedo
Quevedo has spent his entire career with the Astros' organization. In 2013, he threw 85IP between Lancaster and Corpus - but 81.2IP of those came at Double-A, where he allowed a 3.53 ERA/1.21 WHIP, with 59K:20BB and 14HR. He has a career walk rate of 1.5 BB/9 and a 4.64 K:BB ratio.

*OKC, Corpus, Lancaster, Quad Cities all begin playoff series this week.
*Tri-City 0.5 up with three to play

Oklahoma City (81-62)

Memphis took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 9th, but OKC erupted for four runs with two outs in the bottom half on Jimmy Paredes' two-run triple and Jose Martinez's two-run homer, and got the walk-off in the 11th on Jose Martinez's single that scored Jon Singleton. OKC wins its 81st game (the most for an Astros' Triple-A franchise since the 2005 Express won 85 games in 2006. Blair Walters came up from Lancaster for the start and allowed 4H/2ER, 4K:3BB in 4.1IP; Pat Urckfitz (2.1IP) and Jose Cisnero (1.1IP) threw scoreless outings, striking out two each; Hector Ambriz got the win with 5H/2ER, 1K:0BB in 3IP.

Martinez was 3x6 with the aforementioned homer and 4RBI on the day; Jimmy Paredes (BB, RBI) and Carlos Perez were each 3x5. Marc Krauss (2B) and Che-Hsuan Lin (2B, BB) had two hits each. George Springer was 0x4 with a walk and a stolen base; Jon Singleton was 1x5 with the game-winning run.

Corpus (82-57)

San Antonio had a 5-3 lead going into the 5th...when they scored eight runs. Corpus mounted a rally, but fell 13-9. David Rollins allowed 10H/8ER, 4K:3BB in 4.1IP; Theron Geith gave up 5H/5ER (plus two charged to Rollins) in 2.2IP; Cameron Lamb and Carlos Quevedo threw perfect 8th and 9th innings, respectively.

Preston Tucker (2B, HR, 3RBI), Domingo Santana (2B, BB), Michael Burgess (HR, 3RBI), and Ronny Torreyes (2B) had two hits each.

Lancaster (81-58)

Lancaster had a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the 5th, when Rancho Cucamonga got the tying run. Chris Epps was thrown out at home plate to end the top of the 10th and Rancho Cucamonga tacked on the walk-off in the bottom of the 10th for a 2-1 win over Lancaster. Vincent Velasquez allowed 2H/1ER, 8K:1BB in 6IP; Kenny Long allowed two hits over four outs and Travis Ballew took the loss in a 2H/1ER, 4K:0BB, 2IP outing.

Dan Gulbransen was 2x5; Delino DeShields was 1x4 with a walk and his 51st stolen base of the season. Brandon Meredith provided the lone run on a 4th inning solo home run. MP Cokinos and Carlos Perdomo had your other hits.

Quad Cities (80-57)

Quad Cities withstood a 5-run 7th from Beloit to win their 80th game of the season, 8-7. Josh Hader allowed 2H/2ER, 4K:6BB in 4.2IP; Pat Christensen scattered three hits and two strikeouts over 1.1 scoreless; Jorge Perez, fresh up from the GCL, allowed 5H/5ER, 1K:1BB; Andrew Walter got the save with 1H/0ER in 2.1IP.

Danry Vasquez was 2x4 - both hits leaving the yard for 3RBI; Rio Ruiz (2 doubles and a walk) and Bobby Borchering (3B, BB, RBI) had two hits each. Carlos Correa was 1x4 with 2RBI; Austin Elkins and Jordan Scott had a hit and a walk each.

Man of the Match: Danry Vasquez

Tri-City (42-31), 0.5 up

Lowell got four runs in the bottom of the 1st for what looked like would put them up 1.5 with three games to play, but Tri-City answered with four in the top of the third to tie it, and three runs in the 7th and 8th for a 7-4 win to put the ValleyCats back on top of the division. Michael Feliz allowed 5H/4ER, 10K:2BB in 7IP and Gonzalo Sanudo got the save with 1H/0ER, 4K:1BB (his first walk issued since June 23) in 2IP. That's 48K:4BB in 37IP this season for Sanudo.

Chan Moon was 3x4 with a double, walk, and two runs scored; James Ramsay (BB, RBI), Conrad Gregor (2B, BB, 3RBI), and Ronnie Mitchell (RBI) had two hits each; Jon Kemmer (SB) and Tyler White (RBI) had a hit and a walk each.

Round Rock worked out their third-place aggression on OKC with a 9-2 win in which the RedHawks were held to four hits. Jake Buchanan got worked over for 11H/7ER, 4K:1BB in 6IP; Pat Urckfitz allowed a hit in 1IP and Wade LeBlanc allowed 3H/2ER in 1IP.

Jose Martinez hit a two-run homer, Japhet Amador, Jon Singleton (hitting 7th), and Raoul Torrez had your other hits. The Express only had one AB with runners in scoring position. George Springer was 0x2 with 2K.

Corpus (38-24, 1.0 GB) 79-53 overall

San Antonio put two on the board in the bottom of the 1st, but Corpus scored one in the 5th and got the go-ahead runs in the 7th for a 3-2 win at the Missions. Nick Tropeano allowed 4H/2R (1ER), striking out eight and walking none in 6IP. In Tropeano's last three starts, he has thrown 20IP, 14H/3ER, 18K:5BB. Andrew Robinson threw the final 3IP, allowing 3H/0ER, 1K:0BB.

Matt Duffy was 2x4 with a solo homer, and Ronald Torreyes was 2x4. Leo Heras and Enrique Hernandez got a hit, walk, and an RBI.

Lancaster (39-23, 9.0 up) 78-54 overall

Lancaster scored the final seven runs of the game to beat Rancho Cucamonga 7-1 and clinch the second-half (in addition to the first half) title. Colton Cain allowed 8H/1ER, 5K:1BB in 7.2IP; Kenny Long got the final four outs of the game.

Then Jose Valdez struck out the leadoff batter, walked the next two. Jake Elmore threw the ball away on a potential game-ending double-play, allowing the tying run to score. And then Jose Valdez balked in the game-winning run.

Robbie Grossman walked twice and scored the lone RedHawks run in the 1st. Brandon Laird, Fernando Martinez, and Carlos Perez had the only three hits - all three singles.

In a strange game, the RedHawks outscored Memphis (STL) 5-0 in the first four innings, then got outscored 20-1 in the final five innings as they lost 20-6 after it was all said and done.

Brian Bass lasted 4.2 innings, giving up 6 R (1 earned) on 5 H and 1 BB with 3 K. Enerio Del Rosario got 1 out and was charged with 4 R on 3 H and 4 BB.
