*2017 Astros bullpen coach (and 2018 Red Sox bullpen coach) Craig Bjornson said the Astros weren't thrilled about getting the Red Sox in the ALDS:
In all honesty, playing against the Red Sox, with what now we know is the World Series champion Houston Astros, we weren't very comfortable coming into Fenway or even having the Red Sox come into Minute Maid at that time
*A.J. Hinch is mourning the death of longtime Padres GM Kevin Towers.
*Tyler White is planning on making the Opening Day roster, but the Astros' depth might prevent that from happening.
*New phones are going to be installed in every park and MLB is going to monitor all calls made, in an effort to prevent sign-stealing.

Monday Morning Hot Links
*Random 2017 Astros fact:
The Astros were 7-27 (.206) when scoring 0-2 runs. The rest of the American League was a combined 68-573 (.106) when scoring 0-2 runs in a game.
*The GM Meetings start today in Orlando.
*Spring Training tickets go on sale today. The Astros' first game is February 23, 102 days and a lot of winter from today
*Craig Bjornson, the Astros' bullpen coach since 2014, was apparently not going to return to the team in 2018 and has been hired in the same role for Alex Cora and the Red Sox. Bullpen catcher Carlos Munoz will not return, either. So that's a bullpen coach, bullpen catcher, and an assistant hitting coach that Hinch needs to replace.
*Mike Petriello breaks down this offseason's free agent class based on Statcast metrics.
*Hey Erik Kratz is a free agent...
*Beaumont native Jay Bruce would like to play for the Rangers or Astros, but would also like to play for a contender, so I guess that leaves...

*Put in your time-off request now: the Astros and Yankees will play on ESPN at 12:05pm Central on Monday, April 4.
*Jeff Luhnow said that he talked to 12 teams yesterday.
*Dallas Keuchel finished 5th in the BBWAA AL MVP voting. Altuve finished 10th, while Correa got one 8th-place vote.
*Keuchel thanked Brent Strom and Craig Bjornson for refining his game.
*The Masked Marvel wrote up a sweeter farewell to Jonathan Villar than I did.
*The Astros learned a lesson with last year's Rule 5 draft - losing DeShields and Rollins - and are hoping to avoid a repeat. (As a reminder: here's What The Heck Bobby's 2015 Rule 5 primer).
*File this under Well Of Course, but the Astros have checked in on Phillies reliever Ken Giles.Giles came to Philly from Dallas in the Hole Camels trade. (Note: The previous sentence has been stricken because I did not follow the advice of an Internet Commenter and check my facts before I wreck my facts). Basically, if the guy looks decent in the 6th-9th innings, the Astros will have checked in on him.

Astros announce minor-league staff positions
Brian McTaggart is tweeting that the Astros have announced some positions on the minor-league side :
Paul Runge - Field Coordinator
Dyar Miller - Pitching Coordinator
Ralph Dickenson - Hitting Coordinator
Craig Bjornson - Roving Pitching Instructor
Jeff Albert - Roving Hitting Instructor
Brendan Verner - Strength/Conditioning
Jamey Snodgrass - Medical Coordinator
Daniel Roberts - Rehabilitation
This is Runge's third season as minor-league field coordinator. Bjornson was the bullpen coach in 2012 - and that's pretty much it as far as holdovers from the 2012 team.
Dyar Miller comes to the Astros from - surprise! - the Cardinals, where he was the bullpen coach in 2012, and was the only member of the Cardinals' staff who wasn't retained. Miller was the Cardinals' minor-league pitching coordinator for four years, and had spent 20 years with the organization.
Ralph Dickenson has been with the Blue Jays' organization as a coach for the last three years, and was the Nationals' minor-league hitting coordinator from 2007-2009 (Bo Porter connection?).
Jeff Albert had been the minor league hitting coach for the Cardinals' Florida State League team in Palm Beach since 2007.
Brendan Verner had been the strength & conditioning coach in the Pirates' system since 2009.
