Thursday Morning Hot Links

 Actual news, you say?

*MLB.com's Mark Feinsand is reporting that the Astros and Former Astros Great Jason Castro are "in serious talks" and a deal could be completed soon.

It's kind of hard to believe but Castro, the Astros' 1st Round pick (10th overall) in 2008 will be in his Age 34 season in 2021. He's a career .230/.312/.390 hitter and, in 452 games from 2015-2020 has hit .218/.309/.380 for the Astros/Twins/Angels/Padres. Defensively, I guess it's fine, but this obviously means the Astros don't think all that much of Garrett Stubbs while it also doesn't address the Astros' most-glaring needs in the outfield and on the pitching staff. It's just...weird.

*The Astros agreed to a minor-league deal with an invite to Spring Training with 25-year old outfielder Jose Siri. In 594 minor-league games, Siri has hit .264/.313/.447 with 675K:147BB, reaching Triple-A for 30 games in 2019. As Astros.com notes, Siri was a Top-10 prospect for the Reds in 2018 and 2019 but was claimed off waivers twice in 2020, ending the year in the Giants' organization. He's hitting .281 in the Dominican Winter League right now.

*SI lists Jose Altuve as one of the MLB stars looking for a bounce-back season in 2021.

Wednesday Morning Hot Links

Short one today - I'm exhausted.

*The Astros lost 7-4 to the Marlins. Chas McCormick (21st Round - 2017) hit a grand slam. Taylor Jones, Jeremy Pena, and Drew Ferguson had the other hits. Chris Devenski and Jared Hughes saw their first action of the Spring and combined for 2IP, 3H/0ER, 1K:0BB.

*Chris Devenski dropped 20 pounds this offseason and is looking to return to his All-Star form. Devenski:
I worked this offseason on getting my fastball right, getting my command right and spinning the ball out of my hand the right way. I went back and did a bunch of drills on that. I think everything for me is mental. I know the way my body feels and when I'm in the shape I'm in right now.

*In this McTaggart piece, we find:
-Dusty Baker really likes the young pitchers.
-Dustin Garneau is settling into the analytics side of being an Astros catcher.

*Myles Straw is among the fastest players in MLB. Straw:
(Astros Strength & Conditioning Coach Brendan) Verner would wear me out about it last year and kind of pushed me and motivated me. I'll probably work with him a lot this year and try to be the quickest in the league.

*Abraham Toro was supposed to start on Tuesday but was scratched with an eye irritation.

*The Astros play a split-squad game against the Mets and the Cardinals. Jose Urquidy and Forrest Whitley will be on various mounds, George Springer and Michael Brantley will play. I'm sure Boos are coming.

Sign-Stealing Stuff

Wednesday Morning Hot Links

*Gonna go out on a limb and say there will be no Hot Links tomorrow or Friday. I hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving and a restful few days. If this is not an easy time for you, I'm sorry. Love, me, Mrs AC, the heiress, Turkey Mike, Turkeyfoot, Turkey Gross, Turkey Tyson, Harry "Beans" Keener, Mitchell Dressing, Frank "Taters" Lary, Manuel "Potato" Cueto, and Pie Traynor.

*The Astros made their first free-agent signing of the season, 32-year old catcher Dustin Garneau to a 1yr/$650K deal with an opportunity for $75K in incentives. He and Garrett Stubbs are the only catchers on the Astros' 40-Man Roster. You can bet the Astros will try to get a more top-line name behind the plate to catch Verlander, Greinke, & Co.

The Astros will be Garneau's fifth team and 2020 will be his 6th year in the Majors. He's a career .207/.290/.343 hitter in 123 MLB games (381 PAs). If Dustin Garneau is the Astros' Opening Day catcher, then something gone awry.

McTaggart runs down the available options at catcher for Houston.

*MLB.com runs down the most attractive trade chip for each AL West team. The Astros? Not exactly looking to deal anyone...

*Aaron Sanchez is the Astros' most-obvious non-tender candidate.

*Lance McCullers stays a good dude.

*Houston Press: If this investigation goes sideways, will the World Series feel tainted?

*The five most thrilling Astros wins of 2019. I am not ready to read this yet.
