Playoff Preview - G1: Hooks vs. Roughriders

Oh hellz yes. The Hooks return to the playoffs tonight at Frisco beginning at 7pm tonight. Frisco is the Rangers' Double-A affiliate so, you know, Strike 1. Also, they're the RoughRiders. A "RoughRider" is what you get for 75 cents in an Exxon bathroom.

Season Series: Hooks lead 15-13, (7-9 at Frisco)

Hooks starter: Paul Clemens

Clemens - who came to the organization in July 2011 as part of the Bourn trade - began 2012 at OKC, but had a rough go of it. In 20 starts Clemens was 8-8, but with a 6.73 ERA/1.74 WHIP, and 68K:32BB in 101.2IP. So he got sent back to Corpus, where he fared much better against lower-level competition, going 3-2 with a 3.46 ERA/1.25 WHIP, and 37K:11BB in 41.2IP.

His last start of the season actually came against Frisco, where on August 31 he threw 5IP, allowing 6H/2ER, 4K:0BB. In his last five starts for Corpus (he was presumably pouting in his first two Corpus starts), Clemens racked up 30IP, 27H/6ER, 20K:8BB.

Roughriders starter: Barret Loux

Perhaps you remember Barret Loux. First of all, he's from Stratford. But he was the 6th overall pick by the Diamondbacks in 2010, and agreed to a $2m signing bonus. But Arizona was quite surprised to find out that Loux failed his physical thanks to a torn labrum and elbow damage. So they didn't offer him a contract, instead taking the 7th overall pick in the 2011 draft. MLB made the somewhat-unprecedented move of declaring him a free agent. Ed Wade doofused around and figured the Astros didn't need any minor-league pitching, so they didn't pursue him. And then the Rangers signed him for $312,000. Now pre-draft physicals are required for the Top 200 prospects. No one calls it the Loux Rule, but that may as well be what it is.

Loux has been a stud for Frisco this season. He's 14-1 in 25 starts, with a 3.47 ERA/1.27 WHIP, 100K:41BB, and 10HR allowed in 127IP. In six starts against Corpus this season, He has thrown 26.1IP, allowing 28H/18ER, 27K:10BB. This includes his worst start of the season, on June 22 at home vs. Corpus, when the Hooks clapped him up for 8H/8ER, 4K:1BB in 3IP.

Astros out on Loux, kill Deputy Street's dreams

Ed Wade was all shuffling his feet and vague about it, but the Astros say they're out on free agent Barret Loux.

Wade:
"We've had further internal conversations and we're probably not going to pursue it. We talked long and hard about it and we wanted to make sure we did our advance work and tried to get an arm around the entire situation. At this point in time, it's something we're not going to pursue."

Astros again sit and watch Barret Loux throw a baseball

For the second time in a week, the Astros were in attendance for Barret Loux's second throwing session in College Station, along with the Marlins, Rangers, Cubs, Twins, Giants, Brewers, Phillies and Mariners (according to Brian McTaggart).

Loux:
"Things went about the same, similar velocity on the fastball and breaking pitches. [I] found myself breaking my hands later than I should so control wasn't quite as good as normal, but overall a decent bullpen [session]."

Loux's agent Tom Little:
"I think it's important for them to come out, with what's gone on here the last few months, and see him healthy. Just primarly see how he looks and how hard he's working...

"...I think the offers from the clubs that have interest in Barret will start coming in in October and try to get the thing wrapped up and get Barret placed with a club. I think the four or five clubs that have a lot of interest are going to jump out and then hopefully the right fit for Barret."

Loux, on the Astros' interest:
"That's pretty cool. That's where I've grown up. It's the team I grew up around. so it's definitely interesting."

Half of Major League Baseball went to watch Barret Loux.

And the Astros were one of them.

According to Mark Berman, the other teams in attendance in College Station were the Dodgers, Twins, Marlins, Reds, Yankees, Pirates, A's, Brewers, Mets, Angels, Blue Jays, Royals, and Cardinals.

The Diamondbacks weren't.

Bobby Heck:
"We were there because our interest is genuine. We had Rusty Pendergrass, our South Texas area scout up at Texas A&M (Friday) to watch Barret Loux throw an extended bullpen. He showed all four pitches, very consistent with what we saw this past spring in the multiple outings...

..."We will continue to do our due diligence and compile our reports. Obviously we are going to have to weigh the physical work against some of the medical stuff, but at the end of the day if you have a chance to add that type of talent, I think we need to play it out to the end. "

What's the timeline for Loux?
"They would like to have something in place by the end of the semester so he knows his landing spot for spring training."

Chris Wallace is tougher than I am.

Zach Levine has an excellent article on Tri-City catcher (and Houston native) Chris Wallace.

Tri-City manager Jim Pankovits:
"He's been a huge addition helping our pitchers down the stretch, which is the single most important reason why we're where we're at. He's way ahead of the curve as far as his game-calling and his rapport with the pitching staff."

Recounting his incident with Barret Loux, in which Loux broke Wallace's sinus cavity, cheekbone, and eye socket, Wallace missed a month. One month.
"For the four weeks I had to sit at home doing nothing, I was sitting there wondering if I was going to play again. But in the back of my mind, I just knew I had to stay mentally tough about it and not let it get to me and affect me. ...Some days it was really tough to be positive, but I just tried to be really positive about it."

To put this in perspective. I broke my big toe kicking a chair in glee after the United States beat Algeria in June, and haven't got on the treadmill since. Chris Wallace is tougher than I am.

Astros looking into Barret Loux

So the Astros, like 29 other teams, are looking into the oddly-free agent Barret Loux. That sound you hear? It's all the way from the West Coast, and is the sound of Deputy Street shrieking.

Levine:
The Astros have dug into the medical history of former Stratford High School and Texas A&M pitcher Barret Loux but have not gone any farther in pursuit of the unique free agent, general manager Ed Wade said.

Like Barret Loux? So does everyone else

Yahoo's Kendall Rogers says it may take a few days for drafted/unsigned free agent Barret Loux to sign, as "several" teams are interested in him.

Ed Wade might look into Barret Loux

Zach Levine is reporting that Ed Wade just might look into the new, bizarrely-minted free agent Loux out of A&M after Arizona pulled out of the contract due to concerns about his shoulder.

Wade:
"We'll look into it. We'll do our due diligence and decide if he's someone who's in our best interest."
