Significantly reducing the potential package they'll get for Roy, the Astros want the destination team to take all of Roy's remaining contract.
The Astros are saying that any team that wants to acquire Oswalt will have to take on all of what remains on his contract, according to a baseball source who spoke on the condition of anonymity.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Why not take the opportunity to pay some of his salary and get some great prospects back? With this condition, chances are he doesn't get traded at all, which means you're paying that money anyway, on a team which is going nowhere.
Drayton: Wake up!
Drayton: SELL THE TEAM IF YOU ARENT WILLING TO EAT A PORTION OF THE MONEY YOU SPENT. REALLY SCREWING OUR CHANCE TO MAKE A DEAL WITH THE RANGERS!
It's negotiations...you see what you can get for full salary relief first, and then when you've got them interested and talking about a trade, you try to "buy" the extra players by scaling back your salary relief demands.
You do this because someone might be desperate/stupid enough to give you a good prospect package and salary relief. But you can't get it if you don't ask for it. And you certainly don't start out negotiations by asking for the bare minimum of what you would accept.
And if you take Roy and his salary, I'll throw in Carlos, Pedro, Lance and the choo-choo train for free.
