Astros sign Cuban FA Yulieski Gurriel

News broke about an hour ago that the Astros have signed prized Cuban free agent Yulieski Gurriel to a 5 year $47.5M contract. Word is he should be ready join the big league club in about 3 weeks. His natural position is 3B, so this will definitely influence many of the decisions the club has been weighing in recent weeks regarding Valbuena, Bregman, etc. More to follow.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

Long a star in the top Cuban league, Gurriel topped his own standards in a season for the ages. Over 224 plate appearances, he recorded a hit in exactly half of his at-bats, took 38 walks while striking out just three times, and knocked 15 long balls en route to a .874 slugging percentage.

If the projected numbers for this guy pan out, it's a steal. That being the case, why didn't the Yanks or Dodgers over-pay to get him. I hope this doesn't mean Bregman is on the block for pitching, although admittedly we can use some. Love that he had few strikeouts. The Royals don't have an impressive lineup compared to teams that can thump, but they don't give ABs away, that's for sure. That really grinds down a pitching staff. Interested to see where this goes...

my instinct is to say "OHNOES DONT TRADE ALEX" but I don't know yet. We have so many good players now! Contrast this feeling to July 2011 when Ed Wade was still telling us he could win with Miggy Tejada and the decaying corpse of Carlos Lee!

Hopefully this helps the Stros in getting his younger brother to sign with them.

DFA Matt Duffy to put him on the roster. Next move should be to get Bregman on the roster via DFA Nolan Fontana
