A note on the guys Ed Wade let walk

Last December, the Astros declined arbitration offers to Ty Wigginton, Randy Wolf, and Mark Loretta. How have they done this season?

Loretta signs with Dodgers, no compensation pick for the Astros

Well, that backfired. The Dodgers signed Mark Loretta to a 1-year, $1.4 million (!) deal late last night (or early this morning). Loretta made $2.75 million last year. As a result of the Astros not offering Loretta arbitration, the Dodgers will not have to give up a compensation draft pick.

Within that same report, the Dodgers are also close to re-signing Casey Blake. When that happens, the market for Ty Wigginton will ramp up.

Four teams interested in Loretta

"At least four clubs have expressed interested in free agent infielder Mark Loretta, reports ESPN.com's Jerry Crasnick. The list includes Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Arizona and the Dodgers. Loretta, 37, hit .280 in 101 games with Houston last season, and played all four infield positions. After losing his salary arbitration case in February, he received a base salary of $2.75 million. The Astros are not expected to offer Loretta salary arbitration this year."

Mark Loretta news

According to MLB.com, the Diamondbacks are looking at free agent infielder Mark Loretta.

"I think it's very possible something could work out, but there has been no offer," Loretta's agent Bob Garber said last week. "They've let us know they are very interested."

How does this affect the Astros? The only infielders they would have under contract would be Berkman, Matsui, Tejada and Blum. Newhan is in the mix, too. But I'm guessing if Loretta bolts, the Astros will have to look at resigning Wigginton - or going to a Plan C.
