4-106: Daniel Mengden

With the first pick in the 4th Round of the 2014 draft (106th overall) the Astros select RHP Daniel Mengden out of Texas A&M University.

Mengden, 6'1" 210lb RHP out of A&M is a Houston Westside graduate. This season for A&M, Mengden threw a team-high 103.2IP, allowed 103H/47ER, 95K:29BB.

Last year Big League Futures wrote up a scouting report that had Mengden at 93-96mph with a projectable slider. Prospect Digest wrote that Mengden was, ironically, the "anti-A.J. Reed" and projected Mengden to go in the 1st/2nd Round range, saying, "He's already shown above average control/command and an impressive ability to miss bats in the tough SEC, which should only improve as he gains more experience. Mengden's not an elite pitching prospect, but he does have a pretty high ceiling, something along the lines of a steady #3."

Mengden was ranked on Wednesday by Baseball America as the 9th-best draft prospect in the state of Texas, and a pre-season Top 50 Junior prospect in February.

Everybody's favorite Jeff Blogwell - on staff at A&M's newspaper - had this to say:
