Astros sign Hector Corpas

Via Baseball America's transaction page, we see that the Astros have signed RHP Hector Corpas.

As Matt Eddy notes:
Released by the Cardinals in December, Hector Corpas rejoins Jeff Luhnow and other former members of the St. Louis front office in the Astros' remade front office. Corpas signed out of Venezuela in ’07 and advanced to low Class A in the Cardinals system.

Corpas is 6'3", 170lbs, and spent 2011 with St. Louis' single-A team, where he had a rough go of it: 39.2IP, 48H/32ER, 31K:17BB, for a 7.26 ERA/1.64 WHIP.

Now I'm getting pissed. He's got to know that there are more than two teams in MLB. This guy looks horrible from a stats point of view and that's what Luhnow does right? Stats? Sorry...Ed left me with a short fuse for dealing almost exclusively with his former club. If we trade Bud to St. Louis, I'm punching someone in the face!

A signing this mundane has you pissed? I'd hate to see you when something really bad happens.

I'm not Anon 1. To me, this signing is meaningless, but pulling a lot of folks from the Cards (the decision scientist, bench coach and the new scouting guys) gives me pause. Obviously, I hope they are great hires, and it is because Luhnow has an eye for organizational talent, but it could also be that he has limited horizons.

My comments to anon 3 - 1.) it's hard to find good people, 2.) one never really knows if person they hire is going to be good fit or not until you work together for a while, 3.) Cards have a winning program; Luhnow built a winner...Similarly, looking back, I think Ed Wade got great value form Phills - Myers was great value 1st year all Phil prospects are now our top prospects. So, strategy of not picking human resources from organization you know, is a dumb one if based on fear of limited horizons. If organization is a winning organization, you want to pick resources from there as they exhibit winning behavior.

Whoa there sparky! Go look at his 2009 and 2010 numbers before you get your panties in a wad. Sincerely, Anonymous #4

I think new GMs bringing FO talent with them is very common in MLB. The Red Sox/Cubs deal for Epstein partly hinged on him agreeing not to poach too many employees from the Sox.

Corpas was hampered by a biceps problem last season which resulted in several trips to the DL. Was also arrested last September.
