24-706: Vince Wheeland

With the first pick of the 24th Round of the 2014 MLB Draft (706th overall) the Astros select RHP Vince Wheeland out of Oklahoma State.

Wheeland is a 5'11" 190lb senior, in 2013 named to the All-Big 12 First Team as a reliever. This season, he was 10-0 with a 1.53 ERA in 30 games (2 starts), including 42:15 K:BB in 76.1 IP - good enough to earn him Big 12 Pitcher of the Year

He has served as OSU's "utility pitcher," filling any role he was called upon to do. Teammate Saulyer Saxon:
"Vinnie's just a stopper. He's going to go out there and compete every day. Some days he doesn't have his best stuff, but he'll throw it up there 82 and get people out. We're like, ‘How does he do it?' He just competes. He just finds a way. And it's awesome. As soon as he steps on the mound, everybody's energy goes up. Everybody gets excited and knows that he's going to go up there and give you his best. And we have confidence that it's going to be enough.”
