Recap for 142 - Pirates @ Astros

It only took two swings of the bat, but it was enough for the Astros as they sent the Pirates to their 12th straight road loss in a 4-2 win. Carlos Lee hit a two-run jack in the fourth, and Miggs took Ohlendorf deep for a two-run jack in the sixth. Despite getting nine hits, the Pirates only got two across in the loss. Let's do the thing:

Moehler: 6IP, 7H/2ER, 4K:3BB, 17/27 first-pitch strikes, 20/59 non-contact strikes (15 called:5 swinging)
Fulchino: 1IP, 1K, 1 win, 2/3 FPS, 4/7 NCS (2c:2s)
LaHawk: 1IP, 2H, 2/5 FPS, 3/7 NCS (2c:1s)
Valverde: 1IP, 3/3 FPS, 2/7 NCS (1c:1s)

Astros pitchers threw first-pitch strikes to 24 of 38 Pirates batters, and Moehler threw another quality start, lowering his ERA to just a tick above 5.00, and if he gets under 5.00 for the year, that would qualify as a surprising turn of events. How did it happen? Moehler got 10 groundball outs, compared to three flyball outs.

Offensively, there wasn't much happening for the Astros, except for those two swings. Carlos Lee's homer was with two outs, and his 94 RBI put him within tapping distance of 100 RBI for the season. This is how we know Ross Ohlendorf got a raw deal: Pirates batters saw 139 pitches in eight innings. Astros batters saw just 97, in nine. Whoops. The Astros also had a grand total of zero at bats with RISP.

Keppinger was back in the lineup after missing five (six?) games with a bad back. Tommy Manzella still hasn't seen any starting action, as the young'uns sat on the bench and talked about Round Rock, and road trips to Nashville, Oklahoma City, and Portland.

Pitch Count Punk: Chris Coste - 4 pitches in 3 PAs (0x3)

Pitch Count Hero: Lance Berkman - 16 pitches in 3 PAs (1x2, BB)

Man of the Match: Brian Moehler. He's given up six earned runs in his last 17 innings, and hasn't allowed more than 3ER in a start since August 10 (six starts)

Goat of the Game: How about Chris Coste? Those are some short at-bats, with nothing to show for it...

Recap for G46 - Astros @ Pirates

That was...unexpected. Who would have thought the first complete game of the season would come from Brian Moehler? Not I.

Moehler and Edwin Maysonet (Kaz who?) combined to beat the Pirates by themselves, 6-1.

On to the thing:

Moehler: 9IP, 7H/1ER, 4K:2BB

So I'll tell you who was able to get up for some competition with Backe's impending return. How did he do it?

PitcherPit/StrStrike%BF/OutsEfficiency%GB/FB/K
Moehler123/8569.1%35/2777.1%11/12/4

Some breakdowns, if you will:
Of Moehler's 27 outs:
4 strikeouts
11 groundball outs
12 flyball outs
1x4 with RISP
20 first-pitch strikes
8 first-pitch balls
Only got to 2-0 twice
7 first-pitch swinging (1x7)
31 non-contact strikes
6 swinging strikes
25 strike-gazing

And here's the thing - it could have been worse. Pudge struck out swinging - on a baaaad pitch - with the bases loaded to end the first inning. But let's hear it for Edwin Maysonet! 4x4 with his first career home run, first two career doubles, two runs scored, and four RBI. The 6-7-8 triumvirate of Pudge, Keppinger, Maysonet were a combined 8x13 with 5RBI and five runs scored.

One thing that I did not appreciate were the three outs made on the basepaths. Bourn getting thrown out in a rundown at 2nd in the 2nd inning; Tejada pulling a Mays-Hayes in the top of the 3rd to get nailed at 2nd base on Berkman's flyout; and Hunter Pence getting thrown out at home in the 6th on Keppinger's single to left. Of course, the very next batter, Maysonet doubles, scoring Pudge and Keppinger (and what would have been Pence).

But enough negative stuff. Moehler had his first complete game since August 19, 2000 vs Baltimore (the one before that? July 13, 2000 vs Houston - go fig). Maysonet had the most significant start by an Astros rookie since Towles had 85 RBI in one game vs the Cardinals. Berkman and Bourn were both 2x5. Tejada extended his hit streak to 12 games. For one game, life is good.

Man of the Match:
As well - and unexpectedly so - as Moehler did, it has to go to Maysonet.

Goat of the Game:
Tell you what. Everyone, save Moehler, got a hit. No Goat today.

Matchup for G46 - Astros @ Pirates

The Astros come in to this game reeling a little bit (to put it nicely). They're 9-20 vs NL Central teams, 2-8 in their last ten games, and have lost seven straight games. Who's here to stop it? How about Brian Moehler? The Astros were at Pittsburgh from April 13-16, and went 2-1.

Moehler

Moehler had done pretty well in three starts since returning from the DL, but then it all exploded for him against the Rangers on May 23 - allowing six extra-base hits to 22 batters. The last time Moehler faced the Pirates was the first game of the Pirates series, and the last game before going on the DL, allowing 5ER in 2.1IP.

Ross Ohlendorf

Ohlendorf has had a pretty decent season so far, and is coming off his longest outing of 2009. 5-4 with a 4.20 ERA, Ohlendorf has a decision in all nine of his starts. Ohlendorf pitched against the Astros on April 15, but had the misfortune of running into Hampton's One Great Start of 2009, losing 4-1 in a five inning effort. We'll get to that in a minute.

Recap for G8 - Houston @ Pittsburgh

So one of four things happened:
(a) Mike Hampton did what Ed Wade signed him to do
(b) The Astros offense did what the Astros offense does (or, score four runs)
(c) Cecil Cooper's voodoo doll worked
(d) The law of averages caught up with the Astros

Any of the four, I don't care. Hampton was downright money: 6IP, 4H, 0ER, 8K:1BB (and lowering his ERA to 2.45)
Geary: 1IP, 2H, 0ER, 0K:1BB
LaHawk: 1IP, 1H

It was mentioned that this lineup managed to get some runs early. By the 2nd inning, the Astros had doubled the number of innings in which they led. Can I make another point? The last time Hampton struck out 8+ batters in an outing was July 26, 2003.

The Law Offices of Tejada, Berkman and Lee went 6x11, with Lee coming in with a 2-run double and a sac fly, accounting for three of the Astros four runs. Your extra-base hits came from Keppinger, Berkman, Lee and Tejada. And sac flies from the aforementioned Lee and Hunter Pence. In a departure from the previous seven games, the Astros only left runners in scoring position in four ABs: Blum, Pence, Hampton, and Bourn (who broke his season-long hitting streak at 6G).

Basically, the Astros did what they needed to do: jump on Ohlendorf early. They scored four runs. By the end of the 2nd inning, the Astros had led in the same number of innings they had to this point in the season. Pudge did manage to GIDP.

Hampton allowed a leadoff baserunner in the 5th and 6th innings, but got the leadoff man in the first four (obviously). That's what I'm talking about. I do not appreciate Valverde giving up a leadoff homer in the 9th to Adam LaRoche, but it's what it is. A win is a win.

Man of the Match:
This is tough. But for a different reason. Because Hampton and Lee are equally deserving. But because Carlos Lee went 3x4 with 3 RBI, I'll give it to Lee.

Goat of the Game:
Valverde. Blew a shutout. Which would have been very helpful.

May I make a prediction? Thanks. I think Russ Ortiz will do very well tomorrow, because of what I imagine is an era of good feelings in the clubhouse. And it's an afternoon game. Astros pitchers allowed one run on nine hits, and that's huge. God bless the Houston Astros. And God bless Astros County.

Matchup for G8 - Houston @ Pittsburgh

So what about Hampton? Can he get the Astros off the schneid and back in to the win column for the first time in a week? Unless he goes 4x4 with 2HR, it'll be tough.

Hampton's last start:
5IP, 4H, 3ER, 4BB, 5K; 92 pitches/53 for strikes (57.6%)

Hampton pitched okay against the Cardinals last week in a 5-3 loss. He threw 92 pitches in 5 innings, which is far too many, so we'll see if he's able to make that adjustment. Next start for Hampton we'll take a look at his trends, it's just hard to get a read on a guy who hasn't pitched in a while, and one start isn't enough to do that.

Kind of the same thing with Ross Ohlendorf, who is 26, spent time between the rotation and the bullpen, but did pitch in four games, with two starts, against the Astros. I really hope Keppinger gets a start, because in 138 ABs in 2008, lefties were posting a .370/.443/.623 line against him.

Ross Ohlendorf

Last start (Thursday at St Louis):
