Monday Afternoon (Trade Deadline) Hot Links

I figured since I wasn't getting much done at work that I would throw up some links to the latest rumors as we quickly approach the 3 p.m. CT MLB Trade Deadline. I've created a Twitter Trade Deadline list for those looking to keep up with the latest rumors. Check back for updates.

UPDATE 3:04 p.m. CT:

The non-waiver trade deadline has come and gone. It looks like the Astros, for the moment, are just going to acquire Liriano. There is still the waiver trade deadline at the end of August. A player has to pass through waivers in order to be traded. Deals do get done in August (See Larry Anderson for Jeff Bagwell).

Let us know what you think of the move Jeff Luhnow made.

UPDATE 2:30 p.m. CT:

Norris has pitched well this season. He has a 3.89 ERA and a similar FIP and xFIP. He and his  29.7 K% would be an interesting addition to the bullpen.

UPDATE 2:05 p.m. CT:

UPDATE 2:00 p.m. CT:

Nori Aoki, after a hot start, has not played very well for the Astros. The move ensures Derek Fisher finishes the season in the big leagues (unless he's traded). Teoscar Hernandez is a top 10 prospect for the Astros. He's blocked by George Springer, Josh Reddick, and now Derek Fisher. Kyle Tucker is ahead of him as well in prospect rankings. More indepth analysis later.

UPDATE 12:34 p.m. CT:

UPDATE 12:27 p.m. CT:

Trade Links

Francisco Liriano has a 5.88 ERA this season. His FIP and xFIP indicate some postive regression. A move to the bullpen would benefit him further. He will be a free agent after the season.

Zach Britton has only pitched 19 innings so far this season, due to injury. He has a 3.32 FIP, which is right around his career average. He'll be controllable for one more year through arbitration. He's making $11.4M this year.

Non-trade links

For those who had an NES and reading this right now, do you remember RBI Baseball? This is a good write up by Jeff Passan talking about his appreciation for RBI Baseball's version of Tim Raines

Sonny Gray plus $1.5M International Slot to the Yanks in exchange for an outfielder who blew out his knee, a two-time TJ pitcher and a six-season, minor league, cumulative .267 hitter who has just this year made it to AA. I think the teams with whom the Astros attempt to negotiate are demanding much more than the expect to receive just to keep the Astros from becoming a long-term powerhouse ... and, who can blame them?

Some of these trades baffle me. Doesn't seem to me that the Astros are really sincerely trying to make a trade. Just engaging to satisfy the broad expectation. Garbage..

Luhnow is useless at the trade deadline

Bill Holcombe said...

I was fine with this, until I just read that the Dodgers traded for Darvish.....

Its a little deflating when you can't have a starting pitcher make it more than 5 innings without imploding and the front office stands mostly pat, especially when your bullpen is now falling apart because of overwork because said starters are inept at pitching through the lineup more than twice.....

I am trusting in Lunhow........I like the trade we made...Just hope we didn't blow it by not making a bigger move because Jeff is in love with his prospects.....

I agree.

So every contending team gets better but the Astros. I sure hope things will go the way Luhnow thinks, or our pitching staff stays healthy and rejuvenates. Verlanders contract makes him a good waiver trade candidate but I'm not feeling optimistic going forward.

Also based off of twitter, bob nightengale is an idiot.

I know we are in the midst of the greatest Astro's season ever but how Does our pitching lineup against the Dodgers in the World Series? Does good pitching beat good hitting? or is that bullshit?

Peacock or Fires game three?

Bill Holcombe said...

We can answer that question after Kuechel and McCullers actually start pitching again. Otherwise.......

Rob S said...

Their pitching starting lineup is easily better than ours by a longshot, and they have great hitters too. They have to be the favorites to win if they weren't already...unless Kershaw goes down

Kuechel has a track record so I think that is a safe bet but McCullers is much more of question mark. His season high is 125.2 innings and has thrown 105.2 this year. More like a lottery ticket than someone you can count on. Morton is close to his getting close to his season average of innings. McHugh is probably no 2 from here on out. 7 runs a game and maybe it doesn't matter.

I would love to see Astros County run the numbers.

Bill Holcombe said...

McCullers is supposedly on the 10 day DL now.

Wallee Wright said...

I'm not unhappy ... it is difficult for me to see the guys smart enough to construct a record-setting team becoming the village idiots that others here seem to perceive. We acquired a starting pitcher in McHugh earlier this month and what we really need are competent sixth-seventh-eighth inning set-up men. Liriano will most certainly be an upgrade to Sipp, and the starting lineup is improved by moving Aoki, who I loved, and installing Fisher, who I'm sure I will grow to love. And, since it apparently went unnoticed, Kershaw went on the DL, again, with back issues ... not to mention the fact that we have been able to beat Darvish while he threw for a much better offensive team than the Dodgers.

Is the post season the same as the regular season? Ask Seattle. Dodgers are letting Kershaw rest just like we did with Dallas. Our current team is batting .185 with 6 RBIs in 143PA lifetime vs Darvish. I think Darvish is no 3 on that staff maybe 4. I wish our bullpen issues were as simple as a lefty specialist. Hinch doesnt use a 7,8,9 guy he just makes shit up as he goes. Lance gave up as many runs as sipp. Not big on sipp but he needs regular work and doesn't get it. Game was over before he threw a pitch but makes a great scape goat.

I find it interesting that the other teams vying for playoff glory are trading for Mercedes and BMW's while we settle for a Yugo! It also appears at least some of the better trades were pulled off for lesser caliber players than we had to offer, and I don't mean Martes, Tucker, Whitaker, etc. After telling us he was 90%+ close to completing several big time trades, I'm beginning to wonder if the GM has problems closing the deals!

Anonymous said...

Yugo its built for economy not speed. "That's my gold bar." I think that sums up how I feel about the trade deadline. Basically we know we have some gaps on this team that is dominating the regular season. None of them were closed today. Hopefully we can with internal options but so far they have been complete flops.

I'm not leaning one way or the other on this subject. I'm a bartender. I'll get you drunk but the rest is up to you. How the Astros are run is way beyond me. I just hope Luhnow knows what he's doing..

Anonymous said...

In Luhnow I trust. That has made us a playoff contender. Fuck that I have waited 42 years for a World series win.

Totally underwhelmed by the Liriano trade. At least we got rid of "Ted" Aoki.

What happened to the much anticipated 5 pm posting? Oh well. Another disappointment, in a day of disappointments.

It's coming, I promise.

Are there types of pitches that are better suited to cooler weather? For example, would a sinker be more effective in cooler weather vs warmer weather.

ntxlfty said...

To Astros County: my above comments were in no way intended as a criticism of you.

Michael Carder said...

Criticism is healthy. Don't apologize for it. The rabble will appreciate it. Promise

ntxlfty said...

Well, to be honest, it wasn't meant as criticism at 7:48, but at 12:06, that's another matter entirely. Perhaps THIS morning we'll have better results. : )
