I really like Appel and believe him to be a future top of the rotation guy for many years. But, the Stros taking a "MLB ready" pitcher now means they will waste valuable years on Appel's arm while the team continues to rebuild and become a serious player in the NL. If it truly is another 5-6 yrs before the Astros are again contenders (optimistic right now), that puts Appel (or Gausman) in the upper 20s range. While there is certainly more risk for Buxton, Giolito and Correa, you would be gaining on the back end and have 22-23 year olds to lead the team for over a decade should they pay off and reach their tremendous upsides.
