The Astros sent Chuckie Fick a $0 check

Not a clue why this exists, or why it's being posted today, given that the check is dated April 30, 2013. But ex-Astros reliever Chuckie Fick got mail with the old Astros logo:

Clearly further fuel for Bud Norris' rage about Jeff Luhnow's "penny pinching" ways.

More 40 Man Roster Casualities

A new flurry of transactions brought the 40 man roster down to 31. Brian Bogusevic, J.B.Shuck, Chuckie Fick and Jorge de Leon were all outrighted. Bogie, Shuck and de Leon cleared waivers and are now free agents. Fick was sent to Triple A.

Bogusevic is by far the biggest name in that group. Drafted as a pitcher in 2005, he was converted to the outfield in 2008, and made the majors only 2 years later. He showed some power, and put up a 122 OPS+ in 2011. Ultimately, his strikeouts and low OBP did him in. He will always be a fan favorite, due to his unique story, and his memorable walk-off grand slam against the Cubs in 2011. At the end of the day, he was not going to be a part of the Astros future. Hopefully, he can catch on somewhere else.

While you were drinking: Labor Day

So as we try to find the will to blog again and recapture our souls, here are some links from yesterday:

*Here is the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's post on Delino DeShields' record-setting season.

*We'll have our own post like this in the next couple of days, but here are Zachary Levine's minor-league awards.

*In this Astros.com piece, we learn that Dallas Keuchel, J.D. Martinez, Chuckie Fick, and Carlos Corporan have been called up. Jed Lowrie may begin a rehab assignment with Corpus this week.

*Brandon Laird, claimed off waivers from the Yankees, will start at 2B today against Pittsburgh. Laird, who will be 25 next week, is a .272/.322/.455 hitter in 682 career minor-league games.

*Climbing Tal's Hill has a good piece up ripping Fox Sports Houston.

Astros claim Chuckie Fick from Cards

Jeff Luhnow just re-acquired another of his former Cardinals prospects. Zachary Levine tweets that the Astros have claimed RHP Chuckie Fick off waivers from St. Louis.

Fick is 6'5", 185, and 26 years old. He's 1-1 with a 4.68 ERA and 4.3 K/9 in 42.1 innings of relief for AAA Memphis this season; he had a 5.40 ERA in 1.2 IP split between two games with the Cardinals this year. But he posted considerably better numbers a year ago - 2.30 ERA, 7.8 K/9, 1.152 WHIP over 70.1 relief innings for Memphis in 2011.

Over here is an interview that Chuckie did with Future Redbirds back in 2008. And here is a pre-2012 profile by The Cardinal Nation that highlights Fick's extreme GB/FB ratio (greater than 3-to-1).

As Levine notes, this claim puts Houston's 40-man roster at 40, so the Astros will have to remove someone from the roster before Saturday's game to make room for Armando Galarraga.

UPDATE: Fick has joined the Astros in Houston, so Enerio Del Rosario has been sent to OKC to make room on the 25-man roster. But someone still has to come off the 40-man before tomorrow's game if Galarraga is coming up.
