Justice: All Hail Ed Wade

Richard Justice has some words for Ed Wade that just might bring a tear to your eye:

Did you see that catch by Michael Bourn in the ninth inning? Have you checked out his batting average? He has turned out to be everything Ed Wade hoped he'd be, and a little more...Wade got it right on Jeff Keppinger, too. And Matt Lindstrom. And Brett Myers. The Brandon Lyon signing might turn out all right, too. He was right about Randy Wolf and Latroy Hawkins as well...Some of his under-the-radar moves have worked out well, too. Tim Byrdak is one, Jeff Fulchino another...

...These Astros aren't yet Wade's Astros. He acquired just 12 of the 25 players on tonight's roster and inherited the front of the rotation and Carlos Lee. Slowly, though, they're reflecting his beliefs in pitching and defense.

This is true. The huge contracts with the no-trade clauses were Tim Purpura's decisions, and the Astros continue to pay that price (and in Lee's case, will continue to do so until the end of 2012). Of the decisions that have impacted Wade's Astros, Justice points out Bobby Heck, Brad Mills, Brad Arnsberg - the new Killer B's. It's happening, we just have to wait. Maybe not that long...

I agree. We gave up an obvious declining BRAD LEDGE for a Major League ready CF hometown kid who is going to win another Gold Glove with plays like that. We sold on Lidge high and that was genius. I just wouldn't expect Michael Bourn to consistently play this well all year. Constanzo was a crucial piece in the Tejada deal as well.

However, this is a little premature much like anything Richard Justice writes. We barely beat the Pirates last year. Ed Wade has done a terrific job cleaning up Poop's mess, but he hasn't brought us to the next level. I'm not hailing to the guy until we make the playoffs. Our farm is respectable now. Well in our eyes atleast.

Made it to Opening Day for the first time in my "illustrious" career this year. Eating a hot dog at 4:30ish for a 6:05 start at a random standing table near my seat (I was alone b/c a client stood me up to attend something lame. Oh well.). 2 guys walk up and ask if they can share my table. Sure. Right after I say yes, I recognize that one of them is Eric Young. Apparently, he is a 'roving scout' now for the Astros or something to that effect. We start chatting 'Stros baseball. He was asking my opinion of this year's team and I was conveying a bit of cynicism. That dude was pro 2010 'Stros and defending their playoff abilities left and right. He said the initial 3-4 series were gonna be really tough. But after that, he thought they had a chance this year. He LOVED the off-season moves (esp. Myers and Feliz) and was obviously a big Ed Wade fan. Now, whether he was just a good employee saying the right things about his employer or not, it looks to me like the first part of what he was saying was true. And of course, I hope he was right.

Incidentally, TC, after our convo, I did ask if I could tweet a pic of him with AC in mind. He was nice about it but quick with a no.

All hail Ed Wade.
