Tuesday Morning Hot Links

Working on a post for tomorrow of reflections of the 2019 season a week after it ended. Until then:

*Jake Kaplan: This winter might be Jeff Luhnow's biggest challenge yet.

*Brian McTaggart has a notebook in which:
-Jim Crane is ready to "make a run" at Gerrit Cole, who received a qualifying offer. This means that, if he signs with another team, the Astros will get a compensatory pick (possibly off-setting the loss of a pick if the Astros sign a player who received a qualifying offer). Luhnow:
We're probably over the line [the so-called Luxury Tax] at this point without any added additions. Fortunately, Jim's been really open to different investment ideas depending on how we justify it and how it helps our team. At the end of the day, we're not going to know our payroll until we start next year. There's going to be opportunities to improve the team.

In this video, Crane said "it's a possibility" to go over the luxury tax.

-Hitting coach Alex Cintron will manage Gigantes de Carolina in the Puerto Rican Winter League.

*Finalists for major AL awards: Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole, Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez.

*Finalists for AL Manager of the Year: Rocco Baldelli, Aaron Boone, Kevin Cash.

*Lance McCullers was reinstated from the 60-Day DL. Kent Emanuel was added to the 40-Man roster.

*The Astros declined Chris Devenski's $2.825m option for 2020. He's still arbitration-eligible.

*What The Heck Bobby has a good look at whomst the Astros could lose in the upcoming Rule 5 Draft.

*Tom Verducci: Seven moments that flipped the World Series. You don't have to read this.

*Ken Rosenthal spent the last part of his offseason column lobbying for harsh punishment to come the Astros' way for Brandon Taubman.

Friday Morning Hot Links

Good morning! The Astros had their last off-day until [squints] Monday. They open a series against the Cardinals tonight.

*Don't forget to pick up your tickets to tomorrow's Lima Time Time Live Show at The Secret Group! Tickets are $5 and yes, we get a cut. Now is your chance to get all of your friends together and help us make a little scratch.

*Next up: You need this redesigned Air Yordan shirt. And this Michael Brantley: Professional Hitter shirt.

*Alright, on to Bidness.

*Anyone who is a Tony Kemp fan (which is limited to Any Human on Earth) has the Sad as it was announced he will be DFA'd in advance of Carlos Correa's activation from the DL.

We all know the situation:
-Tony Kemp seems like a legitimately great human being.
-Tony Kemp was out of options, so he would have to pass through waivers (he won't) in order to get sent back to Round Rock.
-Myles Straw is a little more versatile, and is definitely faster, providing more late-game options for Hinch. Ultimately the Astros went with Straw.
-Tony Kemp can now be included in any trade package put together between now and the 31st.

Kemp, 2019: .227/.308/.417, 29K:16BB
Straw, 2019: .256/.376/.321, 20K:15BB

You could make a case that the Astros did this to themselves by bringing Kemp up in 2017 for a total of 17 games - two in April, and then again as a September call-up. He made ten starts in those 17 games, burning an option year. Why was Kemp brought up in April 2017? Because Teoscar Hernandez was injured in a collision with Altuve in his first MLB game of the 2017 season (April 25). Teoscar Hernandez was playing because Jake Marisnick was on the 7-Day Concussion List, and came back five days later. That's stupid. Kemp was optioned back to Fresno after two games. It sucks for Tony Kemp, it sucks for us. Kemp will find a landing spot with a team and get an opportunity. And he still has a Ring. Best of luck to Tony Kemp in the future. Him and Evan Gattis hugging is one of the greatest things in franchise history. Better than Jeff Kent's helmet flip.

It also frees up one spot on the 40-Man Roster. Tyler White's DFA combined with Kemp's DFA makes it 38, but adding Correa from the 60-Day IL will bring it to 39. The Trade Deadline is five days away.

Let's look back at the 2013 Draft, and do a Where Are They Now?
1-1: Mark Appel. Retired.
2-40: Andrew Thurman: Traded to Atlanta in the Evan Gattis/James Hoyt deal, January 2015.
3-74: Kent Emanuel. 4.26 ERA in Round Rock in 2019.
4-107: Conrad Gregor. Last played in the Astros Org in 2016. Currently with New Jersey, of the independent Canadian-American Association.
5-137: Tony Kemp. DFA'd, July 2019.
6-167: Jacob Nottingham. Traded to Oakland in the Scott Kazmir deal, July 2015. Currently with the Brewers' organization.
7-197: James Ramsey. Last played in 2016.
8-227: Jason Martin: Traded to Pittsburgh in the Gerrit Cole deal, January 2018.
9-257: Brian Holberton: Last played in 2015.
10-287: Austin Nicely: Last played in the Astros Org in 2015. Currently pitching for Evansville in the independent Frontier League.

Only Kent Emanuel is still with the Astros (from the 1st 10 Rounds). Kemp, Nottingham, and Martin made it to the Majors from the Astros' 2013 Draft. Oh there was one more guy: 33rd Round pick Tyler White and...

*The Astros traded Tyler White to the Dodgers for 24-year old reliever Andre Scrubb. Scrubb throws in the mid-90s with a "funky delivery." A former 8th Round pick by the Dodgers, Scrubb has a 2.37 ERA / 1.21 WHIP in 57IP (66K:28BB) for Double-A Tulsa. He'll report to Corpus.

Tyler White is a sweetheart and had very nice things to say about the Astros on Instagram.

*The Mets "want to move" Noah Syndergaard and a "Rival Exec" said that the price for Noah Syndergaard is "a Top 30 prospect and a couple of other solid pieces."

*An AL scout says the Astros need a starting pitcher, but the farm system isn't as deep as you might think. In order to take care of the first thing, the Astros might have to deal Tucker or Whitley.

*Still other Unnamed Execs think the Deadline will be quiet through the weekend and then pop off on Monday.

*Marcus Stroman news:
-Joel Sherman says he's likely the biggest-named pitcher to get traded.
-Andy Martino says the Blue Jays might actually extend him.
-Jon Morosi says he has sources that say both Kyle Tucker for Stroman wouldn't be enough and that the Astros wouldn't trade Tucker for Stroman straight up."

*Madison Bumgarner news:
-Mark Feinsand says the Giants will hang on to him.
-Hank Schulman says the Giants haven't made a decision either way.

No one knows anything about anything. And anyone claiming otherwise is either lying, or is an idiot.

*Troy Tulowitzki retired, ending a 13-year career hampered by injuries. Tulo spent 10 seasons in Colorado, hitting .299/.371/.513. Then he got traded to Toronto and from mid-2015 through 2019 played in a total of 243 games, hitting .249/.313/.416. He was really good, and a really good Colorado hitter. Now he'll be an assistant coach for the University of Texas.

*Protests in Puerto Rico got their governor to resign.

*How Stan Smith went from a decent tennis player to the most popular trainer on the planet.

*A Musical Selection and damn if it's not a referendum on society right now:

Saturday Morning Hot Links

Mike Fiers got smoked and the Astros lose on the road. Again. The Masked Marvel has your recap.

*Fiers:
They came out swinging. Even the first couple innings, they were swinging right off the bat. I need to make better pitchers early on in the count.

*Michael Feliz has a 41.25% K-rate.

*It looks as though A.J. Reed re-aggravated his hamstring injury.

*Kent Emanuel - the Astros 2013 3rd Round pick - threw 5IP, 4H/1ER, 2K:1BB in his season debut for Corpus last night. Notable? He only had Tommy John surgery 11 months ago. Carlos Gomez went 1x4 with a strikeout (he's 2x11 on his rehab stint).

*Mark Appel is on the DL with a strained right shoulder after the Phillies noticed a drop in velocity.

*From Vice: New technologies are forcing baseball to balance Big Data with Big Brother

Thursday Morning Hot Links

With the win last night, coupled with losses by the Mariners, Angels, and Rangers, FanGraphs gives the Astros a 48.1% chance of winning the AL West and a 70.9% chance of making the post-season. Both are season highs, and taking these three games against the Orioles have increased the division odds by 10.6% and the postseason odds by 9.3%.

*The Masked Marvel has the recap of last night's game.

*Lance McCullers joins Kerry Wood (1998), Dwight Gooden (1986), and Ismael Valdez (1995) as the only pitchers to throw a complete game with 10K+ and 0BB at Age 21 or younger. You might remember that Kerry Wood game.

*Hinch, on McCullers:
He sees opportunity and wants to grab it. Every time he's gone out, there's an approach that is impressive for a brand-new guy at this level and a 21-year old that looks like he's in total control of the game.

Hinch talked about leaving McCullers in to face Chris Davis in the 9th:
I went out wanting to leave him in and asked him how much he had left in his tank, and he said he had plenty. I told him 'Good,' because this was his hitter to get, this was his game to get. He had earned it. It was going to be a good step for him, because I wanted him to shake hands after that at-bat. He looked me dead in the eye and said, 'I'm good to go.'

*Chris Carter is over the Mendoza Line and is hitting .389 in his 11-game hitting streak. Carter has 11 multi-homer games, 5th-most in Astros history.

*Dwight Howard: The best.

*Pat Neshek has the 2nd-longest stretch (20.2IP) in MLB history to open a season without allowing a walk. And he has a stress fracture in his foot.

*ESPN asks if Sonny Gray is a better pitcher than Chris Archer and Dallas Keuchel.

*Carlos Correa reached for a chopper with his bare hand, but decided to let it go:
I do have to think about those things. I'm down here to play hard, but I also have to play smart.

*2013 3rd Round pick Kent Emanuel had Tommy John surgery:
*2013 8th Round pick Jason Martin, on adjusting to professional baseball.

*FanGraphs unveiled a sortable 2015 draft board.

*Jordan Lyles underwent season-ending surgery to fix a ligament in his big toe.

*The Mariners panicked and made a trade for Mark Trumbo.

Kent Emanuel update

A quick update on 3rd Round pick Kent Emanuel, who signed yesterday for an at-slot $747,700:

Emanuel will start the season in Kissimmee with the GCL, and then will head to Tri-City, where he expects to throw about 20 innings this season.

Why 20 innings? Even the New York Times got in on the criticism of North Carolina head coach Mike Fox about Emanuel's workload, but Emanuel said he's fine:
My arm feels great. Believe it or not, I just got done getting an MRI, and the doctor said my shoulder and elbow look as good as any he's seen in this Draft class. I'm good to go.

With Emanuel's at-slot signing, the Astros have signed all of their top 10 picks - and still have $1,077,300 remaining to target 11th Round pick Devonte German.

Astros sign Kent Emanuel

The Astros this afternoon have reached an agreement with 3rd Round pick Kent Emanuel, out of North Carolina. Terms have obviously not yet been disclosed, but we'll update when they are.

Emanuel was the last remaining player in the first ten rounds to sign. 11th Round pick Devonte German still has yet to decide if he will sign.

So 3rd Round pick Kent Emanuel thinks pitch counts are overrated, too

A day after University of North Carolina head coach Mike Fox said pitch counts were overrated for college players (with the issue coming up after Fox had Astros' 3rd Round pick Kent Emanauel throw 175 pitches in three days), Emanuel - despite getting knocked out of UNC's Super-Regional after throwing 2.1IP, 7H/4ER, 1K:1BB - agreed.

Emanuel:
You spend a lot of time preparing to be able to throw and do stuff like this, so it's a non-factor.

Fox said that Emanuel just couldn't locate his off-speed stuff, so he was relying on his 87-89mph fastball, which got hammered.

2nd Day Draft Pick Reactions

Mark Appel, on the negotiations with the Astros:
Mr. Boras is my agent and he will handle negotiations. Obviously, I will be very involved. But I trust him, and he's done a great job so far.

On 3rd Round pick Kent Emanuel, Mike Elias said:
We liked that he's a crafty thrower. He's a pitchability left-hander that spots up his pitches. When you have a competitor like that, it checks off a lot of boxes.

Emanuel:
I don't know too much about the specifics of the franchise, but I'm sure I will soon. I'm going to do my research, that's for sure. I know they're an up-and-coming bunch that wants to win again badly.

4th Round pick Conrad Gregor on signing:
Right now, I'm undecided, but the next few weeks are about my teammates, getting to the College World Series. I'll make the decision with my family, because it's a big one.

Elias, on 5th Round pick Tony Kemp:
We loved Tony Kemp. The word 'sparkplug' is used quite a bit. He has a ferocious approach at the plate and treats at-bats like they're wars.

Elias, on 6th Round pick Jacob Nottingham:
We think he's a steal. We evaluated Jacob as a top-five-round talent, at minimum.

Elias, on 7th Round pick James Ramsay:
He turned into one of the most captivating leadoff guys in college baseball and was arguably the best center fielder in the country.

Elias, on 8th Round pick Jason Martin:
He's got what we call a very strong profile. He's left-handed, can run, hits for average and can defend. That's a leadoff hitter's tool set.

Elias, on 9th Round pick Brian Holberton, Elias said:
He's one of the guys who made (UNC's) lineup click. He has the power and the bat to slot anywhere in your order....What pushed him into our Top 10 rounds was that we saw him catch in the ACC Tournament, so we're going to try him out there. If that works out, we might really have something. He's just a solid ballplayer.

Elias, on 10th Round pick Austin Nicely, and his back injury last summer:
We're not really concerned about the injury. He's an athletic kid, and we saw him healthy at our player tryouts a few weeks ago. He impressed.

3-74: Kent Emanuel

With the 1st pick of the 3rd Round (74th overall), the Astros select 6'4" 215lb Kent Emanuel, a Junior LHP from North Carolina.

Emanuel was ACC Pitcher of the Year this season, throwing 120IP, allowing 103H/36ER, 27BB:88K, going 11-3 with a 2.70 ERA. He's been on the Minute Maid Park mound before, back in March for the Astros Foundation College Classic, going 7IP/1ER against Rice on 3/1.

He was a pre-season All-American this season and UNC's Friday night starter, having previously been drafted out of high school in the 19th round by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2010. He was ranked #69 in Jonathan Mayo's Top 100, and Mayo had this to say:

"As the Friday starter for one of the top-ranked college programs in the country, Emanuel is undoubtedly getting plenty of looks. He gets the job done, albeit without wow kind of stuff.
His fastball will top out at around 91 mph, his breaking stuff is fringy and he has a solid changeup. But what he lacks in pure stuff he makes up for with pitchability. He has excellent command and knows how to mix his pitches extremely well.
A lack of a true out pitch might mean he doesn't come off Draft boards real early, but he's big and strong and understands his craft, giving him the chance to be a workhorse at the back end of a big league rotation in the future."

You can view his UNC bio page here, and John Sickels' profile of him (with video) here.
