Via Jose de Jesus Ortiz, the Astros have released the following minor-leaguers:
*Joe Bircher. Bircher was the 2012 10th Round pick out of Bradley University. He was limited to 78IP in 2013 due to injuries, and was 3-3 with a 4.15 ERA/1.29 WHIP in 65IP for Quad Cities.
*Ernesto Genoves. Genoves, a catcher, was signed as an amateur free agent prior to the 2008 season, and never played more than 52 games in a season. In 37 games for Tri-City last year, he hit .196/.275/.299. His high-water mark was in 2011, when he hit .280/.375/.464 for Greeneville.
*Gera Sanchez. RHP Gera Sanchez was an unsigned free agent in 2012 (he was drafted by Boston in the 42nd Round of the 2009 draft, but did not sign). Sanchez spent the majority of 2013 in Quad Cities, striking out 57 batters in 50IP, but with a 5.22 ERA/1.44 WHIP.
*Jesse Wierzbicki. The Astros 24th Round pick of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina, Wierzbicki hit .271/.362/.409 in parts of three seasons. In 2013, he spent most of the season in Quad Cities, but did spend 25 games in Lancaster, hitting .245/.351/.351.
*Brandon Wikoff. This one's a heartbreaker (I mean, none of these are fun, but this one in particular). Wikoff was the Astros' 5th Round pick in 2009. Wikoff was in Corpus by 2011, hitting .308/.398/.353 with 33K:47BB in 331 PAs. He dealt with a wrist injury in 2012, but was injured in a one-car wreck at Spring Training last season. He played in three games in all of 2013.

PreStros Morning Report: July 28
Oklahoma City (59-50), 2.0 GB
OKC never trailed in their game against Iowa, but they needed the two-run homer from George Springer to win 4-3. Asher Wojciechowski threw 6IP, 6H/2ER, 2K:0BB; Phil Humber and Jorge De Leon threw scoreless innings and Josh Zeid recorded his 13th save of the season, despite giving up 2H/1ER in the 9th.
Springer was 2x4 with the aforementioned two-run homer, his 10th at OKC and his 29th overall, leaving him one homer short of a 30-30 season. Jimmy Paredes (SB) and Marwin Gonzalez (2B, RBI) added two hits, and Jon Homerton hit his 4th homer for OKC, going 1x3 to raise his average to .196.

Corpus (22-15, tied), 64-43 overall
Corpus put up a three-spot in the 1st inning on their way to a 5-2 win at Midland. Ruben Alaniz allowed just two earned runs, despite giving up six hits, four walks and two wild pitches in 6IP; Carlos Quevedo (2IP, 2H) and Andrew Robinson (1IP) threw scoreless outings.
Rene Garcia (RBI) and Jonathan Meyer (2B, RBI) had two hits each; Jio Mier was 1x2 with two walks. Domingo Santana hit his 17th homer of the season.

Lancaster (23-15, 2.0 up), 62-46 overall
Crazy game at Rancho Cucamonga. The JetHawks let a 3-0 lead turn into a 5-3 deficit in the 5th, then a 7-4 deficit after six, a 9-7 deficit after seven. They tied it up at 9-9 in the 8th, took a 10-9 lead in the 9th, and lost the game in the bottom of the 9th 11-10. Luis Cruz allowed 7H/5ER, 6K:1BB in 5IP; Tyson Perez (3H, 2BB in 0.1IP) and Kenny Long (2H, 1BB in 1.2IP) allowed two earned runs each; Blair Walters struck out the side in the 8th and Travis Ballew took the BS/L (the "Brandon Lyon") allowing 2H/2ER, 1K:1BB in 0.2IP.
Delino DeShields was 3x4 with a triple, homer and 5RBI while Chris Epps added three hits and an RBI; Joe Sclafani was 2x4 with a double, triple, and 2RBI.

Teoscar Hernandez (2B, HR, RBI) and Rio Ruiz (2B, 3RBI) had three hits each; Carlos Correa (2B, 2RBI), Dan Gulbransen (2B, BB, RBI) and Terrell Joyce (two 2B, 2RBI) had two hits each.

Connecticut got runs in three separate innings and held Tri-City to four hits in a 3-0 win at The Joe. Andrew Thurman took the hard luck loss, allowing 6H/2ER, 4K:1BB in 5IP; Richard Rodriguez gave up 3H/1ER in 1IP and Michael Feliz struck out four in three scoreless innings.
Tony Kemp (2B) and Brett Booth (2B) accounted for all four hits.

Asher Wojciechowski was super-human last night as OKC beat the Junior Rangers 5-0. Wojo pitched a complete game one-hitter, striking out five and walking one. Two double plays along the way meant that he faced the minimum, 27 batters.
Grossman was 2x4 with 2 RBI. Marwin Gonzalez was 1x5 with 1 2B and 3 RBI. George Springer went 1x3 with 1 BB and 1 SB

Bobby Doran turned in a strong start and Preston Tucker showed signs of getting things on track as he propelled CC to a 4-2 win over Tulsa. Doran turned in 6 IP, allowing 4H/2R with 2K:2BB. The Hooks dropped the first game of a 4 game series on Saturday, losing 6-2 to the San Antonio Missions (15-14). The only two Corpus runs came in the top of the 5th. Rene Garcia (2H, 2B, R, K, SB) led of the 5th with a double to left and advanced to 3rd on a Erik Castro ground out. Garcia scored on a single off the bat of Jonathan Meyer (2H, R, RBI, CS). Meyer would score on a fielding error. Austin Wates, had a double, and Enrique Hernandez had a base hit.
Carlos Quevedo (1-2) went 4.1 innings and was tagged with the loss. (7H, 6R, 4ER, HR, 2K, 2HR)
Jake Buchanan was perfect in 3.2 innings, and lowered his ERA to 1.31. (K)

The Jethawks fell 5-3 to the High Desert Mavericks (16-13) and Delino DeShields leaves the game with a hand injury. The Jethawks scored the first 2 runs of the game to take the early lead in the top of the 3rd. Chris Epps (R, BB, 2K) walked and hustled around the bases to score on a Delino DeShields (2H, R, 2B, 3B, RBI, 2K) triple to right. It was DeShields 4th triple of the season. DDJ scored on a Nolan Fontana (RBI, BB, E) RBI ground out. The other Lancaster run came in the 6th on a double by Tyler Heineman (2H, 2B, RBI, 2BB) that scored Brandon Meredith (H, R, 2K). Telvin Nash (H, 2K) had a single. Matt Duffy (H, 2K) also got a knock.

The River Bandits lost 7-4 to the West Michigan (13-14) Whitecaps on Saturday. Quad Cities put up 3 runs in the top of the 3rd and had the lead for a half inning. Jordan Scott (H, R, 2BB) led off the inning with a bunt single. Teoscar Hernandez (H, R, BB, K) hit a liner to left that advanced Scott to 2nd. Joe Sclafani (2H, 2B, RBI, K, CS) moved the runners on a sac bunt. Austin Elkins (R, BB, K) loaded the bases with one out after he was hit by a pitch. Jesse Wierzbicki (H, 2B, 2RBI) double to left and scored Scott and Hernandez. Miles Hamblin (H, RBI, K, CS) was up with 2 runners in scoring position and only one out but he grounded out to 2nd and scored Elkins. Ryan Dineen (H, 2K, SB) K'd to end the inning. The River Bandits scored one more in the 4th to retake the lead but would give up 4 the very next inning. Jobduan Morales (H, R, 2B) led off the 4th with a double to left. Teoscar Hernandez walked with 2 outs. Morales crossed the plate on a double off the bat of Joe Sclafani. Austin Elkins popped out, stranding both runners in scoring position.
Vincent Velasquez got the start and had sub par outing, but did pitch well enough to get the win. (4IP, 3ER, 2BB, 4K)

Jesse Wierzbicki (H, 2B, 2RBI) double to left and scored Scott and Hernandez. OKC scored the last five runs of the game, erasing a 2-0 deficit for a 5-2 win over Round Rock. Fernando Abad pitched well in his third start of the season, allowing 6H/2ER, 3K:1BB in 5.1IP. Mark Hamburger got the win - his first of the season - allowing 1H/0ER, 1K:1BB in 1.2IP. Hector Ambriz allowed four baserunners in 1.2IP, but didn't allow a run, and Jose Valdez struck out the last batter of the game for his 16th save.

With the 1st pick in the 10th Round (309th overall), the Astros select 6'4" 220 LHP Joe Bircher, a 22-year old Senior out of Bradley University.
*Bircher is from Omaha, Nebraska, and was a 2012 All-Missouri Valley Conference selection, as well as a 2011 Cape Cod Baseball All-League choice, and a team co-captain in 2011 and 2012.
*In four years (58 appearances, 50 starts), Bircher threw 359.2IP, allowing 346H/143ER, with 302K:95BB, and nine complete games. In his senior season, he allowed 93H/33ER, in 110IP, with 113K:21BB in 110IP, going 7-3 with a .225 BAA. Bircher owns the Bradley career record in stikeouts and IP.
