Yankees had scouts watching Wandy

WFAN is reporting that the Yankees had scouts on hand in Houston to watch Wandy pitch against Pittsburgh.

If you click the link, you'll find the story is mainly about the Yankees' interest in Ubaldo Jimenez. But if the Rockies screw up the process, the Yankees may turn to Wandy.

They like top Yankees catching prospect Jesus Montero, but also want young pitchers Manuel Banuelos, Dellin Betances and Ivan Nova in the package. Heyman said New York is willing to ship pitching prospects — but not any of those three.

Of course the Astros wouldn't be interested in Montero, with Jason Castro coming back in 2012, but I would imagine the Astros would ask for one or two of Banuelos, Betances, and/or Nova.

UPDATE: Treating Montero as a catcher - as you'll note in the comments - is not necessarily a given, and he could be shifted to 1B. Depending on how the Astros feel about Brett Wallace, this could complicate things.

Montero is likely a first baseman in the future, not a catcher, so he wouldn't be blocked by Jason Castro. He would, on the other hand, be blocked by Brett Wallace (or vice-versa). Montero has a higher ceiling than Brett Wallace, but has struggled this year at AAA.

True, but have heard the guys at BP say that Montero just looks bored, needs to be in majors. I wonder how wedded to Brett Wallace the Astros really are, given that they don't play him against lefties.

I have also heard that Montero is playing Left Field which I could see if we could just cut Lee loose, while using Montero as part C part LF. Mostly catcher this year while Castro is out.

I would consider Wandy & Carlos Lee + 90% of Lee's remaining salary if it would convince the Yankees to give us Montero(and maybe a pitching prospect they're down on like Brackman). The Astros would get Montero and save about $1 million.

By my estimate 90% of Lee's remaining salary + Montero's 2011-2012 salary is more than a million less than 100% of Lee's remaining salary would be.
